The centre of gravity of global economy has moved more towards East Asia during coronavirus pandemic, said Ian Goldin, former Vice President of the World Bank.

Goldin, who is now at the University of Oxford, was speaking at WION Global Summit in Dubai at the session titled World Economy: The Price of the Pandemic, moderated by journalist Ali Aslan.

Aslan pointed out that China was the only major economy to grow in spite of being the one where coronavirus originated.

Goldin said that the Chinese leadership had done a "remarkable" job in containing the virus. China was the "economic engine of growth", he said, while underlining that China's role in the unfolding situation now was similar to the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis.

Economic centre of gravity has moved to East Asia, former VP of World Bank tells WION Global Summit

India's visible leadership, rapid capability response, effective supplies to the needy and strong social discipline have all stood out during the COVID-19 pandemic, external affairs minister S Jaishankar told the WION Global Summit in Dubai on Wednesday.

Alluding to the theme of the Global Summit, "Power Play in a Post-Pandemic World", he said power plays have always existed and will continue, but in a changed playing field. “Capabilities may be different, perhaps reputations as well. But the mother of all Black Swans will ensure that our very manner of thinking will be different,” he said, referring to the pandemic. #WIONGlobalSummit | India's visible leadership, rapid capability response, effective supplies to the needy and strong social discipline have all stood out during the COVID-19 pandemic, says @DrSJaishankar Follow LIVE updates here: https://t.co/YrCq0S02ze pic.twitter.com/YdxiwrRgP8 — WION (@WIONews) March 24, 2021 × "In an incredible and dynamic global situation, the pandemic has introduced many more variables, some of which came as a shock to the entire global system," he said. "The pandemic has raised fundamental concerns about the virtues of globalisation by bringing out the importance of reliable supply chains." “It has also brought out in the open the behaviour of states at times of stress, thereby highlighting the more uncomfortable realities of global politics," India's external affairs minister asserted. "It made us realise the quality of leadership and the strength of motivation. It has made health security and perhaps food security far more integral to national security of countries,” he said. The pandemic, he said, has accelerated digitisation, whether it is by work from home, delivery to the vulnerable, or monitoring the pandemic itself. “The full extent of these changes is still far from clear. But for sure, the world will be a different place than just wearing masks,” said Jaishankar. Outlining power plays that existed well beyond the pandemic, and could be a continuous factor in the evolution of the world order, he noted that multipolarity and rebalancing are the main characteristics of the current world order. “The first represents the emergence of more consequential players, as opposed to two major ones during the Cold War, one after that, and a few more thereafter in the making.” The second, rebalancing, not only captures the different weightage of players, but also the changes in our assessment of their importance and influence. “The process is set against backdrop of globalisation and debates around its merits,” he said. When it comes to power plays, the rise of China and to some extent of India is one part of the story, Jaishankar said. “Significant changes in American strategic posture are equally important, and not unconnected. The collective character of the West, including its alliance manifestations, is no longer the same. Historical players like Russia or Turkey or Iran are far more active in their near vicinity, in the case of Russia, well beyond.” He noted that the influence of middle powers has grown much more in a flatter world, making challenges and solutions far more regional than before, for example, in the Gulf. Africa and Latin America are more aware of their interests and more focused on pursuing them, he added. Globalisation has also come with its own constraints and dependence. The resulting anxieties have had both political and cultural expression, the minister said. “The game-changing nature of technology has had sweeping consequences, among them the growth and power of Big Tech. New metrics of power have emerged, such as connectivity,'' he pointed out. Complimenting WION for the summit, Jaishankar expressed confidence “that we will benefit from its exceptional coverage of global happenings.”

Dubai's house prices are expected to fall at a slower pace this year and next than previously thought as hopes for a successful vaccine rollout and an economic recovery boost confidence in the sector, a Reuters poll showed.

England`s Paul Casey claimed his 15th European Tour title after a closing round of two-under-par 70 handed him a dominant four-shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.

Casey has previously lifted trophies in the United Arab Emirates with victories in Abu Dhabi in 2007 and 2009 and he made it a hat-trick in the desert at the Emirates Golf Club with a score of 17-under, four clear of South Africa`s Brandon Stone.

