A team of UK researchers have developed a beard covering technique for the bearded medical workers of the Sikh community to ensure that the Sikh doctors and medical experts do not have to trim their beards while catering to the needs of the patients.

The new technique has been launched by a team&nbsp;led by Professor Gurch Randhawa from the University of Bedfordshire and Dr. Rajinder Pal Singh. The idea stuck the team after concerns of providing proper protective kit to the doctors of the minority community during the coronavirus pandemic.

This new innovation will allow Sikh doctors to wear a&nbsp;well-fitting respirator mask without having to shave off their beard — which the community doesn't trim due to religious reasons.

"Because shaving was a mandatory pre-requisite for wearing respirator masks, many members of the faith-observant bearded community, such as Sikh, Jewish and Muslim, have been affected and have had to face the dilemma of redeployment from frontline healthcare jobs involving exposure to COVID-19," Randhawa said.

Recalling two incidents where top officials have been declined various offers due to the need of wearing a respirator or&nbsp;gas-mask fitting mask, Randhawa said this innovation was long-time due. "In both of these scenarios, the common theme was that the beard was considered to be an impediment to the wearing of a respirator mask. The other common principle was the concern for the health and safety of the employee. There was no alternative choice, or maybe, it was unexplored," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rajinder Pal Singh, who is based out of&nbsp;Manchester, also pitched the idea of having an under-mask beard cover, commonly known as 'thattha’, which can allow allow him to wear an FFP3 respirator mask. This innovative way of wearing an essential PPE for frontline medics of the minority communities was approved in the&nbsp;qualitative Fit Test by the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

"In the current pandemic, for safety reasons, these masks are mandatory for healthcare workers exposed to aerosol generating procedures (AGPs) involving COVID-19. Wearing these masks requires a person to be clean-shaven to allow for a robust face-mask seal. There is no evidence to suggest why, instead of shaving, the facial hair factor cannot be overcome with an under-mask beard cover," Dr. Singh said.

"The concerns for safety, as highlighted by Kamala Harris in 2005, for bearded men to fit a gas-mask for industrial reasons, as well as in 2020 for COVID-19 healthcare reasons now seem to be addressed timely by the ‘Singh Thattha’ technique," he added.

It has been almost a year since the coronavirus pandemic took over the world and affected millions of lives around the globe. While the world is getting used to the new normal now and hoping for a coronavirus vaccine as soon as possible, Russian scientists have discovered another version of the virus.

A Russian consumer health watchdog has recently observed mutations in the coronavirus in Siberia.&nbsp;“We see certain changes...in Siberia which allow us to assume that in this region it is forming its own version with specific mutations,” Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, was quoted as saying by news agencies.

However, the scientists have not yet released details about this mutation and the new version of the novel coronavirus. As of now, it is not clear how contagious or deadly the mutation is considered to be. Although, it is being believed that this mutation will not make the virus more dangerous.&nbsp;Mutations of the coronavirus could not influence the vaccine’s effectiveness, the Vector Institute’s director general, Rinat Maksyutov, was quoted as saying by TASS.

This claim has come a few months after a US study had found very little evidence of mutations in this virus could make it deadlier. The report had claimed, in September, that the disease caused by the coronavirus was linked to the patients' existing medical conditions.

The new report, released on Tuesday, has come at a time when Russia has started the final phase of testing of the COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, which is being hailed as world's first coronavirus vaccine. Countries such as India have started the Phase 2 human trials, while a few others have started the Phase 3 trial on human beings.

Meanwhile, Russia is struggling to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The European country recorded nearly 442 deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday. People have been advised to stay home as much as they can and only step out in case of emergencies with proper precautions.

Coronavirus mutations appearing in Siberia: Russian scientists

While a face mask might feel uncomfortable, researchers have said that they do not significantly change the actual work of breathing or the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide when worn while exercising.

The physical barrier created by masks has prompted concerns that they might impair the cardiopulmonary system by making it harder to breathe, by altering the flow of inhaled oxygen and exhaled carbon dioxide and by increasing dyspnea.

Dyspnea is a medical term that describes shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, especially during physical activity.

In a new study, published in the journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society, the research team concluded that while sensations of dyspnea might increase, there is little empirical evidence that wearing a face mask significantly diminishes lung function, even when worn during heavy exercise.

"There might be a perceived greater effort with activity, but the effects of wearing a mask on the work of breathing, on gases like oxygen and CO2 in blood or other physiological parameters are small, often too small to be detected," said the study author Susan Hopkins from University of California San Diego in the US.

