Merkel said these statements while talking about the future relations between Brussels and London after Britain leaves the union.&nbsp;

In an interview with Europa newspaper alliance, Merkel said that the British PM Boris Johnson "will of course have to accept the consequences -- that is, an economy less tightly linked" with the EU.&nbsp;

Britain left the EU in January and will no longer be required to follow the bloc's financial rules after December, when a transition period ends, whereas, Germany is set &nbsp;to take over the EU's rotating presidency for six months from July 1.

"We must get away from the idea that it is we who define what the United Kingdom may wish," indicated Merkel, who has consistently sought to help bring about an outcome which avoids a hard Brexit.

"The United Kingdom defines and we, as the EU27, make an appropriate response," said Merkel.

"If the United Kingdom does not want regulations comparable to that of Europe in terms of the environment, the labour market or social norms, our relations will lose intensity," she observed.

The European Union has to find a way &nbsp;through tough negotiations on a 750 billion ($800 billion) post-coronavirus euro recovery fund for countries worst hit by the pandemic.&nbsp;

For Merkel, the fund "cannot resolve all of Europe's problems" but the bloc must "act quickly in the face of the pandemic given the huge hit the virus has dealt jobs and the economy."

Merkel feared that the results could have an "explosive political impact" that could threaten democracy.

"For Europe to survive, its economy must also survive," she concluded.

Apple on Tuesday found itself the target of two EU antitrust investigations into its App Store and Apple Pay as regulators said its terms and conditions and restrictions may violate the bloc's competition rules.

The European Commission said one probe will look into the mandatory use of Apple's proprietary in-app purchase system and restrictions on developers' ability to inform iPhone and iPad users of other cheaper purchasing possibilities outside of apps.

Amazon may face EU antitrust charges in the coming weeks over its use of data from merchants with whom it competes on its platform, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday, putting it at risk of a hefty fine.

The European Commission has been investigating the US online retailer's dual role as a marketplace for merchants and as a rival since July last year, triggered by complaints from traders about Amazon's practices.

The probe also focuses on how Amazon uses competitively sensitive merchant data to select winners for its "buy box", which allows customers to add items from a specific retailer directly into their shopping carts.

The EU competition enforcer may soon send a charge sheet called a statement of objections to the company, outlining suspected violations of antitrust laws, the person said.

Both the Commission and Amazon declined to comment.

The company will be required to respond to the charge sheet in writing and can also ask for a closed-door hearing to defend itself. If the competition enforcer finds it has breached EU laws, the company could could face a fine up to 10% of its global turnover.

Amazon has faced EU Commission scrutiny in the past. Three years ago, it was told to pay back taxes of about 250 million euros to Luxembourg because of illegal tax benefits, just four months after settling with the EU over its distribution deals with e-book publishers in Europe.

An EU task force has set an eye on the Chinese video app TikTok. The task force will be examining the app's practices. The bloc's privacy watchdog warned EU police forces against using facial recognition software from the American company Clearview AI.&nbsp;

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) said that it will set up a task force to examine TikTok's activities across the bloc after a request by an EU lawmaker. The lawmaker is concerned about the application's data collection methods and security and privacy risks.

TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, allows users to create short videos and has seen its popularity rise during the coronavirus pandemic.

Clearview AI scrapes the internet for publicly available photos and uses facial recognition to identify potential suspects, triggering criticism in Canada and the United States about potential misuse.

"The EDPB has doubts as to whether any Union or Member State law provides a legal basis for using a service such as the one offered by Clearview AI," the EDPB said.

"The EDPB is therefore of the opinion that the use of a service such as Clearview AI by law enforcement authorities in the European Union would, as it stands, likely not be consistent with the EU data protection regime," it said.

Facebook, Google and Twitter should provide monthly reports on their fight against disinformation, two senior EU officials said on Wednesday as they called out Russia and China for their roles in the spread of fake news.

The comments underscore the bloc's concerns about the prevalence of misleading news on COVID-19 and the attempts by foreign actors to influence Europe.

