Employees have dawned their negotiating capes like never before. As the pandemic dust settles they've emerged with newfound bargaining power over their employers.

Pyjama-clad titans: Employees conquering from home

In what comes as a violation of workers as well as human rights, three senior managers at a Kenyan dairy company have been arrested over allegations of indecent assault. The managers forced a group of female employees to strip in order to determine which of them were on their period.&nbsp;

The shocking incident took place last week at&nbsp;Brown’s Food Company’s dairy factory&nbsp;located in Limuru, central Kenya. Interestingly, all three managers were women and they undertook the strip search to find out who had put the sanitary pad in the wrong bin.&nbsp;

Sub-County Police Commander Philip Mwania said the three managers had been arrested and would be presented before the court once investigations were complete.&nbsp;

<h2>Company issues statement&nbsp;</h2>

After the controversy snowballed, the company took evasive measures and suspended the managers. It also released a statement saying an investigation had been launched to reach the end of the "shocking" incident.&nbsp;

“Brown’s is a women-led business and works hard to provide a working environment that is safe for all employees. Brown’s has formal HR policies and systems in place and this incident does not reflect the procedures of the company as a whole. We realise we must do better and understand how this happened,” the company said.

“The public is holding us accountable and we will continue to update you on the progress which is being made and the resolution to those affected.”

Kenya: 3 arrested for forcing women employees to strip over sanitary pad

Trouble mounts for the Bengaluru-based ed-tech company Byju’s as it might face action over delayed provident fund (PF) payments to the EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation), reported the Indian media on Monday (June 26). A report by Moneycontrol citing data from the EPFO claimed that the company’s PF contributions have been lagging for months now.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the report find?</h2>

The report by Moneycontrol, citing the data sourced from EPFO, said that the company has been making delayed PF payments since October&nbsp;last year. Additionally, for some employees Byju’s made PF contributions for December only in June, said the report. &nbsp;

Similarly, several employees have reportedly accused the company of not depositing the PF from their salaries in their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts.

The report also noted a lag of three to four months in payments citing the data. However, the company has since reportedly expedited PF payment contributions following another report by Moneycontrol&nbsp;last week.&nbsp;

In the report, the media outlet claimed that employees’ PF passbooks were not showing contributions from November last year while their salary slips showed PF contribution entries.&nbsp;

The data also indicated that only around 10,000-13,000 employees received PF payments for January, February, and March, while a majority of them are still waiting for their PF payments for April and June, the report noted.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian law about PF contributions</h2>

Last year, in February, the Supreme Court ruled that an employer is required to cover damages if there is a delay in an employee’s PF contribution under the PF Act. The legislation requires the companies to make PF contributions before the 15th of next month and in case of any delays employees have the right to file a complaint with the EPFO against the employer.&nbsp;

The complaint would prompt the EPFO to initiate an enquiry against the employer, which in this case could be Byju’s. The company&nbsp;could be asked to recover the damage amount for the late deposit. In some cases, the employees can even file a police complaint against their employers. However, before any action or penalty against the employer, they are given time and opportunity to present their case.&nbsp;

In 2016, the EPFO was probing the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines for delaying its PF&nbsp;contribution to international workers and was later fined $885,240 (Rs 7.62 lakh) for non-compliance. A similar penalty could be issued by the EPFO for Byju’s, said the report by Moneycontrol, citing PF consultants, personal finance experts, and lawyers.&nbsp;

<h2>Has Byju’s responded to these allegations?</h2>

When asked about the allegations of non-payment by Moneycontrol, the company declined to comment. However, also in response to the media outlet’s queries, a Byju’s spokesperson, as per Moneycontrol, said, “This is to confirm that there are no pending PF payments towards employees. There are no dues."

Byju’s might face EPFO action over delayed provident fund payments: Report

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the largest IT firms in India, has been dealing with a tricky situation after the mass resignation of female employees. A report by Bloomberg mentioned that when the IT giant ended the work-from-home policy, more female employees decided not to return to the office as compared to male employees.&nbsp;

Not just TCS, the work-from-home policy was implemented in various sectors during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to curb the spread of the deadly virus. But the economies across the world gradually reopened when the lockdown measures were relaxed and many companies started to call their employees back to office.&nbsp;

But the report shows that the attrition among women was reported to be higher at TCS when it called employees back to work, which was unusual for the company, where female attrition has historically been either lower or similar to their male counterparts.&nbsp;

In the company's annual report last week, Chief Human Resources Officer of TCS Milind Lakkad said, "I would think working from home during the pandemic reset the domestic arrangements for some women, keeping them from returning to office."&nbsp;

