CNN has sued <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-faces-a-blitz-of-investigations-from-democratic-run-house-176101">US President Donald Trump</a> and top White House aides over the revocation of CNN reporter Jim Acosta's White House press pass.&nbsp;

The suit was filed in the US District Court in Washington Tuesday morning.

CNN reported on its website that both CNN and Acosta are plaintiffs in the lawsuit.&nbsp;

And that there are six defendants — Trump, White House chief of staff John Kelly, press secretary Sarah Sanders, deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine, Secret Service director Joseph Clancy, and the Secret Service officer who took Acosta's press pass away.&nbsp;

CNN added that "the six defendants are all named because of their roles in enforcing and announcing Acosta's suspension".&nbsp;

"The wrongful revocation of these credentials violates CNN and Acosta's First Amendment rights of freedom of the press, and their Fifth Amendment rights to due process," the network said in a statement.

"We have asked this court for an immediate restraining order requiring the pass be returned to Jim, and will seek permanent relief as part of this process," CNN said, warning that Acosta's credential suspension could set a precedent for future attacks on other outlets.

"If left unchallenged, the actions of the White House would create a dangerous chilling effect for any journalist who covers our elected officials."

Acosta and Trump had got into a spat last Wednesday during a press conference. Acosta had asked Trump why he had described the central American migrant caravan marching towards the US as an "invasion".&nbsp;

Acosta told Trump that they were a "group of migrants", and still several hundred kilometres away from the border — not an "invasion".&nbsp;

Trump said he thought of them as an invasion and that they (Trump and Acosta) had differing views on the subject.&nbsp;

When Acosta persisted, Trump finally told him to put the mike down.&nbsp;

"You are a rude and terrible person, and CNN should be ashamed of itself for having you working for them," Trump told Acosta.&nbsp;

Hours later, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced Acosta's hard pass had been suspended, a rare if not unprecedented move that she justified by claiming the reporter was inappropriately "placing his hands" on the intern.

Sanders then tweeted a video that she said backed up her narrative of the incident -- but analysts said the footage was sped up to make it appear that Acosta struck the intern.

The press secretary on Tuesday dismissed the CNN legal complaint as "grandstanding," vowing that the White House would "vigorously defend against this lawsuit."&nbsp;

The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, Politico -- a string of major US media were denied access Friday to the daily White House briefing, while smaller outlets that have provided favourable coverage of the Trump administration, such as Breitbart and One America News, received a green light to attend.

For once, the event was not held on-camera in the main White House briefing room, but instead in the office of the president&#39;s spokesman Sean Spicer -- and for a select group of handpicked media.

The White House Correspondents Association said it was &quot;protesting strongly&quot; against the decision, and would bring it up with the administration, while several of the media affected have pushed back hard against the administration&#39;s move.

The New York Times described the White House decision as &quot;an unmistakable insult to democratic ideals,&quot; while a CNN statement called it &quot;an unacceptable development.&quot;

In an editorial, the Los Angeles Times warned that the incident had &quot;ratcheted up the White House&#39;s war on the free press&quot; to a new level.

&quot;Trump has betrayed some alarmingly authoritarian notions of the presidency over the past two years, and punishing organisations that run stories critical of the president falls right into that category,&quot; the paper wrote.

Trump blasted CNN after it&nbsp;reported the fact that both President Obama and President-elect Trump were briefed by US intelligence about allegations that Russian operatives claimed to have &quot;compromising&quot; personal and financial information on Trump. After Trump dismissed Costa, he took a question from someone at&nbsp;Breitbart, a&nbsp;website that is staunchly pro-Trump and pro-white nationalism. A founding member of Breitbart, Steve Bannon, is now Trump&#39;s&nbsp;chief strategist.&nbsp;

News agency CNN said&nbsp;its decision to publish &quot;carefully sourced reporting&quot; on unverified intelligence documents concerning Donald Trump is &quot;vastly different than BuzzFeed&#39;s decision to publish unsubstantiated memos,&quot; on Wednesday.&nbsp;

CNN&#39;s statement came after President-elect Trump called the news outlet &quot;fake news&quot; and refused to take a CNN reporter&#39;s questions at a news conference.

BuzzFeed on Tuesday published a story about a dossier of documents that it said were unverified and &quot;potentially unverifiable&quot; allegations of contact between Trump aides and Russian operatives.

Included in the documents were claims that Russian intelligence had compromising information about Trump.

A BuzzFeed spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

Throughout the news conference, Trump decried a CNN report on Tuesday that said US&nbsp;intelligence officials had presented Trump with claims that Russian operatives said they had compromising personal and financial information about the president-elect.

Unsubstantiated British intelligence links Trump to Russian prostitutes, Russian government

Hillary Clinton got a support bounce of four to seven percentage points after the Democratic National Convention and now holds a substantial lead over Donald Trump in the White House race, polls released Monday showed. 
 
Clinton&#39;s advantage over the Republican Trump is 46 per cent to 39 per cent, according to the CBS News poll. 
 
After the Republican convention but prior to the Democratic one, Trump got a two-point bump and the race was tied, CBS said. 
 
A CNN-ORC poll released later Monday has Clinton, the former secretary of state, commanding an even larger lead of nine points, 52-43, in the aftermath of the Democratic confab in Philadelphia. 
 
That poll had Trump ahead 48-45 following the Republican convention. 
 
Clinton also came out stronger in terms of the share of Americans who think her policies will move the country in the right direction, rising from 43 percent of respondents before either convention to 48 percent today, according to the CNN poll.&nbsp; 
 
Trump&#39;s &quot;right direction&quot; number held nearly steady following the conventions. 
 
&quot;I think both parties got what they wanted out of their conventions,&quot; Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus told CNN after the network&#39;s poll was released.