The researchers came to their conclusions following a review of all known scientific literature published that examined the effects of various face masks and respiratory loading devices on physiological and perceptual responses to physical activity.

These studies assessed multiple factors, such as work of breathing (the quantified energy expended to inhale and exhale), arterial blood gases, effects on muscle blood flow and fatigue, cardiac function and flow of blood to the brain.

For healthy persons, the effects of wearing a mask on these physiological markers were minimal, no matter what type of mask was worn or the degree of exercise.

The authors also said age played no significant influencing role among adults. Gender differences were deemed inconsequential.

"Wearing a face mask can be uncomfortable. There can be tiny increases in breathing resistance. You may re-inhale warmer, slightly enriched CO2 air. And if you`re exercising, the mask can cause your face to become hot and sweaty," Hopkins said.

"But these are sensory perceptions. They do not impact cardiopulmonary function in healthy people," Hopkins added.

"So while dyspnea might be increased with a mask, you have to weigh that against the reduced risk of contracting COVID-19, knowing that the physiology is essentially unchanged," she noted.

Masks don't impair lung function during exercise: Study

A growing number of South Korean women are training to be morticians, a field from which they had long been excluded, amid changing views on gender roles and a rising preference for women’s bodies to be handled by women.

With recent deaths of female celebrities and prominent figures, as well as growing scrutiny of sex crimes against women, gender sensitivity is changing the way families of the deceased bid farewell to their grandmothers, mothers and daughters.

“I felt uncomfortable when my classmates of a different sex touched my body, even when I was fully dressed,” said Park Se-jung, 19, who is in her second year of funeral directing studies. “I sure wouldn’t want them to touch, wash and dress my naked body even if I were dead. I am determined I should be the one bidding those women a proper farewell.”

The trend comes amid growing calls for crackdowns of sexual violence against women, including a rash of hidden-camera crimes, “revenge porn”, and online networks that blackmailed women and girls into sharing sexual and sometimes violent images of themselves.

In the early 2000s, about a third of mortician students in the country were women, but today they make up around 60% of the class, said Lee Jong-woo, a professor of embalming at Eulji University in Seongnam near Seoul.

“With Confucian ideology, death was considered a taboo in South Korea in the past, and had negative perceptions of whether women could handle such work, but the perception has been changing,” Lee said.

Young deaths

Funeral companies say they have been receiving more requests for female morticians.

“Most of the deaths of young people are suicides, and the families of the bereaved, especially if it was suicide and a woman, feel more comfortable if we handle the body,” said Park Bo-ram, a funeral director of seven years.

“I recall a teenaged student, an only child ... had committed suicide,” Park said. “Washing and dressing the body, I saw many signs of self-injury on her thigh, but none of her family knew.”

Park recalls that the girl’s parents were immensely grateful, even in the midst of sadness, that a female mortician handled their daughter’s body.

South Korea’s suicide rate is the highest in the developed world: 24.6 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019, compared with an OECD average of 11.3. That year, it was the No. 1 cause of death among teenagers and people in their 20s and 30s.

More than 4,000 women committed suicide in 2019, including young female K-pop artists Koo Hara and Sulli.

In 2016, a quarter of the country’s 6,200 funeral directors were women, and with more than 130,000 girls and women dying each year, requests for female funeral directors are expected to rise further, Korea Employment Information Service said.

Yet some resistance to women in the mortuary business remains.

Shin Hwa-jin, 21, who plans to work at a funeral home after graduation, said she was shocked to hear a female mortician relate a conversation with her mother-in-law.

“Her mother-in-law asked her: ‘How dare you think of cooking my meals with the hands that touched a dead body?’” she said.

Not more than 50 people can attend wedding functions during lockdown in Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal

After the Diwali weekend and Bhai Dooj celebrations came to an end, India recorded more than 30 per cent jump in new cases of COVID-19 with 38,617 new cases reported in past 24 hours pushing the cumulative the tally to 89,12,907, data from the Union Health Ministry showed on Wednesday.

The toll rose to 1,30,993 with 474 more deaths in one day. The number of active cases stood at 4,46,805.

As many as 83,35,109 people have recovered from the disease so far.

On Tuesday, India reported 29,164 new COVID-19 cases and 449 deaths. The figure for Wednesday is almost 32 per cent more in the single-day spike.

