Asteroids frequently pass by Earth. But what will happen if an asteroid were to collide with the Earth? To emphasise the need for planetary defence. Scientists have devised an exercise in which a hypothetical asteroid 2023 PDC strikes Earth. This scenario illustrates how an asteroid threat might evolve over the years. It will also help calculate the potential devastation it could cause.

This is how scientists would react if an asteroid was to hit Earth

March continued the planet's exceedingly warm start to 2023, ranking as the fifth warmest march in 143 years. @saroyahem brings you the report.

Earth had second-warmest March on record: Report

Astronomers have discovered repeating radio signals from an Earth-like exoplanet as well as from the star that it is orbiting situated at a distance of 12 light-years from Earth, which they believe hints at the existence of life on the exoplanet.

As per the astronomers, the radio signals suggest that the Earth-sized exoplanet may have an atmosphere and a magnetic field.

Along with pointing needles of the compass in the north direction, the magnetic field of the Earth deflects high energy plasma and particles, regularly blasted out of the sun, and helps preserve its atmosphere and sustain life on the Earth.

Hence, the astronomers indicated that the possibility of the existence of a magnetic field on the Earth-like exoplanet, called YZ Ceti b, probably hints at the habitability of life on that planet.

Astronomers Jackie Villadsen and Sebastian Pineda from Bucknell University (US) and University of Colorado (US), respectively, detected a repetitive radio signal emanating from star YZ Ceti with the use of Karl GJansky Very Large Array, which is a radio telescope operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory of US National Science Foundation, PTI reported.

The findings of astronomers have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy. "Whether a planet survives with an atmosphere or not can depend on whether the planet has a strong magnetic field or not," Pineda explained.

The radio signal was first isolated by Villadsen while she poured over data at her home on a weekend. "We saw the initial burst and it looked beautiful," Pineda said.

"When we saw it again, it was very indicative that, OK, maybe we really have something here,” he added. The interactions between the planet’s magnetic field and the star it orbits have led to the rise of the stellar radio waves detected by astronomers, they detected.

Giant 150-foot asteroid to will pass by Earth on April 6, NASA issues warning

Though it is beyond our normal perception of time, Earth took millions and millions of years to develop life. It went through hardships before becoming the globe-spanning phenomenon it is now. One such phase came during the Cryogenian period that lasted from 720 million to 635 million years ago. During this time, Earth was a frozen sphere which may have looked like a shimmering snowball from space. Frozen conditions create difficulties in the development of a thriving life but life found a way nonetheless.

A new study has thrown light on how life was able to survive in spite of difficult conditions.

This period is also called "Snowball Earth"

Scientists found fossilised seaweed that was unearthed in black shale in China's Hubei province. Based on their observations scientists think that habitable marine environments were more widespread on "Snowball Earth" than previously thought.

The findings support the idea that it was more of a "Slushball Earth" where the earliest forms of complex life - basic multicellular organisms - endured even at mid-latitudes previously thought to have been frozen solid.

The fossils date from the second of the two times during the Cryogenian Period when massive ice sheets stretched from the poles toward the equator. This interval, called the Marinoan Ice Age, lasted from about 651 million to 635 million years ago.

"The key finding of this study is that open-water - ice-free - conditions existed in mid-latitude oceanic regions during the waning stage of the Marinoan Ice Age," said China University of Geosciences geobiologist Huyue Song, lead author of the research published in the journal Nature Communications.

"Our study shows that, at least near the end of the Marinoan 'Snowball Earth' event, habitable areas extended to mid-latitude oceans, much larger than previously thought. Previous research argued that such habitable areas, at best, only existed in tropical oceans. More extensive areas of habitable oceans better explain where and how complex organisms such as multicellular seaweed survived," Song added.

The findings demonstrate that the world's oceans were not completely frozen and that habitable refuges existed where multicellular eukaryotic organisms - the domain of life including plants, animals, fungi and certain mostly single-celled organisms called protists - could survive, Song said.

NASA issues warning over giant 150-foot asteroid that will pass by Earth on April 6

A massive black hole has been spotted by space agency NASA on the Sun, which is 20 times bigger than the Earth and can blast powerful solar storms towards the planet, as per reports.

