Barcelona star Lionel Messi was first to apply to trademark his surname as a sportswear brand in 2011. However, the player faced troubles when the cycling company (Massi) argued that the similarity between their logos would cause confusion.

As per the ECJ, the star player's reputation could be taken into account when weighing up whether the public would be able to tell the difference between the two brands. The EU court stood by its ruling in 2018.

The head of the European Commission said on Wednesday the chances of reaching a trade deal with Britain were fading by the day as the British government pushes ahead with moves that would breach their divorce treaty.

The British government announced draft legislation last week which it acknowledges would violate its international legal obligations and undercut parts of the divorce deal it signed before Britain formally left the European Union in January.

Brussels wants Prime Minister Boris Johnson to scrap what is known as the Internal Market Bill, saying it could sink talks on future trade arrangements before Britain finally leaves the EU's orbit when a status quo transition period ends in December.

Johnson has refused.

"With every day that passes, the chances of a timely agreement do start to fade," said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, the EU executive.

In a speech to the European Parliament, she said the divorce agreement "cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied".

"This is a matter of law, trust and good faith ... Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership," she said.

The EU fears a disorderly Brexit if the terms of the trade relationship are not agreed, and former British prime ministers have said breaking the law is a step too far that undermines the country's reputation.

Johnson has said the bill was essential to counter "absurd" threats from Brussels including that London be required to put up trade barriers between Britain and its province of Northern Ireland and that the EU would impose a food blockade. Such steps, he said, would threaten the unity of the United Kingdom.

Asked on Wednesday if the EU was negotiating in good faith, Johnson said: "I don't believe they are."

"Perhaps they will prove my suspicions wrong," Johnson said.

COMPROMISE WITH REBELS

Johnson's Internal Market Bill has been criticised by senior members of his governing Conservative Party and the previous five prime ministers have also expressed concern at the damage it might do to Britain's international standing.

However, he appeared to have averted a rebellion by Conservative lawmakers which might have derailed it altogether after agreeing to a compromise with them on Wednesday.

"It is agreed that the parliamentary procedure suggested by some colleagues provides a clearer, more explicit democratic mandate for the use of these powers, and also provides more legal certainty," the government and two of the rebel lawmakers said in a joint statement.

It will mean parliament will have to give its approval before ministers can use the powers which override the Brexit divorce deal.

Earlier, Britain's Northern Ireland minister Brandon Lewis told parliament he stood by remarks he made last week that the bill would "break international law in a very specific and limited way".

However in a sign of continuing unease with the plans, Scotland's top law adviser to the British government, Richard Keen, quit his role, saying he could not reconcile his legal obligations with the government's policy intentions.

His resignation comes after the head of the British government's legal department quit last week over the issue.

EU diplomatic sources told Reuters that if the bill was passed in its current form, Brussels felt it could not deal with London.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government sees a 'way through' the parliamentary maze for his bill that would break the Brexit divorce treaty as it talks with rebels in the Conservative Party, a minister said on Wednesday.

Johnson's Internal Market Bill, which the EU has demanded he scrap by the end of September, is currently being debated in parliament, though he is facing a rebellion by some members of his Conservative Party.

"I believe there is a way through," Robert Buckland told the BBC when asked about negotiations with rebels in parliament over the bill, adding that London wanted a deal with the EU.

Asked if he had been involved in negotiations with Bob Neill, a Conservative lawmaker, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said: "There are lots of discussions going on with all MPs from all parts of the debate, not just Bob Neill."

"We want to get this bill through, we want to make sure that we are ready for any disagreements or disputes that might arise if we don't get agreement in the joint committee," he said. "For me, I just want Brexit sorted."

Buckland told Times Radio that the bill was needed as an insurance policy in case the EU made a "material breach" of their obligations but that the talks were not yet at that stage and that London would use current mechanisms to find a compromise.

Before starting the second phase of funding for blast-hit Lebanon, the European Union's commissioner for crisis management has called for an urgent formation of a "credible" government.

The EU has, till now, mobilised close to $79 million (64 million euros) as an emergency response to the country after Beirut was rocked by a devastating explosion at the port, killing nearly 200 people and injuring several thousands in the early days of August this year.