However, the reason could be a rise in the testing as total 9,37,279 samples were tested on Tuesday after a long weekend of testing eight lakh samples on an average, testing data from the Indian Council of Medical Research showed.

The situation of Covid-19 in Delhi-NCR remained grim. The latest surge has left the healthcare system gasping for relief. The hospital, both government and private hospitals have 10 per cent ICU beds with ventilators, which are extremely crucial for patients with severity.

Apart from severe patients, patients with moderate symptoms are made to wait hours before admission in hospitals. Besides, non-Covid patients are running from pillar to post just to acquire a single hospital bed in the capital city.

The situation has forced the Delhi government to reconsider imposing restrictions it lifted months ago. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sent a proposal to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and the Centre to consider allowing only 50 people to attend weddings and imposing lockdown in market areas which may emerge as hotspots.

Besides, the district administration of Gautam Budh Nagar decided to randomly test commuters going to Noida from Delhi for the coronavirus from Wednesday. The decision has come amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the capital.

Globally, the coronavirus has infected more than 5.55 crore people and killed 13,36,892, according to Johns Hopkins University.

A team of scientists have recently revealed that a range of chemicals found in daily-use products&nbsp;could hinder the effectiveness and success of the COVID-19 vaccine.

As per some recent reports, our day-to-day commodities such as pans, pots, pizza boxes and waterproof clothing have small amounts of man-made chemicals called&nbsp;polyfluoroalkyl, also known as PFAS. These chemicals could negatively affect the effect of COVID-19 vaccine.

These chemicals are man-made and have earlier also shown hints of increasing risks of liver damage, cancer and decreased fertility in human beings. Now, the scientists have discovered that there might be a possibility these chemicals could hinder the effectiveness of the vaccine that is supposed to protect the humans from one of the deadliest viruses in the world.

"At this stage we don’t know if it will impact a corona vaccination, but it’s a risk,"&nbsp;said Philippe Grandjean, an adjunct professor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health. "We would have to cross our fingers and hope for the best."

As per the initial research, it has been found that children who were exposed to these chemicals had reduced antibodies concentrations when they were administered with vaccines of&nbsp;tetanus and diphtheria. The same results were observed by another follow-up study on the matter.

The researchers also found out that a certain type of PFAS&nbsp;called perfluorobutyrate (or PFBA) can increase the risk and severity of the deadly virus as this chemical can accumulate in the lungs. However, the study proving the same, is yet to be peer-reviewed.

"People with high exposure to PFAS have a non-protective and very low antibody levels after four vaccinations for diphtheria and tetanus,"&nbsp;Grandjean said. "So if a vaccine for Covid is similar, the PFAS will likely inhibit the response from a vaccine. But it is an unknown at this stage,"

A team of scientists have recently revealed that a range of chemicals found in daily-use products could hinder the effectiveness and success of the COVID-19 vaccine. As per some recent reports, our day-to-day commodities such as pans, pots, pizza boxes and waterproof clothing have small amounts of man-made chemicals called polyfluoroalkyl, also known as PFAS. These chemicals could negatively affect the effect of COVID-19 vaccine. ALso read| Chinese citizen journalist who uncovered COVID-19 truth faces possibility of jail time: Reports These chemicals are man-made and have earlier also shown hints of increasing risks of liver damage, cancer and decreased fertility in human beings. Now, the scientists have discovered that there might be a possibility these chemicals could hinder the effectiveness of the vaccine that is supposed to protect the humans from one of the deadliest viruses in the world. "At this stage we don’t know if it will impact a corona vaccination, but it’s a risk," said Philippe Grandjean, an adjunct professor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health. "We would have to cross our fingers and hope for the best." The district prosecutors are now alleging her of fabricating information related to the novel coronavirus which has affected millions of lives all around the world since the end of 2019. "She is now being accused of fabricating malicious and false information about the coronavirus pandemic in Wuhan and accepting interviews with overseas media," a source revealed.

There are also fears that she will be punished with maximum penalty, as the prosecutors are now also citing her alleged previous offences from 2018 and 2019.

Zhan, who is currently in a detention centre in Shanghai, has resumed eating food on regular basis. The citizen journalist had earlier gone on a hunger strike in the second month of her arrest, claiming she will break the strike only if she is released unconditionally. "She was initially being force-fed and put on drips when she first started the hunger strike as she demanded to be released unconditionally," the source revealed. At that time, her cell-mates were being asked to force-feed her. However, later, she resumed consuming food on her own.

