Canada has finally admitted that India didn't interfere in the previous elections won by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. An official probe released its report on a matter related to foreign meddling in elections and refuted the unsubstantiated claims. The probe, however, mentioned China's influence in the elections in 2017 and 2021.

"I do not believe that during the 2021 election, we saw evidence of the Government of India using those tools in the campaign," a polling official informed the investigation panel.

Earlier this year in January, a Bloomberg report claimed that Canada will examine whether or not India interfered in the national elections in 2019 and 2021. Trudeau's Liberal Party won both elections.

But the claims had put the prime minister under pressure from opposition legislators and he set up a commission into the alleged foreign interference, including by India.

New Delhi had strongly rejected alleged linkage to the democratic process of Canada. India's foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, even accused Canada of meddling in India's internal affairs.

"We have seen media reports, Canadian Commission inquiring into foreign interferences...we strongly reject such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections, it is not govt of India's policy to interfere in the democratic process of other countries, in fact, quite on the reverse it is Canada who has been interfering in our internal affairs," Jaiswal said in February's presser.

No Indian interference found in 2021 Canadian elections that Trudeau won, probe report reveals

An investigation by Canada's domestic spy agency has found that China allegedly interfered in the country's last two elections. At an official probe on Monday (Apr 8), the agency presented the "firmest" evidence of suspected Chinese meddling in Canadian politics.

China's 'clandestine' operations

A commission set up by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was shown a slide containing excerpts from a February 2023 briefing of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) which said: "We know that the PRC (Peoples' Republic of China) clandestinely and deceptively interfered in both the 2019 and 2021 elections".

Incidentally, the elections held in 2019 and 2021 were both won by Trudeau's Liberal Party.

Reuters reports that the Canadian leader set up the commission to look into foreign interference under pressure from opposition leaders about media reports alleging Chinese interference.

China has denied the allegation.

"State actors are able to conduct foreign interference successfully in Canada because there are few legal or political consequences. FI is therefore low-risk and high-reward," said CSIS.

Global News previously reported the existence of this CSIS assessment.

Not done enough

Intelligence analysts and the Conservatives blame Trudeau's government for not doing enough to combat Chinese interference.

The PM is due to testify in front of the commission on Wednesday.

Erin O'Toole, leader of the Conservatives during the 2021 campaign, as per Reuters, estimates that Chinese interference cost his party up to nine seats. However, he added that the interference had not changed the course of the election.

A legislator with the left-leaning New Democrats told the inquiry that her criticism of Beijing led to the end of event invitations from the politically influential ethnic Chinese community.

Canada's population reached a record high of 40.77 million in 2023. This surge, according to Statistics Canada, was mainly driven by temporary immigration.

As per recently published data, in 2023, the country added 1.27 million people to its population — up 3.2 per cent from the previous year. This just so happens to be Canada's highest growth since 1957.

"In 2023, the vast majority (97.6 per cent) of Canada's population growth came from international migration (both permanent and temporary immigration) and the remaining portion (2.4 per cent) came from natural increase," said Statscan in a statement.

How many of these are Indians?

Indian migrants account for a huge part of Canada's immigrant population.

As per the Canada Visa website, "Over 120,000 Indians settle in Canada as permanent residents every year and Canada is now home to one of the largest Indian diasporas in the world."

Between 2013 and 2022, the number of Indians immigrating to Canada, as per reports, more than tripled.

The number of Indians availing permanent citizenship in Canada in 2013 was 32,828. In 2022, this number increased by 260 per cent to 118,095.

In 2023, partly due to tensions between India and Canada, the number of study permits fell by 41 per cent.

According to data from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the number of applications for December fell from 16,796 in 2022 to 6,329 in 2023.

Despite that, Indians continue to be the largest group of immigrants, making up for a significant portion of the estimated 2,661,784 non-permanent residents living in Canada as of January 1, 2024.

As per the latest Statscan data, 2,332,886 of these were permit holders and their family members, and 328,898 were asylum claimants with or without work or study permits.

The effects of immigrant influx

As per Reuters, the influx of immigrants has been linked to a housing shortage, which has pushed house prices, bringing affordability, to a new low.

