The powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of&nbsp;Ecuador&nbsp;(Conaie), which since June 13 has been blocking roads and occupying oil wells in different parts of the country, had demanded a reduction in&nbsp;prices&nbsp;by an additional 30 cents and 35 cents, respectively.

Earlier on Sunday, the country's energy ministry warned that oil production had reached a "critical" level and could be halted entirely within 48 hours if the&nbsp;protests&nbsp;and roadblocks continued.

The&nbsp;protests, which are also against rising living costs, have crippled transportation in&nbsp;Ecuador, with roadblocks set up in 19 of the oil-rich country's 24 provinces.

"Oil production is at a critical level," the ministry said in a statement.

"If this situation continues, the country's oil production will be suspended in less than 48 hours as vandalism, the seizure of oil wells and road closures have prevented the transport of equipment and&nbsp;diesel&nbsp;needed to keep operations going."

"Today, the figures show a decrease of more than 50 percent" in production, which was at roughly 520,000 barrels per day before the&nbsp;protests, it said.

Ecuador's economy is highly dependent on oil revenues, with 65 percent of output exported in the first four months of 2022.

Impeachment debate&nbsp;

Late on Sunday, the country's parliament suspended seven hours of debate over whether to impeach Lasso, with proceedings set to resume on Tuesday. At least 20 members of parliament are still due to speak.

The president's impeachment would require 92 of the 137 possible votes in the National Assembly, where the opposition holds a fragmented majority. MPs will have a maximum of 72 hours to vote following the end of the debate.&nbsp;

An estimated 14,000 protesters have taken part in the nationwide demonstrations, most of them in Quito.

Shortages are already being reported in the capital, where&nbsp;prices&nbsp;have soared.

Violence between police and demonstrators has reportedly left five dead, while about 500 people have been injured.

Earlier in the day, Production Minister Julio Jose Prado said that public-private economic losses from the&nbsp;protests&nbsp;totaled $500 million.

"Each additional day of downtime represents $40 to $50 million lost," he said on Sunday.

Overall losses since the&nbsp;protests&nbsp;began include 8.5 million liters of milk worth $13 million as well as $90 million in agricultural goods and livestock.

The tourism industry has seen cancellations rise to 80 percent, with losses amounting to at least $50 million.

Additionally, "in the flower farm sector, 12 days of shutdown resulted in $30 million in losses and damage to trucks and farms," Prado said.

Clashes with security forces during the protests have left at least 43 people injured, and 37 have been arrested.

In response, Lasso's decree Friday which covers Quito enables the president to mobilize the armed forces to maintain order, suspend civil rights and declare curfews.&nbsp;

"I am committed to defending our capital and our country," Lasso said on television.&nbsp;

"I called for dialogue and the response was more violence. There is no intention to seek solutions."

The demonstrations have largely been concentrated in the northern region of Pichincha and neighboring Cotopaxi and Imbabura.

With spears in hand, Indigenous Amazonians this week temporarily occupied local government headquarters in the provinces of Pastaza and Morona Santiago.

Lasso, a right-wing ex-banker who took office a year ago, met Thursday with Indigenous leaders to assuage discontent but the discussions apparently yielded little result.

Producers of flowers, one of Ecuador's main exports, complained Friday that due to the roadblocks, their wares were rotting.

But the powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), which called the protests, has said it will maintain the road blockades until the government meets 10 demands.

Conaie which has been credited with helping topple three Ecuadorian presidents between 1997 and 2005 wants prices reduced to $1.50 for diesel and $2.10 for petrol, a demand the government has so far rejected.

Its other demands include food price controls and renegotiating the personal bank loans of about four million families.

In response to Lasso's decree, the head of Conaie, Leonidas Iza, insisted the protests would go on "indefinitely."

But Conaie has called for an end to the violence.

On Monday night protesters burned a patrol car and attacked police officers, extinguished a pressure pump in an oil field and damaged infrastructure in some flower farms, the government said.

Iza's arrest on Tuesday prompted further protests, while violence rose in some parts of the country.

"He was intercepted and detained in a violent way, incommunicado for five hours, we didn't know where he was and we still don't know what crime he is accused of," Iza's lawyer Lenin Sarzosa told journalists in Quito. "We have presented a habeas petition for illegal detention."

Iza's organization CONAIE tweeted a video of his detention, describing it as "violent, illegal and arbitrary."

Four people who allegedly participated in crimes and one person who is an intellectual author are awaiting a hearing, Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo wrote on Twitter.

Hundreds of indigenous people arrived in Latacunga, south of capital city Quito, to support Iza on Tuesday afternoon. Other marches were reported in small towns with indigenous populations.

Ecuador's police said officers had been assaulted and several of them detained by protesters in Latacunga.

Community and student groups were also protesting against Lasso's economic reforms in Quito in the afternoon, culminating in an attack on a police car, according to Reuters witnesses.

"Whatever happens, whatever it costs, even if we have to rot in jail, we will keep fighting," said Marlon Vargas, the head of Amazonian indigenous group, Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE).

Lasso has said he will not allow protests to affect economic recovery and will punish any vandalism during protests.