The 43-year-old also boosted his chances to make a fifth Ryder Cup appearance in September, with the Dubai triumph tying him with 2018 European captain Thomas Bjorn and current skipper Padraig Harrington for Tour wins.

"It`s very, very special," said Casey, whose latest Tour triumph comes 20 years after his first. "It`s an unbelievable roster (of winners). That`s so cool, I`ve worked so hard.

"I feel like I`ve regained my youth, I mean that sincerely."

Starting with a one-shot advantage, Casey struck two birdies and two bogeys for a level-par 35 on the front nine to extend his lead to three strokes, with Stone bogeying three of his opening seven holes.

Stone recovered with three quickfire birdies on the back nine but Casey never looked in danger as he cruised to victory that will move him back into the top 20 when the world rankings are updated on Monday.

A 15th European Tour title triumph also takes Casey past the tally of three-times Race to Dubai champion Rory McIlroy and makes it 350 tournament wins for English players.

Scot Robert MacIntyre finished third at 12-under after carding four consecutive bogeys in a round of 74, while England`s Laurie Canter and Finland`s Kalle Samooja were tied for fourth a further two strokes behind.

Casey cruises to victory in Dubai for 15th European Tour crown

England`s Paul Casey carded an eight-under-par 64 in the third round of the Dubai Desert Classic on Saturday and tied the lowest round of the week to go 15-under overall and take a one-shot lead heading into the final round.

Casey recorded six birdies and capped off his day with an eagle on the par-five 18th in an error-free round to jump up five places to lead Scotland`s Robert MacIntyre. South African Brandon Stone is third, a shot further behind.

"To finish off with an eagle was pretty cool," Casey said. "You can never say (the round was) flawless... It was very controlled, challenging at the same time with a little bit of wind here and there.

"The strong asset I have in this game is the way I drive it, the length. The game has gone more and more towards length and I`m fortunate that I`m still able to lean on that strength and compete out here."

Casey is chasing his 15th European Tour title and though he has won at Abu Dhabi twice, the 43-year-old has never won in Dubai.

"I`ve won just down the road but never in Dubai," he added. "I can see the very impressive list of winners, there`s photos of them behind the 18th green. Iconic trophy, iconic event... But there`s a long way to go."

Laurie Canter and 2017 champion Sergio Garcia are tied for fourth, five shots behind Casey, while Finn Kalle Samooja is sixth at nine under after a 71.

Overnight leader Thomas Detry, who carded two bogey-free rounds, recorded two bogeys and two double bogeys to finish with 74, dropping the Belgian down to seventh alongside Justin Rose and Justin Harding.

A new Hindu temple is being constructed in Dubai with an Arabian look and will be ready by Diwali next year.

The temple is being planned adjacent to the famous Guru Nanak Darbar in Jebel Ali and will be considered an extension of the Sindhi Guru Darbar Temple in Souq Baniyas, Bur Dubai — which is one of the oldest Hindu temples in the UAE.

Construction of this new temple in Jebel Ali will make the locality a multi-religious corridor in the city.

"Once complete, there will be several churches, the Sikh Guru Nanak Darbar, and a Hindu temple in the same location," Raju Shroff, a trustee of the Sindhi Guru Darbar Temple told local media.

This temple is being constructed at an area of 25,000 sq. ft. and will cost around Dirham 75 million (Rs 1,48,86,24,396). The foundation stone-laying ceremony took place in February last year and the basement of the temple has already been constructed.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Mahmood Qureshi arrives in Dubai for two-day visit

The Golan Heights Winery, which grows its grapes on the plateau that Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war, will display its bottles on shelves in Dubai this week, the Israeli company said.

The sale of Golan wine in Dubai, and soon after elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates, follows a normalisation in relations reached between the UAE and Israel last month.

The UAE foreign and economy ministries did not respond to requests for comment on the wine deal. The Gulf state has described the Golan as Syrian territory, and along with the international community did not recognise Israel’s annexation of the area in 1981.

Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, which Israel captured in a 1967 war. The UAE said at the time the U.S. move “disrupts all efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East”.

