The electric car, which does not have a steering wheel or pedal, shuttled between Zoox's two main buildings in Foster City.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"On February 11, 2023, Zoox conducted the first run of its employee shuttle service in Foster City, California, marking the first time in history a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi without traditional driving controls carried passengers on open public roads," said the company in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rollout of the car for public use still seems pretty distant but the company, founded nine years ago is optimistic that it can achieve a breakthrough.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for an undisclosed amount to foray into the electric vehicles market.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Unlike other conventional EVs, Zoox is developing a bidirectional vehicle with no steering wheel or discernible front or back end. It allows the car to comfortably travel in either direction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zoox's competitor is not industry leader Tesla but General Motors Co.'s Cruise and Alphabet's Waymo who are also gunning to ace the robotaxi segment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A 'smart road' that charges big electric vehicles has been constructed. In order to charge your EV, you just need to drive it on this road. There doesn't have to be a wire connecting your road to any charging point.</p>

<p>This road has been constructed in Gotland, a Swedish island 200 kims south of Stockholm. This smart road is 1.6 kilometres long. And there is no fear of anybody getting an electrical shock as the charging wires are buried under the road and aren't even visible. The road appears like any other ordinary one in our neighbourhood.</p>

<p>The road is said to be world's first such road that is designed to charge large vehicles and trucks.</p>

On longer drives, the fear of running out of charge in the middle of nowhere may become a nagging thought. But a project in Sweden has found a novel way and has found a solution to the problem. A 'smart road' that charges big electric vehicles has been constructed. In order to charge your EV, you just need to drive it on this road. There doesn't have to be a wire connecting your road to any charging point. This road has been constructed in Gotland, a Swedish island 200 kims south of Stockholm. This smart road is 1.6 kilometres long. And there is no fear of anybody getting an electrical shock as the charging wires are buried under the road and aren't even visible. The road appears like any other ordinary one in our neighbourhood. The road is said to be world's first such road that is designed to charge large vehicles and trucks. <p>Thanking the oil companies for motivation, Penwarden said that she wanted “to show it can be done”.</p>

<p>The 63-year-old, who had bought a car's body from a wrecker, worked on it for eight months along with her friend.</p>

<p>She explained that she is extremely conscious about the choices she makes and their impact on the environment due to which she wanted to do something to reduce pollution from her own side.</p>

<p>Not only this, but she also packed the front and back of the car with batteries and managed to complete the entire project for £12,300 or $24,000.</p>

<p>She received the help of refrigeration engineer Hagen Bruggemann who has now converted about eight cars to electric engines.</p>

<p>“You can talk as much as you want about all this environmental crap, but you have to implement it,” he says.</p>

<p>“Really, the polluters should be paying – I don’t see why they’re not,” he added.</p>

<p>“The biggest thing is to help stop the biggest polluters as soon as possible – and nothing that we can do as individuals I think matters quite as much as that,” according to Penwarden.</p>

New Zealand government has announced its emission reduction plan in the parliament yesterday it has increased electric vehicle sales, it is one of the key priorities there now and as the country is planning to reduce its carbon emission and reliance on fuel fossils they are going to do that now.

<p>The US&nbsp;carmaker said in February it would manufacture EVs in India and also got approval for the Indian government's $3.5-billion production-linked incentive scheme for making clean-fuel vehicles.</p>

<p>"After careful review, we have decided to no longer pursue EV manufacturing for exports from any of the Indian plants," a spokesperson for Ford India said in an email to Reuters.</p>

<p>There were no further details from the company on its U-turn. Reuters said that the company is going ahead with its business restructuring plans.</p>

<p>"We continue to work closely with unions and other stakeholders to deliver an equitable and balanced plan to mitigate the impacts of restructuring," the spokesperson added.</p>

<p>Talks for the sale of the Sanand plant in Gujarat with Tata Motors were progressing well, while Ford was pursuing multiple suitors for its Chennai factory, India's Economic Times newspaper said in a report, citing people familiar with the matter.</p>

<p>Ford had said earlier that it was considering production of electric vehicles for export from India.</p>

<p>The company had less than 2% of the Indian passenger vehicle market when it stopped production in the country last year, having struggled for more than two decades to generate profits.</p>

<p>Several car makers are planning to make EVs in India, with the government offering billions of dollars in incentives to build EVs and their parts locally as it seeks to cut oil imports and pollution.</p>

<p>California and 15 other states that want the US Postal Service to buy more electric delivery vehicles are suing to halt purchases of thousands of gas-powered trucks as the agency modernises its mail delivery fleet.</p>

<p>Three separate lawsuits, filed by 16 states and environmental groups Thursday in New York and California, ask judges to order a more thorough environmental review before the Postal Service moves forward with the next-generation delivery vehicle programme.</p>

<p>Plaintiffs contend that buying fossil fuel-powered delivery vehicles will cause environmental harm for decades to come.</p>

<p>“Louis DeJoy’s gas-guzzling fleet guarantees decades of pollution with every postcard and package,” said Scott Hochberg, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, referring to the postmaster general.</p>

<p>Rob Bonta, Attorney General of California said that the purchase needs to be stopped before it is late.</p>

<p>“Once this purchase goes through, we’ll be stuck with more than 100,000 new gas-guzzling vehicles on neighborhood streets, serving homes across our state and across the country, for the next 30 years. There won’t be a reset button,” he said, as quoted in The Guardian.</p>

