‘Modi ka baap bhi jayega’: Kharge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge triggered the row with his remark at the 139th birth anniversary celebration of Dr. Shri Krishna Singh in Bihar’s capital Patna on Sunday.Kharge was criticizing PM Modi in his address, when a person in the audience shouted that PM Modi would not go anywhere. Responding to the remark, the Congress president said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega.”
BJP tears into Congress leadership
BJP came down hard on the main opposition party following Kharge’s remarks, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Congress of repeatedly using abusive language against PM Modi and his family.“Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has today torn apart all norms of decorum by making an indecent remark about Modi ji’s father in Patna,” he wrote in a post on X. “This is not the first time that the Congress party has used abusive language against Modi ji or his family. At times, they have hurled insults at his revered mother, at times called him ‘merchant of death,’ and at times mocked his poverty by calling him ‘chaiwala’. Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress party keeps crossing the limits of indecency every day,” he added. On Monday, BJP staged protests across states against Mallikarjun Kharge’s ‘baap’ remark on PM Modi and demanded an apology from Kharge. Meanwhile, TMC leader Mahua Moitra said in an X post on Monday, “BJP - Ayega to Modi (Modi will come); India- Jayega toh uska baap bhi... (Even his father will have to go).”

BJP MLA Ved Prakash Gupta said, “During the month of Sawan, crores of Sanatanis are engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva. Consuming fish at this time is an open display of Congress’s anti-Sanatan mindset. Congress should understand that the faith of the Sanatan society is not a political laboratory. Visiting Ayodhya, bowing down in temples, and then consuming fish exposes the dual character of Congress. The public will respond to those who toy with Sanatan faith.”
‘We are following the Constitution,’ event organiser defends food choice
Ram Milan Nishad, the event organiser from the Congress party, however, defended the choice, saying every individual has the constitutional right to eat food according to their preference. Nishad, who joined the Congress on 23 June, and is claiming a ticket from the Congress for the Gosaiganj assembly seat, said, “It is not written anywhere in the Constitution that fish should not be eaten in Sawan. We are following the Constitution.”
‘Insult to Sanatan traditions and sentiments of devotees’
Organizing a fish feast during Sawan is an insult to Sanatan traditions and the sentiments of millions of devotees, said BJP leader Kamlesh Srivastava.Congress should stop the politics of appeasement, he said, adding that the people of Ayodhya will never accept such a mockery of religious sentiments. Meanwhile, Congress District President Chetanarayan Singh said, “I don’t know about the fish feast incident. We went with President Ajay Rai. We came back with him. If that’s the case, Ram Nihal Nishad should not have done that.”
Ajay Rai attacks BJP after temple visits
After offering prayers at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi and Hanuman Garhi temples, UP Congress president Ajay Rai targeted the BJP government, alleging that oppression and injustice were taking place across the country.“Today, there is oppression and injustice happening across the entire country,” Rai said.He also alleged that the BJP government had “stolen the offerings presented at Lord Ram’s court” and said he had prayed to Lord Hanuman to give wisdom to those who had allegedly stolen the temple’s money. “I have prayed to Hanumanji for action against oppression and injustice in the country and state. Now we trust Hanumanji more than the government,” he said.

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced on social media showing fish being prepared at a banquet hall, where the welcome programme was organised for Rai, Congress state in-charge Rajpal Gautam, national spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh and Purvanchal in-charge Abhishek Dutt.