The region named "coronal hole" looks like the empty space on the Sun's surface. After spotting the hole, an alert was issued by US federal agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for geomagnetic storms.

The “coronal hole” is not exactly a hole but a wide region which is comparatively cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface and hence, is appearing black.

“Coronal holes are magnetically open areas that are one source of high-speed solar wind. They appear dark when viewed in many wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. At times, the solar wind can generate aurora at higher latitudes on Earth,” NASA explained.

According to a report published by news.com.au, solar winds of 2.9 million kmph are being unleashed by the gaping hole towards Earth, which may hit our planet on Friday (March 31).

Scientists are monitoring the situation to asses how these solar winds will impact our planet, the report said. Charged particles, which continuously flow from the Sun, impact the satellites, GPS, magnetic field and mobile phones on the Earth.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) discovered the coronal hole on March 23 near the Sun's South Pole. "The current coronal hole, the big one right now, is about 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres across. That is about 20-30 Earths lined up back-to-back," said Alex Young, who works at NASA Goddard's Heliophysics Science Division, while speaking to Business Insider.

University College London's Associate Professor of Space and Climate Physics Daniel Verscharen said that Earth may be hit by a geomagnetic storm which is coming towards the planet at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour.

“The shape of this coronal hole is not particularly special. However, its location makes it very interesting. I would expect some fast wind from that coronal hole to come to Earth around Friday night into Saturday morning of this week," he stated.

Meanwhile, Mathew Owens, professor of Space Physics at the University of Reading, said that these kinds of holes appear when Sun is reaching its peak of activity which occurs in a span of 11 years.

“This one being at the equator means we’re pretty much guaranteed to see some fast wind at Earth a couple of days after it rotates past the central meridian. I doubt it will result in too much excitement. Unless we just so happen to get an Earth-directed CME around the same time,” he said.

A supermassive blackhole has changed its direction and is now facing Earth, scientists at the Royal Astronomical Society discovered, after they reclassified a galaxy that is 657 million light-years away from the blue planet.

According to scientists, this galaxy— called PBC J2333.9-2343— has a blazar (active galactic nucleus) in its core with a relativistic jet (which is also known as a super-massive black hole).

Blazars are very high energy objects and are considered to be one of the most powerful phenomena in the universe.

Researchers have said that the galaxy now stretches nearly 4 million light-years across — nearly 40 times the size of the Milky Way.

Their research published on March 21 has revealed that the galaxy—which was earlier classified as a radio galaxy—drastically turned its direction by up to 90 degrees, and is now directly pointing towards Earth.

“We started to study this galaxy as it showed peculiar properties,” spokesperson, Dr Lorena Hernández-García said.

"Our hypothesis was that the relativistic jet of its supermassive black hole had changed its direction, and to confirm that idea we had to carry out a lot of observations.”

“The fact that we see the nucleus is not feeding the lobes anymore means that they are very old. They are the relics of past activity, whereas the structures located closer to the nucleus represent younger and active jets.”

An asteroid, which was huge enough to destroy a city, silently made its way from between the orbits of the Earth and the Moon, missing both the planet and its satellite.

The scientists discovered the space rock, named 2023 DZ2, a month ago.

As predicted by astronomers, the asteroid flew past the Earth from a distance of 175,000km on Saturday after passing across the Moon.

This is one rare occasion when such a massive asteroid – which has been estimated to be between 40 and 90 m in diameter – passes from such a close distance to the planet.

As per NASA, the event became an important opportunity for scientists and astronomers to expand their knowledge of asteroids, at a time when another space rock was discovered which was carrying the potential to hit Earth.

"There is no chance of this 'city killer' striking Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations," European Space Agency's planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said.

Moissl added that, according to the preliminary data, 2023 DZ2 was "a scientifically interesting object". However, he added that they needed more data to determine the composition of the asteroid.

Since the asteroid passed so close to the Earth, it was visible through small telescopes and binoculars across the globe.

The Virtual Telescope Project provided a live web broadcast of the asteroid's approach.

The space rock is likely to return towards the orbit of Earth in 2026, however, scientists have ruled out any threat to Earth even during its return.

Earlier an asteroid of similar size named, 2023 DW, was predicted to have a one-in-432 chance of crashing on Earth's surface on Valentine's Day 2046.