However, Janez Lenarcic has now said that the next round of funding will only be provided after Lebanon forms a credible government.

The next round of funding, which is supposed to help the government in restructuring the port and other structures, ave to wait as funding would have to go hand in hand with reforms because the international community was not willing to support practices "that led to financial collapse and economic crisis".

"We need a credible government that enjoys the confidence of the Lebanese people and is determined to take the country in the right direction," Lenarcic said.

"Lebanon's political class has to provide what people demand and this is also what the international community expects. I'm talking about governance, not only economic reforms. There has to be a change in the way this place is governed," he said.

The statement has come after Lebanon rejected an international investigation claiming the country will carry out an investigation on its own — which has brought back the long-lying issue of corruption within the government.

"The EU commission supports reaching an agreement with the IMF because that would unlock substantial resources that Lebanon desperately needs to revive its economy," Lenarcic said.

Lebanon was already suffering through an economic crisis due to coronavirus and the locals were alleging the government of being corrupt, when Beirut ports experienced the biggest explosion the country has seen in years, and destroyed structures and took hundreds of lives.

A month after the explosion, another massive fire broke out at Beirut port engulfing a warehouse that was storing engine oil and vehicle tyres. In response, President Michel Aoun said, "Today's fire could be an intentional act of sabotage, the result of a technical error, ignorance, or negligence. In all cases, the cause needs to be known as soon as possible, and those responsible held to account."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has accused the European Union of threatening to impose a food "blockade" between Britain and Northern Ireland that could tear the UK apart, throwing new fuel on the fire of simmering Brexit talks.

Writing in Saturday's Daily Telegraph newspaper, Johnson said the EU's stance justified his government's introduction of new legislation to rewrite its Brexit withdrawal treaty -- a bill that is causing deep alarm among his own MPs.

Talks between London and Brussels on a future trading relationship are deadlocked. Absent a deal by the end of this year, when the full force of Brexit kicks in, Johnson said the EU was bent on an "extreme interpretation" of rules for Northern Ireland.

"We are being told that the EU will not only impose tariffs on goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, but that they might actually stop the transport of food products from GB to NI," he wrote.

"I have to say that we never seriously believed that the EU would be willing to use a treaty, negotiated in good faith, to blockade one part of the UK, to cut it off, or that they would actually threaten to destroy the economic and territorial integrity of the UK."

The food dispute centres on the EU's refusal so far to grant Britain "third country" status, which acknowledges that nations meet basic requirements to export their foodstuffs to Europe.

Under Britain's EU withdrawal treaty, Northern Ireland will enjoy a special status to ensure no return of a border with EU member Ireland, in line with a 1998 peace pact that ended three decades of bloodshed.

The EU is worried that post-Brexit Britain could undercut its own food standards, as well as rules on state aid for companies, to send goods into its single market via Northern Ireland.

After another difficult round of trade talks this week in London, chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier said "many uncertainties" remained about Britain's food export regime after January 1.

'Legal safety net'

"More clarity is needed for the EU to do the assessment for the third-country listing of the UK," he said in a statement.

Johnson said his government remained committed to finding agreement with the EU by the end of the year.

"But we cannot leave the theoretical power to carve up our country -– to divide it -– in the hands of an international organisation," he wrote, calling the new UK Internal Market Bill a "legal safety net".

The prime minister's article appeared after he held a chaotic videoconference on Friday evening with mutinous Conservative MPs who are aghast at the prospect of the government tearing up an international treaty.

"We must get this bill through," Johnson wrote, ahead of a debate in parliament on Monday. "So I say to my fellow parliamentarians that we cannot go back to the dark days of last year -– the squabbling that so undermined our negotiators."

UK-EU Trade Deal: UK's Brexit negotiator calls on EU for interference

The European Union is set to impose economic sanctions on 31 senior Belarusian officials, according to a Reuters report.

The list will include Belarus’ interior minister, and will be put out by mid-September, three EU diplomats claimed.

Fresh elections

EU wants fresh elections in Belarus after Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory in allegedly disputed elections. He has ruled the country for 26 years.

"We initially agreed on 14 names but many states felt that was not sufficient. We have now reached consensus on another 17," one EU diplomat told Reuters. "These are senior officials responsible for the election, for violence and for the crackdown."

