Trump on his campaign trail had promised to impose a minimum tariff of 10 per cent on all imports entering the United States. Leah Scarpelli, a partner at the Washington law firm ArentFox Schiff, was quoted as saying by CBC News that while he was not expecting any specific tariff targeting Canada, “I think the risk for Canada is that you just get swept in with tariffs on everywhere.”

Both were accused of being part of a sophisticated human smuggling operation, which has been feeding a fast-growing population of Indians illegally living in the US.&nbsp;

However, both have pleaded not guilty.&nbsp;

On his last trip in January 2022, Shand was about to pick up 11 more Indian migrants, including the Patels. However, only seven survived the extreme cold.

The smuggling network was reportedly charging up to $90,000 per person. Meanwhile, many families like the Patels sold their farmlands or used heavy savings to fund these journeys.&nbsp;

It wasn’t until much later that the Canadian authorities found the Patel family who had died due to the extreme cold.

Indian government said Thursday (Nov. 14) that it was seeking to get proclaimed Khalistani terrorist and separatist Arshdeep Dalla extradited following his arrest in Canada. &nbsp;Dalla was one of the two persons detained by Canada police on October 28 in connection with a shooting. Arshdeep was designated a terrorist by New Delhi in January 2023. India has sought his extradition on several occasions but to no avail.

"We have seen media reports circulating since 10 November on the arrest in Canada of proclaimed offender Arsh Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla, the de-facto chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force. Canadian print and visual media have widely reported on the arrest. We understand that the Ontario Court has listed the case for hearing," the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The MEA statement added that Dalla is wanted in India for over 50 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, and terror acts. A red-corner notice was also issued against him in May 2022, said the Indian government.

In December 2023, the Department of Justice of Canada sought additional information on the case. A reply to these queries was sent in March this year," the statement elaborated.

India’s anti-terror National Investigation Agency (NIA) had also requested cooperation from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 2022 but the efforts didn’t bear fruit.

Canadian journalist Terry Milewski on Sunday criticized Canada's approach to the Khalistan issue, calling it "hypocritical" and a "national disgrace."

Speaking to ANI, Milewski expressed his concerns about Canada's handling of the Khalistani separatism, stating, "I have been saying for 20 years that Canada has been hypocritical in its approach to the Khalistani menace. The Khalistan issue, as it's been treated by Canada over the years, has been a national disgrace."

He further disputed claims that Australia Today was being blocked and attributed the issue to a long-standing commercial negotiation between Facebook and Canadian regulators, who insist that content creators should be paid.

"All you have to do is click on the site and see if it's blocked. I can tell you that it's not; it hasn't been since the very beginning... It hasn't been blocked, it hasn't been banned, it hasn't been censored. Australia Today is an excellent publication. They serve the Indian diaspora in Australia very well. They and their supposed defenders have been fooled..." Milewski said.

"The only problem with access to the site is if you insist on getting it only on Facebook. But if you just go to the site, there's no problem. The issue is a long-standing commercial negotiation, a difference of opinion between Facebook and Canadian regulators, who insist that content creators should be paid..." he added.

Milewski also condemned the recent Khalistani attack on Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, attributing these incidents to the failure of Canadian politicians to address the growing influence of Khalistani separatism over the past 40 years.

"This is extremely disturbing, and it arises from the utter folly of Canadian politicians over 40 years," he said. 
"It is an open aggression by Khalistanis aimed at Hindu temples in this case, and it is extremely worrying..." he added.

Speaking about Donald Trump's "unpredictability," Milewski noted that Trump has a good relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been praising the incoming administration and looking forward to working with Trump.

"Trump is nothing if not unpredictable. He gets along very well with PM Modi and Modi has been very assiduous in peppering the incoming administration with praise and looking forward to working with his friend Donald Trump." he said.