'City killer' asteroid comes closer than Moon, Earth remains unharmed

An asteroid with around 200-feet diameter, said to be big enough to wipe out an entire city, will pass through Earth and the Moon’s orbit on March 25 while missing both, NASA has said.

The asteroid will pose no problems to both celestial bodies, but it will offer a chance for astronomers to study a space rock from just over 168,000 kilometres (100,000 miles) away.

While asteroids flying by Earth are common, NASA said that the one approaching the planet is so big that it is rare for a space rock of such size to come so close. They said that such a phenomenon happens only once a decade.

Asteroid big enough to wipe out a city will pass through Earth’s orbit on this day

A crucial UN report has warned that the world will see its first full year with temperatures rising by 1.5 degree Celcius above pre-industrial levels in early 2030s. Severe impacts on climate will be seen more quickly at lower levels of global warming than previously expected, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said.

IPCC released the final part of its mammoth sixth assessment report on Monday. The IPCC consists of the world's leading climate scientists, who have issued a "final warning" on the deteriorating climate crisis. The IPCC, an intergovernmental body of the UN charged with advancing scientific knowledge about man-made climate change, has prepared detailed assessment reports about climate change amid a continuous rise in greenhouse gas emissions which have started to cause visible and irrevocable damage to the planet earth.

The report talks about causes, potential impacts and response options to tackle global warming and noted that only swift and drastic action can avert the situation.

IPCC said there is also a 50-50 chance that "by 2030, global surface temperature in any individual year could exceed 1.5C" in the a report synthesising its major findings over the last six years.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: "This report is a clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts by every country and every sector and on every timeframe. Our world needs climate action on all fronts: everything, everywhere, all at once."

A call to the wealthy countries

Guterres also called on wealthy countries to move up their goals of achieving carbon neutrality as close as possible to 2040, mostly from 2050 now, in order to "defuse the climate time bomb." The UN chief said that "humanity is on thin ice -- and that ice is melting fast".

Guterres described the sixth "synthesis report" from IPCC as "a survival guide for humanity".

In a video message coinciding with the latest report on climate change, Guterres said all parties must "hit the fast forward button" on net zero deadlines. He also urged emerging economies to reach the goal as close as possible to 2050.

He said rich countries should commit to achieving carbon neutrality as close as possible to 2040 and "aim to respect" the limit.

The UN report said the last eight years' record-breaking temperatures will figure among the coolest within three or four decades as global temperatures climb, even if planet-warming emissions drop quickly.

Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London and lead author of the UN's climate advisory panel said: "The warmest years we have experienced to date will be among the coolest within a generation."

Guterres said: "This is the moment for all G20 members to come together in a joint effort, pooling their resources and scientific capacities as well as their proven and affordable technologies through the public and private sectors to make carbon neutrality a reality by 2050."

'Final warning' over devastating climate impacts: UN report calls for urgent action

In what comes as a first, a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus-Rex skeleton will be auctioned in Switzerland next month (April 18). In what comes as a first, a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus-Rex skeleton will be auctioned in Switzerland next month (April 18). This will be the first time that a T-Rex will go under the hammer in Europe and only the third time worldwide that an entire 'skeleton' of exceptional quality was on offer. According to the auction house, the skeleton, named 'Trinity' stands tall at 3.9 metres and is currently valued between $6.5-$8.7 million (Eight million Swiss francs). Experts, however, believe that the figure is rather conservative and that it may go up as the auction date approaches. The sale becomes all the more important as only 32 skeletons of adult T-Rex's - one of the largest apex predators to have ever walked the face of the Earth - had been discovered worldwide. Read more: This 'shark-toothed' dinosaur gave tough competition to T-Rex Trinity has been composed using the bone material of three T-Rex specimens. They were excavated between 2008-2013 in the US states of Montana and Wyoming. The Hell Creek and Lance Creek formations in the respective states are well-known for the discoveries of two other T-Rex skeletons to have gone under the hammer. By law, such specimens can only be sold if the fossil was discovered on private land, which in this case it was. The auctioneers stated that Trinity was provided by a private individual and had been flown to Switzerland in nine large crates to be assembled. "The Zurich auction is therefore an exceptional opportunity to acquire such a fossil of the highest quality," said the auction house. T-Rex is one of the most fascinating reptiles of yore. Its huge size, scary teeth and sharp claws make it unique and collector's favourite. Notably, in 2020, a T-Rex skeleton nicknamed 'Stan' was sold for a whopping $31.8 million in New York. It then shredded the previous record set by a specimen called Sue that was sold for $8.4 million in October 1997 by Sotheby's to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. In about 23 years an asteroid over 150 feet in diameter has a chance of hitting earth on Valentine's day in 2046. However, scientists say there is a slim chance of the asteroid hitting the earth.

