The man, whose identity was not known, was part of a group of about a dozen ocean swimmers who regularly meet to train in Del Mar.

The attack prompted lifeguards to close a stretch of the beach for swimmers and surfers one mile (1.61 kilometres) north and south of the lifeguard headquarters. The closure will reportedly remain in effect till 9:00 am (local time) on Tuesday (Jun 4).

About the victim

The shark attacked the 46-year-old victim and bit an arm, a hand and his torso, said the town of Del Mar, in a statement. The man who has not been named was said to be an experienced ocean swimmer.

The incident also took place under relatively normal conditions for early June with three-foot waves and a water temperature of about 17.8 degrees Celsius, reported NBC News citing data from the National Data Buoy Center information.

Prince King, an 81-year-old California man who was accused of being a "serial slingshot shooter" targeting his neighbours for nearly a decade, has died just days after his arrest.

According to a report by the Los Angeles County medical examiner, King died of heart disease on Wednesday (May 29) at a private residence.

Slingshot shooter's arrest

Authorities had arrested King last week after concluding a "lengthy investigation" into a series of incidents involving ball bearings being fired at cars and homes in the city of Azusa for years.

King was released on Tuesday after his arraignment, with the judge ordering him to stay 200 yards (183 metres) away from his Azusa home.

At the time of his release, he was also instructed not to contact his alleged victims and was prohibited from possessing any deadly weapons, including slingshots. He was due back in court on June 17.

On Wednesday morning, police responded to a call about a possible dead person and found King at the residence.

King's arrest came after police executed a search warrant at his home, discovering ball bearings and a slingshot.

They managed to arrest him when a recent increase in complaints revealed a discernible "pattern", leading them to "narrow it down to a specific residence". The only motive they could determine was "malicious mischief".

Police noted that "dozens of citizens were being victimised by a serial slingshot shooter".

Police in Southern California have apprehended an octogenarian man, Prince King, described as a "serial slingshot shooter" suspected of terrorising his neighbourhood for nearly ten years.

He was finally held when Azusa police were called to the 900 block of North Enid Avenue regarding a "quality of life issue."

Over the past nine to ten years, many residents reported incidents involving a slingshot that took place in the neighbourhood.

Reports suggested that he resorted to smashing windows and damaging windshields of residents. Not only that, he sometimes came very close to hitting pedestrians in Azusa.

Lieutenant Jake Bushey of the Azusa police stated that initial slingshot incidents had been under investigation for years, but identifying a suspect proved challenging.

Elderly slingshot shooter nabbed after a decade of terrorising California neighbourhood

California's top-court on Tuesday deliberated whether voters had the authority to classify app-based drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft as independent contractors under Proposition 22 (Prop 22).

The 2020 ballot measure, passed by nearly 60 per cent of California voters, exempts these drivers from a 2019 state law that mandates stricter employee classifications, entitling workers to greater benefits.

The court heard arguments from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and four drivers who contend that Prop 22 is unconstitutional.

Prop 22 permits app-based transportation services to consider drivers as independent contractors, provided they earn at least 120 per cent of the minimum wage while on a ride and receive expense reimbursements and health insurance subsidies.

This remains a critical issue for the ride-service industry as the classification has a major impact on costs.

Employees, unlike contractors, are entitled to benefits such as minimum wage, overtime pay, and expense reimbursements, potentially increasing costs by up to 30 per cent according to studies.

Uber, Lyft, and other companies spent over $200 million campaigning for Prop 22, arguing that without it, the increased expenses could drive them out of California.

The lawsuit's core question is whether Prop 22 improperly limits the legislature’s authority to regulate workers' compensation, a power that SEIU argues should be exclusive.

However, a lower appeals court had previously rejected this argument, indicating that Prop 22 does not improperly constrain legislative power.

During Tuesday's session, justices examined whether the California constitution grants exclusive regulatory power to the legislature or requires it to share this power with voters.

Justice Goodwin Liu noted that Prop 22’s provisions apply specifically to labour code classifications, suggesting the legislature could still pass laws to extend benefits to app-based drivers if it chose to do so.

Scott Kronland, representing SEIU, argued that a clause in Prop 22 restricting amendments makes it difficult for lawmakers to counteract the measure.

Meanwhile, some justices expressed concern that allowing voters such control could undermine the legislature's absolute power, potentially leading to the elimination of the workers' compensation system, a situation described by Justice Joshua Groban as turning "plenary" power into something less absolute.