Mamata Banerjee Meets Sonia Gandhi As TMC Battles Dissent After Bengal Poll Defeat

Prominent historian Ramachandra Guha's column on Rahul Gandhi has created a stir in the intellectual community in New Delhi. He questioned the credibility of Rahul Gandhi to lead the decade-old party of India and his credentials to lead the country in scenarios like the West Asia war and oil crisis. This is significant because Guha, widely regarded as a Gandhian in his intellectual DNA and who spent years critiquing Hindu Nationalism, argues that the Gandhi family is helping Narendra Modi consolidate power. Guha argues that Congress, which held government in fourteen states in 2013, has now been reduced to merely 5 in 2026, and three successive general election defeats pile on the dismal performance of Rahul Gandhi as the leading face of the party. The BJP gleefully amplified the opinion, Shashi Tharoor pushed back with a comparison to Barack Obama, who also lacked any administrative experience prior to holding the most important office of the United States.
Is the Gandhi family an asset or a liability?
While Guha considers Rahul Gandhi to be an amiable personality. He claims that the Congress party has been plagued by utter hubris. He argued that while Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra was a genuine political achievement, it rebuilt his credibility and humanised him, demonstrating an ability to connect with ordinary Indians, which he had earlier failed to galvanise. The significant improvement in Congress tally from 52 to 99 seats showed there was momentum. Then came the fielding of Priyanka Gandhi in Wayanad, which reversed the perception that the Congress party was larger than a family enterprise. The moment it was coming out of the dynastic label, Rahul won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the 2024 elections and vacated the safer Wayanad seat and gifted it to his sibling. Priyanka entered parliament for the first time, winning Wayanad. But this is not merely about one constituency decision. Leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Himanta Biswa Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad, people who could have held power centres regionally, became chief ministers, cultivated a new generation of leaders, were either sidelined or left disenchanted by the ceiling of the Gandhi family. In Congress, loyalty becomes the primary currency, beyond competence and ambition, which can be threatening to the elites. The G-23 letter by the rebel group in 2020, featuring leaders like Gulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Shahshi Tharoor, Raj Babbar, and Bupinder Singh Hooda, sheds light on the inner turmoil and demand for structural reform. Many of whom have either been sidelined or defected to BJP. It shows the lack of internal democracy; further, Rahul Gandhi's relationship with power makes it a paradoxical situation. He denies the accountability of becoming a President, but effectively has final say on every decision, thus creating a power vacuum where there is authority without accountability.
Where Guha gets it wrong?
Guha gets the whole argument one-sided; he fails to acknowledge that the Congress party is not functional in isolation. It is a microsystem that exists within a broader, political and institutional framework of India. Which Tharoor aptly points out. Even if the Obama comparison does not fit the analogy, the premise is widely accurate. Rahul Gandhi is not fighting on a level playing field. We have seen the largest erosion of democratic institutions in India, from the ED, CBI, Election Commission, to the media. Every institution has become an organ of the ruling party's organism, adding to that the huge corporate financing that funnels to the ruling party. Evaluating Gandhi and Congress's dismal performance without considering the uneven playing field will be like a race between a disabled person and an able-bodied athlete. Further, the increase in Congress's vote share in the 2024 election complicates Guha's narrative. While ninety-nine seats are not a remarkable achievement, it shows an uptick in Congress's vote share.Guha's narrative shares two contrarian ideas: the Gandhi family is so strong that it is not allowing a meaningful alternative to the ruling BJP, while it is utterly politically ineffective. This is a passionate argument for a supposed utopia when a reformed, democratised, reinvigorated Congress will exist independent of Gandhi. But Congress is not a single party in an organisational sense, it's a coalition of hundreds of regional caste groups, local strongmen, interest groups and local networks who share a legacy loyalty to the Gandhi surname. A version of Congress did not historically exist where there was no Gandhi, and it may never exist. This is perhaps the legacy of the institutional wreckage of Indira Gandhi's centralisation of power, where loyalty to the party meant loyalty to the Gandhis. Without Gandhi, the party could be reduced to multiple self-interest groups without any adhesive ideals and ideas. A version may painfully emerge without Gandhi, but it will be a fatal transition, till then some other party might consolidate, and the Congress might not survive.