The Golan Heights wine brands - Yarden, Gamla and Mount Hermon - will be sold through African + Eastern (A&E), one of the largest importers of alcohol in the Gulf, Golan Heights Winery said in a statement.

The wines will be available in hotels, restaurants and retail alcohol stores. In the UAE only non-Muslims are legally allowed to drink.

Kosher wine from South Africa is already sold in the UAE but this will be the first Israeli-made wine in the Gulf state.

The Golan winery is targeting the wave of Israeli and Jewish tourists expected to visit the UAE as well as other tourists and locals who are allowed to consume alcohol.

“This is an historic launch and we expect a successful and long-term collaboration with the Golan Heights Winery,” A&E CEO Jason Dixon said in the statement.

Golan Heights Winery CEO Yair Shapira said the UAE was a market “with interesting and unique potential”. He said his firm would “open the gate” and introduce UAE residents and guests to the Israeli wine industry.

Dubai is all set to introduce the feature of facial recognition system on public transport to assure more security for the locals, the officials announced on Sunday.

"This technology has proven its effectiveness to identify suspicious and wanted people," said Obaid al-Hathboor, director of Dubai's Transport Security Department.

The technology is being brought in a little before the country gears up to host the global Expo exhibition.

Facial recognition has been in user at the Dubai international airport for the last few months as a part of the process of becoming a "smart city" in the Middle East.

Dubai hopes to become one of the leading countries and be a hub for technology and artificial intelligence.

"We aspire to raise our performance by building on our current capabilities, to ensure a high level of security in metro stations and other transport sectors," said Hathboor.

A special police unit has been trained in the United States. The officers conducted a mock attack before working in tandem with a control centre to apprehend the suspects. They also helped the commuters 'evacuate' during this mock attack. These officers will now be deployed at major metro stations during Expo 2020.

This event has been delayed by one year due to the coronavirus pandemic and will now be launching in October 2021. The event was, originally, expected to attract 15 million visitors.

Jamal Rashed, of Dubai Police's Transport Security Department, said the facial recognition technology will be rolled out in the coming months in all metro stations. "It took at least five hours to identify a suspect before," said Rashed. "With this technology, it takes less than a minute.

With multicoloured lights and jets of water blasting into the night sky, the United Arab Emirate's newest attraction set a world record on Thursday as the largest fountain ever.

Located at The Pointe in Dubai's waterfront Palm Jumeirah area, the glitzy Palm Fountain was unveiled in a launch that was live-streamed around the world.

The fountain spans over 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters) of seawater, according to Gail Sangster, asset director at Nakheel Malls, the developers behind the fountain. She said it features 128 super shooters reaching up to 105 metres (344 feet) in height.

The Palm Fountain has been crowned the Guinness World Record holder for the world's largest fountain, stealing the title from the Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain in South Korea.

"GWR is delighted to officially see The Palm Fountain breaking the title of the Largest fountain," Shaddy Gaad, Senior Marketing Manager at Guinness World Records said in a statement.

"This fountain is an example of another milestone in Dubai's architectural achievements," it said, adding that Guinness was declaring it "Officially Amazing".

Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, already holds a string of world record titles -- including the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, and the fastest police car in service, a Bugatti Veyron.

The city that attracts millions of tourists had already one of the largest fountains in the world near Burj Khalifa.

The new fountain has over 3,000 LED lights, 7,500 nozzles and can shoot water up to 105 metres, according to Guinness.

Last month, British artist Sacha Jafri broke the record for the largest art canvas measuring 1,595 square metres, also in Dubai, Guinness said.

The 44-year-old contemporary artist has said he hoped to raise at least $30 million to fund health and education initiatives for children in impoverished parts of the world.

Dubai, which has the most diversified economy in the oil-rich Gulf region, has been badly hit by the coronavirus slowdown.

Its GDP has contracted 3.5 per cent in the first quarter, following two years of modest growth.

Tourism has long been a mainstay of the emirate, which welcomed more than 16 million visitors last year.

Before the pandemic crippled global travel, the aim was to reach 20 million this year.

Dubai is now largely open for business and tourism, but infection rates have been rising in recent weeks.