NASA warns asteroid may collide with earth on Valentine's day in 2046

An asteroid, which is estimated to be as big as an Olympic swimming pool, may crash into Earth on Valentine’s Day in 2046, NASA scientists have predicted. There is one in 625 chance that the asteroid, which has been named 2023 DW, may hit the Earth on February 14, 2046, the European Space Agency stated.

The asteroid, which has a 50-metre diameter, has been placed by NASA at the number one spot on the “Risk List” of the objects present in space that have more than zero probability of impacting the Earth.

2023 DW stands as the only asteroid present on the list which has a score of 1 on the Torino scale, which is used to measure the chances of the space object impacting the Earth. All other objects have 0 ratings.

Level 1 is indicative of the fact that the chances of an asteroid colliding with the earth are “extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern,” the Centre for Near Earth Object Studies stated.

“New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0,” it added.

Doomsday in 2046? Asteroid as huge as an olympic swimming pool may hit Earth, says NASA

Our Solar System’s architecture is quite a bit different than what astronomers see around other stars. Like, Super-Earths are quite common in other star systems, but what if one appears in our solar system?

A Super-Earth will toss us into the Sun or leave us lost in interstellar space?

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - An asteroid, which is estimated to be as big as an Olympic swimming pool, may crash into Earth on Valentine’s Day in 2046, NASA scientists have predicted.

Trending on WION: Asteroid as big as an Olympic pool may hit Earth in 2046

Sun has formed planets in the solar system. Every ounce of material on Earth, including ourselves, are formed from the material that was once spinning aimlessly around it when the Sun was forming.

Given all this, it's natural for us to consider the Sun to be the starting point of everything as far as we are concerned. It is therefore intriguing to consider opinion of some scientists that some of the water on Earth may be older than the Sun.

The research team is from European South Observatory (ESO). The team made use of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to observe a planet forming disc around the star named V883 Orionis.

A star begins to form when large amount of dust and gas suddenly begins to collapse and forms a protostar. As the star formation progresses, the material around the protostar begins to revolve around it and over the course of millions of years, may form planets, asteroids and even comets which become part of the star system.

There are large amount of water molecules in this material in the planet-forming disc around the star.

The research team measured the chemical signature of the water content in this disc. This chemical signature gives us the idea where and when the water was formed.

For example, a chemical signature of the water found in a comet is similar to that on Earth, it may be said that comets could have delivered water to our planet.

“V883 Orionis is the missing link in this case. The composition of the water in the disc is very similar to that of comets in our own Solar System. This is confirmation of the idea that the water in planetary systems formed billions of years ago, before the Sun, in interstellar space, and has been inherited by both comets and Earth, relatively unchanged,” said John J. Tobin, an astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, USA and lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.

Water on Earth may be older than the Sun itself: Study

Scientists say the Earth has a hidden layer, and it is called the innermost inner core. How is this layer different from the other four? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: The Earth has a hidden layer. Here's what it's called

Scientists have found that Moon is slowly drifting away from Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm per year.

Experts at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) made the discovery thanks to Apollo-mission era reflective panels that were installed on the Moon in 1969. It allowed them to measure the distance between the panels and the Earth, according to reports.

Notably, this behaviour has already been predicted, but at the rate which it has been happening has left scientists startled.

According to experts, about 2.46 billion years ago, Moon was about 60,000 kilometres closer to Earth than it is now. This means that there was a time when Earth used to receive sunlight for about 17 hours a day.

Why has the Earth's spinning inner core slowed down compared to the surface?

However, there is a scientific explanation to this phenomenon. It’s called “Milankovitch cycles".

According to NASA, "Milankovic cycles" are small changes that occur in the Earth's orbit around the Sun, changing the amount of sunlight the planet receives.