Tamil Nadu’s principal opposition party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has announced that it will not be taking part in the June 8th New Delhi meeting of the Congress-led INDIA front, the country’s primary opposition bloc. Saying that the party had been invited for the meeting, DMK stated that it would be skipping it “out of respect for the feelings of the DMK party comrades who are deeply hurt by the betrayal committed by the Congress party against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after the assembly general elections held in Tamil Nadu.” Last month, actor-politician Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly polls, pushing the incumbent DMK to a distant second place. However, as Vijay’s debutant TVK party fell short of the majority mark, the Congress broke away from its decades-long alliance with the DMK and offered support to Vijay’s TVK to form the government. After forming a coalition government with direct support from Congress and external support from CPI, CPI(M), VCK, IUML, Vijay even inducted legislators from Congress, VCK, IUML as Ministers in his cabinet. Despite having only five legislators in a house of 234, Congress has two Ministers in Vijay’s cabinet, and the TVK has also allocated a Rajya Sabha berth to the Congress. After the Congress broke away from the DMK-led front to support the TVK, there has been a public exchange of words between the leaders of the two former allies. Notably, on 7th May, DMK MP Kanimozhi had written to the Lok Sabha Speaker, requesting suitable changes in the seating arrangement of the DMK MPs in the Lower House of Parliament. “In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House,” said the request letter.
DMK’s statement on skipping the INDIA meet
Citing its stance, the DMK said that it was the first political movement to oppose everything that was against democracy, secularism, and states’ rights, including NEET exam, constituency realignment (delimitation), SIR imposed hastily at election time, the actions of the Election Commission, One Nation One Election, Waqf Act, FCRA amendment, etc. It has been the first political movement to stand up and fight for these measures democratically in Parliament, in the Legislative Assembly when it was in power, and in the courts when it was appropriate. “Since the inception of the ‘INDIA’ alliance, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has been the central force of the alliance. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader MK Stalin has been the main voice on the important issues facing the people of the country. This is well known to the parties and leaders of those parties that are part of the India alliance,” DMK said. It added that the betrayal committed by the Congress party against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is the reason for skipping the meet. Though DMK is not participating in the upcoming Delhi meeting, the party says it will voice out on national issues being raised by other parties that are taking part, the statement said.

DMK’s statement on skipping the INDIA meet Citing its stance, the DMK said that it was the first political movement to oppose everything that was against democracy, secularism, and states’ rights, including NEET exam, constituency realignment (delimitation), SIR imposed hastily at election time, the actions of the Election Commission, One Nation One Election, Waqf Act, FCRA amendment, etc.

After the assembly elections, the Congress broke its decades-long alliance with the DMK and offered support to Vijay’s TVK to form government. Despite having only five MLAs in a house of 234, Congress has two ministers in Vijay’s cabinet and has also been allocated a Rajya Sabha berth.

