There have been reports of headaches, sleep problems, dizziness, pins-and-needles feeling, loss of smell or taste and depression, etc. But the question is, why do some people have lingering effects from infection? Why does Covid infection sometimes result in an inability to sleep as well as "brain fog"? The scientists at the US National Institutes of Health have published a small new study that attempts to answer these questions. The study suggests that the immune response triggered by Covid infections damages the brain's blood vessels and could be responsible for long Covid symptoms. The paper was published in the journal Brain. The findings are based on brain autopsies from nine people who died suddenly after contracting the virus. The team found it was the people's own antibodies that attacked the cells lining the brain's blood vessels, causing inflammation and damage. It is said that this particular discovery could explain why some people have those lingering effects from infection and the findings may also help devise new treatments for long Covid. "Patients often develop neurological complications with COVID-19, but the underlying pathophysiological process is not well understood," said NIH scientist Avindra Nath, who is the paper's senior author. In the statement, he further added, "We had previously shown blood vessel damage and inflammation in patients' brains at autopsy, but we didn't understand the cause of the damage. I think in this paper we've gained important insight into the cascade of events." More about the study After analysing reports of nine individuals, aged 24 to 73, the scientists discovered that antibodies produced against Covid-19 mistakenly targeted cells that form the "blood-brain barrier". It is understood that damage to these cells can cause leakage of proteins, bleeding and clots, which elevates the risk of stroke. The leaks also trigger immune cells called macrophages to rush to the site to repair damage, causing inflammation. Normal cellular processes in the areas targeted by the attack were severely disrupted, it was found. It had implications for things such as their ability to de-toxify and to regulate metabolism. Most importantly, the latest findings can help the experts and scientists to study more about patients with long-term neurological symptoms. There are possibilities that new treatments can be developed, such as a drug that targets the build-up of antibodies on the blood-brain barrier. Nath said, "It is quite possible that this same immune response persists in Long COVID patients resulting in neuronal injury." He added that this would mean that a drug that dials down that immune response could help those patients. He said, "So these findings have very important therapeutic implications." In light of the recommendation, Ash decided "to enable the administering of mRNA Covid-19 vaccinations by Pfizer and Moderna to children aged six months to four or five years," he said.&nbsp;

Over six million Israelis have received at least two Covid-19 vaccination shots, included in them 17 percent of the country's children aged 5-11, which up to the latest approval had been the youngest group eligible for the inoculation.

Researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States have developed a new N95 face mask that can not only reduce COVID-19 spread but also kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus upon contact with it. The mask can potentially be worn longer, causing less plastic waste as it does not need to be replaced as frequently.

As reported by PTI, Edmund Palermo, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute said, “We think the work is the first step toward longer-lasting, self-sterilising personal protective equipment, such as the N95 respirator. It may help reduce transmission of airborne pathogens in general."

In research recently published in the journal Applied ACS Materials and Interfaces, the team successfully grafted broad-spectrum antimicrobial polymers onto the polypropylene filters used in N95 face masks. The active filtration layers in N95 masks are very sensitive to chemical modification. It can make them perform worse in terms of filtration, so they essentially no longer perform like N95s. They are made out of polypropylene, which is difficult to chemically modify.

The team, including researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, attached antimicrobial quaternary ammonium polymers to the fibre surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics using ultraviolet (UV)-initiated grafting. The team used only UV light and acetone in their process, which is widely available, to make it easy to implement.

The process can be applied to already manufactured polypropylene filters, rather than necessitating the development of new ones, the researchers said, as reported by PTI. The team did see a decrease in filtration efficiency when the process was applied directly to the filtration layer of N95 masks, but the solution is straightforward, they said. The user could wear an unaltered N95 mask along with another polypropylene layer with the antimicrobial polymer on top, according to the researchers.

However, the initial loan issued was of $57 billion, the largest ever issued by the organisation but was denied by Fernandez after succeeding his predecessor who requested the loan, reported by AFP.

The resignation comes&nbsp;after being criticised by the former president and current vice president Cristina Kirchner who gave a speech attacking the government for its economic management. Guzman was able to reach an agreement and prevent the country from defaulting despite Kirchner’s resistance.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports said separately that sports activities for the young can resume at non-school locations on June 27 in areas where no community cases have been reported for seven consecutive days, with the exception of basement venues, which will remain shut.

The Universal Beijing Resort, which had been closed for nearly two months, reopened on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Shanghai reported no new local cases - both symptomatic and asymptomatic - for June 24, the first time the Chinese economic hub had done so since Feb. 23.

As reported by Reuters, Shanghai Communist Party chief Li Qiang said at the opening of the city's party congress on Saturday that authorities had "won the war to defend Shanghai" against COVID by implementing the instructions of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and that Beijing's epidemic prevention decisions were "completely correct".&nbsp;

And underscoring continued difficulties in stamping out Omicron, the southern city of Shenzhen, which implemented a week-long lockdown in March, said on Saturday it would shut all cinemas and parks as well as suspend public events in the Futian district after six local cases were discovered there on Friday.&nbsp;

The city also now requires residents to show a negative COVID-19 test to enter public venues taken within the last 24 hours, shortened from 48 hours previously, which in essence requires people to test daily to enter places such as malls or take public transport.

“Driven by huge demand, influenza antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir are in short supply in many pharmacies of southern China,” the news report added.