A couple in the US state of Utah was reunited with its pet cat, Galena after she was accidentally shipped all the way to California inside an Amazon return package. The cat, which luckily survived the days-long ordeal, was missing for around a week before being discovered by an Amazon warehouse worker.

How did this happen?

Galena, an indoor-only cat, travelled all the way from Lehi, Utah, across the United States to Riverside, California which is more than 1,046 kilometres after she snuck into a box. The pet cat was reported missing by her owner Carrie Clark.

It is also worth noting that the cat survived six days of travel with no food or water but was thankfully found by an Amazon worker named Brandy Hunter.

Hunter took Galena to a vet where she was scanned for a microchip which alerted Clark of her cat’s whereabouts.

The couple from Utah had reported Galena missing on April 10. But as it turns out their pet cat had jumped into one of the packages undetected. “That was the worst part, we just had no idea what happened,” she told NBC affiliate KSL News.

She added, “She just mysteriously disappeared. We had absolutely no idea what happened to her.”

In a post on Facebook, Clark described her cat as a “super shy indoor cat,” saying that she is a “part of our family and has never been gone this long before.”

Over the days, Clark was slowly losing hope of finding her beloved companion, but around a week later she and her husband Matt received a shocking alert from the cat’s microchip which said that she had been found somewhere near Los Angeles.

‘Most amazing, insane news’

After Galena’s microchip was scanned, Clark’s contact information appeared and the vet called her and explained how the cat ended up in California. It was “the most amazing, insane news in the entire world,” she told KSL News.

A pilot and his dog experienced an extraordinary survival story when they swam to shore together after their plane crashed. According to the Los Angeles Times, the man, whose identity remains unknown, was piloting a single-engine Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six plane when it went down into the waters off Rancho Palos Verdes in California around 5:20 pm.

While the precise reasons that led the crash are still unclear, reports suggest that the pilot was forced to perform an emergency water landing due to engine failure.

Despite the dire circumstances, both the pilot and the dog managed to survive the initial impact and swim approximately 150 to 200 yards to shore, near the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles.

Upon receiving a 911 call from a bystander reporting the crash, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department dispatched a helicopter to provide assistance. Once the pilot and his canine companion safely reached the shore, they were greeted by deputies from the Lomita Station.

A man in California, United States is suing women and has filed more than 50 cases against them after they reportedly called him a bad date on a viral Facebook page called “Are We Dating The Same Guy.”

What we know about the case

Stewart Lucas Murrey from the city of Santa Monica said that he has filed the lawsuit seeking damages amounting to $2.6 million for defamation and sex-based discrimination as well as “emotional distress and pain and suffering”.

The Facebook group Are We Dating The Same Guy? Los Angeles is a private group on Facebook and has nearly 54,000 members.

On his GoFundMe page, Murrey has claimed that at least 238 Facebook accounts were involved in “harming” him for over a year.

“Some of their acts included posting my pictures without my permission, tracking my whereabouts, conspiring to harass me, fabricating entire stories, and sensationalizing their unremarkable interactions with me,” he wrote.

Murrey also claimed that he had never met some of these women and “ever really saw” their faces on TV as they were talking about him in a press release.

“I support a safe space for women to protect themselves against being stalked, harassed or harmed, and not the other way around. These women exploited the concept of a safe space to gossip, defame and cyberbully anyone at whim,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the women sued said Murrey was using legal action to intimidate them. One of the women, Kelly Gibbons, said that the first time she met him in real life was when he came to her house to drop off the lawsuit.

“My heart started pounding, as I thought, this man knows where I live,” Gibbons told the Times of London. She added, “It was pretty eerie. He was filming with his cellphone, walking in. I don’t know who wouldn’t get creeped out by that.”

Last month, some of the women who were sued by Murrey held a press conference and said they were “just speaking their truth and, unfortunately for him, it was not favourable.”

The women, who have also created a GoFundMe page, said that they are coming together to “share truthful accounts of our personal experiences” as well as “valid concerns pertaining to the plaintiff’s unsettling behaviour and background, all of which is public information.”

On their page, they also said that Murrey “poses a legitimate danger to the women of Los Angeles.”

In the United States, California has proposed a new bill that abrogates the 'right to disconnect' from work. If passed it could mean that employees can ignore work communication after work hours except communications related to emergencies and work scheduled.

