<p>Concerns have been raised over the rapid spread of the XBB1.16 variant as medical experts have warned that the new variant is able to evade the immune systems of people, and hence the coming four weeks are very crucial.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news agency ANI, Dr Dhiren Gupta, Senior Pediatrician at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said: "The XBB1.16 variant is the primary cause of the rise in cases among children and adults. This variant is showing immune escape and is able to evade the immune system. It is infecting those who had Covid infection during the previous waves and also teenagers and adults who have been vaccinated."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is likely to spread. Infections like adenovirus and influenza seem to be more bothersome than Covid. The next four weeks are going to be important," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There has been a significant rise in the number of Covid cases in India during the past few weeks, this has been attributed to a new variant known as XBB1.16. The number of cases in children under 12 has also been increasing," he said, further mentioning that the XBB1.16 variant is believed to be highly contagious and more virulent than the previous strains of the virus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news agency, a Consultant General Paediatrician at Madhukar Rainbow Children's Hospital, Dr SK Nakra said that conjunctivitis has also been reported in some Covid-positive cases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The symptoms of Covid are high fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, body aches and gastrointestinal symptoms. Red sticky eyes (conjunctivitis) has been also been reported by some physicians. However, this was seen in the earlier strains also in about 1-3 per cent of Covid patients. It is too early to say that this red eye is more common with the XBB1.16 variant."&nbsp;<br />

COVID-19: Expert issues warning over XBB1.16 variant as India records 7,830 new cases in 24 hours

<p>Taking to Twitter, he said, "Chaired a meeting to review the preparedness on COVID-19 and Influenza. Discussed ramping up genome sequencing, improving preparedness of hospitals and importance of Covid appropriate behaviour. It is important to remain vigilant and take all precautions."</p>

<p>A statement issued by the PMO said that the prime minister stressed on wearing masks is advisable when senior citizens and those with comorbidities visit crowded places."</p>

<p>The ministry said the active cases comprise 0.02 per cent of the total infections, while the national recovery rate was recorded at 98.79 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that some 89,078 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the last 24 hours. Till now, a total of 920 tests for Covid have been conducted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the ministry's website, some 2.2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the restricted emergency use authorisation to the Pune-based Serum Institute of India's coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine 'Covovax' for children aged between 7 to 12 years, India-based news agencies reported on Tuesday (June 28) citing sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sources said that DCGI also approved India's first indigenously developed mRNA vaccine against COVID-19 manufactured by Gennova Biopharmaceuticals for restricted emergency use for those aged 18 years and above. As per the source, approval has been given with certain conditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Third wave was not that serious, so there is no need to fear or have panic reactions. We should only go by the number of patients admitted in hospital. One lakh people or 50,000 people getting positive does not mean anything," Shetty said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While speaking to reporters he further said, "The whole country may be positive, but if there are no COVID patients in hospital, it doesn't make any difference. So concentration should be on the number of patients in the hospital, not the positivity."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The latest spike in cases is alarming as in the week of April 18 to April 24, India reported 15,700 fresh coronavirus cases, India-based news website The Times of India reported. It is an increase of 95 per cent as compared to the previous week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To assess the situation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting with chief ministers via video conferencing on Wednesday, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If we analyse the spike in Covid cases state-wise, a few states are witnessing a sudden rise. In the past two weeks, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have reported a rise,&nbsp;with most of the numbers reportedly coming from NCR cities.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Delhi recorded 6,326 cases in a week. Haryana and Uttar Pradesh logged 2,296 and 1,278 cases respectively in a week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report also mentioned that nine other states — Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Rajasthan and Punjab — reported a rise in cases this week.&nbsp;</p>

Fourth COVID-19 wave in India? List of states where cases are rising

<p>Amid fears and speculations over the fourth coronavirus (COVID-19) wave in India, the country reported 2,380 new cases on Thursday (April 21), up 15 per cent from yesterday. On Wednesday, India had reported 2,067 new Covid cases. In the span of 24 hours, there is an increase of 1,093 cases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the data released by the country's Union Health Ministry on Thursday, the total tally of Covid cases in India is 4,30,49,974. Meanwhile, the active cases in the country are 13,433.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data, which was updated at 8am (local time) revealed that the death toll climbed to 5,22,062 with 56 new fatalities. The active cases comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ministry said that the national COVID-19 recovery rate remained at 98.76 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While speaking to India-based news agency ANI, Dr SK Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) said that there is a possibility of new variants of Omicron in Delhi while adding that the samples at the ILBS lab have been sequenced.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is a possibility that new variants are emerging of the Omicron and they are being sequenced," said Dr Sarin, adding, "I think by today at our institute ILBS many samples have been sequenced and I think there are eight variants of which one is now dominating, we will come to know slowly."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Sarin also warned people and urged them to be careful. He said, "I would suggest people should be very careful. There is a fear that children may get infected because they are not adequately vaccinated. People must wear masks."&nbsp;</p>