She was arrested after she travelled to Wuhan, where the coronavirus allegedly began and live-streamed the condition of the city through her social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook. She also penned down an article criticising the way the outbreak was handled by the Chinese government and raised the question of whether the censorship in the severity of the outbreak was intentional by Xi's government.

Following the live streaming and the reports, Zhan was arrested by the Shanghai Police on May 15, but was officially charged three months later, citing concerns about her safety and well-being. Now, in addition to allegedly generating fale information, she is also being charged&nbsp;for “picking quarrels” and “disrupting public order" — two offences from&nbsp;April and November 2019 respectively&nbsp;and&nbsp;for allegedly inciting subversion — an accusation from August 2018.

If proven guilty, she could face a jail term for four to five years.

In addition to Zhan, three other citizen journalists —&nbsp;Li Zehua, Chen Qiushi and Fang Bin — have also been detained by the Chinese government on the allegation of generating false information, after they live-streamed the condition of the country during the pandemic, and questioned the government's motives.

Chinese citizen journalist who uncovered COVID-19 truth faces possibility of jail time: Reports

A new study led by researchers at the Queen Mary University of London uses a novel approach to investigate the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Several observational studies have reported the link between cardiovascular risk factors (such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol) and COVID-19 severity. However, these studies could not ascertain the cause and effect relationship due to the observational design.

The new study, published in the science journal Frontiers in Genetics, used a novel approach called 'Mendelian Randomisation', which leveraged on the individual genetic information, to investigate the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Lead author Dr Nay Aung from the Queen Mary University of London said: "Our results show that individuals with high body mass index (BMI), a marker of obesity, and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (also known as 'bad' cholesterol) are at an increased risk of getting COVID-19. Other cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure and diabetes) do not appear to elevate the COVID-19 risk.

"Our findings support the use of BMI and LDL cholesterol as important metrics alongside other known characteristics (such as age and ethnicity) in the risk assessment of vulnerability to COVID-19 infection."

The findings may have an impact on public health policy, whereby those who fall in the at-risk obese category or those with extreme hyperlipidemia in the general population may require more rigorous social distancing or shielding.

Furthermore, studies assessing the role of cholesterol modification therapy during illness or hospital admission could be undertaken to assess the potential impact on outcomes.

Netflix's 'Dear White People' halts production after multiple positive COVID-19 tests

External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar on Monday lauded India's COVID-19 response, saying that it should give people confidence in the country's future.

Speaking at the third edition of Deccan Dialogue, Jaishankar said: "A nation that had no preparedness for an enormous crisis, responded in a way that it should give us all confidence in our future."

The minister said during the onset of a pandemic, India was not able to provide enough PPEs and ventilators. Even N-95 masks were assembled in small quantities and testing kits were not produced in the country. "We should ask ourselves why not earlier, today not only (India) meets its national needs but helps beyond."

He also stated that during the ongoing pandemic situation, the social discipline in India stood out in comparison with many developed countries, which was the influence of leadership and motivation.

"If we had created more than 15,000 dedicated facilities, with 1.5 million isolation beds, if more than a million Indians are tested daily by 7,000 centres, if Aarogya Setu was devised to facilitate contract testing, then it speaks volumes about our inherent capabilities," Jaishankar said.

He further added: "The challenge now is to take this ability to rise to the moment of crisis and transform that to more routine sets of practices and procedures, and I do believe that the India which will come out of the Covid crisis, will do just that."

The External Affairs Minister also spoke on the Vande Bharat mission, informing that nearly 24 lakh Indians have been repatriated from foreign nations.

"From Air India to the Indian Navy we pressed all our resources to achieve this goal. The intention was very simple, today's India will not leave an Indian abroad in distress," he added.

Jaishankar also commented on issues of climate change and state-sponsored terrorism during his keynote address.

A report by Microsoft revealed that hackers for the Russian and North Korean governments have targeted more than half a dozen of organisations involved in the COVID-19 treatment and vaccine research from around the globe.

In this report by Microsoft, the tech giant stated that a Russian hacking group, known as 'Fancy Bear', and a pair of North Korean actors called "Zinc" and "Cerium", by Microsoft, were implicated as they tried to break into the networks of nearly seven&nbsp;pharmaceutical companies and vaccine researchers in fice countries, namely, Canada, France, India, South Korea, and the United States.