"It is a setback to our efforts to promote gender diversity, but we are doubling down on it," Lakkad said, further adding that women make up about 36% of TCS employees. He said that the company is trying to increase their representation, including in leadership roles.&nbsp;

According to the report, the work-from-home scenario has provided the flexibility to work remotely. In recent years, it has helped companies to attract and retain talent.&nbsp;

<h2>WFH: A blessing for women?&nbsp;</h2>

Work-from-home has helped women employees especially as several reports have claimed that they have managed to juggle office and home duties in a hybrid environment. Bloomberg said that the shift now is making them drop out of the workforce, worsening already low participation in the workforce.&nbsp;

According to World Bank data, at 24%, India's female labour force participation is much lower than 61% in China. The report argues that's a risk for economic growth in the world's most populous nation, where women comprise about half of the citizens.&nbsp;

What’s forcing women employees to quit India’s largest IT firm TCS?

A Canadian-based multinational apparel company— Lululemon— is facing massive criticism after it fired two of its female employees for trying to stop the robbers from stealing the products.

The incident occurred last month in Georgia’s Atlanta city in which three masked men blatantly robbed a Lululemon store located at Peachtree Corners.

They were recorded stealing Lululemon’s high-priced athletic wear from tables and displays. One of the employees had filmed the incident.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The clip, now viral, shows the robbers—who have reportedly struck the store at least a dozen times prior—momentarily standing in the store doorway and staring at the women before jumping back inside to snatch several more pairs of leggings.

Soon after the robbery, the employees— Jennifer Ferguson and Rachel Rogers—had called the police to report the incident.

However, the company fired them over a Zoom call for allegedly breaking the company’s policy by calling the cops.

"We didn't really feel very protected or know what else to do," Rogers told local TV station 11Alive on May 30.

"We are not supposed to get in the way," Ferguson told the outlet.

"You kind of clear path for whatever they're going to do. And then, after it's over, you scan a QR code. And that's that. We've been told not to put it in any notes, because that might scare other people. We're not supposed to call the police, not really supposed to talk about it."

They also did not receive severance pay, they claimed.

<h2>CEO's reaction&nbsp;</h2>

However, Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald defended the company in Friday’s interview to CNBC.

“Once a robbery occurs, workers are instructed to scan a QR code. And that’s that. We’ve been told not to put it in any notes, because that might scare other people. We’re not supposed to call the police, not really supposed to talk about it,” he said.

McDonald said that such a policy is in place “because we put the safety of our team, of our guest, front and centre. It’s only merchandise.”

“They’re trained to step back, let the theft occur, know that there’s a technology and there’s cameras and we’re working with law enforcement,” he told CNBC.

McDonald claimed that the two fired female workers — one of whom was an assistant manager — were not fired for reporting the robbery to the cops, rather because they didn’t abide by company policy, which says employees shouldn’t engage with thieves.

The global e-commerce giant Amazon In. has laid off 500 employees across verticals in India, local media reported.

The layoffs will impact its cloud division AWS as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) or HR and support verticals.

The retrenchment is part of the March announcement when the company announced that it was terminating 9,000 employees from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Twitch, advertising, and HR.

This recent round of layoffs at the tech firm marks the second phase of workforce reductions. In January, Amazon had let 18,000 people in January following the decline of tech stocks worldwide.

"We completed the second phase of our planning this month, it led us to these additional 9,000 role reductions", stated a memo by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy shared with employees in March.

AWS CEO Adam Selipsky had initially mentioned that the layoffs at AWS would start from North American, and then reach globally.

"Both our company size and the size of our team have grown significantly in recent years, driven by customer demand for the cloud and the unique value that AWS offers. This growth has come quickly as we have moved as fast as we could to build what customers needed," Selipsky had said.

Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky attributed the layoffs to slow growth of AWS as the business customers were anticipating market turbulence and adopting a more cautious approach to spending.

In the latest development in the world of artificial intelligence, researchers are now working on a technology which can detect if a person has a cold or not from the tone of their voice.

AI has emerged as a breakthrough in the world of technology ever since the inception of tools like Microsoft’s new Bing, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

New ways of using artificial intelligence are being explored by people and the emerging technology is being experimented with at a large scale.

And now reports have emerged that researchers have developed the technology in a way that is capable of detecting if a person is suffering from cold from the tone of their voice.

AI technology may prove useful in helping people detect if they have caught a cold, however, this can prove troublesome for employees who apply for fake sick leaves, lying about suffering from a cold when they are absolutely healthy.

If this technology of detecting cold becomes another revolutionary product in future, it will provide employers with the power to detect which employee is actually suffering from cold and who is faking it just by their voices over a call.

