<p>The Blink set was the pop-punk group's first performance with their original lineup in nearly a decade and had droves of 30-somethings reliving the soundtrack to their youths.</p>

<p>Bandmembers Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge -- who are now all pushing or past 50 -- delivered the hits of middle school dances yore, including "Rock Show" and "What's My Age Again."<br />
By the set's close, the band had thousands of people belting out a moody "I Miss You" before a mass singalong of "All The Small Things."</p>

<p>After the set, many rushed to a neighbouring tent to catch a blockbuster show from Blondie, who also delivered hits including "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me," and invited guest Nile Rodgers onstage.</p>

<p>''We've waited years for this!" exclaims Jesus Medina as he dishes out burritos to the hungry masses at Coachella, the music festival that's back on in the California desert after three years.</p>

<p>After a Covid-induced hiatus, Coachella Valley businesses are flourishing with the return of one of music's most-touted events, a boon for the region that counts festivals as key to its economic engine.</p>

<p>With just a little over 90,000 residents, Indio's motto is "The City of Festivals," events that make it at least $3 million in direct revenue alone, according to municipal figures, which includes ticket-sharing dollars and transient occupancy taxes from campers.</p>

<p>The benefit to businesses from liquor stores to hotels to gas stations took that figure soaring even higher -- until the pandemic stymied live performance and put Coachella on indefinite hiatus.</p>

<p>"We had everything ready in 2020, but the pandemic canceled everything," Medina told AFP in Spanish. His business "Cena Vegana" sold more than a thousand burritos on Friday, during Coachella's opening day.</p>

<p>"It doesn't stop, the lines are endless -- this is a great opportunity for us."</p>

<p>Coachella draws in more than 125,000 people daily over the course of two three-day weekends.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thousands of people occupy hotels in neighboring areas including Palm Springs, the resort area bordered by the San Jacinto mountains and known for its palm trees, golf courses and spas.</p>

<p>Business has been "quiet for years, a couple years, but we're full and it's busy," said Char Pershind, manager of the Zoso Hotel.</p>

<p>Nearly all of the 162 rooms at Zoso are booked by people attending and working at the festival, and virtually everything is sold out for the event's second weekend.</p>

<p>In 2019, the last time Coachella attendees descended on the valley, Pershind worked at a different hotel, and says this year many more people are in town for the shows.</p>

<p>"People have been cooped up for so long... they want to get out and enjoy the air," she said.</p>

<p>"I know they come for the music -- but they come for a lot more."</p>

<p>For Mitchell Car, who works at a bustling vintage clothing and accessories shop, Coachella is a golden opportunity to expand sales.</p>

<p>This year, the festival's giving 1970s vibes with bell-bottom silhouettes of yore, along with bursts of neon and glitter adding sheen to the Empire Polo Club grounds where the stages spring up each year.</p>

<p>Coachella's 2020 edition was scrapped as the coronavirus pandemic came into full force, and two years of chaotic cancellations, rescheduled shows and lineup shakeups ensued.</p>

<p>As it returns after a three-year hiatus, Coachella is considered a bellwether for the multi-billion-dollar touring industry that's still on shaky ground after persistent pandemic setbacks.</p>

<p>After other large-scale festivals including Lollapalooza last year required proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 result, Coachella this winter announced it would not require any such mitigation measures, including masks or social distancing.</p>

<p>The festival is held mostly outside, welcoming some 125,000 revelers daily from all over the nation and abroad, many of whom camp and fill up hotels nearby.</p>

<p>There will be two testing sites on festival grounds. Jose Arballo -- a senior public information representative for the public health department of Riverside County, where Coachella takes place -- said there also would be bolstered testing facilities nearby.</p>

<p>He also noted that unreported at-home testing has possibly skewed case rate data downward, and anticipated the county would be able to assess the festival's public health impact by the middle of next week -- just ahead of the festival's second string of dates.</p>

<p>The experimental rock icons, booked for the third time to lead the premier festival in the California desert, played most of two songs in awkward, inadvertent silence with frontman Thom Yorke oblivious that the audience could no longer hear.</p>

<p>After twice retreating from stage to deal with audio problems, Radiohead soldiered on with raw renditions of its best-known songs -- including &quot;Creep,&quot; the English rockers&#39; 1992 debut single that they have since played sparingly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such glaring technical problems are exceedingly rare for a band the calibre of Radiohead -- long a critical favourite -- or Coachella, one of the world&#39;s most lucrative cultural events renowned for its punctilious organisation.</p>

<p>But it is the latest in a series of once unthinkable glitches in top-tier events, including an embarrassing snafu in awarding the top Oscar and sound issues at the Grammys.</p>

<p>Radiohead opened powerfully underneath a sea of transcendent light-beams and stars -- a &quot;moon shaped pool,&quot; in the words of the title of the band&#39;s last album.</p>

<p>Three songs in, the group cranked up the energy on &quot;Ful Stop&quot; with a purple-drenched, crater-laden display that had the feel of a lunar landing, but audio issues were soon sorely noticeable with jarring bleeps over the music.</p>

<p>Rarely chatty on stage, Yorke took responsibility for the technical problems and voiced appreciation to the crowd for staying put.</p>

<p>&quot;I&#39;d like to tell you a joke to lighten the mood or something like that, but this is Radiohead, so f***&nbsp;it,&quot; said Yorke -- making, in effect, a joke about the band&#39;s grim reputation.</p>

<p>Gaga, 31, took to Twitter to announce she will be this year&#39;s headliner for the annual music extravaganza.</p>

<p>The replacement comes weeks after Gaga&#39;s critically acclaimed Super Bowl LI halftime performance.</p>