This in turn influences the kind of climate Earth has and can dictate periods of wet or dry weather.

Milankovitch cycles have previously been responsible for a period of greening in the Sahara desert and their forces have been known to impact the size of lakes on Earth. These cycles also determine the distance between the Moon and the Earth.

Though the effect of these cycles needs to be carefully studied, one of the notable effects it could have on Earth would be tidal changes.

As the Moon moves further away from Earth, the strength of this pull decreases, causing significant impact on shipping and fishing which rely on tidal patterns.

A photo of SpaceX's lift button was shared by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Twitter which symbolised ‘Space Elevator’, a thing of fiction which has fascinated humans for years.

However, the concept of the space elevator which can transport things from earth to space has not materialised in reality. Representing this imagined concept, the elevator buttons have been designed in Elon Musk's SpaceX which will be used by the crew members to board spaceships.

Theory of space elevators

The concept of creating space elevators is based on the idea of making access to space possible on a daily basis where the origin point is Earth and the destination is space. Space elevators, if built in future, can allow the transfer of people and objects from the surface of the Earth to space without the need for rockets.

As per various calculations, the space elevators once created can reduce space travel costs by hundred dollars per kilogramme of payload, which is comparatively very less compared to the rockets that run on chemical fuel.

Musk's take on space elevators

Elon Musk, who wishes to ‘colonise Mars’ one day, believes that space elevators cannot exist in reality. In an interview, Musk had said that it is comparatively easier to build a bridge between Tokyo and Los Angeles than to create an elevator to orbit. However, Musk hopes that his assessment can be proved wrong someday.

Scientists with NASA announced they have discovered an Earth-sized planet that is likely rocky and could be habitable. The planet, named TOI 700 e, is slightly smaller than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star called TOI 700 about 102 light-years away.

The Earth's inner core appears to have recently slowed its rotation. The heart of the planet now rotates at a slightly more sluggish rate than the layers above.

Why has the Earth's spinning inner core slowed down compared to the surface?

It is often a crazy fact to wrap one's head around that we live on a planet with a solid upper layer, beneath which is a molten-liquid core, reaching thousands of degrees in temperature.

It is often a crazy fact to wrap one's head around that we live on a planet with a solid upper layer, beneath which is a molten-liquid core, reaching thousands of degrees in temperature. However, what lies at the very centre of Earth's solid, metallic core is a mystery that has puzzled scientists over the years. According to new research published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday, it has been posited that our planet has a distinct ball of iron within its metallic core. The study states that the newly-detected centre is a 644-kilometre-wide ball of metal with the composition of iron-nickel alloy. The fact that this ball had not been detected previously could be attributed to the simple fact that its outer layer is also composed of a similar iron-nickel alloy with trace amounts of other elements. WATCH | Most of the Earth's water is underground? × With the Earth's core impossibly hot, it is difficult to reach anywhere near it. Thus, scientists use seismology to gauge what lies in the innards of our home planet. After any earthquake seismic waves travel across the Earth, changing their path and orientation when passing through different materials. This allows the geophysicists to decipher what lies at Earth's rather mysterious core. The scientists involved in the study used a similar process to ascertain their findings. “In this study, for the first time, we report observations of seismic waves originating from powerful earthquakes traveling back and forth from one side of the globe to the other up to five times like a ricochet,” said Dr Thanh-Son Phạm, one of the coauthors of the study. “Additionally, the transition from the innermost (solid) ball to the outer shell of the inner core (also solid shell) seems rather gradational than sharp, That is why we cannot observe it via direct reflections of seismic waves from it.” Read more: Earth's inner core might have stopped and changed direction: Check out what happens now! The discovery of an inner layer is expected to widen the horizon of scientists and their understanding of Earth's magnetic field and how it has evolved over centuries and will continue to do so in the coming future. We scour the inky void for signs of life as well as for signs of planets that can potentially harbour life. Scientists have now found another almost Earth-like exoplanet that has the potential of harbouring life. Why? Because the planet lies in what is called 'habitable zone' around its star.

In our Solar System, Earth lies perfectly in the habitable zone.

Around any star, a habitable zone refers to a distance from the star at which water is able to exist in liquid form. In other words, things are neither too hot nor too cold in the habitable zone.