This, as per the report, has also hurt Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's approval ratings.

Furthermore, according to economists and the Bank of Canada, population growth has impacted Canada's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and productivity levels.

Canada's population touched a record high of 40.77 million in 2023, largely driven by temporary immigration, Statistics Canada said on Wednesday. The country added 1.27 million people in 2023, up 3.2% from the previous year - marking the highest growth since 1957.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

The influx of immigrants has been blamed for a housing shortage that has pushed up house prices and sent affordability to new lows, hurting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's approval ratings. The population growth has also pulled down the country's gross domestic product per capita figures as seen in the last quarter as well as productivity levels, economists and the Bank of Canada have said.

KEY QUOTES

"In 2023, the vast majority (97.6%) of Canada's population growth came from international migration (both permanent and temporary immigration) and the remaining portion (2.4%) came from natural increase," Statscan said in a statement.

CONTEXT

Canada has heavily relied on immigration to boost its labor force and economic growth, with almost a quarter of its population being non-native born Canadian residents in 2021, according to IMF's 2021 report. That is the highest level among the G7 nations.

But in the last few months Trudeau's Liberal government has tried to counter pressure through measures to cap the number of international students and non-permanent residents that can come into Canada each year.

BY THE NUMBERS

It is estimated that 2,661,784 non-permanent residents were living in Canada on January 1, 2024, Statscan data showed. Among them, 2,332,886 were permit holders and their family members living with them, and 328,898 were asylum claimants with or without work or study permits.

Quakes suggest the ocean floor is ripping apart: Scientists

Nearly 2,000 earthquakes hit a spot off the coast of Canada in a single day, which as per scientists was a hint that new oceanic crust is likely to be created through deep sea magmatic rupture.

These earthquakes are not a serious threat to people and are comparatively small and centred on a spot known as the Endeavour site, which is 150 miles off the coast of Vancouver Island.

This specific spot has various hydrothermal vents and is present on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. At this place, the ocean floor also spread apart.

Doctoral candidate in marine geophysics at the University of Washington Zoe Krauss said that the area is not part of the subduction zone, which is a region where one tectonic plate has been sinking into the mantle below another plate.

"Mid-ocean ridges aren't actually capable of producing that large of earthquakes, not too far above a magnitude five. This is not going to trigger 'the big one' on the subduction zone," said Krauss, while speaking to Live Science.

Scientifically, the earthquakes have been interesting since they can reveal details regarding ways in which the ocean floor pulls apart and the new crust gets formed, said Krauss.

Juan de Fuca plate and the Pacific plate pulling apart at site

The Juan de Fuca plate and the Pacific plate have been pulling apart at the endeavour site, as per the scientists.

This pulling apart leads to the formation of long, linear fault lines on the Earth's crust and also thins it which allows magma to rise up. After the magma reaches the surface, it slowly cools and hardens and a new ocean crust is formed.

The Endeavour site is continuously monitored under the North-East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments (NEPTUNE) which is run by Ocean Networks Canada.

From 2018, the region has remained more seismically active, said Krauss. However, on March 6, the activity escalated as at least 200 small earthquakes rocked the seafloor every hour. The researchers detected a total of nearly 1,850 quakes in one day.

"The vast majority are less than magnitude one. They’re these little pops. But it’s pretty cool because it allows us to track where things are happening, where things are breaking and where things are moving around," Krauss said.

He added that the quakes most likely occurred because the seafloor was stretched to its maximum extent and a great amount of stress was built-up.

Canada will halt future arms sales to Israel, said the country’s foreign affairs minister Mélanie Joly, on Tuesday (Mar 19) following a non-binding vote in the House of Commons. The NDP, which supports Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority government, introduced the motion following frustration over what they said was his failure to do enough to protect civilians in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The motion passed Monday (Mar 18) night after a last-minute deal between Trudeau’s Liberal Party and the NDP. The Canadian government previously said that it had paused issuing military export permits to Israel and it would be assessing applications on “a case-by-case basis”.

After the motion was passed, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, a lobby group, called it “misguided” as it does not “effectively address the humanitarian crisis” in Gaza or “liberate Gazans from the tyrannical rule” of Hamas.

