Recent events involving the health of Kate Middleton and King Charles III have brought attention to ancient prophecies made by a famous seer named Nostradamus. He predicted tough times for the monarchy in 2024, including a king stepping down and someone unexpected taking over. King Charles is sick with cancer, and people wonder if he might give up his throne. Nostradamus also talked about a "King of the Isles" being removed and replaced by a different kind of leader.

People are curious if Nostradamus' predictions might be coming true. Meanwhile, a modern-day seer named Athos Salome has also made predictions about Kate Middleton's health. Kate has revealed she has cancer after having surgery for another health issue. Athos Salome thinks Kate will have more health problems with her bones and joints in the future, but he also thinks her biggest challenge will be her role in the royal family.

A recent research has revealed that people with bowel cancer who consume two to four cups of coffee daily are significantly less likely to experience disease recurrence and have a reduced risk of mortality from any cause. This suggests a potential benefit of coffee consumption for individuals diagnosed with bowel cancer, the UK's second-leading cancer killer, according to the study published in the International Journal of Cancer.

The study conducted in the Netherlands, involving 1,719 bowel cancer patients, demonstrated a dose-dependent relationship between coffee consumption and disease recurrence. Those who consumed at least two cups daily experienced a lower risk of cancer recurrence, with the greatest reduction observed among those consuming five or more cups per day.

Impact on survival

Higher coffee intake was also associated with improved survival rates among bowel cancer patients. Individuals consuming at least two cups daily had a lower risk of mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers, with the most significant reduction seen among those consuming five or more cups per day.

The findings offer promise, suggesting that regular coffee consumption may benefit individuals diagnosed with bowel cancer. If corroborated by further studies, this could potentially influence the behaviour of the 43,000 Britons diagnosed with bowel cancer annually. Given the disease's significant toll – claiming approximately 16,500 lives annually – such interventions could have profound implications.

While cautioning against definitive causal conclusions, she highlighted the dose-dependent nature of the observed effects, suggesting a potential real association.

“It’s intriguing that that this study suggests drinking three to four cups of coffee may reduce the recurrence of bowel cancer,” she said.

Scientists are in the process of developing flavoured lollipops as a potential non-invasive method for detecting mouth cancer, with the aim to sidestep the current invasive and often uncomfortable diagnostic procedures involving the insertion of a camera through the nose or mouth to collect tissue samples for biopsy.

These conventional methods, while effective, can be time-consuming, painful, and necessitate specialised skills. In contrast, the proposed lollipop-based approach offers a gentler and swifter alternative, as reported by the Independent.

How would this work?

The lollipops would be made from a material called smart hydrogel, originating from the University of Birmingham. The mechanism behind these lollipops would involve patients sucking on them to transfer saliva samples into the hydrogel. The hydrogel functions as a sort of molecular net, capturing both saliva and proteins that could potentially serve as biomarkers for cancer. Later, these trapped proteins can be released in the lab for analysis by cutting open the hydrogel.

Dr Ruchi Gupta, an associate professor of biosensors at the University of Birmingham, expressed optimism about the project's prospects to the Independent.

“Smart hydrogels have really exciting potential for diagnosing mouth cancer. They can be easily moulded into shapes as a solid to ‘catch’ proteins in saliva. We’re really excited to start the next phase of this project,'' she said.

The project has garnered financial support amounting to £350,000 ($441,035) from Cancer Research UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Currently, the research team is engaging in focus groups to determine suitable flavours for the lollipops.

People have often used vaping as a “less harmful” alternative to smoking. However, a new study published in the journal Cancer Research suggests that might not entirely be the case. The recently published research found that people who use e-cigarettes face similar changes to their DNA as smokers who go on to develop cancer.

About the study

The study conducted by University College London and the University of Innsbruck, Austria helped researchers better understand the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on health.

Scientists analysed the epigenetic effects of tobacco and e-cigarettes on DNA methylation in over 3,500 samples to see the impact on cells directly exposed to tobacco (cheek) and those which are not.

Notably, it was the “first research to investigate the impact of smoking and vaping on different kinds of cells – rather than just blood,” said study author and researcher at University College London, Dr Chiara Herzog and the University of Innsbruck, in a statement.

Herzog said that they strive to consider the longer-term health implications of using e-cigarettes.

The researchers noted that they cannot say that e-cigarettes cause cancer, based on this study, but they did find similar epigenetic changes in the buccal cells as smokers which are linked to the risk of lung cancer in smokers.

