He recently&nbsp;received his Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) status.&nbsp;

The police on June 7 got a call reporting a shooting&nbsp;at around 8:46 am in the 900-block of 164 Street in Surrey, British Columbia and upon reaching found Goyal dead.

"We are thankful for the hard work of the Surrey RCMP, Air 1, and &nbsp;Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT), but there is still more work to be done. &nbsp;Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) investigators remain dedicated to determining why Mr Goyal was the victim of this homicide," said Sergeant Timothy Pierotti.

Goyal worked as a sales executive in Surrey. His father owns a firewood business in Ludhiana while his mother is a homemaker.&nbsp;

He reportedly had no criminal record and the motive behind his killing is under investigation, the Royal Canadian Police said.

While&nbsp;initial evidences into the incident point towards a targeted killing, an inquiry is underway to ascertain the actual reason behind his death.

David Vigneault, Canada's intelligence agency chief, apparently paid two quiet visits to India in February and March, news agency PTI reported citing two people familiar with the matter.&nbsp;

The news agency said that the visits were to apprise Indian officials of the case relating to the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.&nbsp;

Nijjar was declared a terrorist by India. He was shot dead outside a gurdwara in British Columbia in Surrey on June 18 last year.&nbsp;

Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have been at their lowest after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to the killing of the Sikh separatist leader, saying that there were "credible allegations" that India was involved.&nbsp;

New Delhi rejected the claims, calling them absurd and motivated. India also accused the Canadian government of sheltering Khalistan terrorists who threaten India's sovereignty.&nbsp;

Canada claimed that The Five Eyes, which is an intelligence-sharing organisation comprising&nbsp;the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, provided the information. The intel led Trudeau to make these charges.&nbsp;

Now, the new agency said that Vigneault, the director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), is learnt to have shared information that emerged during Ottawa's investigation into the killing.&nbsp;

An official announcement is yet to come.&nbsp;

PTI also reported that Vigneault's visits came weeks before Canada arrested three Indian nationals - Karanpreet Singh (28), Kamalpreet Singh (22) and Karan Brar (22). They were arrested on charges of alleged involvement in Nijjar's killing. Another Indian, identified as Amandeep Singh, was also arrested by the Canadian authorities.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been probing the murder. As quoted, a government of Canada official said: "We can confirm that the Director of CSIS, David Vigneault, has travelled to India but we do not comment on the nature or substance of closed-door meetings."&nbsp;

"With that said, since Canada became aware of the credible allegations, we have consistently provided all the information we can to India on the Nijjar case, through multiple channels," he said.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, India summoned the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner following an event in Toronto in which pro-Khalistan slogans were raised. The event was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other top Canadian political leaders.&nbsp;

In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement expressing their dismay: "The Government of India’s deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. Canadian politicians slam extremists glorifying Indira Gandhi's assassination

The Bank of Canada (BoC) cut its benchmark policy rate on Wednesday, becoming the first G7 member to loosen monetary policy in a global climate of high interest rates. The central bank dropped interest rates to 4.75% from 5%, the first reduction in four years, in a widely anticipated decision to relieve pressure on deeply indebted consumers.<o:p></o:p>

"Let's just enjoy the moment for a bit," stated Governor Tiff Macklem during a press conference. Macklem emphasised that any additional rate cuts would be contingent on ongoing falls in inflation and economic developments consistent with the bank's predictions.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Future rate cuts dependent on inflation trajectory<o:p></o:p></h2>

Governor Macklem stated that the timing of future rate decreases would be tightly connected to inflation trends and economic performance. In April, Canada's inflation fell to a three-year low of 2.7 per cent, staying below 3 per cent for four months while being above the Bank of Canada's 2 per cent objective.<o:p></o:p>

"If inflation continues to ease and our confidence that inflation is on track to reach the 2 per cent target grows, it is reasonable to expect further cuts to our policy interest rate," Macklem said, adding that decisions would be decided on a meeting-by-meeting basis.<o:p></o:p>