Since Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, the Trudeau government has asserted Israel’s right to defend itself but has eventually grown critical of its current assault on Gaza.

Dowden said that the British government is “continuously” urging Israel to abide by international humanitarian law and raised concerns about getting aid into Gaza.

“That’s why we are calling for an immediate ceasefire to allow that aid in, and crucially, the hostages to come out,” he told the news agency Reuters.

The United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk on Tuesday said Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid for Gaza may amount to a starvation tactic and could be a war crime.

The UK deputy PM went on to stress his support for Israel, saying there is a risk that the world is forgetting the horrors of October 7, when Hamas launched attacks and according to Israeli officials killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians.

“I continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself, not only for the sake of Israel but also I think around the world we should be standing up to this kind of barbarism,” said Dowden.

Subsequently, he also noted that Israel should “show restraint and proportionality in the way that they prosecute the legitimate war against Hamas.”

Indian man kills wife a week after reaching Canada, calls family to inform

An Indian-origin couple along with their teenage daughter lost their lives in a "suspicious" fire that gutted their home in Canada's Ontario province last week, said the police on Friday (Mar 15).

An Indian-origin couple along with their teenage daughter lost their lives in a "suspicious" fire that gutted their home in Canada's Ontario province last week, said the police on Friday (Mar 15). According to the press release issued by the Peel Police, the family's home, located at the Big Sky Way and Van Kirk Drive area of Brampton was engulfed by fire on March 7. After the fire was put under control, the investigators found the human remains inside the gutted house, however, they could not ascertain the number of people killed at the time. On Friday (Mar 15), the authorities identified the charred remains as those belonging to three family members: 51-year-old Rajiv Warikoo; his wife, 47-year-old Shilpa Kotha; and their 16-year-old daughter, Mahek Warikoo. Also Read: Indian-origin student froze to death after being denied entry into US nightclub Fire 'not accidental', says police The police officials informed that the family was living at the address before the fire broke out. On Friday (Mar 15), Peel police Constable Taryn Young said that the fire appeared 'suspicious', reported the CTV news channel. "At this time, we are investigating this with our homicide bureau, and we are deeming this as suspicious as the Ontario Fire Marshal has deemed that this fire was not accidental," Young was quoted as saying in the report. "There's not much left to it," she said while speaking about the possible cause of the fire. "Looking into something like that as a fire marshal, I'm sure it's very tough when there is not much left to look at. But we are exhausting all avenues," she added. Investigation into 'mysterious fire' incident continues Kenneth Yousaf, the neighbour of the deceased family, said that for 15 years the family was living at the same address and they never noticed any problems with them. He said that one of his family members alerted him about the fire, after hearing a big "bang". "When we came out, the house was on fire. So sad. Within a few hours, everything was down to the ground," said Yousaf, as quoted in the report. Watch: Indian-origin student froze to death after being denied entry into US nightclub The police, in its press release, said that the fire incident and death of the three family members are being investigated and anyone who has any additional information should come forward. "The circumstances surrounding the house fire remains the focus of an active investigation, and anyone with information or video footage (dashcam or otherwise) is urged to contact Homicide detectives," said the police. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Friday (Mar 15) said that he thinks about quitting his “crazy job” every day but plans to finish his term ahead of the country’s election which is supposed to be held in 2025. This comes as recent polls indicated that he and his Liberal Party are becoming increasingly unpopular among Canadians.

‘Crazy job’

“I could not be the man I am and abandon the fight at this point,” said the Canadian PM, in an interview with French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada where he also spoke about the personal sacrifices of his job.

When asked if the Canadian PM had thought about quitting, he laughed and said, “I think about quitting every day. It’s a crazy job I’m doing, making the personal sacrifices.”

He added, “Of course, it’s super tough, it’s super not great at times.”

Trudeau’s Liberal Party to lose?

Recent polls have shown growing dissatisfaction for Trudeau’s Liberal Party-led government with Canadians citing issues like affordability of housing and the rise in cost of living.

