According to experts, states like California will receive more than eight trillion gallons of rain during the cyclone.

What is a Bomb Cyclone?

Bomb Cyclones are extreme winter storms which lead to sudden drops in temperatures within 24 hours after their arrival. It is expected that the weather system in a single day will drop the pressure by around 70 millibars, reaching as low as 942 millibars.

The name Bomb Cyclones was coined by meteorologists in the 1980s who connected the intensive weather change with bomb detonation.

A little girl whose pet goat was taken away from her, auctioned off and then slaughtered for meat has won a court case that orders California sheriff’s deputies to pay the girl's family $300,000.

The goat named Cedar was given to the nine-year-old by her mother Jessica Long in 2022. At the time, her daughter was enrolled in a youth development programme in California.

The family then entered Cedar into the Shasta County District Fair junior livestock where animals are also auctioned off for meat. However, the family didn't want to go through with it and told the fair’s officials that the girl did not wish to auction Cedar off.

But the fair association refused to let them withdraw the goat, citing their rules. California State Senator Brian Dahle placed the winning bid of $902, of which the fair got $63 while the rest was supposed to go to the girl’s family.

According to court documents, the girl refused to leave the goat and cried next to its pen. Long then took the goat with her and offered to pay for any losses. The family took Cedar 200 miles away to a farm in Sonoma County to keep it safe.

The fair officials threatened the family with consequences, with a fair association official saying that Long would be charged with grand theft if she did not return the goat.

The mother pleaded with the officials to let the girl keep the goat while they could keep the money from the sale. Long also talked to Dahle about the matter. His representatives said they were fine with her efforts to save the goat from slaughter and even waived his rights to the animal.

Girl had lost 3 grandparents in a year

Long wrote a letter to fair officials, saying that the girl had lost three grandparents in the past year and they did not want her to suffer more. However, the officials paid no heed to her cries.

Shasta County Sheriff’s Department obtained a warrant for the search and seizure of the animal at the Bleating Hearts Farm and Sanctuary in Napa County. They drove to Napa Valley for 10 hours but did not find the goat there. They travelled to another farm for which they did not have a warrant, but anyway searched the property and took the goat away.

The family later filed a case against the deputies, saying they had violated the law.

Advancing Law for Animals, a non-profit that represented the family, issued a statement, saying the goat’s story "reflects the broader issue of perceived government overreach in handling personal pets."

Vem Miller, 49, the man wrongfully accused of attempting to assassinate former United States President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in the US state of California last week has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff who levelled the accusations.

Miller was arrested on Saturday (Oct 12) for possessing firearms outside Trump's rally despite having a VIP pass to attend the event. He alleged that the Riverside County Sheriff, Chad Bianco, "intentionally, maliciously and with a blatant disregard for the truth" framed him to be viewed as a 'heroic sheriff' who saved the former US president's life.

"Riverside police engaged in deliberate and wrongful conduct and compromised police protocol, violating Miller’s constitutional rights for the purpose of promoting and engaging in a meritless and gratuitous sensational story," reads the lawsuit.

Miller has filed 10 claims in the federal lawsuit which also states that despite the FBI and Secret Service not perceiving him as a threat, the police officers did not believe him and continued to make "preposterous allegations" and "holding press conferences" to further the false narrative.

Who is Vem Miller, the man arrested near Trump rally over assassination suspicion?

The largest lake in California, the Salton Sea, has a "white gold" mine, which is a treasure worth nearly $540 billion, at its bottom.

Scientists were studying the largest lake as part of research funded by the Department of Energy.

The aim of the study is to discover how much lithium, also called "white gold due to its white sand-like appearance", is present at the bottom of the lake.

The lithium is present in such huge quantities that if extracted, it will be able to create batteries for as many as 382 million electric vehicles. The creation of so many batteries will make the United States the leading nation in chemical.

Speaking about the discovery, a geochemistry professor at the University of California and one of the 22 authors of the study, Michael McKibben, said, "This is one of the largest lithium brine deposits in the world. This could make the United States completely self-sufficient in lithium and stop importing it through China."

Governor of California Gavin Newsom had earlier called the Salton Lake as the "Saudi Arabia of lithium". The discovery has made the lake the world's largest source of lithium.

Will scientists be able to extract lithium from the lake?