Despite financial markets pricing in a 39 per cent possibility of another decrease to 4.50% next month, some analysts are hopeful of a July reduction. Royce Mendes, head of the macro strategy at Desjardins Group, and Andrew Grantham, senior economist at CIBC, predict a decrease in July, with Grantham forecasting four reductions this year.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Market reaction and economic context<o:p></o:p></h2>

Following the BoC's decision, the Canadian dollar fell 0.22 per cent to 1.3708 per US dollar, or 72.98 US cents, after originally rising in early trading. The BoC's move aligns it with other central banks, such as Sweden's Riksbank and the Swiss National Bank, which have similarly decreased interest rates to fight slowing economic growth despite lower inflation.<o:p></o:p>

Macklem acknowledged the risk of deviating too far from US monetary policy, adding that US inflation remains sticky, with the Federal Reserve forecast to decrease rates only once this year. "There are limits to how far we can diverge from the United States, but we're not close to those limits," Macklem stated.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Economic growth and outlook<o:p></o:p></h2>

The Canadian economy grew at an annualised pace of 1.7 per cent in the first quarter, slower than projected, raising market expectations for the rate reduction. The BoC had previously raised interest rates by 475 basis points over 16 months, until July 2023, after keeping them at 5 per cent for nearly a year.<o:p></o:p>

Macklem stated that while future rate reductions will be more gradual than prior hikes, they would stay above pre-pandemic levels. The bank's next rate announcement is set for July 24, along with the release of its newest quarterly forecasts.<o:p></o:p>

A Canadian serial killer, convicted in 2007 of murdering six women after taking them to a pig farm during a crime spree near the city of Vancouver back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, was killed after being attacked by another inmate in a maximum-security prison, authorities said on Friday (May 31).&nbsp;

<h2>About his death&nbsp;</h2>

In a statement on Friday, the Correctional Service of Canada said that Pickton, who was an inmate of Port-Cartier Institution in the Canadian province of Quebec, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after being assaulted by another prisoner on May 19.&nbsp;

Pickton, 74, a former pig farmer from western Canada, was one of the country’s most notorious killers. Although he was convicted and sentenced for six murders, he was suspected of killing dozens of women.&nbsp;

“We are mindful that this offender’s case has had a devastating impact on communities in British Columbia and across the country,” said the Correctional Service of Canada.

Earlier this month, police spokesperson Hugues Beaulieu said that a 51-year-old inmate was in custody for the assault on Pickton.&nbsp;

<h2>Pickton’s case</h2>

In 2007, Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for killing drug addicts and sex workers and butchering their remains at his pig farm. &nbsp;

He was convicted of killing six women – Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Papin and Marnie Frey – whose partial remains were found on his ramshackle property near Vancouver’s suburb of Port Coquitlam.&nbsp;

While Pickton was charged with the murders of 26 women, the government prosecutors later dropped charges for an additional 20 murders after he was sentenced to life in prison.

The victims were among the 60 women who disappeared from Vancouver’s seediest, drug-infested Downtown Eastside neighbourhood over more than a decade until Pickton’s arrest in 2002.&nbsp;

The remains or DNA of 33 women were found on Pickton’s pig farm. He once also bragged about killing a total of 49 women to an undercover police officer.&nbsp;

During his trial, prosecution witness Andrew Bellwood said Pickton told him how he strangled his victims and fed their remains to his pigs, as per the Associated Press.

The testimony prompted health officials to issue a tainted meat advisory to neighbours who might have bought pork from Pickton’s farm amid concerns that the meat might have contained human remains.

The diplomatic ties between India and Canada witnessed an all-time low after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi of having a role in the killing of Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on the evening of June 18, 2023.

However, India has strongly rejected the allegations, calling them "baseless" and "absurd".

The chief of Canada's Security Intelligence Service cautioned the people against the use of TikTok stating that the data the application obtains from its users is "available to the government of China."&nbsp;

"My answer as director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is that there is a very clear strategy on the part of the government of China to be able to acquire personal information from anyone around the world," CBC News quoted CSIS Director David Vigneault as saying.

TikTok spokesperson in response said, that "these assertions are unsupported by evidence, and the fact is that TikTok has never shared Canadian user data with the Chinese government, nor would we if asked."

