All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital in the national capital Delhi has detected the presence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in seven of the samples collected, local reports said citing Lancet Microbe journal.

"It is clarified that these seven cases have no link whatsoever to the recent surge in respiratory infections in children reported from some parts of the world, including China. The seven cases have been detected as a part of an ongoing study at AIIMS Delhi in the six-month period (April to September 2023) and are no cause for worry," an Indian government press release said.

It also added that since January 2023 till date "NO Mycoplasma pneumonia was detected in the 611 samples tested at the Department of Microbiology, AIIMS Delhi as a part ICMR's multiple respiratory pathogen surveillance, which included mainly severe acute respiratory illness (SARI, which comprised about 95% of these cases) by real-time PCR."

Stating that the Union Health Ministry is in touch with state health authorities and is continuously taking stock of the situation everyday, the release further clarified that Mycoplasma pneumonia is the commonest bacterial cause of community acquired pneumonia and is the reason for nearly 15-30percent of all such infections.

"Such surge has not been reported from any part of India," it said.

The findings of the report titled "Mycoplasma pneumoniae: delayed re-emergence after COVID-19 pandemic restrictions" in the Lancet journal comes as China and several other European nations have seen a spike in the 'Walking pneumonia' cases.

'Walking pneumonia' is a colloquial term used to describe a mild form of pneumonia, a respiratory illness. Unlike typical pneumonia, walking pneumonia is often caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

According to the findings made in the journal, one case was identified through an early-stage PCR test, while the remaining six cases were detected using the IgM Elisa test, applicable even in later stages of infection, reports suggested.

The positivity rates for the PCR and IgM Elisa tests were reported as 3 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively, based on the research.

The meeting, led by Palestinian Ambassador to India, Adnan Abu Al-Haija, and Arab League's Ambassador to Delhi, Yusuf Mohamed Jameel, underscored the enduring commitment of Arab nations to the Palestinian cause.

Speaking to WION, Ambassador Al-Haija said, "It's nothing new from the Arab countries, to be at the Palestine embassy in solidarity... Their support started 75 years ago for the Palestine cause; they all have been supporting the Palestinian cause." Ambassador Jameel echoed the sentiment, underlining the responsibility to address the challenging circumstances faced by the Palestinian people, stating, "we join to express our solidarity with the Palestinian people, when they are facing a war for their existence, and a challenging time...it's our duty to reflect on this tragedy, to end the suffering of Palestinian people.”

Present at the Palestine embassy's Arafat-Indira Cultural Centre were envoys of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen, Oman, Sudan, Djibouti, Algeria, Syria, and Tunisia, along with diplomats from Qatar and Kuwait among others.

Regarding India's humanitarian aid to Gaza, the envoy lamented the challenges, stating, "We have lots of humanitarian aid in Egypt, we have thousands of tons, and I am sure we need, but the problem is that Israelis are not allowing the international community to supply Gaza, what it's needed. 37 of the 40 most polluted cities are in South Asia. PM2.5 levels in Delhi, Kathmandu, Lahore, and Dhaka are up to 20 times higher than levels the WHO calls 'healthy'. What are the reasons for this, and what are the solutions? Experts track it down to a spurt in economic activity and industrialization that is tripping over itself. The World Bank has called for a coordinated approach among South Asian nations to defeat the malaise and the very real threat it poses.

Ayushmaan, a Delhi-based housing rights lawyer well-known by his drag avatar Lush Monsoon, is advocating for an authentic representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Indian entertainment industry.

After the release of the docu-series Rainbow Rishta, which captures the challenges and vibrancy of the LGBTQIA+ community in India, WION caught up with Ayushmaan for a quick chat over a variety of topics.

Rainbow Rishta is a compilation of six stories that show the rawness behind queer love and what it is like to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community in India. One of these stories is of Ayushmaan's.

Speaking to WION in an exclusive conversation after the release of the series, Ayushmaan said that the queer community "has mostly been portrayed as either caricatures or victims in entertainment in India."

"Growing up, I did not have any queer role models to look up to. All the queer characters were shown as either sad or suffering. I hope that through this series people get to experience our joy, love, and laughter," he added.

He said that even though even queer people "face multiple struggles and challenges due to society’s heteronormative setup" but at the same time they also "manage to find our happiness, allies, and chosen families."

"All the stories on Rainbow Rishta depict that it is possible to find love, and to be queer and thriving. I also hope that the viewers can see that LGBTQI+ people feel the same need for love and companionship as everyone else, and behind all our glamorous façade and stereotypes is the human desire to feel seen and visible," he told WION.

Ayushmaan pointed out that one significant challenge faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the Indian entertainment industry was the lack of opportunities to tell their own stories authentically.

"With queer people behind and in front of the camera, we will be able to bring out the nuances in our life, beyond just the usual tropes."

"Queerness isn’t just one thing and it has several different aspects. I wish people could see the experiences of people across the spectrum. And Rainbow Rishta tries to do that. Moreover, queer people aren’t always accorded the privilege of leading normal lives, so in our urge of assimilating we shouldn’t lose the richness of our lives."