Speaking to KJZZ radio, LA Times climate journalist Sammy Roth said, "They found that there's potentially enough lithium down there to supply batteries for 382 million electric vehicles, which is more, more vehicles than there are on the road in the United States today. So, if we could get all that lithium, that'd be huge."

However, it will not be easy to extract lithium from the lake and it will have its own dangers.

As reported by SFGATE, it will not be easy to extract lithium from the lake and it will require "geothermal production wells to extract the lithium-rich brine from thousands of feet below the earth’s surface, and once the lithium is dissolved from the brine, the liquid is pumped back underground."

The drilling can also impact 180,000 people who live near the lake. It can also affect the water supply which comes from the Colorado River.

Two people who made an emergency landing on a southern California highway following an engine failure landed into another trouble after escaping one.

An instructor pilot and his student passenger were in the aircraft and after it landed, both of them were arrested for smuggling drugs, the police said.

NBC San Diego reported that the pilot was Gabriel Leon Breit, 21, accompanied by 36-year-old Troy Othneil Smith. Breit called officials around 1:45 am (local time) on Thursday morning and told them that the Piper Cherokee Pathfinder was experiencing engine trouble and he needed to land on State Route 76 in Oceanside.

The aircraft landed safely and both of them escaped unhurt. However, it seems like their ordeal had just started as the eagle-eyed police officials noticed one of them hiding a backpack in the brush on the side of the road.

Oceanside Police Assistant Chief Taurino Valdovinos said at a news conference that both of them were detained. Smith was found to be holding a small amount of cocaine, while a kilo of the drug was discovered in the backpack.

Breit and Smith have been charged with drug trafficking.

"It doesn’t surprise me. I think we have narcotics coming into our country in various ways, but I think the surprising part is the emergency landing and how we came across it," Valdovinos told reporters.

Both of them had hired the aircraft after which they flew out of Oceanside on Wednesday afternoon and stopped in the Phoenix area for a short period of time. They were returning to Oceanside the same night but were forced to make the emergency landing.

NBC San Diego reported the owner of the plane saying that he rents out the craft through a flying club called Plus One Flyers. A private pilot’s license and a high performance aircraft sign-off are needed to charter his plane.

The owner, who wasn't named, said he came to know about the landing at 6:30 am (local time) and later learned of the drug arrests through news outlets.

"You just can’t write this stuff," the owner said. "Unbelievable. Unbelievable that this is what people do."

California has issued a formal apology for its involvement in slavery and the lasting effects it has had on Black residents, following the signing of a new law by Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday.

This legislation is part of a wider reparations package designed to address the racial inequalities African Americans have faced due to historical policies.

Governor Newsom, a Democrat, said, “The state of California accepts responsibility for the role we played in promoting, facilitating, and permitting the institution of slavery, as well as its enduring legacy of persistent racial disparities. Building on decades of work, California is now taking another important step forward in recognising the grave injustices of the past – and making amends for the harms caused”

The governor has also approved additional measures, including stronger protections against hair discrimination in sports and increased oversight of book bans within state prisons. However, despite these efforts, the idea of direct financial compensation to descendants of enslaved people remains unpopular.

California's 1849 constitution said that slavery would not “be tolerated in this State,” yet it did not explicitly outlaw slavery or protect Black people's freedom, leaving legal grey areas that allowed slavery to continue. In 1852, California passed a fugitive slave law, allowing the arrest of escaped slaves and their return to the South.

The state budget, approved in June, allocates up to $12 million for reparations-related legislation. Governor Newsom has also signed laws aimed at improving educational outcomes for students of colour in K-12 career education programmes.

In addition, a proposal to ban forced labour as punishment for crimes will be on the ballot in November, with support from the Black Caucus.

State Assembly Member Isaac Bryan, who introduced a bill to increase oversight of banned books in state prisons, called the new law “a first step” in bringing transparency to the Department of Corrections' process for banning books.

Bryan said, “We need transparency in this process. We need to know what books are banned, and we need a mechanism for removing books off that list,” as reported by The Guardian.

California has become the latest American state to restrict smart phone usage at school. The move comes amid a growing consensus that smartphone usage can increase risk of mental illness and impair learning. Watch to know more.

California Latest US State To Restrict Smartphone Use In School

The US’ California has become the latest to join the league of 13 states to ban or restrict the use of smartphones in schools or are in the process of doing so. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law on Monday (Sep 23) regarding the same.