Earlier, in September last year, Canada ordered a national security review of a proposal that was put forward by TikTok to expand the short-form video hosting application's business in the country.

Vigneault said that he would also take part in the proposal's review and subsequently offer advice, reported CBC.

"We will continue to engage with Canadian officials and would welcome the opportunity to meet with CSIS to discuss how we protect the privacy and security of Canadians," the spokesperson added.

<h2>TikTok, ByteDance challenge potential US ban in court</h2>

This comes after TikTok and its parent firm ByteDance earlier this month filed a legal challenge against the US targeting a bill signed by President Joe Biden that would push the app to either face a ban in the United States or to be sold.

The development came almost two weeks after Biden passed a law giving the popular short-form video hosting service an ultimatum of 270 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the country.

TikTok argues that the bill signed by the US president was unconstitutional.

"For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than one billion people worldwide," said the suit by TikTok and ByteDance.

The lawsuit by the firm and the short-video sharing platform alleges that the move violates the First Amendment, charging that "Congress has made a law curtailing massive amounts of protected speech."

It further stated that the divestiture demanded for the short video app for it to be functional in the country is "simply not possible".

In another incident of falling space junk from the sky, a massive metal piece of space debris suddenly fell on a farm and was found by a farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada. The heavy piece of charred metal, which weighed 40 kilogrammes, was suspected to belong to space debris, with multiple layers of burned composite fibres and webbing, reported CBC. “But I had no idea. I don’t build spaceships for a living. I farm,” said farmer Barry Sawchuk, while speaking to CBC. Also Read: Massive collision of black holes took place in ancient space. As per the local reports, the charred metal was sent to a group of astronomy professors who traced the metal's journey which matched with a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft's reentry in February. On February 7, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft undocked from the ISS and landed over the Pacific Ocean. A crew of astronauts had returned to Earth from the spacecraft in a splashdown off the coast of Daytona, Florida. The spacecraft was made using an expendable trunk module and reusable crew capsule which is jettisoned prior to reentry of Dragon through Earth’s atmosphere. As per experts, the trunk module which was discarded before the reentry of the Axiom-3 mission crew in February may have landed on the Canadian farm. Another charred piece of metal had fallen on a farmland in Australia in July 2022 and the experts had suspected that it came from SpaceX’s Dragon trunk module. Amid the growing space industry, the risk of getting hit by a falling piece of spacecraft has increased. However, Canadian farmer Sawchuk is not very much concerned about the growing threat. He is planning to sell the piece of space junk and donate some of the profit to building a hockey rink in Saskatchewan, Sawchuk, as per the CBC. (With inputs from agencies)

Nobel Prize-winning&nbsp;Canadian writer Alice Munro, whose exquisitely crafted tales of the loves, ambitions and travails of small-town women in her native land made her a globally acclaimed master of the short story, has died at the age of 92, her publisher said on Tuesday.

Munro had died at her home in Port Hope, Ontario, said Kristin Cochrane, chief executive officer of McClelland &amp; Stewart.

"Alice's writing inspired countless writers...and her work leaves an indelible mark on our literary landscape," she said in a statement.

The Globe and Mail newspaper, citing family members, said Munro had died on Monday after suffering from dementia for at least a decade.

Munro published more than a dozen collections of short stories and was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013.

Her stories explored sex, yearning, discontent, ageing, moral conflict and other themes in rural settings with which she was intimately familiar - villages and farms in the Canadian province of Ontario. She was adept at fully developing complex characters within the limited pages of a short story.

"Alice Munro was a Canadian literary icon. For six decades, her short stories captivated hearts around Canada and the world," Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said on the X social media network.

Munro, who wrote about ordinary people with clarity and realism, was often likened to Anton Chekhov, the 19th century Russian known for his brilliant short stories - a comparison the Swedish Academy cited in honouring her with the Nobel Prize.

Calling her a "master of the contemporary short story," the Academy also said: "Her texts often feature depictions of everyday but decisive events, epiphanies of a kind, that illuminate the surrounding story and let existential questions appear in a flash of lightning."