According to a report published by Business Insider, originally attributed to The Economist, the researchers working at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat were able to successfully analyse the vocal patterns collected from 630 people.

Out of these, the technology was able to detect that 111 were suffering from a cold. The researchers analysed the vocal patterns to check if the technology can spot the right people who are actually affected by a cold.

The report added that harmonics (vocal rhythms in human speech) were used by the study to detect the presence of cold in people. As per the science applied in the technology, the harmonics decrease in amplitude when the person's frequency increases.

A person, who has caught a cold, shows an irregular pattern of frequency. Depending on this phenomenon, machine-learning algorithms were utilised by researchers to analyse various individuals' amplification differences and spot those who were suffering from a cold.

It was further reported that the people subjected to the experiment were asked to count from 1 to 40 followed and then describe the activities they did over the weekend.

They were further asked to read Aesop's fable titled The North Wind and the Sun. The accuracy achieved by the study in detecting cold was 70 per cent.&nbsp;

Google not paying for approved maternity leave, claims laid-off employees

As part of its cost-cutting strategy, telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson will layoff 8,500 workers globally, according to a memo written to staff members and seen by Reuters news agency.&nbsp;

"The way headcount reductions will be managed will differ depending on the local country practice," Chief Executive Borje Ekholm wrote in the memo. "In several countries, the headcount reductions have already been communicated this week," he said.

This would be Ericsson's biggest layoff in the telecom&nbsp;sector. Technology giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google have fired thousands of workers due to their financial situations. The corporation, which has over 105,000 employees globally, revealed on Monday that it would eliminate 1,400 positions in Sweden.&nbsp;

Ericsson did not specify which location would be most impacted. As demand weakens in several countries, particularly North America, the corporation declared in December that it will slash expenses by 9 billion crowns ($880 million) by the end of 2023.

"It is our obligation to take this cost out to remain competitive," Ekholm said in the memo. "Our biggest enemy right now may be complacency."

This comes more than a month after the business released lower-than-anticipated fourth-quarter results. Even in high-margin countries like the US, global sales of its 5G equipment have slowed down.&nbsp;

Ericsson has made it clear that it wants to decrease costs, and that would include making significant cuts. As part of its cost-cutting strategy, telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson will layoff 8,500 workers globally, according to a memo written to staff members and seen by Reuters news agency. "The way headcount reductions will be managed will differ depending on the local country practice," Chief Executive Borje Ekholm wrote in the memo. "In several countries, the headcount reductions have already been communicated this week," he said. This would be Ericsson's biggest layoff in the telecom sector. Technology giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google have fired thousands of workers due to their financial situations. The corporation, which has over 105,000 employees globally, revealed on Monday that it would eliminate 1,400 positions in Sweden. "It is our obligation to take this cost out to remain competitive," Ekholm said in the memo. "Our biggest enemy right now may be complacency." &nbsp;The cloud employees and partners have been asked by Google to share their desks and decide alternate days when they and their desk mates will be in the office from next quarter, &nbsp;citing “real estate efficiency,” CNBC reported.

The new desk-sharing model will be applicable in the five largest US locations of Google Cloud, which are Kirkland, Washington; New York City; San Francisco; Seattle; and Sunnyvale, California and is taking place so that the company “can continue to invest in Cloud’s growth,” as per an internal FAQ recently shared with cloud employees. “Most Googlers will now share a desk with one other Googler,” stated the internal document, adding that the employees are expected to come to the office on alternate days so that they are not on the same desk on the same day. “Through the matching process, they will agree on a basic desk setup and establish norms with their desk partner and teams to ensure a positive experience in the new shared environment," the document read.

Google downsizes office, asks employees to share desks

Around 453 people were laid off through an official email late at night on Thursday from Google's India offices as per a report, which further claimed that firing took place across different departments.

Google India's Country Head and Vice President Sanjay Gupta sent an email to the employees who were laid off and informed them about their sudden, said the report published by the Business Line.

However, this remains unknown whether this is a fresh round of layoffs or is part of the company's plan to cut down the staffing by around 12,000 which is 6% of its global workforce, as was announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in January.

Informing the employees about the move in an email, Pichai took 'full responsibility for the decisions that led the company to this juncture and added that a ‘rigorous review' was undertaken by the company before reaching this conclusion.

“The roles we're eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across (parent firm) Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions,” Pichai wrote in the mail.

Amazon is planning to fire 20,000 employees currently working in the company. In the coming months, Amazon will go through a huge layoff and the employees will be fired from their distribution centers located in several regions.

Amazon set to fire 20,000 employees, including top managers

As per reports, Amazon is planning to fire 20,000 employees currently working in the company. In the coming months, Amazon will go through a huge layoff and the employees will be fired from their distribution centres located in several regions. The corporate executive and technology staff will also be fired by the company, the DNA reported.