The decision came amid a growing consensus that excess usage of smartphones can lead to an increase in mental illness and impaired learning.

A wave of similar bans or restrictions was seen in the US when 13 states either recommended local educators to ban cell phones in schools or actually did it. The trend was spearheaded by Florida, which banned phones in classrooms in 2023, according to Education Week.

California’s bill on banning or restriction of cellphones was passed 76-0 in the state assembly and 38-1 in the senate. It will now require school boards or other concerned governing bodies to develop a policy to limit or prohibit the use of smartphones on campus by 1 July 2026, and also update the policy every five years.

"We know that excessive smartphone use increases anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues - but we have the power to intervene. This new law will help students focus on academics, social development, and the world in front of them, not their screens when they're in school," Newsom said in a statement.

With nearly 5.9 million public schools, California had followed the lead of its own Los Angeles County, whose school board banned smartphones for its 429,000 students in June. In the same month, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for a warning label on social media platforms similar to those on cigarette packages.

Murthy equates the problem to a mental health emergency. He cited a study in the medical journal JAMA showing adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media may be at heightened risk of mental illness while referring to a Gallup poll showing the average teen spends 4.8 hours per day on social media.

The Apple event 2024: Apple’s most awaited launch of new upgrades is over. The launch is going to take place at headquarters in Cupertino, California, US, almost like its annual September launches similar to the past.

Apple is expected to reveal its latest core production at the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event.

The title ‘It’s Glowtime’ has sparked curiosity among tech enthusiasts, causing an air of suspicion worldwide. However, this year, understanding the reason for the title is considered to be simpler than the previous year. The colours swirling around the Apple logo in the event poster resemble those used in Siri’s interface, which can hint at an upgrade to the Siri feature.

The most significant part of the event is likely to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The company is also expected to launch a series of Apple Watches and AirPods.

It will be interesting to see for the tech geeks how the new generative AI features that Apple will add to its devices, will create a wave of AI-infused hardware.

Viral, the first Apple advertisement for Indians

A video from the past has taken over the internet. A 1996 Apple Macintosh advertisement featuring Bollywood actor Samir Soni is now trending, grabbing the attention of tech geeks and people who like to romanticize past generations.

The advertisement portrayed a typical corporate structure. Soni, as an employee, was approached by his boss with a request to run a Windows disk on his PC. Soni confidently showed him the Apple Macintosh, smoothly inserting the disk and demonstrating its compatibility with Windows software.

The boss was impressed and forced to change his perception of Mac. The ad ended with the catchy phrase, “Does more, costs less, it’s that simple.”

The clip has gained over a million views, with people sharing their fond memories of the past.

One user wrote, “They abandoned the costs less part after Steve Jobs died.”

Another user said, "Looking at this ad makes me realise technology has really come a long way.”

Valley fever outbreak: An alarming rise in Valley fever cases has been reported in California, with at least 19 individuals affected after attending the Lightning in a Bottle music festival near Bakersfield in May, according to the California Department of Public Health. Here's what you need to know about this fungal infection and its symptoms.

What is Valley Fever?

Valley fever, or coccidioidomycosis, is a lung infection caused by inhaling spores from a fungus known as Coccidioides, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The disease gets its name from California’s San Joaquin Valley, where it was first discovered. Pets can also contract Valley fever, but the CDC confirms no transmission between animals and humans.

According to the CDC, people most at risk for severe illness include those with weakened immune systems, individuals with diabetes, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Symptoms

Valley fever often begins with symptoms that resemble the flu or COVID-19. Common signs include high fever, cold, body aches, cough, rashes, headaches, night sweats, fatigue, and muscle or joint pain. Experts say these symptoms usually appear one to three weeks after exposure to fungal spores.

While many individuals recover on their own, approximately 10% of cases may develop serious complications. People at higher risk, such as those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe symptoms.

No vaccine available

Currently, there is no vaccine to protect against Valley fever, though research is ongoing. The CDC advises using indoor air filtration systems and properly cleaning wounds with soap and water to minimise the risk of infection.
CDPH suggests that patients should consider getting tested if their symptoms do not improve, as Valley fever symptoms can resemble those of other infections.

Treatment options for severe cases

For individuals with mild or no symptoms, the infection often resolves on its own without the need for medication. However, those who develop more severe illness or belong to high-risk groups may be prescribed an oral antifungal medication like fluconazole for three to six months.

