Shanghai will lock down a district of 2.7 million people on Saturday to conduct mass coronavirus testing, city authorities said, as the Chinese metropolis struggles to fully emerge from punishing curbs.

The city eased many restrictions last week, after confining most of its 25 million residents to their homes since March as China battled its worst Covid outbreak in two years.

But the lockdown was never fully lifted, with hundreds of thousands in China's biggest city still restricted to their homes and multiple residential compounds put under fresh stay-home orders.

The southwestern district of Minhang, home to 2.7 million people, will be placed under "closed management" on Saturday morning and all residents will be tested, district authorities said in a social media post on Thursday.

"The closure will be lifted after samples have been collected," they added, without giving a specific time or date.

The statement also did not say what measures would be imposed if any district residents test positive.

Under China's stringent zero-Covid approach, all positive cases are isolated and close contacts -- often including the entire building or community where they live -- are made to quarantine.

Shanghai reported nine new local infections on Thursday -- none in Minhang.

Fears of another lockdown

The district's announcement sparked fear among some social media users that the lockdown could be prolonged beyond Saturday if any cases are found.

"You need to clarify if (the lockdown) will really be lifted after samples are collected," one user wrote on Weibo.

"If there are abnormal results after the tests, what will you do? Continue the lockdown?" asked another.

The city government on Thursday denied rumours that the rest of the city would lock down again in phases, saying that while individual areas had issued confinement orders, the city as a whole was "gradually resuming normal production and life".

The lockdown in Shanghai -- a major global shipping hub -- had threatened to pile further pressure on already-strained international supply chains.

But the city has slowly come back to life in recent days.

The Chinese capital's largest district, however, on Thursday ordered clubs and bars to close after some venues were linked to Covid cases, according to state media.

Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department had placed Taniguchi on an international wanted list after arresting his ex-wife and two sons on May 30 on suspicion of fraud, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.

Taniguchi will be deported in coordination with the embassy, Lampung immigration official Is Edy Eko Putranto told a press conference where the Japanese suspect was paraded before the media.

China suspects wind blowing from North Korea leading to Covid wave in Dandong

While on her Pakistan visit on Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock tested positive for Covid 19, forcing her to cut short her trip and return to Germany.

Germany's ministry of foreign affairs confirmed her reports saying that "Annalena Baerbock had a positive screening test after lunch today" the News International reported.

After testing positive for the virus, the minister cancelled all further dates of the trip, which also included stops in Greece and Turkey, the ministry said.

As per the official Twitter handle of the ministry, Baerbock regularly tests herself for the virus. It further said that she was tested negative for the virus in the morning, the News International reported.

German FM Annalena Baerbock reached Pakistan today, where she was welcomed by the Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and other senior officials.

The minister along with her Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also planted a sapling on the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Baerbock's visit to Pakistan was scheduled for June 7 and 8 to hold a discussion on bilateral and global issues with her counterpart from Pakistan. This comes as a response to the invitation of Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

The two sides attach special importance to strengthening bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, including trade and investment, energy, defence, and people-to-people contacts, said the ministry.

The visit of the German foreign minister is part of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and is expected to further boost the multi-faceted Pakistan-Germany relationship, according to the statement.

The US was one of the few major markets where it hasn't yet received authorization, while the EU, UK, Canada, Australia are among many that have already given it the green light.

The vaccine is based on lab-grown viral proteins. Officials are hoping that Novavax will help people overcome vaccine hesitancy. The vaccine does not need cold storage requirements as Pfizer and Moerna vaccines do.

Possible myocarditis link

Novavax's vaccine was found to be more than 90 percent effective against symptomatic cases of the disease. But its trial was conducted long before the currently circulating sub variants of Omicron were dominant, and the company may yet have to add a booster or update its shot.

What's more, six cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, were detected in the group that received the vaccine, against one case in the placebo group, in a trial of around 40,000 people.

Novavax says there is insufficient evidence to establish a causal relationship between the cases of myocarditis and the vaccine.

Since the emergency use authorisation of the first Covid&nbsp;vaccines in the country last winter, federal data show that US states received a staggering 720 million Covid&nbsp;doses, and more than 570 million of those shots have been administered, according to a report by ABC News.&nbsp;Millions of unused Covid-19 doses in the United States are set to go wasted as the country's vaccination rates continued to decline amid an uptick in new infections.

However, state-provided data found that millions of those vaccine shots have not ended up in arms, largely due to a significant decline in the number of individuals willing to get vaccinated, Xinhua news agency reported.

Many vaccine doses are now left unused in refrigerators or discarded in trash cans across the country.

Millions of Covid&nbsp;vaccine doses have either gone to waste, remain unused, or will expire in the coming weeks and months, according to the ABC News report, citing officials from health departments in states and state-provided data.

"It is a tremendous loss of opportunity for these vaccines to not make it into the shoulders of those who need them," said C. Buddy Creech, Director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program and professor at the Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University.

"Not only is it a financial loss for the purchaser of vaccines -- the US government -- but also a significant health loss for those who are not yet protected from Covid and its complications," he added.

Nearly 66.1 per cent of the US population is fully vaccinated against Covid as of Monday, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Covid-19 boosters have been authorised in the US for adults since November. However, CDC data show less than 50 per cent of eligible Americans have received their first booster.

Vaccination rates continued to drop in the country amid declining demand for vaccines and hesitancy, leading to the waste of unused millions of doses currently in state stockpiles and at risk of expiring. As of April 20, the seven-day average number of administered vaccine doses per day was 470,903, a 13.2 per cent decrease from the previous week, according to the latest CDC data.

The country is witnessing an increase of new Covid-19 infections recently again, with an average of about 44,000 new cases and 310 new deaths each day, CDC data show.

