Shares of Insurance Australia Group Ltd. surged as much as 9 per cent on Friday after securing reinsurance protection from a unit of Berkshire Hathaway and Canada Life Reinsurance to shield itself from swings in financial markets for five years.

The stock climbed as high as A$7.280, its highest level since January 24, 2020, by 00:49 GMT. With that steep rise, securing the status of a top gainer in the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index.

The Sydney-based insurer said such reinsurance agreements would add an extra layer of protection of up to A$680 million ($451.86 million) per annum, amounting to A$2.8 billion in a span of five years. As per IAG, this reinsurance would put a lid on natural perils costs of A$1.28 billion in FY25.

The agreements would "provide greater certainty over the cost of natural perils cover for customers, stabilise earnings and reduce capital requirements," said IAG Managing Director and CEO Nick Hawkins. This would put the company itself and generally all its stakeholders on a more predictable financial footing.

It additionally reaffirmed its full-year insurance profit and margin goal at the higher end of its outlook variety. As indicated by Citi experts, IAG's forecast is broadly in line with the brokerage's forecasts of 14.8 per cent, and Visible Alpha consensus forecast of 14.6 per cent, while suggesting "the benefit to reported margin is likely due to favourable weather."

IAG also reiterated fiscal 2024 gross written premium growth will be in line with the "low-double digit" growth guidance updated in February, indicating that the company is very confident of delivering another strong performance in fiscal 2024 as well.

IAG has successfully completed its strategic reinsurance deals, increasing the value of its stocks and moving the firm toward better financial positioning. Substantial reinsurance protection in place insulates it against natural perils and places it on a fairground to stabilise its earnings. IAG exhibits a rather forward-looking disposition, simply underscoring its commitment to protecting its financial health and delivering safe results to shareholders.

The Canadian appeals court has decided to keep Bhagat Singh Brar and Parvkar Singh Dulai, both supporters of Khalistani extremist ideology, on the country's no-fly list. Brar and Dulai were placed on the no-fly list under relevant sections of Canada's Secure Air Travel Act, which allows the Canadian government to restrict air travel for individuals deemed to pose a threat of committing terrorism offenses. The decision was taken a few years ago, but both decided to appeal.

Just days before this ruling, Canadian parliamentarians paid tribute to Hardeep Nijjar, a listed terrorist in India, on the first anniversary of his death. His name has appeared on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) blacklist. He has travelled to Pakistan as well and keeps close associations with Pakistan-based Khalistani extremists.

Dulai has been seen with Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh, who is the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). Dulai’s activities include meetings with Paranjit Singh Panjwar, Chief of the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF), and Lakhbir Singh Rode, leader of the International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF). Both are banned terror organisations in India. He is also associated with Khalistan centres which are aimed at mobilising the community in Canada to support the separatist ideology.

A significant cyber outage affecting CDK Global, a major provider of retail technology and software for automobile dealerships, has extended into its second day, causing widespread disruptions across the United States and Canada.

The incident, which began on Wednesday, has forced CDK to proactively shut down most of its systems as a precautionary measure. The company is actively working to restore its services and normalise operations for affected dealerships, though the process may take several days according to communications sent to some dealers.

The scale of the outage is substantial, with CDK serving over 15,000 retail locations across North America. While the exact number of affected dealerships has not been disclosed, the impact is being felt by various automotive brands. For instance, BMW North America confirmed that a portion of its dealer network has been affected by the outage.

This incident highlights the critical role that software providers like CDK play in the modern automotive retail landscape. Dealerships rely heavily on these systems for various aspects of their operations, from inventory management to customer relationship management and financial transactions.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has emphasised that dealers are committed to protecting customer information and are actively seeking details from CDK about the nature and scope of the cyber incident to respond appropriately.

The outage has also affected some dealerships' communication systems. For example, Holman, a privately owned vehicle dealer, reported that its phone system has been impacted by the CDK outage.

CDK Global, which was acquired by investment firm Brookfield Business Partners in April 2022 for USD 6.41 billion, was the last major publicly traded provider of software to auto dealers and manufacturers before going private. Canada parliament observes 'moment of silence' in memory of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Nijjar

Why is Canada honouring a Khalistani terrorist? The Canadian Parliament marked the one-year anniversary of the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar by holding a moment of silence. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Why is Canada honouring a Khalistani terrorist?

In yet another show of support for anti-India separatism, Canada's parliament on Tuesday (June 18) held a moment of silence to mark the first anniversary of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's death. The move is similar to one previously held by India's western neighbour Pakistan, who used the platform of its National Assembly in Islamabad to valourise terrorist Burhan Wani.

Nijjar was designated a terrorist by New Delhi for fostering separatism in India's Punjab state and related acts of terrorism. He was the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and was killed in a targeted shooting in Canada's Surrey, outside a British Columbia Gurudwara on June 18 last year.

The three countries said Moscow was trying to undermine Moldova’s pro-western president, Maia Sandu, before the next presidential election and referendum on EU membership. Both votes are due on 20 October.

The former Soviet nation bordering Ukraine has long feared Russian meddling in its internal affairs, particularly in the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transnistria and the autonomous southern region of Gagauzia. Sandu's administration has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow.

According to the UK, US and Canadian governments, Russian actors were seeking to foment negative public view of Sandu, western governments and the prospect of Moldovan membership of the EU.

Notably, Sandu has been president since 2020, when she was elected with 57.7% of the vote in the final runoff.

The three governments accused Russia of actively using disinformation and propaganda online, on the air, and on their streets to further their objectives of “degrading public confidence in Moldova’s ability to secure itself and maintain rule of law”.

The three countries further said that if Sandu were re-elected, “there is reason to believe Moscow will work to provoke protests”.

They said they were working closely with the Moldovan government and had already sanctioned actors involved, with further sanctions being considered.

“We will support Moldova and the Moldovan people as they manage Kremlin interference and the impacts of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the statement from the UK, US and Canada said.

“We strongly support Moldova’s democratic, economic, security, and anticorruption reforms and deepening European integration."
