There were reports that Ramaphosa was inclined to announce his resignation over the scandal even as he strongly denies all charges but the South Africa's presidential spokesperson said that President is still processing the independent panel report and will make an ‘announcement’ at the right time.&nbsp;

"The President appreciates the urgency of this issue. The President appreciates the enormity of this issue, what it means for the country, the stability of the country and government, and as a result of that he is still processing the report," Vincent Magwenya, Presidential Spokesperson said in a media briefing. 
 
"Ramaphosa is also engaging with number of role players and stakeholders across the governing party, different levels of the governing party, its alliance partners. He is engaging broad range of stakeholders," Magwenya added.

The panel was appointed by the speaker of the National Assembly to investigate whether there was any evidence of wrongdoing on President Cyril Ramaphosa's part in the Phala Phala saga. 
 
The panel in its report said there exists “prima facie” evidence that he breached anti-corruption laws and that he violated his oath of office. 
 
On June 1, Arthur Fraser, the former head of the State Security Agency laid criminal charges against President Cyril Ramaphosa over an alleged burglary of $4m (about R71.8m) at his Phala Phala, Limpopo game farm in February 2020.&nbsp; 
 
The money was allegedly stuffed in couch cushions in Ramaphosa’s home. He also said that Ramaphosa’s security tracked down the suspects, kidnapped them, paid them off for their silence and concealed the event from the police and the public. 
 
The ANC's National Executive Committee will be meeting on Friday to discuss the way forward. It's the first time members are meeting after the independent panel report.

Ramaphosa firstly confirmed that a robbery had taken place at his place however, in the same breath, said that the stolen money was less than that alleged. He also refuted the complaint which says that he attempted to cover up the robbery. He said that some $580,000 which had been paid in cash for buffalo was stolen from under sofa cushions from his farmhouse. "I did not 'hunt' for the perpetrators of the theft, as alleged, nor did I give any instructions for this to take place," his written submission to the panel report said, as per AFP news agency.

The African National Congress (ANC) has reaffirmed South Africans that the party is very serious about tackling corruption and winning back the hearts of its supporters.

On the final day of the ANC's policy conference in Johannesburg, its president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the party has decided to retain its step aside rule for those who are charged with corruption and other crimes.

"The overwhelming view of policy conference is for the retention of the step-aside provisions to enhance the integrity of the movement and its leadership," he said.

"Conference noted strong concerns on the perceived lack of consistency in the application and implementation of the policy. Conference agreed that these must receive urgent attention so that the application of the guidelines is impartial, fair and consistent," Ramaphosa said while addressing delegates on the final day of the policy conference.

Some of the ANC members demanded for the step-aside rule to be scrapped, arguing that this was used to fight factional battles, but it did not get the voice and support it wanted in the conference.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule was forced to step aside last year after he was charged of corruption, money laundering and fraud related to the asbestos project during his time as premier in the Free State province.

Ramaphosa is also currently facing investigation on the $4 million that was stolen from his Phala Phala farm in June 2020.

"Delegates have affirmed the ANC approach to the report of the State Capture Commission, and have urged that the findings and recommendations of the report form the basis of a society-wide effort to tackle corruption in all its forms," the party President said.

Over the last three days, ANC has developed a series of policy proposals on how to achieve its revolutionary objectives.

"Some existing policies we have affirmed, some we have refined and some we have changed. These policy proposals will now go to the structures of our movement for further debate before being placed before our 55th National Conference for consideration and adoption," Ramaphosa said.

"This policy conference gives us hope for the future of our movement. It has sent a clear signal to our members, our supporters and the people of this country that, whatever our challenges, whatever our shortcomings, the ANC is alive," he added.

South Africa’s governing party, the African National Congress leader Cyril Ramaphosa has warned his party members that factions within the organisation have&nbsp;left the ANC at its weakest.

“The ANC is today at its weakest and its most vulnerable since the advent of democracy... The divisions amongst us have also severely weakened our organisation,” Ramaphosa said while speaking at the party’s sixth national policy conference at Nasrec, Johannesburg on Friday.

ANC’s weaknesses were driven by the competition for positions, the contestation of structures, and the pursuit of access to public resources,&nbsp;he added.

“Our weaknesses are evident in the distrust, disillusionment, and frustration that is expressed by many people towards our movement and our government. They are reflected in our support in the local government elections in November last year, where for the first time, we fell below 50 per cent of the national vote,” he said.

He also stressed that after this policy conference the party must emerge united and chalk out all the differences.

The national democratic revolution currently faces a number of challenges and perils. Our movement, the ANC has been weakened on a number of fronts,” Ramaphosa said.

The conference, which ends on Sunday, serves as an opportunity to make self-introspection, assess the strengths and weaknesses of the policies ANC has adopted in the previous conference, and re-imagine better strategies that work for the party and more for the country.

It’s now or never for the ANC to try win back the hearts of its supporters.

“From this gathering, we need to send out a clear message of intent from our movement. A clear message that we are committed to the renewal and revitalisation of the African National Congress,” he said.

Amongst many issues, the conference is expected to address graft allegations against ANC members, those that have been implicated by the state capture commission. At least 200 ANC members are on the list, including senior officials.

“The commission finalised its work last month, and the government has embarked on a process to consider all the commission’s findings and recommendations.&nbsp;As the ANC, we have consistently maintained that the commission is a necessary part of the broader social effort to end all forms of state capture and corruption. We are therefore engaging with the findings and recommendations of the commission to determine how these can help to enhance the process of fundamental renewal and rebuilding within our movement,” the president said.

He also said that the ANC needs to replenish itself, drawing more young people into its ranks and into its leadership structures.