Ecuadorean oil company PetroOriental said it was losing production of some 1,400 barrels per day and had shuttered eight wells in Orellana province after a small group from the Yawepare community occupied its installations, blocked access roads and damaged the tires of military vehicles with spears.

After lifting heavy logs and rummaging through rocks, biologist Andrea Terán can finally say eureka! In her hands she has one of the two species of frog that are waging a unique legal battle against mining in Ecuador.

Drenched by the icy water that comes down from a crystalline waterfall, Terán studies the fragile life of the resistance rocket frog (still without a scientific name) and the long-snouted harlequin (Atelopus longirostris), which was believed to be extinct for 30 years.

The discovery a few years ago of both amphibians, which measure up to four centimeters, caused joy among scientists and environmentalists.

And it became an argument to try to stop a 4,829-hectare mining project inside a cloud forest with prehistoric-looking trees in Junín, in the province of Imbabura, three and a half hours by car north of Quito.

Atelopus longirostris first appeared in 2016. “It was a frog that came back from the dead,” said an emotional Terán, who was accompanied by AFP on an expedition to study these amphibians in a wooded area that is reached after almost two hours of walking.

But “if the water is contaminated (by mining) the last population of this frog is lost,” explained the biologist from the Jambatu Center, dedicated to amphibian research and conservation.

The harlequin snout is extinct according to the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). But scientists found it again in a forest handed over to the Llurimagua copper project, in charge of the state-owned Enami and the Chilean Codelco, whose operation is scheduled for 2024 with a production of 210,000 tons of copper per year.

The concession set off the alarms. And the discovery of a new rocket frog in 2019 only increased action to save this habitat.&nbsp;

Terán led a lawsuit in 2020 in court to stop the exploitation. Although a judge agreed with him in the first instance, he lost on appeal.

In Ecuador -which entered large-scale mining in 2019- there are at least 12 projects in an advanced stage with reserves of some 43.7 million ounces of gold, 46,156 million pounds of copper and 183 million ounces of silver, according to the consultancy Grupo Spurrier.&nbsp;

Ana Beatriz Burbano Proaño, a librarian, kept Estrellita as a pet for 18 years. But in 2019, the authorities moved seized the monkey and moved it to a zoo, saying that owning wild animals as pets is illegal in Ecuador.

A month after it was separated from her owner, the monkey died, following which Proaño filed a habeas corpus petition, asking the court to rule that the monkey’s rights were violated.

The court ruled that Estrellita’s rights were indeed violated by not only the government but also by Burbano Proaño for removing her from her natural habitat at a young age.

The court&nbsp;noted that “wild species and their individuals have the right not to be hunted, fished, captured, collected, extracted, kept, retained, trafficked, traded or exchanged,” and that these creatures have individual value not related to their usefulness to humans.

Following the ruling, noted environmental lawyer Hugo Echeverría said, “This verdict raises animal rights to the level of the constitution, the highest law of Ecuador.”

“While rights of nature were enshrined in the constitution, it was not clear prior to this decision whether individual animals could benefit from the rights of nature and be considered rights holders as a part of nature. The court has stated that animals are subject of rights protected by rights of nature,” he said in a press release.

Crude flowed into the Coca river, one of the largest in Ecuador's part of the Amazon and which serves as a water source for many riverbank communities, including indigenous ones.

"We demand to know... what will be the process of delivering water and food to the communities. It's clear that the river water cannot be used or drunk," the National Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadoran Amazon said on Twitter.

The Cayambe-Coca national park is 4,000 square kilometers (1,544 square miles) of mountains and rainforest in the Amazon basin sitting between 600 and 5,790 meters (1,970 to 19,000 feet) above sea level.

Heavy rains at the end of last week caused landslides and rock falls in the area of Piedra Fina, where the pipeline lies, in the eastern Napo province.

The 485-kilometer-long pipeline straddles four provinces all the way to the Pacific coast in the west, transporting 160,000 barrels of oil a day from wells in the jungle.

In May 2020 a mudslide damaged pipelines in the same area, resulting in 15,000 barrels of oil polluting three Amazon basin rivers, affecting several riverside communities.

On November 14, at least 68 prisoners were killed during a fight between rival gangs at a prison in the Guayaquil city, with inmates attacking each other with guns, machetes and explosives.

On September 28, prisoners from one wing of the prison crawled through a hole to gain access to a different wing, where they attacked rival gang members. Hundreds of officers and army soldiers were deployed to regain control of the complex.

The deadly fight, which saw some inmates decapitated, drew attention to the growing influence in Ecuador of transnational crime gangs such as the Mexico-based Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels.

Nearly 300 inmates have died so far this year in the country's prisons, and September's gang-related violence was the worst in Ecuador's history.

The penitentiary, located in the southern city of Guayaquil, is the same prison where 119 inmates were killed in late September in the country's worst-ever incident of prison violence.

The government has blamed disputes between drug trafficking gangs for control of prisons for the violence.

"Other cell blocks with other groups wanted to subdue them, get inside and have a total massacre."

Videos on social media purportedly posted by detainees overnight showed them begging for help to stop the violence as shots and explosions sounded in the background. Reuters could not independently verify the origin of the videos.
