<p>The Tihar Jail administration has served termination notice to its 50 employees after a verification drive found a mismatch in their biometric identification records, officials said on Saturday. Officials said that 50 terminated employees were among the 450 on probation recruited after an exam and it is suspected that someone else had appeared for them in the exam.</p>

<p>According to the Tihar Jail administration, among these 50 terminated employees, 39 are warders, 9 are assistant superintendent and 2 are matron.</p>

<p>The notice was served as per the direction of the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSB), which had conducted the exam&nbsp;and recruited about 450 applicants for these three posts, officials said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of these 450 employees, the biometric identification did not match for 50 of them, due to which the notice of termination has been served to them, they added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is suspected that somebody else had taken their exam," an official said.</p>

<p>All these employees were on probation period for two years, the official said, adding that they have to respond within one month on the notice.</p>

Kenya: 3 arrested for forcing women employees to strip over sanitary pad

<p>Trouble mounts for the Bengaluru-based ed-tech company Byju’s as it might face action over delayed provident fund (PF) payments to the EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation), reported the Indian media on Monday (June 26). A report by Moneycontrol citing data from the EPFO claimed that the company’s PF contributions have been lagging for months now.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What did the report find?</strong></h2>

<p>The report by Moneycontrol, citing the data sourced from EPFO, said that the company has been making delayed PF payments since October&nbsp;last year. Additionally, for some employees Byju’s made PF contributions for December only in June, said the report. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, several employees have reportedly accused the company of not depositing the PF from their salaries in their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts.</p>

<p>The report also noted a lag of three to four months in payments citing the data. However, the company has since reportedly expedited PF payment contributions following another report by Moneycontrol&nbsp;last week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the report, the media outlet claimed that employees’ PF passbooks were not showing contributions from November last year while their salary slips showed PF contribution entries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data also indicated that only around 10,000-13,000 employees received PF payments for January, February, and March, while a majority of them are still waiting for their PF payments for April and June, the report noted.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Indian law about PF contributions</strong></h2>

<p>Last year, in February, the Supreme Court ruled that an employer is required to cover damages if there is a delay in an employee’s PF contribution under the PF Act. The legislation requires the companies to make PF contributions before the 15th of next month and in case of any delays employees have the right to file a complaint with the EPFO against the employer.&nbsp;</p>

The company&nbsp;could be asked to recover the damage amount for the late deposit. In some cases, the employees can even file a police complaint against their employers. However, before any action or penalty against the employer, they are given time and opportunity to present their case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2016, the EPFO was probing the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines for delaying its PF&nbsp;contribution to international workers and was later fined $885,240 (Rs 7.62 lakh) for non-compliance. A similar penalty could be issued by the EPFO for Byju’s, said the report by Moneycontrol, citing PF consultants, personal finance experts, and lawyers.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Has Byju’s responded to these allegations?</strong></h2>

<p>When asked about the allegations of non-payment by Moneycontrol, the company declined to comment. However, also in response to the media outlet’s queries, a Byju’s spokesperson, as per Moneycontrol, said, “This is to confirm that there are no pending PF payments towards employees. There are no dues."</p>

The report by Moneycontrol, citing the data sourced from EPFO, said that the company has been making delayed PF payments since October last year. Additionally, for some employees Byju’s made PF contributions for December only in June, said the report. Similarly, several employees have reportedly accused the company of not depositing the PF from their salaries in their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. However, the company has since reportedly expedited PF payment contributions following another report by Moneycontrol last week. In the report, the media outlet claimed that employees’ PF passbooks were not showing contributions from November last year while their salary slips showed PF contribution entries. The data also indicated that only around 10,000-13,000 employees received PF payments for January, February, and March, while a majority of them are still waiting for their PF payments for April and June, the report noted. Indian law about PF contributions Last year, in February, the Supreme Court ruled that an employer is required to cover damages if there is a delay in an employee’s PF contribution under the PF Act. The legislation requires the companies to make PF contributions before the 15th of next month and in case of any delays employees have the right to file a complaint with the EPFO against the employer. The company could be asked to recover the damage amount for the late deposit. In some cases, the employees can even file a police complaint against their employers. In 2016, the EPFO was probing the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines for delaying its PF contribution to international workers and was later fined $885,240 (Rs 7.62 lakh) for non-compliance. A similar penalty could be issued by the EPFO for Byju’s, said the report by Moneycontrol, citing PF consultants, personal finance experts, and lawyers. Has Byju’s responded to these allegations? But the economies across the world gradually reopened when the lockdown measures were relaxed and many companies started to call their employees back to office.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the report shows that the attrition among women was reported to be higher at TCS when it called employees back to work, which was unusual for the company, where female attrition has historically been either lower or similar to their male counterparts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the company's annual report last week, Chief Human Resources Officer of TCS Milind Lakkad said, "I would think working from home during the pandemic reset the domestic arrangements for some women, keeping them from returning to office."&nbsp;</p>

What’s forcing women employees to quit India’s largest IT firm TCS?