In an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation after winning the Nobel, Munro said, "I think my stories have gotten around quite remarkably for short stories, and I would really hope that this would make people see the short story as an important art, not just something that you played around with until you'd got a novel written."

Her works included: "Dance of the Happy Shades" (1968), "Lives of Girls and Women" (1971), "Who Do You Think You Are?" (1978), "The Moons of Jupiter" (1982), "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage" (2001), "Runaway" (2004), "The View from Castle Rock" (2006), "Too Much Happiness" (2009) and "Dear Life" (2012).

The characters in her stories were often girls and women who lead seemingly unexceptional lives but struggle with tribulations ranging from sexual abuse and stifling marriages to repressed love and the ravages of ageing.

"Last month I reread all of Alice Munro's books. I felt the need to be close to her. Every time I read her is a new experience. Every time changes me. She will live forever," leading Canadian author Heather O'Neill said in a post on X.

Munro's story of a woman who starts losing her memory and agrees to enter a nursing home titled "The Bear Came Over the Mountain," from "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage," was adapted into the Oscar-nominated 2006 film "Away From Her," directed by fellow Canadian Sarah Polley.

<h2>'SHAME AND EMBARRASSMENT'</h2>

Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood, writing in the Guardian after Munro won the Nobel, summarized her work by saying: "Shame and embarrassment are driving forces for Munro's characters, just as perfectionism in the writing has been a driving force for her: getting it down, getting it right, but also the impossibility of that. Munro chronicles failure much more often than she chronicles success, because the task of the writer has failure built in."

American novelist Jonathan Franzen wrote in 2005, "Reading Munro puts me in that state of quiet reflection in which I think about my own life: about the decisions I've made, the things I've done and haven't done, the kind of person I am, the prospect of death."

The short story, a style more popular in the 19th and early 20th century, has long taken a back seat to the novel in popular tastes - and in attracting awards. But Munro was able to infuse her short stories with a richness of plot and depth of detail usually more characteristic of full-length novels.

"For years and years, I thought that stories were just practice, 'til I got time to write a novel. Then I found that they were all I could do and so I faced that. I suppose that my trying to get so much into stories has been a compensation," Munro told the New Yorker magazine in 2012.

She was the second Canadian-born writer to win the Nobel literature prize but the first with a distinctly Canadian identity. Saul Bellow, who won in 1976, was born in Quebec but raised in Chicago and was widely seen as an American writer.

Munro also won the Man Booker International Prize in 2009 and the Giller Prize - Canada's most high-profile literary award - twice.

Alice Laidlaw was born to a hard-pressed family of farmers on July 10, 1931, in Wingham, a small town in the region of southwestern Ontario that serves as the setting for many of her stories, and started writing in her teens.

Munro originally began writing short stories while a stay-at-home mother. She intended to someday write a novel, but said that with three children she was never able to find the time necessary. Munro began building a reputation when her stories started getting published in the New Yorker in the 1970s.

She married James Munro in 1951 and moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where the two ran a bookstore. They had four daughters - one died just hours after being born - before divorcing in 1972. Afterward, Munro moved back to Ontario. Her second husband, geographer Gerald Fremlin, died in April 2013.

Munro in 2009 revealed she had undergone heart bypass surgery and had been treated for cancer.

Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate in four suburbs around the Canadian oil sands city of Fort McMurray due to a large wildfire that is reportedly approaching the region.

The wildfire, raging due to tinder-dry conditions and high winds, remains a persistent threat for the city in western Canada's Alberta since last week. The fire is just 13 km or 8 miles away to the south- west.

Alberta Wildfire Information Officer Josee St-Onge said the blaze grew significantly on Tuesday (May 14) and added that the winds from the southwest were going as high as 40 km/hr (24.8 mph).

"Unfortunately, these are not favourable winds for us and the fire will continue to advance towards the town until we see a wind shift," she told an online media briefing.

"We are seeing extreme fire behavior. Smoke columns are developing and the skies are covered in smoke... firefighters have been pulled from the fire line for safety reasons."

