In one of the closest encounters ever recorded, a delivery-truck size asteroid passed by Earth coming as close as a tenth of the distance of the orbit of communication satellites. Known as 2023 BU, it flew over the southern tip of South America just before 00:30 am GMT.

With a closest approach of 3,600 km (2,200 miles), it was too close for comfort.

A rare glowing comet is making a trip back to planet earth after a long gap of about 50,000 years. For all the stargazers, you can catch the glimpse of the glowing comet as it will be closest Wednesday and Thursday next week. How close will the comet be to Earth? Well, the exotic comet will shoot past the planet at a mere distance of 2.5 light minutes which is just 27m miles.

The green comet was calculated to orbit the sun every 50,000 years which means the last time the comet tore past our planet was in the time of the Neanderthals. The comet comes from the Oort cloud and gets its beautiful green glow from diatomic carbon (pairs of carbon atoms that are bound together) that is present in the comet's head. When the ultraviolet rays of solar radiation fall on the comet, these molecules emit green light.

The comet was visible last month as well however the glow was not much due to the large distance from our home planet. Astronomers captured pictures which showed the head of the comet's body, its long more tenuous ion and a dust tail. However, as it is set to approach the earth, the comet will be glowing more and can be seen from the naked eye.

A recently discovered comet, C/2022 E3 (ZTF), will approach close to the Earth on February 1 and can be visible to the naked eye. The event is considered rare as it has not been witnessed for the past 50,000 years.

The comet was first found in March last year by astronomers through the wide-field survey camera at the Zwicky Transient Facility, NASA said. At that time, the falling star was passing through Jupiter’s orbit, and it has grown since then.

The comet will come close to Sun on January 12 and pass nearest to the Earth on February 1. It can be seen by anyone, including those who do not have a telescope, provided the sky is not too illuminated by city lights or the Moon.

For those living in Northern Hemisphere, the comet will be visible in January in the early morning, while in the Southern Hemisphere, the comet will make its appearance by early February.

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is made of ice and dust and emits a greenish aura. It is estimated to have a diameter of around a kilometre, Nicolas Biver, an astrophysicist at the Paris Observatory, told AFP news agency.

Space.com reported that the orbital period of the comet was around 50,000 years, which means that it will be making its first approach to Earth in 50,000 years next month.

It is estimated that the comet last passed Earth during the Upper Paleolithic period, when Neanderthals still roamed Earth.

It is believed that the comet may have come from the Oort Cloud, a theorised vast sphere surrounding the Solar System that is home to mysterious icy objects.

Rare comet that was last seen 50,000 years ago to fly past Earth

Fred White, who was a drummer in the popular US band Earth, Wind & Fire, has left for his heavenly abode. He was 67.

On Monday, his brother announced the sad news via a social media post. "Child protege, member of the EWF ORIGINAL 9, with gold records at the young age of 16 years old!" White's older brother wrote.

"Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member," another White's brother, Verdine, said in an Instagram post.

Born in 1955 in Chicago, White began drumming at an early age and went on to win six Grammy awards with the funk band, founded in 1969 by his brother, the late Maurice White.

Earth, Wind & Fire quickly rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming one of the early acts to break the colour barrier in pop music, winning a white fanbase while remaining favourites within the African American community.

In 1979, the band became the first Black act to sell out New York's Madison Square Garden.

The group won acclaim not only for songwriting but for its energetic live shows, led by a forceful horn section and featuring a kalimba, an African percussion instrument played by plucking metal tines.

While never disappearing completely, Earth, Wind & Fire enjoyed a career resurgence after the election of former president Barack Obama, who invited the band as one of the first entertainers when he entered the White House in 2009.

The band's official Instagram page posted a video of White performing a drum solo at a 1979 concert in Germany. "Rest in love," the group wrote.

He went on to work with other performers, including soul singer Deniece Williams.

White, as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire, was inducted in 2000 into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Fred White, Earth, Wind & Fire drummer, passes away at 67

Our Sun may appear bountiful as it supports all life on Earth. But even it has a limited life-span. About five billion years from now, the fuel within the Sun will be spent and the Sun will start expanding. And it will certainly spell doom for planets like Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. However, there are many theories about the grim fate of our Solar System and exactly how the Earth will meet its end (or will it?) is still being discussed in the scientific community.