"The pool of people that are unvaccinated is likely to remain unconvinced of the importance of vaccine-induced protection," said John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Boston Children's Hospital and an ABC News contributor, adding that convincing those still hesitant to get the vaccine shot will be a difficult feat. 
Some politicians and public health experts have raised concerns over the ethical implications of so many vaccine shots going to waste.

"The wastage of millions of doses is a stark reminder of the privilege we have had in accessing vaccines while the majority of the world had to wait months. Extraordinary resources and financial investment will ultimately go to waste," Brownstein added.

Now, new research has revealed that the virus is even affecting unborn babies.&nbsp;Researchers have found that babies born to COVID-19 infected mothers have exhibited neurodevelopmental outcomes at the age of six weeks.&nbsp;Such babies exhibited increased difficulty in relaxing and adapting their bodies while being held as compared to babies born to non-infected women.&nbsp;The analysis, which was presented at the 30th European Congress of Psychiatry in Budapest also pointed out that infants born from infected mothers also had significant difficulty in controlling their shoulder and head movements. This in particular suggests that Covid affects motor functions.

However, Dr Rosa Ayesa Arriola of the Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital in Spain pointed out that not all babies show neurodevelopmental differences.

"Our data shows that their risk is increased in comparison to those not exposed to Covid in the womb. We need a bigger study to confirm the exact extent of the difference."

The initial study compared 21 infants born to COVID-19 infected mothers to 21 born to healthy mothers.

As part of the test, mothers had to undergo a battery of assessments, this includes&nbsp;biochemical tests, along with psychological questionnaires during and after pregnancy.

Post-natally NBAS or Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale was also conducted to measure the baby's movement and behaviour.

The North African kingdom is just 14 kilometres (nine miles) from the coast of Spain, which has announced it will also put in place special measures for Moroccans from June 15 for two months.

More than 1,000 people including doctors, social workers and volunteers have signed up to help people arriving at ports and airports.

Most will come by boat from Spain.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is scurrying through death certificates across the country to analyse death cases that might be linked to long Covid. So far, it has detected more than 100 such cases, POLITICO has reported quoting officials familiar with the matter.

It is yet to be determined whether the people who died had any prior health issues, whether long Covid was the cause of their deaths or whether it was a contributing factor.

Long Covid is the term used to describe an array of symptoms that can last for months or longer after the initial&nbsp;coronavirus&nbsp;infection.

Several post-Covid health problems have been detected in different organ systems, including the heart, lungs and kidneys. Other issues involved blood circulation, the musculoskeletal system and the endocrine system; gastrointestinal conditions, neurological problems and psychiatric symptoms were also identified in the study.

According to POLITICO, the National Center for Health Statistics, a division within the CDC, has been collecting death certificates from states between 2020 and 2021.

The latest move by the CDC comes after they found in their study that one in 5 adult coronavirus survivors under age 65 in the US has experienced at least one health condition that could be attributed to long Covid.

The study found that Covid patients had twice the risk of uninfected people developing respiratory symptoms and lung problems, including pulmonary embolism.

Post-Covid patients ages 65 and older were at greater risk than the younger group of developing kidney failure, neurological conditions and most mental health conditions.

Since October 2021, after CDC approval, hospitals and medical facilities in the US have been tracking patients displaying long Covid symptoms with a specific identification known as an ICD-10 code.

That coding system, used for most reportable illnesses, has helped researchers narrow down which group of people to study.

“It would appear official case counts are under-estimating the true burden of infection by about 30-fold, which is a huge surprise,” said Denis Nash, an author of the study and a distinguished professor of epidemiology at the City University of New York School of Public Health.

“It’s very worrisome. To me, it means that our ability to really understand and get ahead of the virus is undermined,” Nash said.

American multinational pharmaceutical Pzifer completed its emergency use application to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to administer its COVID-19 vaccine to children under the age of 5 on Wednesday.

Pfizer said that its vaccine called ‘Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine’ is 80% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 for younger children.

"Pfizer and BioNTech completed a rolling application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization (EUA) of the 3-µg [microgram] dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years of age (also referred to as 6 months to under 5 years of age) on June 1, 2022," the company said in a statement.

Children under 5 are the last to get vaccines, but it also requires safety measures in place as it is a very sensitive target age group.

"We recognize parents are anxious to have their young children vaccinated against COVID-19 and while the FDA cannot predict how long its evaluation of the data and information will take, we will review any EUA request we receive as quickly as possible using a science-based approach," the FDA said.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, a lot of parents are hesitant to vaccinate children as young as 5, with 27 per cent saying they will "definitely not" get their children in this age group vaccinated. Only 18 per cent plan to vaccinate their kids right away, while 38 per cent say that they would like to wait and see before they decide.

The company said that it is working with governments to improve their health-system infrastructure and resolve regulatory and procurement obstacles that often delay the arrival of drugs.

Among the 23 drugs that are being sent for almost a fraction of the cost are for cancer, heart conditions and autoimmune diseases.

The report suggests that the move to sell its medicines at a cheaper cost will help Pfizer build a potentially large new market for prescription drugs and vaccines and also earn goodwill with employees for philanthropic efforts.

It comes at a time when US pharma giants such as Pfizer, and Moderna have been facing criticism over pricing and for keeping monopoly control over vaccines and new Paxlovid pill.

Pfizer has made nearly $26bn in revenues in the first three months of 2022, the bulk from its COVID-19 vaccine and new pill to treat the virus, The Guardian reported.

The New York-based firm&nbsp;posted total sales&nbsp;of $25.7bn in the first quarter, up 77 per cent from a year earlier.

Pfizer has also voiced its opposition to sharing its intellectual property for medicines, saying that others would struggle to produce its mRNA vaccine – one of only two on the market. It said that “it is not as simple as sharing the ‘recipe’”.