The fire has grown in size and is now more than 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres), officials said.

A 36-year-old man of Indian origin has been arrested in Canada for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar gold heist at Toronto's main airport. This arrest occurred nearly a month after the arrest of five other people&nbsp;linked to the theft, which has been the largest in the country's history.

On April 17, 2023, a cargo container containing over 22 million Canadian dollars' worth of gold bars and foreign currency was stolen from a secure storage facility using counterfeit documentation, as reported by Peel Regional Police. The stolen goods had been transported via an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Shortly after the plane landed, the cargo was taken off and moved to another spot on the airport grounds. It was reported missing to the police the next day.

On May 6, 2024, Archit Grover was arrested and charged at the Toronto airport as he arrived from India, according to the police.

Earlier, the police had issued a warrant for his arrest across Canada.

He is accused of theft exceeding $5,000 and conspiracy to commit a serious crime, stated the police in a Thursday release.

Grover was detained for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. Additionally, he is facing charges related to firearms in the US.

Thousands of people in Western Canada fled their homes on Sunday (May 12) as the season's wildfires began earlier than usual. Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement that extends from British Columbia to Ontario, the news agency Reuters reported early Monday. The government, meanwhile, said that evacuation orders were issued over the weekend for small towns in the Alberta and Manitoba provinces, while smoke from wildfires drifted over much of western Canada, lowering air quality dramatically. Fort Nelson among worst affected regions British Columbia's Fort Nelson town was among the worst affected regions. Speaking to the news agency AFP, NRRM Mayor Rob Fraser said that fires were all around Fort Nelson from the west to the northeast. Also read | Canada may face wildfires worse than worst-ever 2023 inferno, government warns Fraser urged hundreds of people who stayed put to get out of the town. AFP reported that a fire covering an area of 6,200 acres was burning 3.5 kilometres to the west of Fort Nelson. Nearly 3,500 were evacuated by Friday evening. Fraser told the news agency on Sunday that cooler weather overnight helped slow the advance of the fire but strong winds later picked up in the afternoon, which could fan the flames. In Alberta, 43 fires were burning, including one 15 kilometres from the town of Fort McMurray, forcing people to prepare for possible evacuations. Evacuation alerts were in place in several municipalities of Alberta. Though there was no immediate risk, the alerts ensured that residents were prepared to evacuate if conditions changed. Another catastrophic wildfire season The government has warned that Canada would face another "catastrophic" wildfire season as it forecast higher-than-normal spring and summer temperatures across much of the country. An evacuation alert has been issued for Fort McMurray, Alberta, as an out-of-control fire rages southwest of the major Canadian oil town, making it among the first actions ahead of the wildfire season.

In a notice late on Friday, the Alberta government said the wildfire danger is "extreme" in the Fort McMurray Forest Area and out of control at 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) in size.

India pillories Canada for ‘glorifying violence’ after Khalistani imageries displayed at nagar kirtan parade

A Canadian man facing charges of murdering four Indigenous women has admitted to the killings. His lawyers argue he has a mental disorder that contradicts criminal responsibility.

Jeremy Skibicki is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of four women - Rebecca Contois, Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran and an unidentified woman, who was named Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) by Indigenous leaders.

Skibicki has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

The unexpected development on Monday (May 6), prompted a shift in the trial format. Crown prosecutors in Winnipeg are now pursuing a judge-alone trial, which could begin as soon as Wednesday (May 8). As a result, the 12 jurors selected last month will be dismissed.&nbsp;

“At this point, the accused is now admitting that he killed all four women, and that is a new development,” prosecutor Chris Vanderhooft told Manitoba’s court of king’s bench.

Skibicki had&nbsp;left the bodies of two of his known victims at Winnipeg’s Prairie Green landfill but police initially said that they did not have the resources to search the refuse at the facility, much of which is buried under tonnes of clay.

The admission from Skibicki’s lawyers comes a day after the national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls – also known as “red dress day”.