Canadians are also reportedly getting tired of Trudeau, 52, who first took office nearly a decade ago ending the almost 10-year Conservative party rule.

Ottawa is supposed to hold elections by October 2025 and if recent polls are anything to go by, Liberals would be crushed by the right-of-centre party in the upcoming polls.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Friday (Mar 15) said that he thinks about quitting his “crazy job” every day but plans to finish his term ahead of the country’s election which is supposed to be held in 2025.

‘Crazy job’ “I could not be the man I am and abandon the fight at this point,” said the Canadian PM, in an interview with French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada where he also spoke about the personal sacrifices of his job. When asked if the Canadian PM had thought about quitting, he laughed and said, “I think about quitting every day. It’s a crazy job I’m doing, making the personal sacrifices.” He added, “Of course, it’s super tough, it’s super not great at times.” Also Read | ‘You can’t give up on principles’: US envoy Garcetti preaches New Delhi over CAA In 2023, the Canadian PM and his wife Sophie announced they were separating after 18 years of marriage. Many in Trudeau’s party and his allies have reportedly suggested that it’s time for him to leave as his decreasing popularity may be dragging the Liberal Party down with him. In recent times, one of the most heated debates among gender activists, humanists and intellectuals has been over the vocabulary that we use to differentiate between a male and a female. With changing times, when gender has not remained limited to just male or female; and more rungs have been added to the ladder of gender and sex, it becomes crucial to evolve our vocabularies too.

In light of one such event, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled to opt for “person with a vagina” over “woman” in a recent sexual assault case.

The top court judge, Justice Sheilah Martin pointed out that referring to the alleged victim as a “woman” by a lower court judge was “problematic”. She argued that the lower court should have used more appropriate terms like “person with a vagina”.

‘Person with a vagina’ and not ‘a woman’: Canadian SC ruled in a recent sexual assault case

The case that came to the Canadian top court was that of Charles Kruk, who was allegedly involved in a 2017 charge of sexual assault against 34-year-old Maple Ridge.

“Mr. Kruk found the complainant intoxicated, lost, and distressed one night in downtown Vancouver,” reads the background to the case. “He decided to take her to his house, and connected with the complainant’s parents by phone.”

The complainant testified that she woke up to find that her pants were off, and Kruk was vaginally penetrating her. Kruk testified that the complainant’s pants were off because she had removed them herself after spilling water on them earlier in the night and that what she assumed was a rape was actually just Kruk startling her awake.

Justice Martin was of the opinion that instead of using the word “woman”, the complainant, Ridge, was addressed as “person with a vagina”, as it could have created confusion about whom the word was referring to.

Martin, though, does not specify why the word “woman” is confusing, but the next passage in her decision refers to the complainant as a “person with a vagina.”

Notably, not one person in the entire case is identified as transgender, and the complainant is referred to throughout as a “she.”

Canada announced a national security review of TikTok's proposal to expand its short-video app business within the country earlier in September, as stated by the industry ministry on Thursday (March 14).

The potential outcomes of this review vary, ranging from Canada requiring TikTok to implement mitigation measures to potentially blocking the expansion altogether, which could contribute to the company's existing challenges.

On Wednesday, the US House passed a bill mandating TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest the app's US assets or face a ban. This legislative action represents the latest response from Washington to address national security concerns about China, spanning various sectors from connected vehicles to advanced artificial intelligence chips to infrastructure components at US ports.

The Canadian review, as clarified by the industry ministry's statement, solely focuses on TikTok's investment plan. Consequently, it is unlikely to result in an outright ban akin to the proposed action in the United States.

A government spokesperson acknowledged that Canada is closely monitoring developments related to the proposed US legislation but refrained from commenting on the specifics of Canada's review, emphasising that it is unrelated to the US bill.

Under Canadian legislation, the government has the authority to evaluate potential national security risks associated with foreign investments, such as the TikTok proposal. However, the law prohibits disclosing the details of such investments.

Last year, Canada prohibited TikTok from government-issued devices, citing an "unacceptable" level of risk to privacy and security. Additionally, Canada's privacy commissioner is conducting an investigation into TikTok's practices regarding the collection, usage, and disclosure of personal information.
