Iran and Kenya leaders sign trade agreements, pledge to strengthen ties

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi is embarking on a three-day African nation beginning tomorrow. It marks the first step by an Iranian President to Africa in 11 years. Iran has stepped up its foreign diplomacy in recent months.

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi to visit Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe; steps up diplomacy

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has delayed his tour of Africa and now will kick it off a day late on Wednesday (July 12), said Kenyan foreign ministry. The announcement was made after Raisi failed to appear at a scheduled press event in Nairobi.

The rare visit by the Iranian president to Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe has come as the Islamic Republic attempts to forge new alliances and tackle its international isolation. The three-day trip will be the first by an Iranian president to Africa in 11 years.

On Tuesday morning, Raisi was scheduled to hold a press conference with Kenyan President William Ruto. But neither of them showed up.

"The schedule of the president has now been reviewed to allow for finalisation of key MoUs (memoranda of understanding) that are central to the furtherance of relations," Kenya's foreign ministry said.

"The Iranian president will now arrive tomorrow for a state visit," it said, adding that the two leaders would hold bilateral talks at 7:00 am (0400 GMT) on Wednesday.

A Ugandan official said Raisi's trip to the East African country would proceed as previously scheduled, with his two-day visit due to begin on Wednesday.

President Yoweri Museveni and his Iranian counterpart will hold talks, address the media and a business forum during the visit, said Faruk Kirunda, deputy press secretary to the Ugandan leader.

Iran not pursuing nuclear weapons currently: US

A United States assessment has said that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons at the moment. However, it says that Iran has ramped up activities which could help it develop them.

The assessment has come from the office of the Director of National Intelligence and was released on Monday (July 10). It says that Iran has taken steps to increase its capacity to make an atomic bomb since 2020 but has stopped short of that so far.

The findings corresponded with previous U.S. assessments about Iran's nuclear programme, although many in Congress and elsewhere have been sceptical of those.

The Biden administration has been intent on returning to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. The deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA was struck during the Obama administration but his successor, former president Donald Trump pulled USA out of it.

The effort to revive the deal has become complicated in recent months due to suspension of chief negotiator Rob Malley who has been placed on unpaid leave last month pending investigation into claims that he mishandled information.

The Taliban and Iranian forces exchanged heavy gunfire on the Afghan border on Saturday (May 27), killing and wounding troops, escalating tension between Kabul and Tehran amid a dispute over water rights. According to the IRNA news agency, Iran's Deputy Police Chief Gen. Qassem Rezaei accused the Taliban of opening fire on the border of Iran's Sistan and Balochistan provinces and the Afghan province of Nimroz. Citing Iranian police, the IRNA said that two border guards were killed. The agency further added the Milak border crossing with Afghanistan, a major trade route, was closed until further notice. Afghanistan accuses Iran of shooting first The Taliban-led Afghanistan administration accused Iran of shooting first. Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Nafi Takor said Saturday's fighting killed two people, one each from Afghanistan and Iran, and wounded others. Afghan Defence Ministry spokesperson Enayatullah Khawarazmi said that the Taliban considered dialogue to be a reasonable way for any problem, adding, "Making excuses for war and negative actions is not in the interest of any of the parties." Saturday's fighting comes after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi earlier this month warned Afghanistan not to violate Tehran's water rights to the Helmand River. The right to water from the river recently became a controversial issue between the two countries. Raisi said the Taliban should ensure that Tehran's water rights of the river were based on international treaties. On Thursday, President Raisi said that the Taliban should immediately provide Iran with its share of water. Earlier on Saturday, the Taliban’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with an Iranian envoy to Afghanistan to discuss the Helmand River water rights. The news agency IRNA acknowledged the meeting saying “that issues between the two countries will be better resolved through dialogue.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Amid soaring inflation in the country, the Iranian parliament on Sunday voted in an impeachment session to remove industry minister Reza Fatemi Amin. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced the results during a session broadcast live on state television. Amin failed to garner enough votes to save his spot as 162 MPs voted in favour of his removal while 102 against. This was the second instance an impeachment motion had been brought against him. In November last year, Amin managed to stave off the challenge after securing 182 votes. Parliamentarians, who voted to remove industry, mines and trade minister Reza Fatemi-Amin, accused him of failing to control "skyrocketing prices of automobiles and the rising costs of industrial production" and lambasted him for mismanagement. Ahead of the vote, President Ebrahim Raisi batted for him and urged "stability in the management of this ministry". Even Amin argued, "The automobile industry is based on assembly and domestication, so it has problems with the ups and downs of sanctions." According to reports, the major reason that contributed to Amin's downfall was supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in major policies criticising the high prices and low quality of home-made products including cars. China's Xi meets Raisi, calls for Iran nuclear issue's early resolution

Be it on the streets or in digital space, centres in Iran are making use of every sphere to make their presence felt. Iran's anti-government protesters on Saturday hacked the online broadcast, a speech marking the 44th anniversary of Islamic Revolution by the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi speech gets hacked by Edalat-E Ali group

Iran's anti-government protesters on Saturday hacked the online broadcast speech marking the 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The speech was interrupted with placards that read "Death to the Islamic Revolution" and "Death to the Islamic Republic". The group behind the incident was identified as the Edalat-e Ali group. It called on Iranians to withdraw their money from "corrupt" regime banks and to take to the streets next week. While Raisi during his speech called on the protesters to repent, the group is reported to be organizing demonstrations on February 16. This is second such incident where the group hacked an address by Iran's Islamic Regime. Last year in October it interrupted a live state television broadcast of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei meeting state officials. A text on the screen appeared which read "The blood of our youth is on your hands".

Speaking to the crowd gathered at Tehran's expansive Azadi Square, he said that if that is the case then “the Iranian people will embrace them with open arms”.
