Supporters of self-exiled former president Rafael Correa, and centre-left parties Pachakutik and Democratic Left claim that Lasso is guilty of embezzlement for failing to cancel an oil shipping contract. Whereas, Lasso has denied these allegations repeatedly and further maintained that under his watch, FLOPEC, the state shipping company made a record profit.&nbsp;

Lawmakers also accused Lasso of not ending a contract between the state-owned oil transport company Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (FLOPEC) and the private entity Amazonas Tankers, even after knowing that the contract was full of irregularities. Lasso has denied these allegations repeatedly and further maintained that under his watch, FLOPEC, the state shipping company made a record profit. &nbsp;

Following the commencement of the impeachment proceedings on Tuesday, May 16, Lasso stated that "There is no evidence, nor relevant testimonies. Rather, all there is, is information that proves my total, evident and unquestionable innocence." &nbsp;

The South American country has been witnessing a rise in such incidents which have led to the deaths of hundreds of inmates, while the government has attributed to clashes between drug gangs fighting for territory and control. However, a United Nations delegation, last year, found that the violence in Ecuadorian prisons is due to years of neglect by the state of the penitentiary system, reported Reuters.

Since early 2021, more than 400 prisoners have been killed, most of which were found dismembered and burned while at least eight massacres have been recorded in these prisons. This comes as the country’s port city has also become the epicentre of drug trafficking in Ecuador which is also a transit point for cocaine moving to Europe and the United States.&nbsp;

According to the public prosecutor, dozens of attackers arrived in boats and cars at a small port in Esmeraldas province and then opened fire. Taking to Twitter, the public prosecutor said seven bodies were recovered from the port and two more from a nearby health centre.

Speaking to a local news channel, Interior Minister Juan Zapata said that the shooting was carried out by 30 heavily armed people, adding it was related to "a fight between gangs, a territorial fight," the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Zapata said there were between 1,500 and 2,000 people in the port at the time of the shooting. The interior minister added that the shooting happened as fishermen "preferred the security" of one criminal organisation and were targeted by another in retaliation.&nbsp;

Since March 3, the Esmeraldas province has been under a state of emergency due to high levels of crime and violence, as has the port city of Guayaquil. AFP reported on Tuesday that both areas have become increasingly bloody centres of a turf war between rival drug trafficking gangs.

Last month, police found three bodies, including a teenager, wrapped in black bags in the province. Authorities said they were linked to criminal gangs.&nbsp; 
"In three weeks here we have seized 1.2 tons of drugs," Interior Minister Zapata said.&nbsp;

As per the latest figures, 67 people remain missing, while 37 people are injured. With the rescue groups gaining access to houses that were previously trapped under huge amounts of earth, the number of dead as per Reuters is gradually growing.&nbsp;

Ecuador's risk agency in its latest report released on Friday said: "Security protocols to stabilise the ground are being applied so that the teams can continue with the search and rescue work in the affected area, including the use of machinery."

The nation's disaster agency in February had warned of a potential landslide danger for a 247-hectare (610-acre) area in Alausi. Part of the landslide-hit area, as per Reuters, was included in the warning.

On Sunday, Alausi, in the province of Chimborazo, was hit by a landslide that according to official figures affected at least 850 people and destroyed 57 buildings. Heavy rains destroyed roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

Another letter bomb sent to journalist Carlos Vera was timely intercepted by the police at a courier company in Guayaquil and did not reach its destination, Zapata said.

“There is an absolutely clear message to silence journalists," the minister said.

Meanwhile, the government in its statement slammed the incident and said it "categorically rejects any form of violence perpetrated against journalists and media outlets."

“Any attempt to intimidate journalism and freedom of expression is repugnant," it added.

Sandwiched between Colombia and Peru—the world's two largest cocaine producers—Ecuador has emerged to be the hub for the global drug trade in recent years.

Guayaquil is one of its most violent cities, with frequent clashes between criminal gangs disputing drug trafficking routes.

President Guillermo Lasso has declared war on gangs who control the drug trade from prisons engulfed by extreme violence and riots that have left more than 400 inmates dead since 2021.

The high quantities of drug seizures in Ecuador have led to a new and unique construction material, cocaine. This comes after the amount of drugs seized in 2021 doubled in the country when compared to the previous year to more than 210 tonnes, mostly cocaine, said Ecuador’s police. The country is also said to be a transit point for gangs to ship cocaine to the United States and Europe. However, since incumbent President Guillermo Lasso came to power two years ago, Ecuador has ramped up its efforts to stop the flow of illicit drugs in and out of the country.&nbsp;

How does it work?