Additionally, EU foreign ministers have given their approval for the sanctions, including travel bands and asset freezes. This was decided last month in Berlin, but with no clear names in sight.

Greece and Cyprus are focused on imposing sanctions on Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is why they are yet to extend their support to sanctions against Belarus.

Consensus needed

The diplomats said that all 27 EU countries must reach a consensus on these sanctions to ensure tough measures against Belarus.

The formal agreement will most likely come on September 21, when the next meeting among foreign ministers takes place. The sanctions, then, would come into effect starting September 22.

The list will include Belarus’ interior minister, and will be put out by mid-September, three EU diplomats claimed. Fresh elections EU wants fresh elections in Belarus after Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory in allegedly disputed elections. He has ruled the country for 26 years. "We initially agreed on 14 names but many states felt that was not sufficient. We have now reached consensus on another 17," one EU diplomat told Reuters. "These are senior officials responsible for the election, for violence and for the crackdown." Also read: Belarus protesters keep pressure on Lukashenko with new march Additionally, EU foreign ministers have given their approval for the sanctions, including travel bands and asset freezes. This was decided last month in Berlin, but with no clear names in sight. Greece and Cyprus are focused on imposing sanctions on Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is why they are yet to extend their support to sanctions against Belarus. Consensus needed The diplomats said that all 27 EU countries must reach a consensus on these sanctions to ensure tough measures against Belarus. The formal agreement will most likely come on September 21, when the next meeting among foreign ministers takes place. The sanctions, then, would come into effect starting September 22. Britain will not blink first in Brexit trade negotiations with the European Union and is not scared of a no-deal exit at the end of the year, the country's top Brexit negotiator warned the bloc on Sunday.

UK says, won't blink first on Brexit trade negotiations

Britain's top Brexit negotiator warned the European Union that the island country will not blink first in trade negotiations with the EU and is not scared of a no-deal exit.

Britain's top Brexit negotiator warned the European Union that the island country will not blink first in trade negotiations with the EU and is not scared of a no-deal exit. Britain left the European Union on January 31. However, talks have so far made little headway on agreeing on a new trade deal with the bloc by the time a status-quo transition arrangement ends in December. Also read: 'Major incident' in Birmingham after several stabbed: British police "We came in after a government and negotiating team that had blinked and had its bluff called at critical moments and the EU had learned not to take our word seriously," negotiator David Frost told the Mail on Sunday. "So a lot of what we are trying to do this year is to get them to realise that we mean what we say and they should take our position seriously," he was quoted as saying. According to Britain, the EU is dragging its feet in talks and has failed to fully accept that it is now an independent country. "We are not going to be a client state. We are not going to compromise on the fundamentals of having control over our own laws," Frost told the Mail. "We are not going to accept level playing field provisions that lock us in to the way the EU do things," he added. "That's what being an independent country is about, that's what the British people voted for and that's what will happen at the end of the year, come what may," Frost said. As per Frost, a lot of preparation had been done for a possible exit without a trade deal. "I don't think that we are scared of this at all," Frost said. "If we can reach an agreement that regulates trade like Canada's, great. If we can't, it will be an Australian-like trading agreement and we are fully ready for that." (Inputs from Reuters)

The eastern Mediterranean conflict between Turkey and Greece has escalated to the skies. The Ionian seas is now a scene of war with naval frigates, submarines and, the sonic boom of the fighter jets.