While the majority of the break-in attempts failed, a few unspecified numbers of attempts succeeded. Majority of these attacks were aimed at medical organisations that were involved in the process of testing the COVID-19 vaccine. However, Microsoft has declined to publically identify the companies that were targetted by Rusian and North Korean hackers. The software company has also refused to provide a timeline of these attacks.

The Russian embassy in Washington, however, has declined all such accusations in the past. This time, too, the officials said there was "nothing that we can add" to the previous statements of denials.

This report came as several countries in the world are competing to produce and distribute the first COVID-19 vaccine to the world, as a lot of countries have now stepped into the second wave of coronavirus.

Microsoft also urged that a new&nbsp;set of global rules and regulations barring digital intrusions aimed at healthcare providers should be set up.

Microsoft executive Tom Burt said in a statement his company was timing its announcement with Microsoft President Brad Smith's appearance at the virtual Paris Peace Forum, where he would call on world leaders "to affirm that international law protects health care facilities and to take action to enforce the law."

Israel signed a deal with Pfizer Inc on Friday to receive 8 million doses of the drugmaker`s potential COVID-19 vaccine, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, enough to cover close to half of Israel`s population.

Pfizer and German partner BioNTech SE confirmed a deal was forthcoming in a statement on Thursday but did not disclose financial details. There was no immediate comment from the two companies on Friday.

The agreement still requires approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Israel's health ministry, Israeli Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said. Pfizer is expected to apply for approval this month, he added.

Pfizer`s potential vaccine is likely to be a two-dose course of treatment, meaning that 8 million doses would cover 4 million of Israel`s 9 million population.
In televised remarks, Netanyahu said the agreement marked "a great day for Israel" and added: "The goal is for the vaccine supply to start in January and increase in the months thereafter".

Pfizer on Monday announced that its experimental COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective based on initial trial results, a potential major victory in the war against a virus that has killed more than a million people and battered the world economy.

In addition to its new deal with Pfizer, Israel has an agreement with Moderna Inc for the future purchase of its potential vaccine. Moderna said on Wednesday it had enough data for a first interim analysis of the late-stage trial of its vaccine candidate.

The coronavirus pandemic may have shut Czech theatres for now but some Prague residents hungry for entertainment have found that watching a live performance can be as easy as grabbing a takeaway.

Prague troupe Cirk La Putyka has opened a “Culture Window” at a Prague marketplace building where an audience of up to four outside can watch a five-minute live show of music, acrobatics and dancing inside, while still observing social distancing rules.

The window, which opened on Tuesday for two nights of performances, draws its inspiration from pick-up windows for food orders at restaurants that have also been forced to shut dining spaces due to tighter restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“This performance is for live culture addicts. They will get a dose of live culture here,” Cirk La Putyka director Rostislav Novak said.

The show starts after theatre staff lead the spectators to the window and a gong sounds to open the curtain.

Tickets for the bite-sized performances - offered for free although people are asked to donate to the group - quickly disappeared after going up on the group’s website.

Those lucky to get tickets said it was a reminder of what people are missing in this time of lockdown restrictions.

“It is impossible to compare a live performance to television,” said one attendee, Kristyna Fendrychova. “You feel the difference and a person really misses it.”

Production on the second season of Netflix’s The Witcher has been put on hold temporarily after several members of the production unit on the fantasy epic series were tested positive for the coronavirus.

Based on the series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher follows the story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

Henry Cavill leads the cast as Geralt of Rivia, alongside Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri.

According to Deadline, four cases were confirmed on Saturday and the streamer will carry out an isolated round of testing of everyone involved in the show.

Those impacted have been isolated and are not among lead cast, the publication noted.

Filming at Arborfield Studios, west of London, is due to resume once Netflix is confident that the set is fully safe.
This is the second time filming has had to pause on the second season of the drama after actor Kristofer Hivju revealed he had tested positive back in March.

That pause stretched to mid-August as the UK went into lockdown over the spring.

COVID-19: India records 50,356 cases; recovery rate stands at 92.41%

As the European countries are going into a second lockdown due to the fears of a second wave of the novel coronavirus, a study has found out that the deadly virus has been spread to the whole world from Europe.

Scientists of the&nbsp;UK’s University of Huddersfield and Portugal’s University of Minho analysed the genetic sequence of 27,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes and concluded that the novel coronavirus may have started from China, but Europe sure is responsible for spreading it to the other parts of the world.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-election-2020-result-live-updates-biden-echoes-message-of-unity-as-vote-counts-show-him-leading-in-key-states-341275">US election 2020 result LIVE updates: Biden echoes message of unity as vote counts show him leading in key states</a>

The study was published in an edition of the scientific journal&nbsp;Microorganisms.