The Commission said online platforms should provide monthly reports with details on their actions to promote authoritative content and to limit coronavirus disinformation and advertising related to it.

"It really showed that disinformation does not only harm the health of our democracies, it also harms the health of our citizens. It can negatively impact the economy and undermine the response of the public authorities and therefore weaken the health measures," one of the officials said, at a news conference.

The next fake news front was vaccination, citing a study showing that Germans' willingness to be vaccinated had fallen by 20 per cent points in two months.

At the conference, it was also said that video app TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, will be joining the bloc's voluntary code of conduct to combat fake news on its platform.&nbsp;

Signatories to the code of conduct include Google, Facebook, Twitter and Mozilla.
Borrell described the fake news fight as involving warriors wielding keyboards rather than swords.

US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose tariffs on European Union cars if the bloc does not drop its tariff on American lobsters, naming White House trade adviser Peter Navarro the "lobster king" in charge of talks.

Trump, speaking at an event with commercial fishermen, also asked Navarro to identify Chinese products to hit with tariffs unless Beijing dropped its duties on American lobsters.

"If the European Union doesn't drop that tariff immediately, we're going to put a tariff on their cars, which will be equivalent," Trump said.

Greece will be opening its borders for international tourists from June 15, as the country ended its lockdown in May to regain stability in the crippling economy.

However, the government has decided to conduct coronavirus tests for visitors arriving from high-risk areas of the European Union (EU). The tests will be specifically for the airports which have been categorized as 'high-risk' by the European Union's Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

"If the test is negative, then the passenger self-quarantines for 7 days. If the test is positive, the passenger is quarantined under supervision for 14 days,"&nbsp; ministry added.

European Union countries -- France, Italy and Belgium -- have expressed their displeasure about using hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 treatment.&nbsp;

Paris, on Wednesday, revoked a decree allowing doctors to use the drug for severely ill coronavirus patients. The Italian and Belgian officials have asked the concerned authorities to suspend the usage of the drug, except in clinical trials.

The drug, which is being used as a treatment for critically ill coro navirus patients, is believed to have safety concerns. However, US President Donald Trump and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro, have promoted the usage of the drug.

These countries are not the first ones to object against the usage of this drug. World Health Orhanization (WHO), few days ago, suspended a global trial of hydroxychloroquine, citing safety concerns. Oxford University, too, followed the suit and paused a global trial within a week of starting it.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus earlier said that "hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are accepted as generally safe for use in patients with autoimmune diseases or malaria."

A research by France’s Pasteur Institute suggested 98% of people with mild coronavirus developed antibodies capable of neutralising the virus a month later, raising hopes that everyone who has had the disease may enjoy some immunity.

Donald Trump and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele have both publically announced that they have been taking hydroxychloroquine. Both the Presidents have bene heavily criticized and trolled for this admission.

An observational study published in the Lancet of nearly 100,000 patients in 671 hospitals has suggested hydroxychloroquine – promoted by the controversial French infectious diseases specialist Didier Raoult – might increase mortality rates.

The European Commission will today unveil a plan to help the European Union economy recover from the current slum. The stimulus announced could be a mix of grants, loans exceeding 1 trillion dollars. Watch report.

COVID-19 Pandemic: $1 trillion stimulus to be announced by European Union

The European Commission will unveil a mega stimulus plan on Wednesday that help EU's economy after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The plan will include a mix of grants, loans and guarantees exceeding 1 trillion euros that raised controversy even before it was announced.&nbsp;

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/nations-begin-to-loosen-restrictions-amid-coronavirus-pandemic-301199" hreflang="en">Nations begin to loosen restrictions amid coronavirus pandemic</a>

This stimulus package aims to help countries and sectors that have been worst hit by coronavirus to recover as soon as possible. This is to protect the European Union's single market which consists of 450 million people from being fragmented by divergent economic growth and wealth levels as the 27-nation bloc emerges from its deepest-ever recession expected this year.