CEO Andy Jassy had earlier hinted about the layoff, however, he had not clearly specified the number of employees to be laid off. The New York Times had, in November, reported that the company was considering laying off employees.

However, a recent report now claims that the number of employees likely to be fired has now increased to 20,000 and that people at all levels are likely to be fired by the company. Recently, Amazon’s CEO announced that they would continue the process of a layoff and that the employees who will be impacted will be informed after everything is assessed by the company.

“Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means there will be more role reductions as leaders continue to make adjustments. Those decisions will be shared with impacted employees and organisations early in 2023. We haven’t concluded yet exactly how many other roles will be impacted (we know that there will be reductions in our Stores and PXT organisations), but each leader will communicate to their respective teams when we have the details nailed down. And, as has been the case this week, we will prioritise communicating directly with impacted employees before making broad public or internal announcements,” Andy stated.

It appears to be the ‘layoff season’ in the United States, as a Mississippi-based furniture company abruptly fired all of its 2,700 of its employees ahead of Thanksgiving, according to multiple media reports. Employees were reportedly sent an email or a text message asking them to not come to work the next day.&nbsp;

“At the instruction of the board of directors…we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on November 21,” said the United Furniture Industries (UFI), in one of the messages sent to workers, reported the New York Post.&nbsp;

“Your layoff from the company is expected to be permanent and all benefits will be terminated immediately without provision of COBRA,” said the UFI, in the message. The provision referred to is a federal law which gives employees an option (in some cases) to retain their health insurance, which is paid for by the employer.

The messages were sent right before midnight on November 21 while several employees were asleep, said a report by the Guardian. However, the “over-the-road drivers” that were out of delivery were an exception to the immediate termination and were told that they will be paid for the rest of the week but they should “return equipment, inventory and delivery documents,” immediately, said the New York post citing the memo.&nbsp;

The company was at least two decades old and had reportedly fired three of its top executives earlier this year. This was followed by UFI firing at least 500 employees across three states, North Carolina, Mississippi and California, said media reports.&nbsp;

A company spokesperson told FreightWaves that the employees were asked to come on Tuesday to gather their belongings. The email said, “We are not certain of the timeframe for this but will communicate proactively.” Reportedly, no other explanation was given to the workers for their abrupt termination and the employees have since expressed shock and anger.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a former employee in Mississippi has reportedly filed a lawsuit against UFI alleging that they violated federal law, according to which a worker must be given a 60-day notice before the company shuts its operations.

A recent report by Engadget stated that a third of Amazon's new joinings stayed for over three weeks and later are either quitting, being fired or being laid off. The report stated that it's just not workers but the managers who are also leaving and if not leaving, they are advancing their careers.&nbsp;

The report suggested that the company is facing serious issues in retaining employees. It further revealed that the company's global attrition last year was nearly $8 billion in consumer field operations, The Verge reported.&nbsp;

The report is based on a few Amazon research papers, and spreadsheets. It claimed that workers are more likely to quit rather than be fired or laid off.&nbsp;

It was further identified that the problem exists in all tiers of the company and just not limited to the warehouse workers or a few tiers. The report however did not specify the attrition rate of tiers.&nbsp;

Another factor the report stated is that&nbsp;nearly three per cent of hourly employees quit each week, as per a report by The New York Times.&nbsp;

Finding a perfect work-life balance has been a daunting task for every professional. Despite best efforts, it has been difficult to spend quality time with the family as one is swarmed with overwork. In an effort to find the right balance, South Korean tech behemoth Samsung has brought an innovative new gadget that can help people prevent overworking.

This radical innovation is in fact a computer mouse that will stop working after the scheduled office hours.

Dubbed ‘Samsung Balance Mouse’, this gadget is designed in such a way that it will literally start running&nbsp;from the desk the moment one starts working a lot.

Recently, the tech giant shared a concept video of the mouse on its official Korean YouTube channel.

In the clip, a man can be seen working and as he reaches the mouse past 6 pm, the new Samsung mouse starts running away.

According to Samsung, the wheels of the mouse are activated as soon as it detects the hand movement and it starts running away.

The clip further shows that when the man tries hard and forcefully grabs the mouse, it detaches itself from the central part and runs away.

In the video, Samsung said that a majority of workers are hesitant to leave the office on time as they are always under immense pressure to complete their pending tasks.

They assert that the primary reason behind conceptualising the Balance Mouse was to improve the work-life balance in Korea.

Sadly, since this mouse is in the initial concept stage, it is unknown when the gadget will be available for purchase. This concept was created in association with an ad agency.