The country uses a so-called encapsulation method with the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) “out of desperation to make good on destroying the drugs”, the undersecretary for Drug Control at Ecuador’s Interior Ministry, told Reuters. The process includes pulverising seized bricks of cocaine in machines with some other materials at a waste disposal plant and then mixing the fine powder obtained with cement, sand and water to create concrete.&nbsp;

The waste treatment plant which is located at an undisclosed location outside the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito reportedly receives hundreds of blocks of cocaine hydrochloride and coca paste which is the precursor to cocaine, from across the country every week. Subsequently, as per technicians, it is broken down and mixed with glass, expired medicines and even oil waste, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

After this, the powder is mixed with other materials to produce a cement slurry to use in construction. According to the UN drug agency, as this slurry sets it combines with the rest of the materials mixed and forms a stable, hard and impenetrable matrix which prevents cocaine from seeping into the ground or being recovered.&nbsp;

“This procedure is cheaper, takes less time and doesn't affect the environment,”&nbsp;said Ecuador’s Director of Anti-Drug Investigation, Pablo Ramirez, while noting that&nbsp; the encapsulation of a tonne of cocaine takes less than three hours as opposed to incinerating the same amount of the illicit drug which can take at least 12 hours.&nbsp;

However, this cocaine-laced concrete has not been used for construction projects just yet. So far, the Ecuadorian authorities have been using this process to fill 15-metre-deep holes in the undisclosed location of the plant with layers of concrete which would later form a warehouse floor and they have no plans of using the encapsulated cocaine for other projects as of now.&nbsp;

As mentioned earlier, since the country acts as a transit point for drugs sent to the US and Europe, authorities have seized record amounts of the illicit substance over the years. In 2022, while the number of seizures dropped slightly, the quantity of drugs found remained high which led to 27 police warehouses, where the illicit substances are stored before being destroyed, exceeding their maximum capacity.

Mera also told Reuters that the record amounts of drugs also surpassed the number of ovens used to incinerate the drugs which led to Ecuador using some of its excess cocaine to turn into construction material. Notably, the process of encapsulation has helped authorities to free some space at the police drug collection centres.

According to plant technicians, so far, nearly 350 tonnes of cocaine and its precursor coca paste seized between last year and the year before has been turned into construction material. While some 83 tonnes of cocaine is still waiting to be encapsulated, said Ramirez.&nbsp;

In Esmeraldas, at least three explosions were reported and nearly seven prison officers were held hostage by the inmates in protest of prison transfers, said the report. However, they were later released following negotiations.&nbsp;

Maria Belen Bernal went missing on September 11 while paying a visit to her husband at the Quito police training school. Interior minister Patricio Carrillo announced the discovery of her body on Twitter. Her body was discovered on a hill about five kilometres (3.1 miles) from the police training school.

"I deeply regret her death, a femicide that will not go unpunished," Carrillo said.

President Guillermo Lasso, also on Twitter, vowed that Belen's "femicide will not go unpunished and all those responsible will be subject to the law."

According to her family, Bernal entered the police college to see her husband, Lieutenant German Caceres, who worked there. She then <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/myanmar-army-helicopters-target-school-killing-13-people-including-7-children-518059">vanished</a>.

Caceres also vanished two days after she was reported missing, setting up a manhunt and leading to his firing from his position.

The prosecutor's office reports that since 2014, there have been at least 573 femicides in Ecuador, which has a population of 17.7 million people.

As reported by the news agency AFP, Carvajal said he found out about the ancient Franciscan brewery in Quito while reading specialist beer magazines. Notably, he already had experience recovering other yeasts.&nbsp;

It took him a year to do so, but he finally managed to find a barrel from the old brewery in 2008.&nbsp;

Prison&nbsp;officials, aided by the military and the police, were able to regain control of the facility, SNAI said.

Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo later told a press conference that current information indicated "most" of the victims were Venezuelan.

Local media reported that some prisoners were decapitated or dismembered during the&nbsp;fight.

"Relatives of the&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;waited anxiously outside the&nbsp;prison, as images of dismembered bodies reached their cell phones and they remained undaunted by the entry of ambulances," read a story in the national newspaper El Universo.

Carrillo said that the "primitive act of barbarism" indicated the "psychological profile" of the&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;who took part in the brawl.