The epigenome is an extra layer of information that is superimposed on our DNA and it keeps changing throughout our lives due to genetic or nongenetic factors including lifestyles, exposure to hormones, environmental factors, and so on.

What did they find?

According to the study, similar epigenetic changes were observed in the cells of e-cigarette users who had smoked less than 100 tobacco cigarettes in their lives.

Researchers, through their computational analysis of the samples, found that some smoking-related epigenetic changes remain more stable than others after giving up smoking.

This stability was also observed in smoking-related epigenetic changes in cervical samples, which was something that had not been studied previously.

The researcher at UCL also called for additional research on the long-term impact of vaping.

Several studies have revealed that microplastics or nanoplastics are linked to heart attack, stroke and even cancer.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, people with nanoplastics in their carotid artery tissues were twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke over the next three years than people who had none.

Carotid arteries lie on each side of the neck and carry blood to the brain. Fatty cholesterol plaques can similarly clog them as the arteries leading into the heart. This process is called atherosclerosis. The new study analysed tissues removed from the neck arteries of 257 people who underwent carotid endarterectomy.

Raffaele Marfella, the study's lead author and a professor of internal medicine and director of the department of medical and surgical sciences at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples, Italy, said, "To date, our study is the first that associated the plastic contamination with human diseases.

"Our study convincingly highlights the presence of plastics and their association with cardiovascular events in a representative population affected by atherosclerosis," she added.

What are microplastics or nanoplastics?

Microplastics are polymer fragments ranging from less than 0.2 inch to 1/25,000th of an inch. Anything smaller is nanoplastic and has to be measured in billionths of a metre. Experts worry that nanoplastics are a bigger threat to human health.

In research around pregnant mice, plastic chemicals were found in the brain, heart, liver, kidney and lungs of the developing foetus 24 hours after the mother ingested or breathed in plastic particles. Other studies have also shown that nanoplastics and microplastics can lead to oxidative stress, tissue damage and inflammation. Moreover, other animal studies have proved that these harmful particles can change heart rate and impede cardiac function.

Furthermore, researchers have found nanoparticles in human blood, lung and liver tissues, urine and faeces, mother's milk and the placenta. However, they have yet to prove what effect these polymers can have on the body's organs and functions.

Another study published in the journal Chemosphere showed that microplastics and nanoplastics remain in the cell for much longer than previously assumed, as they are passed on to the newly formed cell during cell division. The study also revealed that these harmful particles can lead to the metastasis of tumours by increasing the migration of cancer cells to other regions of the body.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, heightened attention to our sense of smell has spurred a deeper exploration into olfactory research. Recent studies have shown a remarkable connection between odors and gene expression, extending far beyond the confines of the nasal cavity. These findings have ignited speculation among scientists about the potential therapeutic applications of volatile compounds, particularly in combating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

The power of scent

An unexpected revelation from these investigations is the direct impact of odors on gene expression, even in tissues devoid of traditional odorant receptors. This discovery has opened up new avenues for medical intervention, prompting researchers to consider the possibility of harnessing the power of scent for targeted treatments.

This mechanism suggests a potential avenue for developing novel therapeutic strategies to combat cancer progression and neurodegeneration, according to Science Alert.

However, alongside these promising findings, concerns about potential health risks and the need for further research loom large. While diacetyl shows promise in halting cancer cell growth and mitigating neurodegeneration, its association with lung diseases like obliterative bronchiolitis raises cautionary flags. Cast From The Past: How cancer remains a royal constant in Britain

A few months ago, India’s drug regulator Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), approved the commercial use of CAR-T cell therapy. The therapy includes genetically reprogramming a patient’s immune system to fight cancer.

Today, the therapy has turned out to be a lifesaver for many patients, including for Dr (Col) V K Gupta, a Delhi-based gastroenterologist with 28 years of experience of working in the Indian Army, Indian Express reported.

He accessed the therapy by paying just INR 42 lakh or $50,000, whereas a similar therapy costs up to INR 4 crore $480,000 abroad.

Doctors at the Tata Memorial Hospital, where Gupta underwent the procedure, said he is “currently free of cancer cells.” Gupta is the first patient to have achieved this status, something he could only dream of just a year ago.

The doctor who performed the therapy on Gupta said he was totally free of cancer cells. “While it’s premature to claim a lifelong cure, the patient is currently free of cancer cells,” Dr Hasmukh Jain, hemato-oncologist and associate professor at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Still premature to tell success rate

However, the doctor added that it was still premature to tell about the success rate of the therapy. He said the initial findings suggest “better survival chances and lower remission rates” for patients in the early stages of cancer.