Also read | STOP with the alien talk, it is a danger to the society, British academic says According to the CDC, people most at risk for severe illness include those with weakened immune systems, individuals with diabetes, pregnant women, and the elderly. Symptoms Valley fever often begins with symptoms that resemble the flu or COVID-19. Common signs include high fever, cold, body aches, cough, rashes, headaches, night sweats, fatigue, and muscle or joint pain. Experts say these symptoms usually appear one to three weeks after exposure to fungal spores. People at higher risk, such as those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe symptoms. No vaccine available Currently, there is no vaccine to protect against Valley fever, though research is ongoing. The CDC advises using indoor air filtration systems and properly cleaning wounds with soap and water to minimise the risk of infection. CDPH suggests that patients should consider getting tested if their symptoms do not improve, as Valley fever symptoms can resemble those of other infections. Treatment options for severe cases For individuals with mild or no symptoms, the infection often resolves on its own without the need for medication. However, those who develop more severe illness or belong to high-risk groups may be prescribed an oral antifungal medication like fluconazole for three to six months. (With inputs from agencies)

California is seeing the re-emergence of gray wolves a century after the last of them was shot dead. The native species completely vanished from the state after the last gray wolf was killed in 1924. However, their population has once again started to grow.

According to the state's gray wolf officials, at least 30 new wolf pups were born across California’s wolf packs this spring. Axel Hunnicutt, the state gray wolf coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, says that this was the biggest jump recorded in the number of California wolves in a century.

Gray wolves have been a controversial topic in California and have seen a huge surge in number in the past years. Hunnicutt told SF Gate that 70 pups were born in the last seven years in the state.

Gray wolves made a return to California after wolf OR-7 came from Oregon to Siskiyou County in 2011. After just four years, the first pack of wolves in recent times came into existence in the state.

However, it is only now that the wolves are making their presence felt with their howling. The gray wolf population more than doubled between 2022 and 2023. From just 18 wolves the number went to over 40 last year. The number of packs has also risen from three to seven, according to Hunnicutt.

Some of them have now moved from the northeast to the far south, including the southern Sierra Nevada.

How did the wolves return?

Experts say that this is largely because of the federal protection provided to the wolves under the California Endangered Species Act. It makes it illegal for them to be hunted down unless they are about to harm a human. “Having [the gray wolf] come back is amazing,” Amaroq Weiss, a wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity, told SF Gate.

However, there are others who are facing negative consequences of their return. The wolves have killed several calves, and Janna Gliatto, a manager at Table Rock Ranch, told the publication that they feel helpless. “Our hands are tied. We’ve been invaded," she said.

In a very rare move, a startup in California wishes to increase the power production of the world by selling sunlight after it has gone dark, with the help of solar panels.

The company Reflect Orbital is aimed at reflecting the rays of the Sun over solar panels on the surface of the Earth after it has gone dark.

In video footage, the company has tried to show how the technology can illuminate the night sky using reflected light.

The ambitious plan of the company was presented by CEO Ben Nowack during the International Conference on Energy from Space in London this April.

Nowack took about shooting 57 small satellites with 33-square-foot ultra-reflective mylar mirrors which will eventually bounce back the sunlight down to solar farms.

When the demand is at its peak, the satellites, which orbit 370 miles above the surface, can provide an additional 30 minutes of sunshine to the stationed solar power plants, reported The Deep Dive.

Winter seems to have come to California a bit too early. An unusual dusting of snow was witnessed in the usually sunny west American state in the middle of summer, a first in 20 years.

This is the first snowflakes of the year for the state's mountains. The High Sierra in Yoesmite saw its earliest snowfall in over 20 years over the weekend. Snow dusted other peaks like Mount Shasta too.

Yosemite has not seen August snow for at least 20 years, as per the National Weather Service, which described the situation as “anomalous cool conditions” in much of the western US.

A rare, giant "doomsday fish" recently washed up at a California beach, and two days later an earthquake struck the region. You might wonder what the appearance of the fish has to do with the quake. Apparently, these fishes are said to bring with them earthquakes and other disasters.

Japanese folklore calls them harbingers of disaster. They have also formed the basis of ancient tales of sea monsters, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.

The creature in question is an oarfish and has only been seen 20 times in the region since 1901, according to a statement released by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.