In a move that signals a formal breakdown within one of the INDIA bloc’s key alliances, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday sought a separate seating arrangement in the Lok Sabha, distancing itself from its long-time ally, the Indian National Congress. The request was submitted by DMK parliamentary leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, citing “changed political circumstances” following the fallout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. The 2026 Assembly election results in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Keralam, Assam and Puducherry have surprised the political party and voters with a mixed outcome. Along with the BJP in West Bengal, the Congress party managed to break its 10-year losing streak in Keralam but experienced setbacks in Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal. Notably, a significant share of the seats won by Congress in Kerala and Assam were secured by Muslim candidates. In Keralam, out of 35 Muslim MLAs elected, 30 seats were secured by the United Democratic Front (UDF), including eight from the Congress and 22 from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Similarly, 18 out of 20 Muslim candidates in Assam positioned by the Congress clinched victories, as compared to a significantly lower success rate among its non-Muslim candidates. Congress's ally, Raijor Dal, secured two seats, one of them won by a Muslim candidate, and the other won by Akhil Gogoi, who is under NIA probe for reportedly being the "kingpin of Maoist activities in Assam." In contrast, just one out of the remaining 79 non-Muslim candidates fielded by Congress managed to win, even though the party had pronounced candidates for 101 seats in Assam. In response, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) President, Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, remarked that the Congress is "finished in Assam" and has effectively turned into a Muslim league. "Those who dig wells for others, themselves fall into them. Congress had tried to dig a well (defeat) the AIUDF, and now Congress is finished. Congress has become the Muslim League, I am very sad with that," said Ajmal.
Congress' muslim candidates victory
In Assam’s Gauripur constituency, Congress candidate Abdul Sobahan Ali Sarkar secured a decisive win, defeating BJP-backed AIUDF candidate Nizanur Rahman by 19,097 votes. Similarly, Aftab Mollah of Congress triumphed in Jaleshwar with a margin of 109,688 votes over AIUDF leader Sheikh Alam. The party also put up a strong performance in Samaguri, where Tanzil Hussain defeated the BJP’s Anil Saikia by 108,310 votes. In West Bengal, Congress won two seats, both in constituencies with sizeable Muslim populations, and notably fielded more Muslim candidates than the Trinamool Congress. In Tamil Nadu, the party nominated two Muslim candidates, one of whom won. The party gave a seat to Fathima Thahiliya, who won the Perambra constituency in Kozhikode by over 5,000 votes. After her victory against CPI (M) leader TP Ramakrishnan, Fathima became the first Muslim woman MLA from the party. Congress’s performance highlights strong support among Muslim voters in Assam, with most winning candidates securing margins of around 20,000 votes and over 100,000 in constituencies like Gauripur, Jaleshwar, Samaguri, and Algapur-Katlicherra. The Congress party may soon be required to empty its long-standing office at 24 Akbar Road, which it has occupied since 1978. The location is closely linked to its presence in the national capital’s Lutyens’ zone. Party officials confirmed that an eviction notice was recently served, directing them to leave the premises by March 28. According to a report by the Time of India, a similar notice has also been issued to the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) for its office at 5 Raisina Road, with the same deadline. Congress leaders indicated they are likely to move to court to challenge any forced eviction. Even though the party has already moved its main operations to its new headquarters, Indira Bhavan, near ITO, it has continued to hold on to the Akbar Road address because of its symbolic and political significance. Senior Congress leader and MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi has criticised the decision, describing it as “illegal and politically motivated,” and stated that the party would explore all legal avenues. “This is illegal and politically motivated, and all legal recourses would be taken against the notices," he said.
Restructuring the bungalow’s allotment
Party officials stressed that the Akbar Road property is a key part of the organisation’s legacy, adding that the Congress has been paying market rent for it. They also noted that after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there were attempts to have the bungalow allotted to a senior Congress MP, but these efforts were unsuccessful. Additionally, they pointed out that the Raisina Road bungalow had been allotted in the party’s name for use by its youth wing. Meanwhile, the Congress is also considering requesting more time from the government to handle the transition. One option being discussed is restructuring the bungalow’s allotment, possibly by moving a senior leader to the Rajya Sabha and securing the property in their name to retain its use under existing rules. However, this would require swift political and legal steps ahead of the March 28 deadline. Also read: Will bring law mandating 75% jobs for resident Tamils: AIADMK manifesto

A similar notice has also been issued to the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) for its office at 5 Raisina Road, with the same deadline. Congress leaders indicated they are likely to move to court to challenge any forced eviction.