"Whilst the source of Covid-19 was clearly in China, the spread of the global pandemic during the first six months was largely fueled by the expansion in Europe,” state the authors in their paper, adding that travel restrictions in the continent were “too little and too late."

This claim has come as the total deaths due to coronavirus in Europe crossed the mark of&nbsp;300,000 and the number of infections crossed the mark of 12 million. Brazil became the third worst-hit country with more than&nbsp;161,736 coronavirus-deaths in the country followed by&nbsp;Mexico with 93,772 deaths. Meanwhile, France and Italy have initiated a second lockdown in their countries following a surge in the coronavirus cases. Greece, too, is initiating a temporary shutdown of&nbsp;secondary schools as the country is entering a second lockdown.

The UK, too, has entered a phase of the second lockdown after a controversial and criticised tiered system of lockdown failed to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Researchers of the two institutes found out that although Europe closed its borders to outsiders in March itself, the countries did allow people to move within the contient, leading to widespread of the virus in the continent, which later spread it to other parts of the world as people started travelling.

As the European countries are going into a second lockdown due to the fears of a second wave of the novel coronavirus, a study has found out that the deadly virus has been spread to the whole world from Europe. Scientists of the UK’s University of Huddersfield and Portugal’s University of Minho analysed the genetic sequence of 27,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes and concluded that the novel coronavirus may have started from China, but Europe sure is responsible for spreading it to the other parts of the world. US election 2020 result LIVE updates: Biden echoes message of unity as vote counts show him leading in key states The study was published in an edition of the scientific journal Microorganisms. "Whilst the source of Covid-19 was clearly in China, the spread of the global pandemic during the first six months was largely fueled by the expansion in Europe,” state the authors in their paper, adding that travel restrictions in the continent were “too little and too late." This claim has come as the total deaths due to coronavirus in Europe crossed the mark of 300,000 and the number of infections crossed the mark of 12 million. Brazil became the third worst-hit country with more than 161,736 coronavirus-deaths in the country followed by Mexico with 93,772 deaths. Meanwhile, France and Italy have initiated a second lockdown in their countries following a surge in the coronavirus cases. Greece, too, is initiating a temporary shutdown of secondary schools as the country is entering a second lockdown. Also read| Biden addresses US, vows action against coronavirus The UK, too, has entered a phase of the second lockdown after a controversial and criticised tiered system of lockdown failed to contain the spread of coronavirus. Researchers of the two institutes found out that although Europe closed its borders to outsiders in March itself, the countries did allow people to move within the contient, leading to widespread of the virus in the continent, which later spread it to other parts of the world as people started travelling. "We highlighted how some (countries) were more effective than others in slowing down the spread, but also by unequivocally demonstrating that none were wholly effective in halting the spread," the researchers said. Donald Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, tests positive for coronavirus: Reports

A nasal spray that blocks the absorption of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has completely protected ferrets it was tested on, according to a small study released Thursday by an international team of scientists. The study, which was limited to animals and has not yet been peer-reviewed, was assessed by several health experts at the request of The New York Times.

If the spray, which the scientists described as nontoxic and stable, is proved to work in humans, it could provide a new way of fighting the pandemic. A daily spritz up the nose would act like a vaccine.

“Having something new that works against the coronavirus is exciting,” said Dr. Arturo Casadevall, the chairman of immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who was not involved in the study. “I could imagine this being part of the arsenal.”

The work has been underway for months by scientists from Columbia University Medical Center in New York, Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Columbia University Medical Center.

The team would require additional funding to pursue clinical trials in humans. Dr. Anne Moscona, a paediatrician and microbiologist at Columbia and co-author of the study, said they had applied for a patent on the product, and she hoped Columbia University would approach the federal government’s Operation Warp Speed or large pharmaceutical companies that are seeking new ways to combat the coronavirus.

The spray attacks the virus directly. It contains a lipopeptide, a cholesterol particle linked to a chain of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. This particular lipopeptide exactly matches a stretch of amino acids in the spike protein of the virus, which the pathogen uses to attach to a human airway or lung cell.

Before a virus can inject its RNA into a cell, the spike must effectively unzip, exposing two chains of amino acids, in order to fuse to the cell wall. As the spike zips back up to complete the process, the lipopeptide in the spray inserts itself, latching on to one of the spike’s amino acid chains and preventing the virus from attaching.