The package is for countries like Italy, Greece, France, Portugal or Spain are burdened with high debt, they are dependant on the tourism sector. &nbsp;This sector has faced maximum losses due to the pandemic.&nbsp;

The controversy of the plan is that the Commission will borrow cheaply on the market against the security of the EU budget and then give some of the borrowed money, rather than lend it on, to those who need it most.

The stimulus package will also grant loans, repaid by governments who take them, and guarantees that could draw in many times more in private cash by reducing the risk of various investments.

But for countries like Netherlands, Sweden, Austria or Denmark, such grants are a concern as these loans will be financed by joint borrowing. Which means higher national contributions to the EU budget in the future or new taxes assigned to the EU.

The European Commission will propose new taxes as a follow up on its 2018 proposal. In 2018, the Commission asked EU governments to give it EU revenues from a tax on plastics and some money from the CO2 emissions trading scheme and national corporate taxes. It also proposed to phase out all the rebates various countries enjoy on their national contributions to the EU budget, halve the number of customs duties governments keep and to get a bigger share of the Value Added Tax paid to the EU.

The Commission did not get any support for the proposal two years ago.&nbsp;

The recovery money is to be used by the governments to transform to an economy that is climate neutral - emitting no more CO2 than it absorbs - by 2050 and more adapted to the digital age which are both EU priorities.

A new report by European Union claimed that China is trying to 'divide & rule'. Is China driving a wedge through EU Bloc?

EU's new report claims China is trying to 'divide & rule'

The European Union has pushed for gradual reopening of internal borders--which are shut due to the coronavirus pandemic. The commission has expressed that it was not too late to salvage the summer season for tourism and has also recommended a phased approach to reopen the borders.

EU recommendations for tourism &amp; travel
- overall strategy on the recovery of tourism in 2020
- coordinated, gradual and safe lifting of restrictions
- a framework to ensure the safety of passengers &amp; personnel
- use vouchers as an attractive alternative for travellers
- ensure health protocols are followed in all public spaces&nbsp;

In Europe, the tourism sector accounts for about 10 per cent of the whole bloc's economy. But, with inevitable lockdown--the sector has suffered an unimaginable loss.

Now, the EU has urged member nations to adopt unrestricted free movement once again and has envisaged a framework to revive the travel and tourism business across the continent.
&nbsp;
EU commission executive vice-president, Margrethe Vestager, said: "People need of course to be able to travel between European countries. So we're giving guidance on how to gradually re-open transport links without risking the health of travellers or transport workers. Third (point): travellers and workers, they need to know that the places that the tourists visit are safe. Hotels, restaurants, beaches, other tourist sights, they need to be run in a way that minimizes the risk of passing on the coronavirus."

Potential travel corridors of EU
- Austria to reopen border with Germany and Czech soon
- Estonia, Latvia &amp; Lithuania to reopen each other's border
- Greece to reopen borders with Cyprus, Austria &amp; Germany &nbsp;
- Israel, non-EU member likely to open its border for Greece

Countries like Italy, Spain, and France--which are battered by coronavirus pandemic are also some of the major tourist destinations in Europe.

The governments of these three countries are already strategising an exit plan for lockdown and likely to restart operations soon.

Austria and Germany plan to fully reopen their border and Switzerland with an exception of Italy will start free travel on June 15.

Authorities in Spain are planning to keep the country's borders closed until July. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the aim was to eliminate border controls from June 15 across the Schengen area. However, experts have warned about a possible second wave of infections.

EU transport commissioner, Adina Valean, about compensations offered by companies over cancelled travel or holidays due to the COVID-19 pandemic said: "Of course, we are the guardians of the (European Union) treaty and we are looking at how (European Union) member states are implementing legislation (on customers' right) and if this situation of infringing the European law would emerge in various member states, of course, we are determined to take steps but this would be I would say a different letter, a letter of infringement, a different letter from the one I'm going to send with (European justice) commissioner (Didier) Reynders tomorrow."

Most EU member nations have imposed emergency border control rules and have adopted strict social distancing measures.

More than 6 million people in the are currently jobless and the tourism sector is at the brink of collapse.