A new observation of a planet spiralling into a dying star may help us understand and predict what can be the Earth's fate when the only star that sustains it begins to die.

In a new study published on Monday (December 19), a team of mostly US-based researchers said they hope the doomed exoplanet Kepler-1658b can help shed light on how worlds die as their stars get older.

Kepler-1658b, which is 2,600 light years from Earth, is known as a "hot Jupiter" planet.

The planet is similar in size to Jupiter. However, it revolves around its dying star in an orbit one-eighth the distance between Mercury and the Sun. This makes it far hotter than Jupiter in our Solar System.

Kepler-1658b's orbit around its host star takes less than three days -- and it is getting shorter by around 131 milliseconds a year, according to the study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

"If it continues spiralling towards its star at the observed rate, the planet will collide with its star in less than three million years," said Shreyas Vissapragada, a postdoc at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the study's lead author.

"This is the first time we've observed direct evidence for a planet spiralling towards its evolved star," he told AFP.

So could Earth be heading towards a similar doom?

"Death-by-star is a fate thought to await many worlds and could be the Earth's ultimate adios billions of years from now as our Sun grows older," the Center for Astrophysics said in a statement.

Vissapragada said that "in five billion years or so, the Sun will evolve into a red giant star".

While the tidally-driven processes seen on Kepler-1658b "will drive the decay of the Earth's orbit towards the Sun," that effect could be counter-balanced by the Sun losing mass, he said.

"The ultimate fate of the Earth is somewhat unclear," he added.

Kepler-1658b was the first exoplanet ever observed by the Kepler space telescope, which launched in 2009. However it took nearly a decade of work before the planet's existence was confirmed in 2019, the Center for Astrophysics said.

Over 13 years, astronomers were able to observe the slow but steady change in the planet's orbit as it crossed the face of its host star.

A planet spiralling into dying star may tell us about how Earth will be destroyed

Earth's magnetosphere was damaged on Monday by a powerful shockwave that entered the planet. According to a report by Space Weather, the mysterious shockwave could lead to a geomagnetic storm as the barrage of plasma smashed into Earth's magnetic field.

For the unversed, the magnetosphere is our planet's protective shield which is created by the magnetic field that protects Earth from harmful radiation.

Experts have noted that the magnetosphere is a region of space surrounding an astronomical object in which charged particles are affected by that object's magnetic field.

As per the reports, the exact origin of‌ the shockwave is not known. But the astronomers did mention that it could be a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is an ejection of energetic and highly magnetised, superheated gas released from the sun.

As per reports, astronomers have also warned that such a powerful shockwave could damage the solar winds flow through, eventually disrupting the communications and electrical equipment.

The shockwave could have been launched from a region on the sun's surface, known as AR3165. After its launch, the CMEs can travel at speeds in the millions of miles per hour. With their high speed, they carry charged particles from the solar wind to form a wavefront that can trigger geomagnetic storms.

A geomagnetic storm is a temporary disturbance of the Earth's magnetosphere, which is caused by a solar wind shock wave or cloud of the magnetic field that interacts with the Earth's magnetic field.

These storms cause the atmosphere to warm and atmospheric density at our low deployment altitudes to increase.

ALSO READ | New era of space exploration: Indian space industry witnessed major milestones in 2022 As per the reports, the exact origin of‌ the shockwave is not known. Sun activity from flaring is low but a coronal hole in the sun’s northern hemisphere is the source of a high-speed solar wind impacting Earth’s magnetic field. By December 21, we might see a minor geomagnetic storm. Insects may be a pesky nuisance most of the time but the entire Phylum Arthropoda (just a scientific term grouping the critters) are part of a delicate balance that's life on the planet Earth. They may literally suck our blood but they also pollinate crops and help us grow food. Insects ared directly responsible for our continued presence on the blue planet.