“It is like you are zipping a zipper but you put another zipper inside, so the two sides cannot meet,” said Matteo Porotto, a microbiologist at Columbia University and one of the paper’s authors.

The work was described in a paper posted to the preprint server bioRxiv Thursday morning, and has been submitted to the journal Science for peer review.

Dr. Peter J. Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, said the therapy looked “really promising.”

“What I’d like to know now is how easy it is to scale production,” he said.

In the study, the spray was given to six ferrets, which were then divided into pairs and placed in three cages. Into each cage also went two ferrets that had been given a placebo spray and one ferret that had been deliberately infected with SARS-CoV-2 a day or two earlier.

Ferrets are used by scientists studying flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome and other respiratory diseases because they can catch viruses through the nose much as humans do, although they also infect each other by contact with feces or by scratching and biting.

After 24 hours together, none of the sprayed ferrets caught the disease; all the placebo-group ferrets did.

“Virus replication was completely blocked,” the authors wrote.

The protective spray attaches to cells in the nose and lungs and lasts about 24 hours, Moscona said. “If it works this well in humans, you could sleep in a bed with someone infected or be with your infected kids and still be safe,” she said.

The amino acids come from a stretch of the spike protein in coronaviruses that rarely mutates. The scientists tested it against four different variants of the virus, including both the well-known “Wuhan” and “Italian” strains, and also against the coronaviruses that cause SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome.

In cell cultures, it protected completely against all strains of the pandemic virus, fairly well against SARS and partially against MERS.

The lipoprotein can be inexpensively produced as a freeze-dried white powder that does not need refrigeration, Moscona said. A doctor or pharmacist could mix the powder with sugar and water to produce a nasal spray.

Monoclonal antibodies to the new coronavirus have been shown to prevent infection as well as treat it, but they are expensive to make, require refrigeration and must be injected. Australian scientists have tested a nasal spray against COVID-19 in ferrets, but it works by enhancing the immune system, not by targeting the virus directly.

Because lipopeptides can be shipped as a dry powder, they could be used even in rural areas in poor countries that lack refrigeration, Moscona said.

Moscona, a pediatrician who usually works on parainfluenza and other viruses that infect children, said she was most interested in getting the product to poor countries that may never have access to the monoclonal antibodies and mRNA vaccines that Americans may soon have. But she has little experience in that arena, she said.

“I’ve always been a basic scientist,” she said. “I’ve never done drug development or taken anything to the FDA or anything like that.”

India's COVID-19 vaccine to be ready by February: Sources

China has imposed fresh travel bans on non-Chinese arrivals from Britain and Belgium, as it guards against a resurgence of the coronavirus by refusing entry to people from two of Europe's worst-hit nations.

Covid-19 first emerged in central China late last year, but Beijing has largely brought its own outbreak under control through tight travel restrictions and stringent health measures for anyone entering the country.

In March, as the virus ripped across the world, China shut its borders to all foreign nationals.

It gradually eased those restrictions to allow those stranded overseas to return with special permission from its embassies, negative Covid-19 tests and a two-week quarantine on arrival.

But in a sharp reversal as the outbreak once more billows out across Europe, the Chinese embassy in the UK said Beijing had "decided to temporarily suspend entry into China by non-Chinese nationals".&nbsp;

"The suspension is a temporary response necessitated by the current situation of Covid-19," it said Wednesday.

The Chinese embassy website in Belgium announced a similar ban on travellers as a "last resort in response to the current pandemic".&nbsp;

The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately reply to an AFP request for comment.

The UK, one of the world's hardest hit countries with nearly 48,000 deaths linked to the virus and more than one million cases, has entered a new nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Belgium, which has the most Covid-19 cases per capita in the world, has been in lockdown since last week.

The websites of Chinese embassies in other European countries were not carrying similar notices on Thursday morning, and citizens of these countries with visas are able to travel to China, subject to conditions.

Beijing has recently tightened requirements for travellers from several countries, making entry much more difficult.

These requirements include the presentation of a health certificate from the local Chinese embassy showing the results of a nucleic acid test and an antibody test -- within 48 hours of travel.

The new rules apply to travellers from countries including France, India, Singapore, Canada, Germany, Pakistan, South Africa and the US.

The strict two-test entry requirement and short time frame have sparked complaints.