This particular marine animal was a 12-foot-long (3.7 metres) short-crested oarfish. They live thousands of feet deep in oceans and are hardly ever seen. They look like a silver ribbon and filter-feed on krill and crustaceans.

The oarfish was seen near San Diego on August 10, and on August 12, an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 hit Los Angeles.

"There's this thought that they're a doomsday fish or a bad omen and that they seem to signal things like tsunamis or earthquakes," Zachary Heiple, a doctoral student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, told Live Science.

Heiple was a part of the team that recovered the oarfish.

Is the fish really the reason for earthquake?

He added that the sighting of the fish had nothing to do with the quake. He cited a 2019 study published in the journal Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America that rubbished the belief as mere superstition.

It was found in a shallow reef by a group of marine scientists. Emily Miller, a research associate at California Sea Grant, told LiveScience that "the highly reflective surface of the oarfish was still brilliantly obvious underwater."

The Scripps statement said that the oarfish had been taken to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facility. Samples from the fish will be used to learn more about the animal. The reason for the oarfish dying is not known yet, but it was in good condition, the statement added.

However, the world's biggest coffee shop chain said that they would also set up a small remote office in Newport Beach for Niccol to use when working from California.

Dan Coatsworth, an investment analyst at AJ Bell, told BBC that using a private jet was not just bad for the environment, but it would also send a bad message to customers and staff and was "ultimately not a practical way to run a $105 billion business with an estimated 400,000 employees".

"A leader needs to be at the heart of a business, not sitting on the beach enjoying the perks of the job," he said.

"The fact Brian Niccol was drafted in to give a new lease of life to Starbucks implies he has a big challenge ahead. This isn’t taking the reins of a business firing on all cylinders; it’s a repair job which means being in the engine room at all times."

Starbucks will provide company aircraft for "business-related travel" and for "travel" between Newport Beach and Seattle. This isn’t taking the reins of a business firing on all cylinders; it’s a repair job which means being in the engine room at all times." A Hollister family warns parents to be careful after a restaurant in California mistakenly served wine to their two-year-old child, landing her in the emergency room due to dangerously high blood alcohol levels.

The family visited Fujiyama, a Japanese restaurant in Salinas, California for a large dinner party. The parents had ordered apple juice for their daughter. They discovered she had been served alcohol when she became wobbly.

The drink was served in a normal juice cup with a lid. The parents noticed the toddler started showing signs of intoxication after drinking it and became alarmed. Upon smelling the drink, they realised it was wine that their daughter had been drinking.

“She was swaying, she was falling over, she was leaning on walls, she couldn’t hold her head up, she was slurring her words,” Noemi Valencia, the mother, told KSBW 8.

The child was rushed to the emergency room, where they spent the night. The blood test showed their daughter had a 0.12% alcohol level in her system.

The manager of the restaurant revealed their mistake to KSBW 8. The wine had been labelled wrongly as 'apple juice'. The server served the wine to the child, thinking it was the right drink.

“Take proper precautions and how you store things or label things properly so that this doesn’t happen to anybody else,” Valencia said, hoping the restaurant learns from their mistake.

According to KSBW 8, a police report was filed against the restaurant on August 17 and Salinas police are looking into the incident.

In a statement, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said, “The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is aware of the reports and is working with local authorities to investigate.”

Thankfully for the parents, their little girl has fully recovered and sobered up. They are glad that the situation was not worse.

“Parents: taste what’s served to your kids,” they said, urging other parents to remain cautious of what is served to their children.

Toddler lands in ER after being served wine instead of apple juice at California restaurant

California Governor Gavin Newsom Thursday floated a plan requiring oil refiners to maintain minimum reserves of gasoline to prevent price spikes.

The California Energy Commission said that, on 63 days last year, California refiners maintained less than 15 days of gasoline supply—a situation in which the agency contends that spiked prices cost drivers $650 million.

“Price spikes at the pump are profit spikes for Big Oil. Refiners should be required to plan ahead and backfill supplies to keep prices stable, instead of playing games to earn even more profits," Newsom, a Democrat, said in a release.

It was not clear when the plan could take effect and Newsom's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The plan, which the industry has blasted as an attack on producers, would require California's oil refiners to demonstrate resupply plans sufficient to make up for expected losses in production when their plants are undergoing maintenance work.

The state of California determined that 2023 gasoline prices spiked largely due to refineries going offline without properly planning to backfill supplies.