But human-made changes like climate change are not only creating problems for us but also for insects. A new study has said that climate change may cause 65 per cent of insects that were studied to go extinct.

The study has been published in scientific journal Nature Climate Change. The study is titled "Climate-mediated shifts in temperature fluctuations promote extinction risk."

The study said that due to climate change, 65 per cent of the 38 species of insects that were studied will face increased risk of extinction in next 50 to 100 years.

Cold blooded insects are more susceptible to ill effects of climate change as they do not have the ability to change their body temperature in accordance with changing external temperature.

US Department of Defense has supported the research.

"We needed a modeling tool to understand how insect populations will be affected by variations in temperature," said Dr Kate Duffy, a former postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Ames Research Centre.

"And that's what we aimed to offer with this study: a more direct and accurate way for scientists to understand this dynamic," she added.

Climate change may kill 65 per cent of insects on Earth, says a study

The nearest black hole to Earth has been found by astronomers, and it is just 1,600 light-years away. Scientists revealed on Friday that this black hole is 10 times as large as the Sun and compared to the previous record-holder, it is three times closer.

According to NASA, a black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape. Because the substance is compressed into such a small area, the gravity is extremely intense. People cannot perceive black holes because no light can escape from them. They are undetectable. Specialized space telescopes aid in the discovery of black holes. The unique instruments can see how stars that are very near black holes behave differently from other stars.

The companion star, which circles the black hole at roughly the same distance as Earth orbits the Sun, was used to identify it.

Gaia, a satellite operated by the European Space Agency, was used to discover the black hole first, according to Kareem El-Badry of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

The International Gemini Observatory in Hawaii was contacted by El-Badry and his group to corroborate their findings, which were then reported in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Earth's magnetic field is like a silent protector. As we go about living our daily life, the magnetic lines of force stretch and wrap around Earth and form a protective shield that guards us against deadly cosmic radiation and even charged solar particles. Of many things from Earth's bounty nurturing life, its magnetic field is one of the most important one.

The silent protector has now spoken, not in a language that we would understand but in eerie tones that remind us that celestial processes mean business.

We need not worry. It is still the benevolent, protective shield that keeps us safe. But that doesn't reduce the scary quotient of the sound.

In a rare privilege for the public in the Southern Indian city of Chennai, they would be able to listen to a Nobel laureate elaborate on his work and the search for life in the universe. Didier Patrick Queloz, the Swiss astronomer who won the Nobel Prize for discovering an extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star, would be in the city on October 20 as part of a lecture series organised by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M). Didier Queloz was born in Switzerland and studied at the University of Geneva, where he also received a doctorate in 1995. In the same year, Queloz and his supervisor Michel Mayor announced the first discovery of a planet outside our solar system, an exoplanet, orbiting a solar-type star in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Using custom-made instruments, they were able to see planet '51 Pegasi b', in the Pegasus constellation and this work earned them the Nobel Prize in 2019. Since then, over 4,000 exoplanets have since been found in the Milky Way. Eventually, such studies may find an answer to the eternal question of whether other life exists out there. Since 2008, Queloz has been a professor at the University of Geneva and since 2012 at the University of Cambridge as well. The address by Didier Queloz will be the inaugural lecture of the 'Subra Suresh Distinguished Lecture series' launched by IIT Madras. This lecture series was launched in honour of one of its most illustrious alumni of IIT Madras - Professor Subra Suresh, a distinguished alumnus awardee (1997) and currently president and a distinguished university professor at the prestigious Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. This series will feature lectures by Nobel laureates and globally-renowned speakers from various walks of life. In a few hours from now, a sci-fi movie will come to life with NASA's DART spacecraft crashing into a football-field-sized asteroid to veer it off-course. The mission is aimed at testing NASA capability to defend the Earth against deadly asteroids. Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: NASA's DART spacecraft set to crash into an asteroid

A 170-metre (560 feet) wide asteroid named Dimorphos is about to hit the Earth on September 26 at 23.14 GMT (7.14 pm. EDT), NASA scientists have warned.

But, no worries, as the US space agency is planning to alter its course away from the Earth with its $330 million Dart robot spacecraft.

