Gravitas | Consuming very hot drinks triples risk of cancer, study finds

According to a new study published in the international journal of cancer, consuming very hot drinks is likely to triple the risk of developing oesophageal cancer. This is one of the most malignant cancers, leading to a high number of deaths.

On a farm outside Bengaluru, rescue dogs like Chloe are doing unusual work — sniffing human breath samples for cancer while wearing 3D-printed "doggy Iron Man" helmets packed with sensors. Startup Dognosis pairs the dogs' 300-million-receptor noses with AI that reads their brain activity, respiration, and body language to flag likely cancer cases. In trials across six Karnataka hospitals with 1,500+ participants, the method reportedly topped 90% accuracy across seven cancer types.

A breakthrough study in mammalian genomics has revealed surprising clues about cancer resistance and longevity hidden within bat DNA. Researchers analyzing high-resolution bat genomes discovered that long-lived bat species possess unique copy number variations (gene duplications) and positive selection in key immune and DNA-repair genes.

A new study has raised concerns about the health risks of sugary beverages. Researchers found that people who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened soft drink every day had a significantly higher risk of developing stomach cancer compared with those who avoided sugary drinks.

According to the findings, daily consumers of sugary beverages faced a 2.45 times greater risk of stomach cancer. The study adds to growing evidence linking excessive sugar intake and ultra-processed drinks to serious health problems.

A major study analyzing more than 12 million death certificates has found that pilots and flight attendants face some of the highest rates of radiation-related cancer deaths among U.S. workers. Researchers say prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation at high altitudes may increase the risk of cancers including leukemia, melanoma, breast and thyroid cancer, raising fresh concerns about the long-term health risks faced by airline crews.

Study warns pilots face hidden cancer risk from cosmic radiation

<p>A study has found that pilots and flight attendants are being exposed to cosmic radiation from outer space more than others, and are at a greater risk of dying from related cancers. Could Viagra, the widely used drug for erectile dysfunction, become part of the fight against cancer?

A new study suggests that sildenafil, commonly known by its brand name Viagra, may help slow the spread of cancer by limiting the ability of cancer cells to use cholesterol—an essential component that helps them migrate and form new tumors.

Researchers say the drug's anti-metastatic effects could become even stronger when combined with statins, which reduce cholesterol production. The findings, published in the journal Cancer Research, also indicate that patients taking sildenafil showed improved survival rates.

While the research is promising, scientists emphasize that more clinical studies are needed before Viagra can be recommended as a cancer treatment.

Scientists are uncovering a surprising ally in the fight against cancer: domestic cats. A groundbreaking study has mapped the cancer-related genes of hundreds of cats, revealing that felines share around 90% of their genetic code with humans.

Researchers say many cancers in cats develop through the same biological pathways and genetic mutations seen in people, making them valuable for understanding the disease and developing future treatments. The findings could open new avenues for both human and veterinary cancer research.

In a clinical trial, researchers found that a drug called Daraxonrasib doubled the survival time in patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This is significant as more than half of people with pancreatic cancer die within three months of diagnosis. Amid this, a report projected a shortfall of 100 million cancer care workers by 2050.

A new study has linked weight gain in early adulthood to a higher risk of developing certain cancers later in life. Researchers found that men who gained excess weight in their 20s faced a significantly higher risk of colon cancer, while women who were obese before 30 were more likely to develop womb cancer. Experts say hormonal changes, inflammation, and long-term metabolic stress may play a major role. Obesity is already considered one of the leading preventable causes of cancer in several countries, including the UK.

In a major public health step, Telangana has declared cancer a notifiable disease, making it mandatory for hospitals and clinics to report every diagnosed case within 30 days. The move aims to strengthen surveillance, improve early detection, and ensure better planning of treatment and resources. Health facilities will now maintain dedicated cancer registers, helping the government build a clearer picture of the disease burden across the state and respond more effectively.