According to CDC, you cannot tell the difference between flu and COVID-19 just by looking at the symptoms alone because they have some of the same symptoms. That’s why testing is needed to tell what the illness is and to confirm a diagnosis. Testing is also important because it can reveal if someone has both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

“The Xiamen (city) health commission in Fujian suggested (paediatricians) to not get involved with Covid-19 related work so as to better deal with the influenza high season among children,” the news report said.

Health officials in other provinces too have issued “alerts over the high prevalence of influenza and hospitals (have) adjusted measures to avoid crowded line-up and concentrated presence in public places,” it added.

Experts warn of dual risk from influenza and Covid: Report

India logged 17,073 new coronavirus infections, raising its tally to 4,34,07,046, while the daily positivity crossed 5 per cent after over four months, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday.

The death toll climbed to 5,25,020 with 21 fresh fatalities, data updated at 8 am by the ministry stated.

The active cases increased to 94,420, comprising 0.22 per cent of the total infections.

The national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.57 per cent, the ministry said.

An increase of 1,844 cases was recorded in the active COVID-19 case count in a span of 24 hours, as per the data.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.62 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 3.39 per cent, it stated.

The daily positivity crossed 5 per cent after a gap of 139 days.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,27,87,606, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.21 per cent.

According to the ministry, 197.11 crore doses of vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 inoculation drive.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore cases on May 4, 2021, three crore on June 23 and four crore cases on January 25 this year.

Beijing&nbsp;shut its schools in early May and asked students to move to online learning amid a spike in locally transmitted COVID-19 cases. Senior year students at middle and high schools were allowed to return to classrooms from June 2.

On Saturday, with case numbers trending lower in recent days, the capital's education commission said all primary and secondary school students in the capital can return to in-person classes from Monday. Kindergartens will be allowed to reopen from July 4.

The&nbsp;Beijing&nbsp;Municipal Bureau of Sports said separately that sports activities for the young can resume at non-school locations on June 27 in areas where no community cases have been reported for seven consecutive days, with the exception of basement venues, which will remain shut.

The Universal&nbsp;Beijing&nbsp;Resort, which had been closed for nearly two months, reopened on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Shanghai reported no new local cases - both symptomatic and asymptomatic - for June 24, the first time the Chinese economic hub had done so since Feb. 23.

It is the first attempt to estimate the number of deaths prevented directly and indirectly as a result of Covid-19 vaccinations. It found that 19.8 million deaths were prevented out of a potential 31.4 million deaths that would have occurred if no vaccines were available.

It was a 63 per cent reduction, the study found. &nbsp;The study used official figures or estimates when official data was not available for deaths from Covid, as well as total excess deaths from each country. These analyses were compared with a hypothetical alternative scenario in which no vaccine was administered.&nbsp;

The model accounted for variation in vaccination rates across countries, as well as differences in vaccine effectiveness based on the types of vaccines known to have been primarily used in each country. &nbsp;

The survey found nearly 9 per cent of Hispanic adults have long Covid, higher than non-Hispanic white and Black adults, and more than twice the percentage of non-Hispanic Asian adults.

There were also differences based on US states, with Kentucky and Alabama reporting the highest percentage of adults with long Covid&nbsp;symptoms, while Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia reported the lowest, according to the survey.

Long Covid involves the persistence of complications for more than four weeks after initial infection.

Researchers from the Johnson &amp; Johnson Office of the Chief Medical Officer Health of Women Team, who carried out the analysis of data from around 1.3 million patients, observed females with long Covid are presenting with a variety of symptoms including ear, nose, and throat issues; mood disorders, neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological disorders; as well as fatigue.

Male patients, however, were more likely to experience endocrine disorders such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

The study found that there 22 per cent more chance of women developing long Covid than men. The research has been published in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion.

"Knowledge about fundamental sex differences underpinning the clinical manifestations, disease progression, and health outcomes of Covid-19 is crucial for the identification and rational design of effective therapies and public health interventions that are inclusive of and sensitive to the potential differential treatment needs of both sexes," the researchers explained.

"Differences in immune system function between females and males could be an important driver of sex differences in long Covid syndrome. Females mount more rapid and robust innate and adaptive immune responses, which can protect them from initial infection and severity. However, this same difference can render females more vulnerable to prolonged autoimmune-related diseases," they added.

For the study, the team reviewed 640,634 total articles amounting to 1,393,355 unique individuals.

According to the New York Times, the rise of vaccination and herd immunity has resulted in Covid-related deaths falling drastically and it is now close to the lowest since the pandemic began. According to the Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, 230 Covid-related deaths were reported on June 16 - a huge fall from the 2200 cases recorded in February earlier this year when the country was dealing the Omicron sub-variant. The fall is almost similar when it comes to the seven-day moving average which is also down to almost one-tenth.

"In previous waves there were still substantial pockets of people who had not been vaccinated or exposed to the virus, and so were at the same risk of dying as people at the beginning of the pandemic,” Dr David Dowdy, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told The New York Times in an interview. "Those pockets don’t exist anymore."

Dr Joe Gerald, an associate professor of public health at the University of Arizona, told The New York Times that the situation has gotten much better since the Omicron surge between January &amp; March.

However, some doctors have warned the United States may see a surge in cases in the near future as a big percentage of people are opting to not take the booster vaccine shots.