The spacecraft, which weighs around half-tonne, will be travelling at more than four miles (6.4 km) per second to collide with Dimorphos, which will be about 6.8 million miles (10.9 million km) from Earth at the time of impact.

DART, which has been designed to operate fully autonomously, will be unmanned for the mission.

Though the scientists have deemed the asteroid to be of “no threat”, the main aim of launching this mission is to demonstrate its capability in preventing any potential asteroid Armageddon.

They say that observations of the Dart spacecraft’s impact on Dimorphos’s orbit will provide crucial data about how well spacecraft can protect Earth from asteroid attack.

Lindley Johnson, the director of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, said the DART mission does not reflect a change in the policy of the space agency’s thinking about hazardous objects, rather a continuation of the work done so far.

"Our charter from the beginning has been not only to find asteroids, but to work on the technology and techniques that can be used to deflect an asteroid from an impact trajectory, should we ever find one," he told Space.com.

"DART is just a first test in what we see as an ongoing programme.”

The Italian Space Agency satellite called the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids will record the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.

Following this, the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2024 will send its Hera spacecraft on a two-year journey to examine the aftermath of the collision.

"By the time Hera reaches Didymos, in 2026, Dimorphos will have achieved historic significance: the first object in the Solar System to have its orbit shifted by human effort in a measurable way,” the ESA said.

NASA prepares for DART mission launch as asteroid approaches Earth. Here's all you need to know

Jupiter, the gas giant of our Solar System is perhaps the reason why Earth is safe and sound. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System and gobbles up many space rocks that are on the way towards inner Solar System, that is, Earth's neighbourhood.

An opportunity to observe this gentle giant in clearest manner possible is just around the corner. This is because planet Jupiter is going to come closest to Earth in last 70 years.

The closest approach is going to take place on September 26, says NASA.

"Stargazers can expect excellent views of Jupiter the entire night of Monday, Sept. 26 when the giant planet reaches opposition," said NASA in a blog post.

An 'opposition' happens, from Earth's viewpoint, when a celestial object rises in East as the Sun sets in the West. This puts the Sun and the object exactly opposite to each other.

Jupiter's opposition happens every 13 months. At this time the planet appears brighter and larger than usual.

“But that’s not all. Jupiter will also make its closest approach to Earth in the last 70 years!," NASA said.

This time, Jupiter's opposition has coincided with its closest approach to Earth. This is something rare.

Jupiter will be 365 million miles from Earth at the time of its closet approach.

'Earth is now our only shareholder': Patagonia's billionaire owner gives away company to save planet

Jupiter is not just one massive blob of gas in the Solar System. It's much more than that. Jupiter absorbs many space-rocks travelling towards the inner Solar System, the Earth's neighbourhood. This means that Jupiter may have saved us countless times. Dinosaurs got unlucky, it seems.

But now, a new study says that if Jupiter was to tweak its orbit a bit, it would increase habitability on planet Earth.

Jupiter's orbit around the Sun is almost completely circular. This is not true about other planets including Earth. Their orbits are 'eccentric', that is, they are oval-shaped. The degree to which orbit of a planet tends to assume oval shape is called eccentricity.

The eccentricity of Jupiter's orbit is low because it is nearly circular. It is quite logical to imagine that if Jupiter's orbit is tweaked in any manner, the planet with massive gravity will have an effect on orbits of other planets in the Solar System

Researchers from University of California, Riverside have published a study in which they say that if Jupiter's orbit becomes 'eccentric', it may have a positive impact on the habitability on Earth.

“Many are convinced that Earth is the epitome of a habitable planet and that any change in Jupiter’s orbit, being the massive planet it is, could only be bad for Earth,” says Pam Vervoort, lead author of the study

“We show that both assumptions are wrong.”

The study says that the change in Jupiter's orbit would change the eccentricity of orbit of the Earth. This would result in melting of ice to some extent and these regions would be more habitable.

The study has been published in The Astronomical Journal.