As of now, the deadly virus has infected more than 1.6 million and has killed over 157,000 in Europe.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte warned Monday that his country was entering "the riskiest weeks" and urged a coordinated European response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"European coordination on health and economic measures is needed," Conte told the Corriere Della Sera newspaper ahead of a planned videoconference Monday between Group of Seven (G7) leaders.

"It is time for courageous choices and Italy can offer a significant contribution as the country that was the first in Europe to have experienced such a widespread of the virus," he said.

Migrant deal with European Union needs to be updated: Turkey

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Tuesday slammed Turkey for trying to "blackmail" the EU by opening its borders to thousands of refugees seeking to flee to Europe.

"It is an attack by Turkey against the European Union and Greece. People are being used to pressure Europe. The EU must not be susceptible to blackmail," Kurz told reporters.

Turkey has given a green light to refugees and migrants on its territory, many of them displaced Syrians, to leave for the European Union, in defiance of a 2016 deal to keep them in.

Kurz accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of luring people with "false promises" and transporting them to the Greek border from where they are seeking to enter Europe -- using them as a "weapon" to pressure the EU.

Kurz said it was a "test" for the EU to see whether it can protect its outer borders, saying Austria stood ready to support Greece and any other countries which may face an "onslaught".

"I can guarantee you one thing: if the outer borders of the EU don't work, then Europe without (inner) borders is history," he said.

"We must together make sure that year 2015 doesn't repeat itself," he added, referring to a surge in people entering the EU to seek asylum five years ago.

The conservative Kurz in January formed a government with the Greens after his coalition with the far-right broke apart after one and a half years when a corruption scandal engulfed his junior partner.

Kurz has promised to maintain his hardline stance on immigration even within the new coalition, with the Greens accepting it so far in exchange for being able to push their climate agenda.

On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel described Turkey's move as "unacceptable" and EU migration commissioner Margaritis Schinas said no one could "blackmail or intimidate the EU".

Ankara's move comes amid intense fighting in the Syrian region of Idlib between pro-government forces and jihadists and Ankara-backed rebels.&nbsp;

EU countries have no reason to use 5G mobile technology from Huawei because Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia and South Korea's Samsung are on par with the Chinese group in the field, a senior US diplomat said.

EU countries have no reason to use 5G mobile technology from Huawei because Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia and South Korea's Samsung are on par with the Chinese group in the field, a senior US diplomat said. Robert Strayer, deputy assistant secretary for cyber, international communications and information policy at the US State Department, said on a visit to Lisbon it was "necessary to demystify" the notion that Huawei is more advanced in 5G. Washington wants its allies to ban Huawei, the world's largest producer of telecoms equipment, arguing the use of its kit creates the potential for espionage by China - a claim denied by Huawei and Beijing. Also Read: Why global battle over Huawei could prove more disruptive than Donald Trump’s trade war with China Its stance has sparked tensions with allies such as Britain, whose Prime Minister Boris Johnson has granted Huawei a limited role in building a 5G mobile network. Strayer said the United States is encouraging European countries to think carefully about the security and economic implications of rushing forward with using Huawei's technology. "There is no way to fully mitigate any type of risk except the use of trusted vendors from democratic countries," Strayer told reporters. "The good news is Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung all provide 5G technology that is on par with the one Huawei is providing today. They are leading the world in the type of technology they have." Watch: US expands lawsuit against Huawei Huawei says it spent $15 billion last year on research to help it achieve market leadership and has said the United States wants to frustrate its growth because no US company could offer the same range of technology at a competitive price. Strayer said Western vendors such as Ericsson and Nokia will use an open architecture with more functionality, creating opportunities for companies in the United States and Europe to provide compatible equipment. American companies like Dell, Cisco, Juniper and VMware "want to play a future role", he said, seeing many European companies also getting involved. The European Union has said it would allow members to decide what part China's Huawei can play in 5G networks. Portugal last month approved guidelines for its 5G strategy and launched a working group to permanently monitor the risks and security of this network.
