Researchers have now zeroed-in on a highly potent molecule that triggers sense of disgust in those who have Covid.

The molecule is called 2-furanmethanethiol. It is found in coffee. Researchers found that those with normal sense of smell associated this molecule with coffee and in some cases popcorn. But in those with Covid infection, it elicited a disgusted reaction with the patients equating the smell with sewage.

“This is solid evidence that it’s not ‘all in the head’, and that the sense of disgust can be related to the compounds in the distorted foods. The central nervous system is certainly involved as well in interpreting the signals that it receives from the nose.” said Dr Jane Parker, the director of the Flavour Centre at the University of Reading and co-author of the research. Dr Parker was quoted by The Guardian.

Pfizer has said that the three-dose vaccine created by them has shown 80 per cent effectiveness against the Omicron COVID-19 infection among children aged between six months and five years.

This is good news for parents as cases continue to rise once again around the world and according to the timeline presented by Pfizer, the vaccine is expected to be authorised by July this year. The company said in its statement that the vaccine has produced extremely positive results in the tests till now and if authorised, the vaccine will comprise of three shots of three micrograms each.

“We are pleased that our formulation for the youngest children, which we carefully selected to be one-tenth of the dose strength for adults, was well tolerated and produced a strong immune response,” said Albert Bourla, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive officer in the statement.

The development meant that Pfizer are closer to getting an emergency use authorisation for the vaccine and according to ABC News, the FDA will be reviewing their application on June 21 and 22.

If authorised, the company will be able to release the vaccine in the market by July and according to experts, the high efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 infection can be great news for patients.

However, Pfizer has made it clear that the results are preliminary and they will be conducting more tests in the future. They also warned that there can be some side effects from the vaccines in all age groups and they are looking to test it on a larger sample to verify all of their results.

"We've offered vaccines, not only to North Korea but to China as well, and we're prepared to do that immediately," he said at a press conference in Seoul.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, North Korea reported its first case of Omicron and despite a "maximum emergency" epidemic campaign, the virus has torn through its unvaccinated 25 million population.

On Saturday, North Korean state media reported nearly 2.5 million people had been sick with "fever", with 66 confirmed deaths since the outbreak started.&nbsp;

It added that the country had "intensified" its anti-epidemic campaign.

Biden and new South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed concern Saturday over North Korea's spiralling Covid-19 outbreak.

"The ROK and the US are willing to work with the international community to provide assistance to the DPRK to combat the virus," they said in a joint statement.

Yoon said the offer of aid was being made according to "humanitarian principles, separate from political and military issues" with Pyongyang.

For the first time since the pandemic year of 2020, Japan is going to open its borders for tourists. The government said on Tuesday (March 17) that it will first allow small groups from this month.

"Japanese travel companies will organise the tours and local guides will accompany them," an Japan Tourism Agency official told AFP.

Participants will have to be triple-vaccinated against Covid and have private medical insurance.

There will be no change to the current testing requirements for entering Japan, with visitors having to submit a negative Covid test taken 72 hours before departure and to test again upon arrival.

The agency is currently discussing the plan with regions that are expected to be of interest to foreign tourists, the official said.&nbsp;

How many tourists will be able to join each tour is yet to be decided.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered all cities and counties of the nation to "strictly lock down" their regions, as per KCNA.