Tweak in Jupiter's orbit may help life on Earth: Study

An asteroid is headed towards the earth but according to the official statement released by NASA, there are no reasons to get worried. The asteroid, which has been named Asteroid 2022 RQ, is massive in size but it will be missing earth by quite some distance. According to the latest calculations, the distance between earth and the asteroid will be around 3.7 million kilometres.

NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office has said that the asteroid is 84 feet wide, and it is currently travelling at immense speed through the universe. Asteroid 2022 RQ was first discovered by scientists on September 1 and on Tuesday, it will finally come close to the earth.

When it comes to the course being followed by the asteroid, the farthest point from the sun will be 328 million kilometers and the closest will be 110 million kilometres. The-sky.org also said that the Asteroid 2022 RQ will approximately take 648 days to complete its journey around the sun.

The process used by the researchers to understand the trajectory of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) like this asteroid has developed considerably over the last few years. The NASA system currently boasts of an accuracy percentage of around 90 when it comes to objects which are 140 meters or larger.

The objects are tracked with the help of the NEOWISE Project – an updated version of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer which can effectively find NEOs within a certain distance, according to Live Science. This is also the system that has detected all the latest space activities around the planet.

Huge asteroid headed towards Earth, will come close on Tuesday - Everything you need to know

Scientists have discovered a planet that they think is potentially habitable. The super-earth is located 100 light years away, and is 40% larger than Earth. Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: Scientists discover a 'potentially habitable' planet

A pair of Earth-sized rocky planets that are orbiting a faint red dwarf star in the habitable zone may be the second most Earth-like exoplanet ever found.

The planets are known as LP 890-9b, previously discovered but with little information, and LP 890-9c, also known as SPECULOOS-2c.

Beyond its size and the eight days, it needs to orbit its star, LP 890-9, also known as SPECULOOS 2, very little is known about SPECULOOS-2c. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could provide more information about whether or not the object has an atmosphere and what it contains, according to Amaury Triaud and his colleagues at the University of Birmingham in the UK, who first noticed it.

This may reveal whether or not the planet is capable of supporting life. The absence of extreme heat or cold indicates that the area is in the habitable zone orbiting a star, where liquid water may be present on the surface.

Astronomers can watch for a star's light diminishing as a planet passes in front of it, obstructing our view, to locate planets in distant solar systems. The planets are rather dim, making it difficult to accomplish this when the host star is as luminous as our sun, but it is simpler if the host star is cooler and dimmer, like red dwarfs.

SPECULOOS 2c orbits its star in just 8.4 days and has a radius that is 30 to 40% greater than Earth's. It is also tidally locked, which means that on one side it is always day and on the other, it is always night. Despite these variations, the team believes it to be the second most habitable planet discovered outside of our solar system, behind TRAPPIST-1e and speculates that it still might have liquid water on its surface.

In 2016, Triaud and his associates announced the finding of TRAPPIST-1e, one of at least three potentially hospitable planets the size of Earth that orbit a red dwarf star known as TRAPPIST-1. Four other TRAPPIST planets were discovered in the years that followed, and data collected indicated that at least three of them might be habitable. TRAPPIST 1e seemed to have the best chance of becoming an ocean world like Earth.

According to Beth Biller from the University of Edinburgh in the UK, the finding of these planets, particularly the inner one, and additional observations with JWST may help us grasp what makes a planet livable. However, the planet’s larger-than-Earth size and closer proximity to its host star, which would imply a higher amount of strong radiation, counts against its possible habitability, she says.

Rocky Earth-like exoplanets discovered in habitable zone around dim red dwarf star

Voyager probes are human-made spacecrafts that have gone farthest from the Earth. The spacecrafts have left the Solar System and are still moving ahead into interstellar space. It is quite a thing of wonder that the spacecrafts have been able to maintain contact with the Earth. They are still sending invaulable information.

It was therefore an alarming situation when Attitude Articulation and Control System (AACS) of Voyager-1 started sending garbled data. The AACS keeps the probe's antenna pointed at Earth.

NASA engineers have analysed the probe's data for months and now have been able to fix the problem.

"The team has since located the source of the garbled information: The AACS had started sending the telemetry data through an onboard computer known to have stopped working years ago, and the computer corrupted the information," Nasa has said in an update.

