Who built Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza? The mystery has haunted scientists for years. Now, ancient inscriptions discovered inside the monument have answered the great question about the mammoth structure. Early studies by ancient Greeks showed that the pyramid was built by 100,000 slaves. Each of them worked in shifts for three months and for over 20 years. However, hints inside the pyramid showed that paid labourers and not slaves built the Great Pyramid of Giza. They were skilled labourers who worked on the pyramid continuously and took only one day off every 10 days. The inscriptions were uncovered by Egyptologist Dr Zahi Hawass and his team while they were scanning a series of narrow chambers above the King’s Chamber.
Great Pyramid mystery: Statues on labourers and tombs found inside pyramid
Dr Hawass made the revelation during an episode of the Matt Beall Limitless podcast. His team calls this group of men "work gangs" belonging to the 13th-century BC who left markings on the walls of the pyramid that had never been seen before. Besides the inscriptions, the team also uncovered tombs of these labourers south of the pyramid. There are also statues of workers carrying stones and 21 hieroglyphic titles describing them as "overseer of the side of the pyramid" and “craftsman.” Hawass said that if they were slaves, then they would not have their tombs inside the pyramid. A quarry just 1,000 feet away from the site provided the limestone to build the pyramid, which was transported using a rubble-and-mud ramp. Now, Hawass plans to send a robot into the Great Pyramid to learn more about it. This is not the first time that inscriptions have been found etched on the walls of the pyramid. Experts dismissed them as fake, saying someone forged them hundreds of years after it was built. But now that Hawass has found "three more cartes within the King's Chamber", it seems likely that the labourers who built the pyramid etched them. Scientists have extracted and sequenced the oldest Egyptian DNA yet that belongs to a man who lived around 4,500 to 4,800 years ago. The study was published in the journal Nature by researchers from the Francis Crick Institute and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). It is also the first whole genome (the entire set of DNA in an individual) from ancient Egypt. The period the man belongs to is when the first pyramids appeared. The breakthrough comes 40 years after Nobel Prize winner Svante Pääbo for the first time attempted to extract ancient DNA from individuals from ancient Egypt. The study found that the ancient individual's genetic ancestry goes back to populations in both North Africa and West Asia. This shows that there was genetic diversity among early Egyptians. Till now, researchers believed that exchanges happened in only writing systems or pottery. But genetic evidence has been far to obtain since warm temperatures prevent DNA preservation. Also Read: Scientist suggests Egyptian pyramids were 'ancient ports', built near a Nile branch that disappeared
A complete ancient Egyptian genome put together
Four decades ago, poor DNA preservation prevented the extraction and sequencing of DNA, and researchers could only partially reconstruct the genomes of just three ancient Egyptians. In Egypt’s eastern Nile Delta, there once thrived a city known as Imet. Archaeologists discovered the lost ancient city while excavating Tell el-Fara’in r, an area east of the Nile Delta. Among the ruins hide the many secrets of the Imet - its culture, religion and architecture. Besides, the most intriguing discovery is that the city had a patron deity, the cobra goddess Wadjet. The city offers hints of what life was like during the early-to-middle-fourth century BC in Egypt. The city was first noticed in high-resolution satellite imagery through remote sensing. Scientists saw clusters of ancient mudbricks down below. To learn more about what they were seeing, the scientists dug up the area, and this is when they discovered the tower houses. Researchers at the University of Manchester studied the site and found architectural marvels. There were “substantial tower houses,” which they say were multi-story buildings with exceptionally thick foundation walls. The scientists state that these tower houses were mostly found in the Nile Delta, but were rare elsewhere. This shows that Imet was a thriving city. “These tower houses are mainly found in the Nile Delta between the Late Period and the Roman era, and are rare elsewhere in Egypt,” Nicky Nielsen, researcher with the University of Manchester, said in a statement. “Their presence here shows that Imet was a thriving and densely built city with a complex urban infrastructure.” Also Read: The lost city of Tharais once part of Jordan's Holy Lands has been found
Religion lost prominence in Egypt
Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in a translated statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, that the thick foundation walls were meant to support the huge structures that were built to accommodate several people at the same time. Egypt sees 'positive signals' in Gaza truce talks

The pyramids of Giza, built in Egypt 4,500 years ago, continue to surprise people even today. Archaeologists have now found an entire city underneath the pyramids. They say that the city spans more than 6,500 feet, and is 10 times larger than the pyramids. The claim has been made by researchers from Italy and Scotland. However, it is a claim that several experts were quick to quash.
The researchers used a technology similar to sonar radar to determine what lies beneath the ground. As part of the study, the data was used to create high-resolution images of the region deep within the ground right under the historic pyramids.
The scientists released a paper which is yet to be peer-reviewed and detailed the findings in a press release. They say that they found eight vertical cylinder-shaped structures extending more than 2,100 feet below the pyramid, besides more unknown structures 4,000 feet deeper.

Corrado Malanga, from Italy's University of Pisa, and Filippo Biondi from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland worked together to look inside the ground and claim to have found the structures that could rewrite Egypt's history.
Nicole Ciccolo, the project's spokesperson, said, "A vast underground city has been discovered beneath the pyramids. The groundbreaking study has redefined the boundaries of satellite data analysis and archaeological exploration."

Experts raise doubt over claim of city under pyramids

However, several experts do not believe this is true since according to them, the technology cannot look that deep into the ground. Professor Lawrence Conyers, a radar expert at the University of Denver who focuses on archaeology, told DailyMail.com that the claim of the existence of a city under the pyramids is "a huge exaggeration".
He says that it is perfectly normal for small structures, such as caves, chambers or caverns to lie under the pyramids. He cited the example of "the Mayans and other people in ancient Mesoamerica" who built pyramids on top of things that had "ceremonial meaning".
To know for sure whether there is a city under the pyramids, Professor Conyers suggests "targeted excavations".

Pyramids of Giza

There are three pyramids - Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure - in the Giza complex built on the west bank of the Nile River in the name of pharaohs. Khufu is the oldest one and is also known as the Great Pyramid. It is 480ft tall and 750ft wide at its base. Khafre is the middle pyramid used in the study.
Another peer-reviewed paper in October 2022 found hidden rooms and ramps inside Khafre. The new study used a similar technology and also used data from a satellite.