It comes three months after the US Department of Energy sold its 1 million barrel Northeast gasoline reserve, which Washington created after Superstorm Sandy in 2014 left motorists scrambling for fuel supplies. The US Congress mandated the sale following criticism that the reserve was too expensive to maintain and did not boost energy security.

California, the most populous US state, is home to some of the country's highest average gasoline prices, and it has a loveless relationship with oil corporations. The state keenly aspires to adopt electric cars. It is also the sole state exempted by the federal environmental regulator from setting its own vehicle emissions regulations.

This month, US oil company Chevron said it was moving its headquarters to Houston from San Ramon, California.

In a statement, Catherine Reheis-Boyd, president and CEO of the Western States Petroleum Association, described Newsom's plan as "nothing more than a political attack on consumers and our industry."

"To impose new operational mandates on energy producers based on such falsehoods is regulatory malpractice, and ignores the logistical challenges and costs associated with such a plan," she said.

California targets fuel price surges with mandatory gas reserves

A federal appeals court on Friday (Aug 16) upheld a significant portion of an injunction blocking a California law designed to protect children from potentially harmful online content.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favour of NetChoice, an industry trade group representing online businesses. The trade group had that the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act infringed upon its members’ First Amendment rights to free speech.

The court found that NetChoice was likely to prove that the law violated these rights.

The contested law required businesses to prepare "Data Protection Impact Assessment" reports to evaluate whether their online platforms could cause harm to children. This could include content like videos promoting self-harm. The law also mandated that businesses take proactive measures to mitigate such risks before launching their platforms. Additionally, the law required companies to estimate the ages of child users, configure privacy settings accordingly, or default to high privacy settings for all users.

Violations of the law could result in steep civil penalties, ranging from $2,500 per child for negligent violations to $7,500 per child for intentional violations.

NetChoice, whose members include major tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta Platforms (Facebook’s parent company), and Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter), argued that the law would effectively turn these companies into "roving censors" of content that California might deem harmful.

Circuit Judge Milan Smith, writing for a three-judge panel, stated that the requirement for businesses to create and disclose opinions about content-related harms to children was likely unconstitutional.

“The forced creation and disclosure of highly subjective opinions about content-related harms to children is unnecessary for fostering a proactive environment in which companies, the state, and the general public work to protect children’s safety online,” Smith wrote.

While the appeals court upheld this part of the injunction, it set aside the remainder of the preliminary injunction issued last September by US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman.

US court blocks key part of California law on children's online safety

Sea lions, rare marine mammals are stranding themselves on the California coast. Experts believe this is hinting towards the possibility of widespread poisoning by a harmful algae bloom that occurred this summer.

The incident of stranded sea lions has been happening since July 26, as the marine mammals were found lying along the shoreline in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, as per The Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute.

The institute in a statement said that marine mammals are suffering from domoic acid, a neurotoxin that affects the brain. The poisoning event is largely affecting adult female California sea lions, it added.

The team has rescued 23 such animals so far. Coastal Vandenberg Space Force Base released photos of sea lions being rescued from one of its beaches.

“Rising ocean temperatures and excess nutrients are fueling these blooms, producing toxins that enter the food chain through small fish,” Coastal Vanderberg Space Force said in an Instagram caption that accompanied photos of a stranded seal being treated by wildlife officials.

“Local efforts, including monitoring and rescue initiatives, are in place to mitigate the impact.”

Outbreaks of domoic acid poisoning are common along the California coast and have caused several mass sickening incidents in recent years.

The neurotoxin is produced by a microscopic alga that proceeds through the food chain by accumulating in smaller marine animals, such as crustaceans, fish and squid, and then gets transferred to larger animals such as sea lions, dolphins and birds.

Experts say people can also get sickened by this acid.

The symptoms for affected animals can include disorientation, head weaving, foaming at the mouth and seizures.

Last year, hundreds of sea lions and dolphins died in the first weeks of June- it was termed a severe outbreak. At the time, marine mammal rescue workers reported receiving hundreds of calls a day about sickened animals.

While such events are naturally occurring, scientists have said that domoic acid outbreaks seem to increase in their severity, and are exploring its links to warming ocean temperatures.

“I’ve been studying domoic acid for 30 years and I have a feeling it’s getting worse based on the records we continue to break,” the executive director of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System, Clarissa Anderson, told the Guardian in an interview last year.