Voyager-1 is so far away from the Earth that a signal from the probe takes 21 hours 45 minutes 45 seconds to reach Earth. And even with best of equipments here on Earth, a signal takes same amount of time to reach Voyager.

It's good news anyway that humanity's herald is back in good shape.

“We’re happy to have the telemetry back. We’ll do a full memory readout of the AACS and look at everything it’s been doing. That will help us try to diagnose the problem that caused the telemetry issue in the first place. So, we’re cautiously optimistic, but we still have more investigation to do,” Suzanne Dodd, Voyager’s project manager, said in a statement.

Harvard Professor Avi Loeb and student Amir Siraj have charted a plan to fish out an interstellar meteorite from the seabed of the Pacific Ocean using a giant magnet. It may sound like a scene straight out of a wild sci-fi movie but the duo, under their $1.6 million Galileo Project are serious about the potential of the project, which they have claimed is cheaper than sending a spacecraft outside the solar system.

Talking about their plan, Siraj stated that they will be using the meteorite's ferrous properties to fetch it out.

"Most meteorites contain enough iron that they will stick to the type of magnet we plan on using for the ocean expedition. Given its extremely high material strength, it is very likely that the fragments of CNEOS 2014-01-08 are ferromagnetic." said Siraj.

According to the project blueprint, the Galileo Project's ship would carry a magnetic sled on a longline winch. The sled will be lunged 1.7 kilometres into the seabed and attempt to sweep the floor and collect even the tiny fragments of the meteorite, measuring as tiny as 0.004 inches.

It is pertinent to note that the object named CNEOS 2014-01-08 paid a visit to Earth in 2014 and crashed into the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Papua New Guinea. What makes the meteorite special is that it is classed as an interstellar object, meaning it came from outside the solar system.

Both Loeb and Siraj came to the conclusion that the object was interstellar by using data to calculate the velocity and trajectory of the object. According to them, the object was travelling at a speed of 60 kilometres per second which is much faster than an object that originates in the solar system.

"At the Earth's distance from the sun, any object travelling faster than about 42 kilometres per second is on an unbounded, hyperbolic escape trajectory relative to the sun. So it [CNEOS 2014-01-08] must have originated from outside of the solar system" said Siraj.

To this date, only three interstellar objects have been observed by humankind. However, it will be the first time that one can lay a hand on one and use it to figure out secrets of our universe.

"Finding such a fragment would represent the first contact humanity has ever had with material larger than dust from beyond the solar system," added Siraj.

Scientists to fish a meteorite from the depths of Pacific Ocean using giant magnets

A new study has found that the Arctic is warming up four times faster than the rest of the Earth. What explains this rapid pace of climate change? How does it affect you? Palki Sharma explains.

Gravitas: The Arctic is warming 4 times faster than rest of Earth

According to a new study, the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than anywhere else on Earth. In some areas of the Arctic Ocean, the warming rate is even up to seven times as fast.

Study: Arctic heating up 4 times faster than rest of Earth

The Earth carries the scars of the enormous advancements in human technology during the last 5,000 years. We have changed the temperature, the biological variety, and the terrain. For the living, we have built skyscrapers, and for the dead, we have built enormous graves. The fact that humans have figured out how to use some of the energy on the globe, but still need more power, is maybe the most significant. The future of human civilisation will continue to be shaped by this unquenchable demand for energy for another 5,000 years. It will therefore determine how Earth will seem in the year 7010 as well.

A civilization's technological development is directly correlated with the amount of energy its citizens can control, according to Nicolai Kardashev's 1964 theory. This Kardashev Scale is used by cosmologists to forecast the technological development of future and extraterrestrial civilizations. Modern humans currently don't even register on the scale. We are now a type 0 civilisation, but we will soon evolve into a type I civilization. Kardashev himself foresaw this transformation taking place. When though?

Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist and futurist, predicted that this transcendence would take place in the next century. Freeman Dyson, a physicist, increases his prediction to fewer than 200 years. Kardashev predicted that it would only take 3,200 years to reach type II level back then.