The eastern Mediterranean conflict between Turkey and Greece has escalated to the skies. The Ionian seas is now a scene of war with naval frigates, submarines and, the sonic boom of the fighter jets. In the guise of military drills, Turkey and Greece are confronting each other. But, what are they fighting over? Oil and gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean seas. 1.7 billion barrels of oil and 3.5 trillion cubic meters of gas is found in these seas. It's a pot of gold ----- but, in disputed waters. It was Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who started the conflict. He sent a research vessel accompanied by warships to look for oil. Erdogan is challenging maps that were drawn nearly 100 years ago. Erdogan first roped in Libya signing a deal to start drilling. This angered Egypt. Greece said it won't allow Turkey to drill. × Erdogan says it is Turkey's right to do so. He said: "Can those who are standing before us in the Mediterranean and its adjacent areas face up to the sacrifice (the same amount we are willing to sacrifice)? Do the Greek people accept what will happen to them because of their greedy and deficient administrators?" It's a clash of NATO allies. Both Turkey and Greece are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Europe has pressed the panic button. France, Italy and Cyprus have joined the Greek fleet. Europe is backing Greece asking Erdogan to show restraint. EU's Foreign Policy Chief said: "The (EU foreign) ministers were very clear and determined to show eu solidarity with its two affected member states - namely Cyprus and Greece - and they were very clear in their call on Turkish authorities to end any unilateral activities, which are escalating tensions in the Mediterranean and the ministers and the eu are very clear in preferring dialogue." Turkey has long wanted to join the EU. But, this rush to lay siege to the oil wells is backfiring. Instead of membership, Turkey may get sanctions. The Netherlands and Austria, among the richest EU members, are for it. The EU is stressing on dialogue but, is also open to sanction Turkey that'll cut off Ankara's access to European ports, capacities, and technology. Germany, the mediator in this case, is asking Turkey and Greece to halt naval exercises. Germany has an obligation to both countries. As the president of the EU council ----- it owes its power to Greece. But with 3 million citizens of Turkish origin attacking Erdogan may cause unrest at home. Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that he is paying attention to every little spark that can lead to catastrophe.

Germany on Thursday called for an end to naval exercises in the eastern Mediterranean Sea to allow space for talks between Greece and Turkey, at odds over gas resources and maritime borders.

EU foreign ministers meeting in Berlin are discussing tensions in the area, where the two NATO members are locked in a standoff observers fear could accidentally tip into conflict.

Turkey on Thursday announced new "gunnery exercises" at the edge of its territorial waters in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean, after Greece -- joined by France, Cyprus and Italy -- staged its own war games.

"We need a diplomatic solution to this conflict... The preconditions for these talks are that these manoeuvres in the eastern Mediterranean, are stopped," German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who has tried to mediate between the two countries, told reporters in Berlin.

"For sure the parties will not sit down at the table when warships are facing each other in the eastern Mediterranean."

The EU has long been angered by Turkey sending ships on exploratory missions to drill for gas in waters claimed by Cyprus and earlier this year imposed sanctions on two Turkish nationals involved in the work.

The bloc's diplomatic chief Josep Borrell will present ministers with a "range of options" for dealing with Turkey, officials say, though he has been keen to stress the importance of keeping dialogue with Ankara going.

But there is pressure from some quarters for tough action on Turkey, and while the Berlin meeting is an informal one, with no decisions to be taken, EU leaders will focus on the issue at a summit next month.

"Europe's credibility is at stake. The European Union, a union of 27 member states, must stand up for international values, for a global international order based on the values and principles of the European Union," Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said as he arrived for the talks in Berlin.

"EU solidarity must be real and substantial."

Belarus sunk in political unrest: Wave of mass anti-government protests

Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon on Monday was given a green light for her independent country to join the European Union.

Ever since the EU referendum in 2016, the Scottish National Party have argued for a second independence vote so that an independent Scotland could apply to return to the EU.

To bolster the argument, Sturgeon cited the 62 percent vote in favour of Remain in Scotland.

In an interview with British tabloid The Express UK, she said "Any barriers for Scotland in joining the EU are political rather than legal, because any candidate to join the EU has to abide by the terms set. It would be fairly easy to meet those terms because Scottish law is currently fully compliant with EU law.''

"As time goes on there are likely to become greater divergences, but that would simply mean at the time Scotland wanted to join the EU we'd have to change stuff then," she added.

According to public law expert Professor Aileen McHarg, while countries like Spain have shunned Scotland in the past, it could be easy for an independent Scotland to rejoin now as Sturgeon is trying to guarantee Scotland remains aligned with EU law.

In June, Scotland introduced the Scottish Continuity Bill aimed to empower Scottish ministers to make amendments that would enable Scottish law to be aligned with EU law after the end of the Brexit transition period.

Former European Council president Donald Tusk said in February that Brussels feels "empathy" towards an independent Scotland joining the EU.