The European Chamber of Commerce in China said the measures were "a de facto ban on anyone trying to get back to their lives, work and families in China".

Beijing bars arrivals from UK, Belgium due to second COVID-19 waves

As the UK went into another nationwide lockdown, Britain's roads were flooded with vehicles causing traffic jams of nearly&nbsp;1,200 miles.

The capital city of Britain, London, recorded nearly&nbsp;2,624 traffic jams in the city within a few hours. The city was deadlocked as people started to flee the capital to head out to different locations of the country where the lockdown regulations are not as strict as London.

Various locals from the city took to Twitter to report miles-long traffic jams, and some even claimed that they were stuck in jams for more than 90 minutes, especially the motorists. Some people also labelled this as one of the worst traffic rush in decades. "Tonight’s traffic in south London was the worst I have ever, ever seen, in 3 decades of riding it," a Twitter user said. One user revealed that it took them nearly two hours to cover a distance of five miles.

The scenario was similar in other parts of the UK, too, with an increase of&nbsp;6 per cent&nbsp;in Manchester, 34 per cent in Newcastle and 17 per cent in Leeds traffic.

The situation is being assumed to get worse with Christmas just a month away as people usually tend to return back to their homes to celebrate the festival with their friends and families.

As the US election results were announced in several states on November 03, news broke out in North Dakota about a Republican candidate, David Andahl, winning one of two seats&nbsp;in the race for North Dakota's 8th district.

However, sadly, his family announced he passed away about a month ago after battling the novel coronavirus. "Our beloved son David passed away yesterday after a short battle with COVID-19," a Facebook post read.

The post also explained that while Andahl was careful in his approach towards the deadly virus, his existing health problems added to the danger. "He was very cautious especially because he did have a few health challenges, but he was unable to fend off this disease. We are heartbroken, and we ask that he be remembered not by how he died, but by how he lived," the family wrote.

Pakistan rules out complete lockdown despite surge in COVID-19 cases

The Australian government has agreed to purchase two more COVID-19 vaccines in development, beefing up the country`s prospective arsenal against the pandemic to 135 million doses as it aims to complete a mass inoculation programme within months.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Thursday the government will buy 40 million vaccine doses from Novavax, and 10 million from Pfizer and BioNTech.

That adds to the 85 million doses Australia has already committed to buy from AstraZeneca and CSL Ltd should trials prove successful, taking the country`s total anticipated outlay to A$3.2 billion ($2.3 billion).

"We aren`t putting all our eggs in one basket," Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Novavax and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which will be manufacturd in the United States and Europe, would complement the AstraZeneca and CSL products, which would be manufactured in Australia.

"That means we are now in a very strong position with the portfolio of four different vaccines, two protein, one viral vector and one MRMA, which is the Pfizer vaccine, and that`s innovative - the world hasn`t had an MRMA vaccine before," Hunt told TV broadcaster Nine Network.

The Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Novavax vaccines are considered to be among the leading candidates in the global race to receive regulatory approval.

Should trials prove successful, Australia expects to receive the first batches of the AstraZeneca vaccine in early 2021 and begin a mass rollout in March to be completed by the end of the year.

If all four vaccines come to market, Australia and its population of 26 million people will find itself with excess doses, even allowing for the fact that many of the candidates in development require two doses to be effective.

Australia has said it plans to donate any excess doses to Pacific Island countries and has committed to spending around A$525 million to ensure Pacific nations and East Timor achieve full immunisation coverage.

Australia is the largest aid donor to the Pacific islands and has sought in recent months to step up its engagement out of concern it risks being overshadowed by Chinese aid and financial support.

Zero local transmission

The announcement of the new planned vaccine purchases came as Australia recorded no cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 over the past 24 hours for the second time in a week. The country on Sunday recorded the first day without any local cases since early June.

Australia has reported just over 27,600 coronavirus cases and 907 deaths, far fewer than most other developed countries thanks to extensive testing, contact tracing and lockdowns.

As national case numbers have slowed slowed to fewer than 10 each day, states and territories have been reopening borders and relaxing differing levels of social distancing restrictions.

Qantas Airways on Thursday said it would boost the number of flights between New South Wales and Victoria states after officials announced on Wednesday that border restrictions would be lifted later this month.

The national carrier will go from the ten return flights it is currently operating each week between Sydney and Melbourne to more than 250 flights between the two states weekly. The Sydney-Melbourne route was one of the busiest in the world before the pandemic.
