The plan also includes more ambitious goals than the proposal he released months ago when he ran as one of the more moderate Democrats in the party's nomination race.

By embracing some ideas of his progressive ex-rivals, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Biden appears intent on winning over progressive voters who might be wary of the former vice president's more centrist positions.

He reiterated that he would rejoin the Paris climate agreement that Trump quit in 2017, fund the construction of 1.5 million new energy efficient homes, upgrade appliance standards and prioritize renewable energy.

"We're not just going to tinker around the edges," Biden said.

"I know meeting the challenge will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to jolt new life into our economy."

Biden said he would reverse some 100 steps by Trump to roll back environmental regulations.&nbsp;

He also recalled parts of his earlier climate proposal that would put the nation on the road to net zero emissions economy-wide no later than 2050.

The public school districts for Los Angeles and San Diego, which instruct a combined 706,000 students and employ 88,000 people, said in a joint statement they would teach only online when school resumes in August, citing "vague and contradictory" science and government guidelines.

The districts said countries that have safely reopened schools have done so only after establishing declining infection rates and on-demand coronavirus testing.

"California has neither," the statement said, adding, "The sky-rocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control."

The union representing Los Angeles teachers applauded the strategy in a separate statement released shortly after the school shutdowns were announced.

"In the face of the alarming spike in COVID cases, the lack of necessary funding from the government to open schools safely and the outsized threat of death faced by working-class communities of color, there really is no other choice that doesn't put thousands of lives at risk,” United Teachers Los Angeles said.

Brenda Del Hierro, who has two children in Los Angeles schools, said resuming traditional instruction was important but the hazards had to be considered. "For their social and emotional wellbeing they need to go back to school. But at the end of the day there is too much of a risk," she said.

The decision to cancel in-person classes puts the districts at odds with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said he might withhold federal funding or remove tax-exempt status from school systems that refuse to reopen. Most education funding comes from state and local governments.

Administration officials have said data do not suggest attending school would be dangerous for children because their infection rates are far lower than the population at large.

In response to the California districts' announcement, the White House reiterated that the ideal scenario is for students to go to school. "Hopefully Los Angeles and San Diego can get there soon as well, as that is what is best for children.” spokesman Judd Deer said.

The July 9 claims were made in an interview with a Fox News host - Sean Hannity, whereby he claimed to have “tremendous support” among the African American community. On the same day, he claimed that former US President Barack Obama and the 2020 Democrat hopeful Joe Biden spied on Trump and his campaign in 2016. He, however, offered no evidence.

The Washington Post had curated its database during Trump’s first 100 days in office, as part of which they combed through Trump’s every word, be it at media briefings or at election rallies. They also took into account his Twitter page, where he spends a lot of time talking about himself.

492 lies in the first 100 days

Just in the first 100 days since the newspaper had begun tracking Trump’s lies, over 492 misleading or false claims were made. “The tsunami of untruths just keeps looming larger and larger”, they claimed.

In fact, the team of fact-checkers never thought Donald Trump would hit the 20,000 lie milestone during his current term.

“The notion that Trump would exceed 20,000 claims before he finished his term appeared ludicrous when the Fact Checker started this project,” said Glenn Kessler, editor and chief writer.

Trump has made at least 23 false claims every day in the last 14 months. It all began with the Mueller report, the failed impeachment trial against him, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, followed by the murder of George Floyd, which triggered protests not only in the country, but around the world.

Just pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US president has lied 1,200 times. Most of these surrounded his claims of testing rates in the country. Even though the US had undertaken rigorous testing intermittently, medical experts have repeatedly warned how it fell short taking into account the severity of the outbreak in the country.

Trump confirms US conducted cyberattack against Russia in 2018

US President Donald Trump is working on an executive order to establish a merit-based immigration system, the White House has said.

"I'm going to do a big executive order. I have the power to do it as president and I'm going to make DACA a part of it," Trump said in an interview with Telemundo Noticias.

DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

It began in 2012 under then-president Barack Obama and has allowed some 700,000 people brought without papers to the United States as children to live, work and study without danger of being deported. Most of them are Latin American.

In 2017, Trump tried to cancel the programme but the Supreme Court ruled last week that the administration had acted with weak legal justification and it let DACA stand for now.

The ruling suggested there are legal administrative methods Trump could use to cancel DACA, putting the onus back on the administration if it wants to pursue the issue.&nbsp;

Trump said in the interview that in the wake of the court ruling, he would issue an order addressing migration issues that include DACA.

"We're going to have a road to citizenship," he said.

Trump is facing an uphill battle to reelection in November and has made cutting immigration -- both legal and illegal -- a cornerstone of a platform aimed at his white, working-class base.

Hours after Trump spoke, the White House put out a statement that seemed to walk back his remarks on creating a path to citizenship for DACA beneficiaries. &nbsp;

The United States is home to more than 35 million people of Mexican origin and critics of both leaders fear the get-together could help Trump woo voters from that community.

Even if Lopez Obrador`s intention had been to defend Mexico, his support for Trump only made it more likely that the real estate mogul would serve another four years, said Andres Rozental, a former Mexican deputy foreign minister.