<p>A Canadian-based multinational apparel company— Lululemon— is facing massive criticism after it fired two of its female employees for trying to stop the robbers from stealing the products.</p>

<p>The incident occurred last month in Georgia’s Atlanta city in which three masked men blatantly robbed a Lululemon store located at Peachtree Corners.</p>

<p>They were recorded stealing Lululemon’s high-priced athletic wear from tables and displays. One of the employees had filmed the incident.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened?</strong></h2>

<p>The clip, now viral, shows the robbers—who have reportedly struck the store at least a dozen times prior—momentarily standing in the store doorway and staring at the women before jumping back inside to snatch several more pairs of leggings.</p>

<p>Soon after the robbery, the employees— Jennifer Ferguson and Rachel Rogers—had called the police to report the incident.</p>

<p>However, the company fired them over a Zoom call for allegedly breaking the company’s policy by calling the cops.</p>

<p>"We didn't really feel very protected or know what else to do," Rogers told local TV station 11Alive on May 30.</p>

<p>"We are not supposed to get in the way," Ferguson told the outlet.</p>

<p>"You kind of clear path for whatever they're going to do. And then, after it's over, you scan a QR code. And that's that. We've been told not to put it in any notes, because that might scare other people. We're not supposed to call the police, not really supposed to talk about it."</p>

<p>They also did not receive severance pay, they claimed.</p>

<h2><strong>CEO's reaction</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>However, Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald defended the company in Friday’s interview to CNBC.</p>

<p>“Once a robbery occurs, workers are instructed to scan a QR code. And that’s that. We’ve been told not to put it in any notes, because that might scare other people. We’re not supposed to call the police, not really supposed to talk about it,” he said.</p>

<p>McDonald said that such a policy is in place “because we put the safety of our team, of our guest, front and centre. It’s only merchandise.”</p>

<p>“They’re trained to step back, let the theft occur, know that there’s a technology and there’s cameras and we’re working with law enforcement,” he told CNBC.</p>

<p>McDonald claimed that the two fired female workers — one of whom was an assistant manager — were not fired for reporting the robbery to the cops, rather because they didn’t abide by company policy, which says employees shouldn’t engage with thieves.</p>

Apple bans employees from using OpenAI's ChatGPT

<p>The global e-commerce giant Amazon In. has laid off 500 employees across verticals in India, local media reported.</p>

<p>The layoffs will impact its cloud division AWS as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) or HR and support verticals.</p>

<p>The retrenchment is part of the March announcement when the company announced that it was terminating 9,000 employees from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Twitch, advertising, and HR.</p>

<p>This recent round of layoffs at the tech firm marks the second phase of workforce reductions. In January, Amazon had let 18,000 people in January following the decline of tech stocks worldwide.</p>

<p>"We completed the second phase of our planning this month, it led us to these additional 9,000 role reductions", stated a memo by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy shared with employees in March.</p>

<p>"Both our company size and the size of our team have grown significantly in recent years, driven by customer demand for the cloud and the unique value that AWS offers. This growth has come quickly as we have moved as fast as we could to build what customers needed," Selipsky had said.</p>

<p>Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky attributed the layoffs to slow growth of AWS as the business customers were anticipating market turbulence and adopting a more cautious approach to spending.</p>

<p>Notably, Amazon's e-commerce business in India has experienced a slowdown in growth, highlighting the challenging market conditions the company is facing in the country.</p>

<p>AI technology may prove useful in helping people detect if they have caught a cold, however, this can prove troublesome for employees who apply for fake sick leaves, lying about suffering from a cold when they are absolutely healthy.</p>

<p>If this technology of detecting cold becomes another revolutionary product in future, it will provide employers with the power to detect which employee is actually suffering from cold and who is faking it just by their voices over a call.</p>

<p>According to a report published by Business Insider, originally attributed to The Economist, the researchers working at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat were able to successfully analyse the vocal patterns collected from 630 people.</p>

<p>Out of these, the technology was able to detect that 111 were suffering from a cold. The researchers analysed the vocal patterns to check if the technology can spot the right people who are actually affected by a cold.</p>

<p>The report added that harmonics (vocal rhythms in human speech) were used by the study to detect the presence of cold in people. As per the science applied in the technology, the harmonics decrease in amplitude when the person's frequency increases.</p>

Google not paying for approved maternity leave, claims laid-off employees

<p>As part of its cost-cutting strategy, telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson will layoff 8,500 workers globally, according to a memo written to staff members and seen by Reuters news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The way headcount reductions will be managed will differ depending on the local country practice," Chief Executive Borje Ekholm wrote in the memo. "In several countries, the headcount reductions have already been communicated this week," he said.</p>

<p>This would be Ericsson's biggest layoff in the telecom&nbsp;sector. Technology giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google have fired thousands of workers due to their financial situations. The corporation, which has over 105,000 employees globally, revealed on Monday that it would eliminate 1,400 positions in Sweden.&nbsp;</p>

Google downsizes office, asks employees to share desks

<p>Around 453 people were laid off through an official email late at night on Thursday from Google's India offices as per a report, which further claimed that firing took place across different departments.</p>

<p>Google India's Country Head and Vice President Sanjay Gupta sent an email to the employees who were laid off and informed them about their sudden, said the report published by the Business Line.</p>

<p>However, this remains unknown whether this is a fresh round of layoffs or is part of the company's plan to cut down the staffing by around 12,000 which is 6% of its global workforce, as was announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in January.</p>

<p>“The roles we're eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across (parent firm) Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions,” Pichai wrote in the mail.</p>

<p>He added that the company went through a “rigorous review across product areas and functions” so that the people and their roles are aligned with the highest priorities of the company.</p>