COVID-19 in India: Amid fourth wave fears, new variants of the Omicron 'possibly emerging' in New Delhi

<p>Amid a surge in coronavirus (COVID-19) positivity rate in some parts of India, the central government on Tuesday (April 19) wrote a letter to some states, advising them to take pre-emptive actions in case required.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rajesh Bhushan, who is the country's Union health secretary, suggested the five states to follow the strategy of "test-track-treat-vaccination and adherence to covid-19 appropriate behaviour".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the letter, it is written that appropriate Covid measures must be considered and wearing masks in crowded places has been emphasised.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bhushan wrote, "These are few states which are reporting a higher contribution to India's caseload and a higher positivity rate."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Centre advised all states and UTs to follow a risk assessment based approach on the opening of economic and social activities without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a two-page communication, the country's Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said, "It has been observed that Kerala has reported its State-level COVID-19 data after a gap of five days [since April 13]."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Responding to that, Kerala's State Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday (April 19) said that they have been sending the daily Covid figures through e-mail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Such a thing has not happened at all and we all are surprised on how the Centre can say such a thing, when everyday we have been sending the daily Covid figures through e-mail. The Centre is propagating false things," said George and added there were around 200 new cases on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Union health ministry requested for daily updation of the required details in the letter to the Kerala Principal Secretary, Health Rajan N. Khobragade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter noted that the daily and diligent reporting of data is critical to arrive at a meaningful understanding of the pandemic at the district, state and national level and ensure that any anomalies, surge or emerging trends can be captured in a timely manner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Quick and continuous update of data will assist in India`s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and will help not only in tracking and monitoring but will also help in defining the strategies and plans at the Centre, State and District level," Agarwal further said in the letter.&nbsp;</p>

COVID-19 in India: Expert weighs in on reports of fourth wave

<p>Novavax announced on Tuesday (March 22) that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted its coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine emergency-use authorisation for children aged 12 to 17 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement published on its website, the company noted that DCGI has granted emergency use authorisation (EUA) for Novavax jabs for adolescents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The vaccine, also known as NVX-CoV2373, is manufactured and marketed in India by SII [Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd.] under the brand name Covovax™ and is the first protein-based vaccine authorized for use in this age group in India," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>DCGI has issued permission for restricted use in an emergency situation for Covovax for active immunisation to prevent Covid caused by SARS-CoV-2 in individuals 12 years of age and older.</p>

<p>In a statement, the health ministry said, "Union Government after due deliberations with scientific bodies has decided to start COVID19 vaccination for 12-13 yr and 13-14 yr age groups (those born in 2008, 2009 and 2010. i.e those who are already above 12 years of age) of the population from 16th March 2022."&nbsp;</p>

His comments can be loosely translated in English as: "If the children are safe then the country is safe! I am happy to inform you that the COVID-19 vaccination of children in the age group of 12 to 13 and 13 to 14 is starting from March 16. Also, everyone aged 60+ will now be able to get precaution doses."&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, India has been vaccinating children aged 15 and above and according to government figures, more than 90 million children aged between 15 and 17 have been inoculated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A yellow alert came&nbsp;into effect in India's national capital on Tuesday&nbsp;which mean all non-essential activities have been closed and a curfew imposed from 10 pm to 5 am.&nbsp;</p>

<p>UAE has also seen an increase in coronavirus cases with over COVID-19 1800 cases being reported recently even as mega Dubai Expo faces closure as cases have spiked.</p>

<p>PM Modi&nbsp;during his one-day visit on January 6&nbsp;was expected to visit Dubai Expo and sign the India-UAE free trade agreement. At the Dubai Expo, he was to visit the "India Pavillion" which showcases India's culture, Yoga, Ayurveda to Space programme.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and UAE have a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership"&nbsp;and have seen increased engagement at every level. &nbsp;</p>

<p>PM Modi had visited the West Asian country in 2015, 2018 and 2019. UAE has conferred the highest civilian award 'the Order of Zayed’ to PM Modi.</p>

<p>Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, (MBZ) Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, visited India in February 2016. MBZ visited India again in January&nbsp;2017 as the chief guest at India’s Republic day celebrations.</p>

<p>The Indian diaspora forms a deep connection as the UAE hosts one of the largest populations of Indians. The Indian expatriate community of approx. 3.3 million is the largest ethnic community in UAE constituting roughly about 30 per cent of the country’s population.</p>

<p>Among the Indian states, Kerala is the most represented followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Indians from the northern states also form a significant portion of the UAE Indian population.</p>

<p>India's prime minister will also not be going to Kuwait&nbsp;as was being reported earlier. The last high-level visit from India to the country was by external affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in June.</p>

<p>In their study, the researchers used data from countries such as the US, UK, Germany, and Russia that are already facing the third COVID-19 wave.</p>

<p>They modelled the daily data of cases in these countries to predict the impact and timeline for the third wave in India.</p>

<p>The study also used the data from the first and second waves in India, considering the number of cases with respect to time.</p>