“The revival of the ANC Youth League is critical for our movement. We must have a cohort of young people to take over leadership of the movement and country,” Ramaphosa said.

The president held consultations with government, stakeholders, energy experts outside government to find a collective solution to the energy crisis.

"During the past three weeks, severe load shedding has disrupted all of our lives and caused immense damage to our economy. 
The daily power cuts we have been experiencing have inconvenienced millions of households and have presented huge challenges for businesses," Ramaphosa said in a briefing late Monday.

He announced various interventions that the government has developed to respond to the crisis immediately.

Firstly, to improve the performance Eskom’s existing fleet of power stations.

Secondly, to accelerate the procurement of new generation capacity.

Thirdly, intention to massively increase private investment in generation capacity.

Fourthly, design to enable businesses and households to invest in rooftop solar.

Finally, fundamentally transforming the electricity sector and positioning it for future sustainability.

Ramaphosa said over the next 12 months, Eskom will increase its budget towards extensive maintenance of these power stations, adding that the redtape around procurement of maintenance spares and parts would be relaxed.

The long list of measures also include Eskom importing and purchasing excess power from neighbouring countries in the SADC region, hiring former plant managers who left the power utility, recruiting skilled personnel including former engineers and plant managers to drive Eskom forward, cutting red tape and buying power from private producers.

After years of state capture and mismanagement, a capable and effective management team is working hard to turn the utility around and reverse years of decay, Ramaphosa said.

However, he cautioned, as things stand, the country is still faced with an electricity shortage of up to 6,000 MW.

On Eskoms' huge debt of R400 billion, Ramaphosa said it continues to be a huge burden on Eskom’s ability to address its many challenges.

"The National Treasury is working to finalise a sustainable solution to Eskom’s debt.The Minister of Finance will outline how government will deal with this matter in an effective manner when he presents the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in October," he said.

The measures announced by Ramaphosa, along with the steps taken thus far, are expected to stabilise energy security in the country and to help encourage investment in South Africa and create jobs.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the Johannesburg high court judgment where he was being sued by mineworkers who worked for Lonmin during the Marikana massacre in 2012.

They wanted an apology and compensation from Ramaphosa as they believed that he was complicit in the events leading up to that day.

"The tragic events of August 2012 in Marikana that led to the death of 44 people remained one of the most distressing moments of the post 1994 democratic era and a blight on SA’s contemporary history. The violence and killings should have never happened," statement from the presidency said.

"10 years later our hearts still go out to families who lost their loved ones. The violence and the killings that occurred should have never happened. We are still resolute and united in our condemnation of the brutal acts we witnessed," it said.

However, the Presidency mentioned that, “Disturbingly, is the ongoing politicisation of this tragedy leading to the unfair targeting and isolate [and] allocation of responsibility to the president."

The workers (plantiff) had asked the court to find that Ramaphosa and Lonmin mine (now Sibanye-Stillwater), were liable for the actions of the police who brutally shot dead 34 workers in Marikana on August 16, 2012 during a violent strike.

The presidency said the court held that the plaintiffs' particulars of claim were legally flawed and four aspects of the judgment needed to be emphasised.

“First, the high court agreed with the president’s arguments and held that the plaintiffs had not established that the president bore any legal duty in relation to the Marikana tragedy.”

The court made no finding that Ramaphosa was the cause of harmful conduct. The proceedings were not a trial and no evidence was led. The court was merely engaged in a legal debate regarding whether the plaintiffs’ allegations complied with the law, it said.

Second, the court rejected the plaintiff’s argument that certain email communications from President Ramaphosa sought to call for the murder of the striking workers. The judgement stated that the plaintiffs’ argument against the President “is not only far-fetched but also irreconcilable within the context of the email communication contents as a whole," the statement said.

Third, the high court agreed with Ramaphosa that there was no factual basis pleaded for the allegation that collusion between him, government and the senior police officers would have led to deaths of workers.

Fourth, on the allegations that the President Ramaphosa owed a duty of care to the plaintiffs due to his role as director of Lonmin, the High Court agreed with the President that the allegation was incorrect as a matter of law.

"In the judgment the court said, the allegations pleaded do not show that the first defendant owed the plaintiffs legal duties, and he therefore cannot in law incur liability to the plaintiffs in delict in his capacity as director of Lonmin, or ‘in pursuit of his personal interests and those of Lonmin’.”

He has opened criminal charges against Ramaphosa, Fraser said. A case of money laundering and kidnapping has been registered at the police station in Rosebank, Johannesburg, police spokesperson said in a statement. &nbsp;

The President's office, in a statement, has also acknowledged that the theft from the farm of Ramaphosa took place. They said he was "not involved in any criminal conduct and once again pledges his full cooperation with any police investigation." At the time of the burglary, the president was out of the country, the spokesperson said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He added that at least 63 people are still missing but troops deployed by the South African National Defence Force are still looking for them.

The cost of the damage caused by the floods has exceeded $10 billion as per Pillay.

The unemployment rate in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;soared to its highest level on record in the final quarter of last year, official data showed Tuesday, as the impact of the pandemic continues to be felt.

The jobless rate rose 0.4 percent points to 35.3 percent in the final three months of 2021, compared to 34.9 percent in the previous quarter.

"This is the highest unemployment rate recorded since the start of the (quarterly labour force survey) in 2008," StatsSA said in a report.

It is also the fifth increase in unemployment since the country was placed under a strict Covid lockdown in March 2020.

There are now 7.9 million unemployed people in the continent's most industrialised country, compared to 14.5 million with jobs.&nbsp;

President Cyril Ramaphosa last week rolled back most of the remaining coronavirus restrictions as new infections fell and fewer deaths were reported.

The changes meant nearly all restrictions on social and economic activity were scrapped, he said.
