China -- Australia's biggest trading partner -- responded by imposing tariffs and disrupting more than a dozen key industries, including wine, barley and coal.

Marles said the recent interception of an Australian patrol plane in international airspace by a Chinese warplane as well as Australia's "abiding interest in the Pacific" were among topics discussed.&nbsp;

This included Australia's focus on ensuring "that the countries of the Pacific are not put in a position of increased militarisation", he said.

"Australia and China's relationship is complex. And it's precisely because of this complexity that it is really important that we are engaging in dialogue right now."

Asked about next steps, he said Australia wanted to move in a "very sober and very deliberate manner. We don't underestimate the difficulties that we've had in our bilateral relationship".

He stressed that "while there is a change of tone, there is absolutely no change in the substance of Australia's national interests".

Spain said Monday that the mobile phones of Prime Minister&nbsp;Pedro&nbsp;Sanchez and Defence Minister Margarita Robles were tapped using Pegasus spyware in an "illicit and external" intervention.&nbsp;

"It is not a supposition, they are facts of enormous gravity," the minister of the presidency, Felix Bolanos, said, confirming the news.&nbsp;

"We are absolutely certain that it was an external attack... because in Spain, in a democracy like ours, all such interventions are carried out by official bodies and with judicial authorisation," he said.

The defence minister highlighted that “Indian Armed Forces and paramilitary forces worked together with the courageous Muktijoddhas (the fighters of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War) in their valiant struggle. In the course of the conflict, more than 1,650 brave Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice".

“I am glad that the cooperation between the Armed Forces of both countries is steadily progressing, by way of several activities - defence dialogue, staff talks, joint training, exercise and high-level exchanges. Defence cooperation between India and Bangladesh has increased with New Delhi extending USD 500 million Defence Line of Credit to further consolidate ties,” Singh said. &nbsp;

A tri-service contingent from Bangladesh Armed Forces participated at the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi this year. Similarly, a marching tri-service contingent of 122 members from India is expected to participate at the Victory Day Parade in Dhaka on 16 December 2021.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said that the bloc's allies and partners are trying to hold the Taliban accountable for all the pledges they made on terrorism, not allowing their soil to be used against others, human rights, and providing safe passage for those who are willing to leave Afghanistan, reported local media.

The US State Department called in a statement for the 'unconditional release of those currently being held'.&nbsp;

Ndaw and Ouane had been tasked with overseeing an 18-month transition back to civilian rule after the August takeover, but they appear to have moved against the military's control over a number of key positions.&nbsp;

"The sacking of the pillars of the coup was an enormous misjudgement," a senior former Malian government official said. "The actions are probably aimed at getting them back in their jobs."&nbsp;

The military's ultimate goal was not immediately clear. One military official in Kati said this was not an arrest. "What they have done is not good," the source said, referring to the cabinet reshuffle. "We are letting them know, decisions will be made."&nbsp;

India's defence minister Rajnath Singh will visit Russia next week for the SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organisation defence ministers' meet. Russia is the chair of BRICS and SCO grouping for this year and will be holding all meetings -- that traditionally happen annually.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the proposal to expand the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in 173 border and coastal districts from where one lakh new cadets will be inducted, an official statement said on Sunday.

The expansion of the NCC was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech on Saturday.

He said the NCC will be expanded in border and coastal districts so that these areas "get trained manpower for disaster management, and the youth will also get skill training for making their career in the armed forces".

The defence ministry's statement said Singh has approved the NCC proposal "for a major expansion scheme".

"More than 1,000 schools and colleges have been identified in border and coastal districts where NCC will be introduced," it said.

A total of one lakh cadets from 173 border and coastal districts will be inducted into the NCC, it said, adding that one-third of them will be girls.

"As part of the expansion plan, a total of 83 NCC units will be upgraded (Army 53, Navy 20, Air Force 10) to impart NCC training to the cadets in the border and coastal areas," the ministry noted.

The Army will provide training and administrative support to NCC units located in border areas, it said.

The Navy will provide support to NCC units in coastal areas and the Air Force will provide support to those located close to its stations, it added.

The NCC is a youth development movement managed by the armed forces. It also provides exposure to cadets in a wide range of activities, with a distinct emphasis on social services, discipline and adventure training.

It is open to all regular students of schools and colleges on a voluntary basis.

The NCC expansion plan will be implemented in partnership with state governments, the ministry said.

Addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi had said, "About 173 districts in our border areas, our coastal areas share their boundaries with some or the other nation's border or coastline. In the coming days, NCC would be extended in those border districts for the youth there."

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday called for bolstering the border infrastructure, saying that national security is the topmost priority of the Government.