<p>The model forecasts India's third wave of COVID-19 to peak in the beginning of February 2022.</p>

<p>"The cases start rising around 15 December 2021 and the peak of the third wave will occur on Thursday, 3 February 2022,"&nbsp;they wrote in the research paper.</p>

<p>The research team comprised of Sabara Parshad Rajeshbhai, Subhra Sankar Dhar, and Shalabh, all from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at IIT Kanpur.</p>

<p>The authors noted that the vaccination campaign by the union government is a good initiative but it will take some time to reach "100 per cent efficacy".</p>

<p>"In many countries like the US, UK, Germany, Russia, the majority of the people have been vaccinated but still they are currently facing the third wave," the authors explained.</p>

<p>"So, India and other countries have to build up the defences and be prepared for another wave so that it is not as devastating as the earlier ones," they added.</p>

<p>According to the National COVID-19 Supermodel Committee, the third wave of COVID-19 is expected to peak in early next year but would be milder than the second wave.</p>

<p>The members of the committee said last week that daily caseload in India is expected to increase once Omicron starts displacing Delta as the dominant variant.</p>

<p>India on Friday recorded 122 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in a span of 24 hours, the highest so far, pushing its tally in the country to 358.</p>

IIT-Kanpur study tells when third COVID-19 wave in India may peak

From oxygen supply to Omicron threat: 10 key highlights of PM Narendra Modi's Covid review meeting

<p>India's overall tally has now crossed 24 million and there are signs of a peak but the chain hasn't been broken as the country has reported more than 300,000 new infections in a day.</p>

<p>There is also Covaxin, Sputnik, Bio-e, Zydus Cadila and a Pfizer-like shot from Gennova. A nasal vaccine from Bharat Biotech is also being created by the same company that is making Covaxin.</p>

<p>India could have more than two billion doses by the end of this year clubbed together which is the projection. The government expects the new supplies to start arriving by August.</p>

<p>Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced a <strong>lockdown</strong> in the state till May 15 due to escalating coronavirus cases.</p>

All state government offices to remain closed, excluding essential services such as district administration, civil defence etc and<strong> essential shops</strong>," the state's chief secretary said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile in Chandigarh, authorities said night curfew will continue from 6 pm to 5 am every day along with complete weekend curfew. Restricted movement will be allowed from 5pm on May 4 to 5am on May 11, with only essentials shops allowed to remain open. Home delivery is allowed up to 9 pm and takeaways till 5pm.</p>

<p>The central government said a streamlined mechanism for allocation of support supplies received by India has been put into place for effective distribution of the <strong>medical </strong>and other relief and support material.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid the pandemic, the Indian defence forces have stepped in. The<strong> Indian Air Force (IAF) </strong>has set up a 100-bed COVID-19 treatment facility at Air Force Station Jalahalli to be operational from May 6 with 20 beds and&nbsp;oxygen concentrators.</p>

<p>There will also be 10 ICU beds and 40 beds with piped oxygen, 50 beds with oxygen concentrators, it added.</p>

<p>As many as 14 offences were registered at various police stations.</p>

<p>Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B said the response to the lockdown was good on the first day.</p>

<p>"Movement of people was not affected, only unwanted movement is being restricted," the civic chief told PTI.</p>

<p>As many as 99 checkpoints have been set up across Nagpur and eight on the city's border.</p>

<p>Besides, 99 patrolling vehicles, two companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), six platoons of the Riot Control Police and 500 Home Guards have been deployed for the implementation of the lockdown, said the commissioner.</p>

<p>Only one person is allowed to travel on a two-wheeler and two persons in a four-wheeler.</p>

<p>Two persons are permitted on a two-wheeler if they are heading to a hospital or going for vaccination, he said.</p>

<p>Local residents are allowed to travel to other cities as per the guidelines laid down by the district administration.</p>

<p>Passenger and goods vehicles going out or passing through Nagpur city are allowed to travel via the Outer Ring Road.</p>

<p>The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court will conduct hearings through video-conference till March 21.</p>

<p>Maharashtra leads all the states with a weekly positivity rate of 10.02 per cent, the ministry said.</p>

<p>India's total COVID-19 active caseload stands at 1,68,358 as the country added 12,286 new cases in a span of 24 hours. The country's present active caseload now consists of 1.51 per cent of India's total infections.</p>

<p>The ministry said 80.33 per cent of the new cases are from five states.</p>

<p>Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily new cases at 6,397. It is followed by Kerala with 1,938 while Punjab reported 633 new cases.</p>

<p>The Centre is continuously engaging with the states and UTs manifesting higher caseload of active cases and those reporting a rise in the daily new COVID-19 cases.</p>

<p>"They have been advised to maintain a continued rigorous vigil for containing the spread of COVID-19. Need for effective testing, comprehensive tracking, prompt isolation of positive cases and quick quarantine of close contacts are strongly emphasized," the ministry said.</p>

<p>"Eight states are displaying an upward trajectory in daily new cases," it highlighted.</p>