On September 10, the Bihar Congress posted an AI-generated video of what appear to be look-alikes of Prime Minister Modi and his mother, the late Heeraben. The BJP accused the Congress of crossing all limits with the “disgusting" video, and called it an insult to all mothers and sisters of the country. The video, shared without naming anyone, carried a caption in Hindi that translates to: ‘Ma’ appears in Sahab’s dreams.
Abusive slogans chanted from Voter Adhikar Yatra rally stage
The AI video was posted days after abusive slogans targeting PM Modi’s mother were chanted from a Congress-RJD stage during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ rally in Darbhanga.PM Modi himself condemned the remarks, saying the people of Bihar will never forgive the Congress and RJD.The official BJP Twitter handle also slammed the AI video, saying, “First, Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi’s late mother was abused from the Congress-RJD platform. The Congress on Wednesday pressed the PM Modi Government to act on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education's report recommending reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backwards Classes (OBC) in private higher educational institutions (HEIs). Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a statement, said that the committee chaired by senior party leader Digvijaya Singh has presented its report to Parliament advocating for the implementation of reservations in private HEIs. The statement highlighted that Article 15(5) of the Constitution, introduced by the UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh in 2006 through the 93rd Amendment, empowers the government to mandate reservations for SC, ST, and OBC students in private HEIs. In May 2014, the Supreme Court in Pramati Educational and Cultural Trust v Union of India upheld the validity of Article 15(5), affirming that reservations are permissible in such institutions. However, the statement pointed out that no law has been passed by Parliament to enforce Article 15(5). Data examined by the Committee revealed low representation of marginalised communities in private institutions, including three Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) recognised by the Union Government, where SC students constituted only 0.89 percent, ST students 0.53 percent, and OBC students 11.16 per cent. In view of this, the Committee has unanimously recommended that the Parliament enact legislation to implement 15 per cent reservations for SCs, 7.5 percent for STs, and 27 percent for OBCs in private HEIs. Jairam Ramesh stressed that the demand for reservations in private educational institutions can no longer be ignored. He also recalled that the Congress, in its 2024 Lok Sabha election manifesto "Nyay Patra," had pledged to bring such legislation. "The Parliamentary Committee has now given renewed impetus to this demand. The ball is now in the Modi Government's court," Ramesh said. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday (Jul 18) announced its formal exit from the INDIA bloc, a coalition of nearly three dozen Opposition parties, citing the bloc's failure "to stay united and take steps to further its agenda" after the 2024 general elections. The AAP's withdrawal comes just a day before a scheduled INDIA bloc meeting and days ahead of the scheduled beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. The party sought to blame the Indian National Congress (INC) for its unceremonious exit from the alliance that was formed in July 2023 to take on the BJP-led NDA.
The exit announcement
Announcing the decision from his Delhi residence, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh squarely blamed the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility as the bloc's largest constituent. "The AAP is not a part of the INDIA alliance, though we will continue to strongly raise public issues in Parliament, oppose the government whenever we believe it is in the wrong," he said. He added that AAP would now contest all future elections, including the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, on its own.He further said that the "INDIA alliance should hold its meetings and take whatever decisions it wants to take". Singh said that the Congress party failed to keep the Opposition united after 2024. "The INDIA bloc did not take steps to further its agenda, did not hold any meetings after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The largest party in the alliance is Congress. But did it play its role to keep the parties united?" Singh asked.
AAP vs Congress
Though AAP and Congress had forged a tactical understanding in states like Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa and Chandigarh during the Lok Sabha elections, relations between the two have remained frosty. In the recent 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, both parties contested the elections separately and took frequent potshots at each other during the campaign.Despite this, AAP insists it will continue to oppose the BJP in Parliament and raise key public issues, even if outside the INDIA fold. "We have always played the role of a strong opposition and will continue to do that," Singh said.
Congress slams AAP's “double game”
Responding to the announcement, Congress leader and Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said AAP's departure would, in fact, "strengthen the alliance," and accused the party of "playing a double game"."AAP's exit will only strengthen the INDIA alliance by removing ambiguity. Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the clear and credible face of the fight to protect India's Constitution, democracy, and secular ethos... In contrast, AAP was always playing a double game. The AAP's withdrawal comes just a day before a scheduled INDIA bloc meeting and days ahead of the scheduled beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. The party sought to blame the Congress for its exit from the alliance that was formed in July 2023 to take on the BJP-led NDA.

The exit announcement Announcing the decision from his Delhi residence, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh squarely blamed the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility as the bloc's largest constituent. "The AAP is not a part of the INDIA alliance, though we will continue to strongly raise public issues in Parliament, oppose the government whenever we believe it is in the wrong," he said. He added that AAP would now contest all future elections, including the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, on its own. He further said that the "INDIA alliance should hold its meetings and take whatever decisions it wants to take". Singh said that the Congress party failed to keep the Opposition united after 2024. "The INDIA bloc did not take steps to further its agenda, did not hold any meetings after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The largest party in the alliance is Congress.