Humanity will still be able to manage and control atmospheric and geothermal forces even if it only reaches type I status by the year 7010. Although self-destruction and warfare may still be threats to humanity's survival, environmental issues will be a thing of the past.

Humans will have much more technical power in the 71st century if we reach the type II level by then. According to Dyson, such a civilisation would be able to capture a star with a swarm of satellites and use it to collect energy. Along with any advances in genetics and computation, other type II feats that have been postulated involve interplanetary travel and the ability to transfer entire planets.

They will probably be very different from us in terms of culture or even in terms of our brains. They could be posthumans or transhumans, terms used by futurists and philosophers.

Whatever the case, a lot can occur in 5,000 years. We might unintentionally devastate the planet with nanotechnology or obliterate ourselves through conflict. Maybe we won't be able to lessen the danger from asteroid and comet crashes. Before we even reach that level ourselves, we might even come across an alien society of type II.

What will Earth look like in 7010 AD? Will humans still exist after 5,000 years?

Scientists have claimed that days on earth are getting longer but they have not found any concrete reason behind the phenomenon. The observation came as a surprise as June 2022 saw the shortest day in almost half a century. With the Earth’s rotation around its axis speeding up in the past few decades, the days were supposed to get shorter with time. However, the trend seems to have reversed once again and from 2020, steady rise in the length of days was observed by the scientists.

The length of a day has a number of significant implications – ranging from how time is measured to various modern technologies like GPS. As a result, scientists are trying to find the reasons behind this sudden change and how the trend completely changed despite the speed of the planet’s rotation.

According to the study, the main reason behind the slowing down of Earth’s rotation is friction. With the effects of the friction taking place over millions of years, the rotation of the axis has slowed down and as a result, it has added around 2.3 milliseconds to the length of each day every century.

While climate change also had an effect on the rotation, the scientists found that the impact was not that significant, and the tidal changes have increased the length of day by up to a millisecond.

With the study going public, a number of people have been asking for a "negative leap second" in order to balance out the increase but no such request was considered by the authorities.

Earth's days mysteriously getting longer; scientists struggle to find reason

Scientists have launched an undersea expedition to trace and collect the pieces of the first known interstellar object that hit Earth in 2014, reports Science Alert. The said object had crashed into the ocean just off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Examples of Interstellar objects are asteroids, comets, or rogue planets that are not gravitationally bound to a star.

The data at the time revealed that the object was a meteorite. Dubbed CNEOS 2014-01-08, the object is believed to have measured about a half-meter wide, and its potentially interstellar origins were first recognised by then graduate student Amir Siraj and Harvard professor Avi Loeb.

The data they collected at the time indicated that it could be an interstellar object—the first known to hit Earth and the third ever recorded. The other two interstellar objects recorded are Oumuamua and Borisov.

Siraj and Loeb had concluded that CNEOS 2014-01-08 might be from beyond our Solar System due to its unusually high heliocentric velocity, meaning it was moving at speeds that suggest it may not be bound within the Sun's gravity.

However, the problem in 2014 was that the data used to measure the object's impact which would confirm whether it is an interstellar object came from a US Department of Defense spy satellite. As a result, the details of the object were carefully guarded.

Therefore, a paper by Siraj and Loeb has remained unpublished and not peer-reviewed.

But this year in March, US Space Force's Space Operations Command's chief scientist Joel Mozer reviewed the classified data and confirmed that the “velocity estimate reported to NASA is sufficiently accurate to indicate an interstellar trajectory”.

US Space Force lieutenant general John Shaw signed the letter confirming the interstellar object.

However, tracing the remnants of the meteorite is likely to throw up some challenges as it might burned up during its descent into Earth's atmosphere, likely leaving only fragments behind, scattered across the ocean floor.

Hence, the expedition team would be likely carrying a large magnet connected to a trawling ship to pick up the pieces.

In an interview for Universe Today last year, Loeb said that the expedition would give the scientific community the chance “to actually put our hands on the relic and figure out whether it’s natural, whether it’s a rock, or whether, you know, a small fraction of those [interstellar objects] might be artificial.”
