A bipartisan House panel has revealed in a hearing that the first assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump happened because of failures on part of Secret Service and not local police. During the first hearing on Thursday (Sep 26), the Republican co-chair of the committee, Rep. Mike Kelly from Pennsylvania, threw light on a series of failures by the Secret Service that paved way for the shooter to open fire on Trump from a nearby building.

"In the days leading up to the rally, it was not a single mistake that allowed Crooks to outmaneuver one of our country's most elite group of security professionals. There were security failures on multiple fronts," said Kelly.

The House panel has seven Republicans and six Democrats on board, which has spent last two months analysing the security failures which allowed the July 13 attack to happen.

During the hearing, local police officers talked about the complex system of communication on the day of attack, where separate radio and communication groups were set up.

A testimony revealed that just before the moments Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Trump, information about a man on the roof was sent out to two different communication channels through two communication posts. However, that information never reached the Secret Service agents on Trump’s detail.

It was also highlighted how FirstNet cell system, established in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, was not fully operational for the emergency responders at the time of the attack. While the normal cell phone connection was spotty, which didn’t allow local officers to share Crooks’s details via phone, FirstNet cell system was also not accessible for some officers.

“We created a solution, and yet it’s 2024, and we’re still not implementing that solution at the highest levels of our security agencies” to keep Trump safe, Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida said.

The Secret Service had initially blamed&nbsp;local law enforcement for the catastrophe in Butler. However, in later stages of the investigation, the agency repeatedly said it was fully to blame for the failures that day.

The hearing comes a day after a bipartisan committee in the Senate released a damning report highlighting key failures by the Secret Service that day.

Independent journalist Ken Klippenstein shared a 271-page research file on former United States President Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, which allegedly had been hacked by Iranian actors to influence US presidential&nbsp;elections.

According to the Tempe Police Department, the&nbsp;Democratic National Committee office, situated near&nbsp;Southern Avenue and Priest Drive in Tempe, suffered gunfire damage after the incident. Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the shooting.

“No one was inside the office during the overnight hours, but this raises concerns about the safety of those who work in that building, as well as those nearby,” the police said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The investigators are analysing evidence collected at the scene and have beefed up the security for staff and others in the area.&nbsp;

The police are labelling the incident as a property crime at this stage as no one was present at the office during the incident.

“We are grateful to Tempe Police for coming quickly to the scene and are fortunate no one was present or injured,” said Sean McEnerney, the Arizona Democratic Party coordinated campaign manager.&nbsp;

Notably, it was the second incident of criminal damage at the Democrat office in as many weeks. On September 16, just after midnight, the front windows were shot with what appeared to be a BB gun or pellet gun.&nbsp;

"The Justice Department will not tolerate violence that strikes at the heart of our democracy, and we will find and hold accountable those who perpetrate it. This must stop," said Attorney General Merrick Garland, adding that he would&nbsp;"use every available tool" to hold Routh accountable.

Routh has been remanded in custody ahead of the trial. He already faces up to 20 years in prison on two gun-related charges but faces a maximum life sentence if convicted on the new, more serious charge.&nbsp;

The Secret Service said its agents were accompanying&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;on the golf course when one who was securing holes ahead of&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;spotted a gun barrel in some bushes near the property line.&nbsp;

Multiple agents engaged Routh and&nbsp;fired at least four rounds at him.

The gunman then dropped his AK-47-style rifle, two backpacks, a GoPro camera and other items and fled in a black Nissan car. Routh was later taken into custody.&nbsp;

Former US president Donald Trump has rejected the invitation to participate in another TV debate against&nbsp;Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the November election after CNN&nbsp;extended the courtesy to both leaders.&nbsp;

Speaking&nbsp;at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina on Saturday (Sep 21) Trump said Harris only wanted a rematch because she was losing.

“She’s done one debate, I’ve done two. It’s too late to do another, I’d love to in many ways but it’s too late, the voting is cast, the voters are out there, immediately – is everybody voting, please? Get out and vote,” Trump said.

While Trump rejected, Harris accepted the CNN invite readily with her campaign stating that US citizens needed to see the two leaders in action once again.&nbsp;

“The American people deserve another opportunity to see Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump debate before they cast their ballots,” Harris-Walz campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said.

“It would be unprecedented in modern history for there to just be one general election debate. Debates offer a unique chance for voters to see the candidates side by side and take stock of their competing visions for America."

Among the failures identified by Rowe were poor communication with local law enforcement, an "over-reliance" on mobile devices "resulting in information being siloed" and line of sight issues, which "were acknowledged but not properly mitigated."

"At approximately 18:10 local time, by a phone call, the&nbsp;Secret&nbsp;Service&nbsp;security room calls the countersniper response agent reporting an individual on the roof of the AGR building," Rowe said.

"That vital piece of information was&nbsp;not&nbsp;relayed over the&nbsp;Secret&nbsp;Service&nbsp;radio network."

Two attendees of the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania were injured from gunfire and a third, 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, died as a result.

Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service personnel.

Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the aftermath of the incident and several additional Secret Service agents have been put on leave.

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, described the move by the Federal Reserve to cut its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point as a " political move," and said it would have been better if the move had been smaller, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“It really is a political move. Most people thought it was going to be half of that number, which probably would have been the right thing to do,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax on Thursday. “So it’s a political move to try and keep somebody in office, but it’s not gonna work, because the inflation has been so bad.”

The former president appeared to then level criticism at Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, saying he "missed the inflation."

“They missed it. They missed the number. They’re either too early or too late. Now they’re too early. Before they were too late. But inflation is already done,” Trump said.

The half-point cut was the Fed's first rate reduction in more than four years and came after holding rates at their highest level in two decades for more than a year.

Trump has often criticised the central bank and has said he believes that presidents should be involved in a greater capacity in determining the Fed's interest-rate decisions. That represents a direct contradiction of long-standing efforts to remove politics from such decisions to the extent possible. He also suggested not reappointing Powell as Fed chief.

His comments came after earlier Thursday when President Joe Biden said the rate reduction was "an important signal" that inflation had moderated.

“Lowering interest rates isn’t a declaration of victory,” Biden told the Economic Club of Washington, DC. “It’s a declaration of progress, to signal we’ve entered a new phase of our economy and our recovery.”