A 2019 report labelled the disappearances and murders of at least 4,000 Indigenous women and girls in recent decades as "genocide."&nbsp;

However, it is unclear if Monday’s revelations in court will give police and families a sense of where the bodies of Harris and Myran might be located, as well as the identity of Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe.

Crown prosecutors in Winnipeg are now pursuing a judge-alone trial, which could begin as soon as Wednesday (May 8). As a result, the 12 jurors selected last month will be dismissed. “At this point, the accused is now admitting that he killed all four women, and that is a new development,” prosecutor Chris Vanderhooft told Manitoba’s court of king’s bench. Skibicki had left the bodies of two of his known victims at Winnipeg’s Prairie Green landfill but police initially said that they did not have the resources to search the refuse at the facility, much of which is buried under tonnes of clay. The admission from Skibicki’s lawyers comes a day after the national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls – also known as “red dress day”. However, it is unclear if Monday’s revelations in court will give police and families a sense of where the bodies of Harris and Myran might be located, as well as the identity of Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe. Canada: Man admits killing four indigenous women

India has strongly rejected a report in the Washington Post that has named a former Indian Intelligence Officer for plotting to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil.

Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Canada, a controversial rally was held in Ontario on Sunday where pro-Khalistan sentiments were openly expressed. The event, part of the annual Nagar Kirtan Parade organised by the Ontario Gurudwara Committee (OGC), saw a significant presence of Khalistani supporters chanting anti-India slogans. The parade route from Malton to Rexdale featured multiple Khalistan-themed floats adorned with flags and slogans. Several floats carried provocative imagery, including one portraying the Indian prime minister behind bars. Another displayed a map of Khalistan, advocating for a referendum on the contentious issue. The event saw inflammatory speeches delivered by Paramjit Mand of the Dal Khalsa, who openly issued threats to Indian leaders and challenged Indian sovereignty. Avtar Singh Pannu, a listed terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) and a member of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), added fuel to the fire with provocative slogans, calling for support for an upcoming referendum in Calgary. The event shows the Trudeau govt remains unperturbed by India's concerns over space being given to Khalistani extremist elements. In the aftermath of the development, India summoned Canada's deputy high commissioner to lodge a strong protest. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar recently expressed concern over Canada's handling of the matter, particularly regarding the legitimacy given to extremist elements under the guise of free speech. Watch: New Delhi summons Canada envoy as Khalistani slogans chanted at event attended by Trudeau "In Canada, the party in power in Canada, other parties have given these kinds of extremism, separatism a certain legitimacy in the name of free speech," remarked Jaishankar over the weekend. He warned of potential consequences, asserting, "It's not a one-way street, a pushback will come." Jaishankar also highlighted the issue of certain individuals with organised links from Punjab being allowed entry into Canada, despite being wanted criminals. Notably, Canada has been accusing India of being involved in the killing of Canadian national and Khalistan supporter Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Despite the accusations, no direct link or evidence has been provided by Canada in the matter.

Ontario hosts pro-Khalistan rally as relations between Canada and India continue to sour

The diplomatic ties between India and Canada are currently witnessing an all-time low after Ottawa accused New Delhi's involvement in the killing Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June last year.

India, however, has strongly rebuffed Canada's claim that Indian agents were involved in the murder, dubbing them "baseless" and "absurd".

Nijjar was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on the evening of June 18, 2023.

He was designated a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2020.

<h2>'Safe haven for terrorists'</h2>

There have been many instances in the past where India has raised concerns to Canada about the growing sentiment of separatism and the Khalistani threat.

Earlier, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had underlined how terrorists were being provided a safe haven abroad, calling for the government of Canada to act upon it.

"Terrorism is being funded and supported by our western neighbour Pakistan, but the issue of safe havens and places to operate are being provided abroad, including in Canada," the then MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said.&nbsp;

"We would want the Canadian government to not provide safe havens to terrorists and to take action against those who are facing terrorism charges or send them here to face charges," he added.

He then asserted that Canada was one of those countries that needed to contemplate its international reputation.

"If you talk about reputational damage, it is Canada that needs to look at its growing reputation as a place, as a safe haven for terrorists, for extremists, and for organized crime," Bagchi said.