<p>The United States Postal Service (USPS) defended its actions.</p>

<p>“The Postal Service conducted a robust and thorough review and fully complied with all of our obligations under (the National Environmental Policy Act),” it said.</p>

<p>Four Electric Vehicles(EVs) emitted smoke and eventually went up in flames over the last four days in India, thus raising alarm over the safety of these E-scooters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While one incident was reported from Maharashtra, the other three were from Tamil Nadu. Happening at a time when the summer is just beginning to set in across the subcontinent and at a time when people are actively considering switching to Electric vehicles, these events have sparked widespread concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To understand the issues that might have led to the recent fires and to know about possible solutions, WION spoke to Aravind Kumar Chandiran, Assistant Professor, Dept of Chemical Engineering, IIT-Madras.</p>

<p>The key to tackling such issues, lay in the Battery Management System algorithms. Mobile phones and Electric vehicles have a 'Battery Management System'(BMS), which is meant to manage a rechargeable battery, ensure it operates safely and efficiently.&nbsp;</p>

<p>BMS is designed to monitor the parameters(temperature, charging, discharging) associated with the battery pack and its individual cells, apply the collected data to eliminate safety risks and optimize the battery performance.</p>

<p>"Electric vehicles operate in climactic conditions that prevail across India, which includes very cold to hot and humid weather and the battery is required to function across these places. Likewise, there are many users who ride the EV for a few hours every day and for long hauls, whereas others who use it casually, for short rides. There are also differences in charging patterns that the users follow. The algorithms in the BMS, must be extensively tested for these dynamically varying conditions, to facilitate best and safe performance of the batteries" he elaborated. Given that EV are in the initial stages of adoption in India, Aravind Kumar is of the opinion that it is the complete responsibility of the Original Equipment Manufacturers and EV companies to deliver well- tested vehicles, that are suited for Indian conditions and users. However, he also feels that batteries emitting smoke and catching fire/exploding are part of an evolutionary process that was witnessed even in mobile phone batteries, and was eventually perfected.</p>

<p>Speaking about the major factors behind damage caused to electric vehicle batteries, he said that it could be thermal abuse(high or low temperature variations), mechanical abuse(accident or crash) and also electric abuse(overcharging and deep discharging cycles). He added that their lab at IIT Madras was also conducting controlled explosions in batteries by inducing the above abuses, to better understand what specific factors lead to the smoke and fire. "By identifying these symptoms or any minute details and changes that we observe in the batteries under abuse, we will be able to detect the issues before hand and develop sensors or alerts to inform the rider. Once a battery starts emitting smoke, there is only about 30-60seconds for escape and that time is very crucial for the rider" he added.</p>

<p>In terms of developing such mechanisms to detect battery failure, he said that mobiles have finally evolved to a stage where they can warn of overheating, when completely charged, when battery is losing efficiency etc. Likewise, he believes that further research and studies into EV batteries can evolve a triple redundant mechanism to avoid such mishaps. "As more data is available on the EV batteries and their functioning, we can have the BMS and sensors to alert the rider in case of battery danger. With targeted measures, we could even save the battery from further damage and even prevent damage to the vehicle" he adds.</p>

<p>When comparing EV scooters and cars/trucks, scooters are more prone to such battery issues, as scooters lack the liquid cooling technology, which is found in larger vehicles. Despite the higher standards, even the major global automobile and electric vehicle brands have suffered cases of explosion in their models of Electric cars. It is notable that while mobile phone batteries store approximately 10 Watt hours of energy, electric vehicles store few Kilowatt hour to tens of Kilo Watt hours of energy, which is exponentially higher and thus making the complications of heating, thermal management, etc very high. As a researcher in the field, Aravind feels that such setbacks and mishaps are part of the evolution of the technology, and it would eventually lead to better solutions and safety systems being built into EVs.</p>

However, he also feels that batteries emitting smoke and catching fire/exploding are part of an evolutionary process that was witnessed even in mobile phone batteries, and was eventually perfected. Speaking about the major factors behind damage caused to electric vehicle batteries, he said that it could be thermal abuse(high or low temperature variations), mechanical abuse(accident or crash) and also electric abuse(overcharging and deep discharging cycles). He added that their lab at IIT Madras was also conducting controlled explosions in batteries by inducing the above abuses, to better understand what specific factors lead to the smoke and fire. "By identifying these symptoms or any minute details and changes that we observe in the batteries under abuse, we will be able to detect the issues before hand and develop sensors or alerts to inform the rider. Once a battery starts emitting smoke, there is only about 30-60seconds for escape and that time is very crucial for the rider" he added. "As more data is available on the EV batteries and their functioning, we can have the BMS and sensors to alert the rider in case of battery danger. With targeted measures, we could even save the battery from further damage and even prevent damage to the vehicle" he adds. When comparing EV scooters and cars/trucks, scooters are more prone to such battery issues, as scooters lack the liquid cooling technology, which is found in larger vehicles. Despite the higher standards, even the major global automobile and electric vehicle brands have suffered cases of explosion in their models of Electric cars. It is notable that while mobile phone batteries store approximately 10 Watt hours of energy, electric vehicles store few Kilowatt hour to tens of Kilo Watt hours of energy, which is exponentially higher and thus making the complications of heating, thermal management, etc very high. As a researcher in the field, Aravind feels that such setbacks and mishaps are part of the evolution of the technology, and it would eventually lead to better solutions and safety systems being built into EVs.