Speaking to WION in an exclusive conversation after the release of the series, Ayushmaan said that the queer community "has mostly been portrayed as either caricatures or victims in entertainment in India." Also Read | Rainbow Rishta review: Tinged with gloom, this docu-series is a candid exploration of queer emotions "Growing up, I did not have any queer role models to look up to. All the queer characters were shown as either sad or suffering. I hope that through this series people get to experience our joy, love, and laughter," he added. He said that even though even queer people "face multiple struggles and challenges due to society’s heteronormative setup" but at the same time they also "manage to find our happiness, allies, and chosen families." "All the stories on Rainbow Rishta depict that it is possible to find love, and to be queer and thriving. I also hope that the viewers can see that LGBTQI+ people feel the same need for love and companionship as everyone else, and behind all our glamorous façade and stereotypes is the human desire to feel seen and visible," he told WION. "With queer people behind and in front of the camera, we will be able to bring out the nuances in our life, beyond just the usual tropes." "Queerness isn’t just one thing and it has several different aspects. I wish people could see the experiences of people across the spectrum. And Rainbow Rishta tries to do that. Moreover, queer people aren’t always accorded the privilege of leading normal lives, so in our urge of assimilating we shouldn’t lose the richness of our lives." Air pollution has choked Delhi, Now the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has proposed the idea of "artificial rain" to reduce pollution levels in the national capital. But will it help? Watch this story to know more

Air pollution increases in Delhi | Artificial rain - proposed by IIT Kanpur - likely to be attempted

The famed Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs) and their lakhs of alumni are the global brand ambassadors of the coveted technology institution, which is among the toughest in the world, to get admitted into. From CEOs of top firms to entrepreneurs and executives in various sectors, IITans have taken the institute's image far and wide. If that was not enough, the institutions themselves are now gradually operationalising campuses on foreign soil, as part of the Indian Government's partnership with governments in West Asia and Africa. On Monday, the IIT-Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was formally inaugurated by the President of the country in the presence of officials from India and the host nation. This is the first-ever IIT on foreign soil and more are to follow.

The courses at IIT Madras Zanzibar campus are open to students of all nationalities, including Indians and the inaugural batch has commenced academic courses with B.S. and M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. For now, the 232-acre campus at Zanzibar caters to 45 students, and comprises an academic block, faculty accommodation and a student hostel, with ample scope for infrastructure expansion and more labs to be constructed.

"The Indian Government's National Education Policy talks about Internationalisation and that includes student exchange, faculty exchange joint degree programmes and establishing international campuses, that's where this IIT-M Zanzibar campus fits in," says Prof. V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, while speaking to WION.

Further, he explains that the Zanzibar campus was established based on three criteria - the host country must have a need for such a high-tech education at the college-level, support from the government of the host nation and a good school education system to offer a solid foundation. "Tanzania clicked on all three parameters," he said.

Today, there are more IITs in India than ever and this expansion to foreign shores is happening at a time when there is a shortage of quality faculty in academia. Prof Kamakoti admits that the faculty shortage is a global issue and IITs too face the same. However, he revealed to WION that IIT-Madras alone has recruited more than 100 faculty members in recent times and that the pan-India IITs are on a recruitment spree. As far as the Zanzibar campus goes, he says that exclusive faculty have been recruited for that campus and that those from the primary IIT-Madras campus would also be visiting them.

In terms of the tangible outcomes from the international campus, he says that it would help better understand Africa and the challenges of the continent, provide innovative solutions for them, carry our research relevant to that region, create opportunities for startups, industrial collaboration research parks etc. While the Zanzibar campus is a collaborative effort between the Indian and Tanzanian Governments, India is primarily investing its knowledge and human resources, while the capital investments would be from the hosts. 30 candidates from Africa are pursuing their PhD at the IIT-M campus in Chennai, this will empower them to become faculty in their respective domains, the IIT-M Director says,

While the IIT-M foreign campus is up and running, soon IIT-Delhi will be following suit and establishing its overseas campus in Abu Dhabi. This effort is said to be aimed at spreading the IIT brand name across the world. "IIT-M alone has some 55,000 alumni and overall IITs have lakhs of alumni, this is a cult. We want it to be a global cult," Prof. Kamakoti, expressed optimistically. In the coming years, courses in Electronic systems, Mining, Ocean Engineering and rare-earth elements are to be made available for students, he adds.

How Delhi's artificial rain plan is a potential solution to pollution crisis

The residents of Indian capital Delhi and National Capital Region surrounding it may soon get respite from the hazardous air they have been breathing at least since the beginning of this month. The Delhi government will attempt to induce artificial rain through cloud seeding this month, Gopal Rai, the environment minister of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, said on November 8.

Rai said that a meeting with scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was held to pave way for an artificial rain in Delhi during the beginning of the third week of November.

"Experts anticipate that such conditions could develop around November 20-21. We have asked the scientists to prepare a proposal in this regard which will be submitted to the Supreme Court," the minister added.

According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, research on artificial rain is yet to make a significant progress.

"There have been a few attempts in India… in Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Globally, research is being conducted on artificial rain, which requires the basic requirement of clouds or moisture. Only under these conditions can it occur," Mohapatra was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

"Certain nuclei are sprinkled into the clouds to facilitate cloud condensation, leading to rainfall. In India, research on artificial rain is ongoing, but it has not made significant progress so far," Mohapatra added.

The Chinese government has been a top proponent of cloud-seeding technology, and has spent billions of dollars in efforts to manipulate the weather during significant events including the 2008 Olympics.

Beijing launched a two-hour cloud-seeding operation on the eve of the Communist Party’s centenary on July 1, 2021 which resulted in a marked drop in air pollution.

Delhi Pollution: What else is being done?

The hazardous levels of pollution have impacted the lives and lifelines across northern India. As a reactive measure, Delhi government has ordered an early winter break in schools from November 9 to 18 due to deteriorating air quality.