He was inaugurating the Sisseri River bridge at Lower Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh.&nbsp;

The 200-metre long bridge between Jonai-Pasighat-Ranaghat-Roing road will provide connectivity between Dibang Valley and Siang to meet the long-pending demand of the people of Arunachal Pradesh as it would cut down the travel time from Pasighat to Roing by about five hours.

"The government has adopted the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) in its plan keeping in view the security of the people residing in the border areas. Infrastructural up-gradation is necessary for the security of the North-East and the entire country," said Singh.&nbsp;

Singh further stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the decision to stay out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), keeping in mind the economic interests of the country, especially the North-East.

"You must have seen that during the ASEAN summit in Bangkok recently, our PM took a very important decision that India will not be a part of RCEP. Farmers, labourers, factories and industries would have got affected had India joined the RCEP. This is a big decision," he said.

The Union Minister added that the government`s focus on the Act East Policy would open new doors of rapid infrastructural development in the North-East, especially Arunachal Pradesh.

He expressed confidence that just as the Sisseri River bridge would help the development of Lower Dibang Valley and East Siang, the strong infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh would also act as a bridge between India and South-East Asian countries.

The Sisseri River bridge provides connectivity to Tinsukia via Dhola-Sadia bridge. It was constructed by Project Brahmank of Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

"This bridge is also strategically important from the military viewpoint and will be a part of Trans Arunachal Highway. The bridge will play an important role in the overall development adding that it would open more avenues in the fields of employment, trade and tourism," said Singh.

The defence industry representatives travelling with the Defence Ministry include top public and private sector companies including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited, Larsen and Toubro.

The new private sector entrants into the defence sector include Adani Industries.

India and Russia have had over five decades of defence partnership. Major Indian defence hardware including tanks, nuclear submarines and fighter aircraft are of Russian origin.

Despite India diversifying its equipment, the two countries are still engaged in defence trade of more than five billion dollars every year, including the S-400 air defence missile system and SU-30 MKI fighter aircraft.

India and Russia have recently signed a deal for joint manufacturing of AK-203 assault rifles at the Ordnance Factory Board in Amethi.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the Indian Navy has vowed and undertaken steps to ensure that 26/11 Mumbai terror attack like incidents are not repeated.

"The sea route is secure under the Indian Navy's watch. The Navy has resolved and has taken steps to ensure that under no circumstances should a 26/11 be repeated," he told reporters on the sidelines of Navy Commanders Conference.

Singh also asserted that India has never been offensive or attacked any country in the world.

"India has never been offensive. India has never attacked any country in the world. India has never even acquired even an inch of land by force. But our armed forces have the capability to give a befitting reply to those who try to cast their evil eye on India," he said.

The Defence Minister lauded the Indian Navy for their commitment to indigenisation.

"I am very happy that the Indian Navy is progressing fast on indigenisation. Also, a high percentage of indigenous items have been installed. I congratulate the Navy for their success," Rajnath said.

Stressing on the need for India to become a leading exporter in defence equipment, Singh said, "I have seen that the three services (Army, Navy and Air Force) are making efforts to reduce dependency in defence imports and making India a leading exporter in defence items. These efforts will continue.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who arrived in the national capital from France visit on Thursday night, said that seven Rafale fighter jets will arrive in India by April or May next year. The Defence Minister was in France for the official handover of the first Rafale aircraft.

"Seven Rafale jets will arrive in India by April or May. The aircraft is capable of reaching up to the speed of 1800 kilometre per hour. I flew in a Rafale jet at the speed of 1300 kilometre per hour. The credit for the successful acquisition of the jets goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Singh said while addressing reporters.

He said that the France visit was a success and that he also held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron for over 35 minutes.

Responding to the Opposition's criticism over performing of 'Shastra puja', Singh said,&nbsp;"People can say whatever they want. I did what I thought was right and I will continue to do so. This is our faith, that there is a superpower and I have believed it since childhood."

"People from all religions have the right to pray according to their beliefs. I would not have objected if someone else had done the same. I feel there must have been a difference of opinion over the issue in Congress as well, it would not have been everybody's opinion," he said.

Singh also said that India does not intend to intimidate anyone by increasing its defence capabilities.

"After induction of Rafale fighter aircraft, the combat capability of the Indian Air Force will increase. We don't want to intimidate anyone by doing so. We will neither fear anyone nor will we intimidate," the Defence Minister said.

He said that some IAF officers were undergoing training in France to operate the aircraft. Speaking about the controversy over the Rafale deal, Singh said,&nbsp;"Baseless accusations were levelled against the Prime Minister over the Rafale deal and strong language was used against him. I think the people of the country have given a befitting response to that."&nbsp;