US: California proposes bill for 'right to disconnect' after work hours

Spring has sprung, but we may not see the picture-perfect super blooms Californians have become accustomed to. This year, the warmer weather has tulips blossoming at the right pace, but they likely will not see a super bloom because the wet weather did not germinate the seeds in the garden all at once.

Will California blossom this spring?

A spectacle of golden streaks adorned the skies of southern California in the wee hours of Tuesday (Apr 2). The incident triggered astonishment among startled onlookers.

It also led to speculation and queries of all sorts so much so that some people ended up believing that it was comet sighting or remains of the recent Falcon 9 rocket launch from Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Whether it was comet sighting or meteor shower that residents of Derbyshire witnessed in the morning hours remained unclear. However, as per reports citing analysts, the luminous display was attributed to a re-entry event of a Chinese rocket which fragmented upon its return to Earth's atmosphere.

Notably, whenever a rocket re-enters Earth's atmosphere, it goes through extreme conditions due to heating and the pressure changes it experience. It can lead to fragmentation or breakup of the rocket if it's not properly designed to withstand these stresses.

Amid the flurry of confusion and excitement, eyewitnesses swiftly turned to social media. They flooded the social media platforms with videos and different theories for the sighting.

If reports are to be believed, even the local radio stations started buzzing with people reporting the incident in their neighbourhood.

Aerospace Corporation, a nonprofit organisation that operates a federally funded research and development centre (FFRDC) dedicated to the space industry and plays a vital role in supporting the US' space programmes, released a statement regarding the incident.

Southern California skies light up with golden meteor showers or comet? Here's what analysts say

Early Tuesday morning (April 2), skywatchers across Southern California were astonished to capture streaks of sparkling light on camera.

The fiery illumination, potentially resulting from falling debris, emerged around 1:45 am, with sightings reported across a broad expanse including Los Angeles and surrounding areas. However, social media was filled with speculation about whether it was an asteroid entering the Earth's atmosphere.

"The light from the front was bright blue," said Jarred Gonzalez, who captured the light on video in the Pico Union area, as reported by NBC News. "It was visible to us for a good 30 seconds, then disappeared from our line of sight."

Video shows California officers fatally shooting abducted teenager as she surrenders

In a rare and tragic incident, a mountain lion attack has claimed the life of a man in California, marking the state's first fatal incident in around two decades.

The attack occurred as two brothers, aged 18 and 21, were hunting in the Georgetown area. The younger brother made a frantic call to the authorities at approximately 1:13 pm last Saturday, reporting the attack on himself and his brother.

According to reports, the 21-year-old brother became separated from his sibling during the attack, prompting a search by authorities. They located him about half an hour after the initial 911 call.

According to the sheriff's news release, the caller suffered "traumatic injuries" to his face during the attack.

"The mountain lion was between the deputies and the subject on the ground," the sheriff's office said in the release on Facebook talking about the moment they located the older brother.

Deputies on the scene discharged their firearms to scare off the mountain lion so they could provide medical assistance. However, upon reaching the victim, they tragically discovered that the 21-year-old had succumbed to his injuries.

The incident has sparked concerns about mountain lion encounters in the area. The state agency responsible for wildlife management notes that while attacks on humans are rare, this case underscores the need for vigilance when in mountain lion territory.

Authorities in California have stressed the uncommon nature of mountain lion attacks on humans. According to state fish and wildlife officials, the most recent fatal mountain lion attack in California occurred in January 2004, when a 35-year-old cyclist was killed on a trail in Orange County.

In El Dorado County, where the recent attack occurred, the last fatal mountain lion attack was in April 1994, when a 40-year-old woman was killed in the Auburn State Recreation Area.

San Bernardino Country sheriff's office on Thursday (Mar 14) released the footage of 15-year-old Ryan Gainer fatally shot by the police while he was holding a garden tool outside his house in California. Gainer, an autistic African American boy, was killed last Saturday in Apple Valley.

He was shot by at least one of two San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies dispatched to his home after relatives called 911 seeking help for what civil rights attorney DeWitt Lacy, representing the family, described as a mental health crisis.

Speaking to Reuters, DeWitt Lacy said the tragedy unfolded when Gainer's parents did not allow him to play video games or listen to music until he finished household chores. This angered the 15-year-old.

Gainer's father calmed him down, but the teen grew agitated again when the police arrived and rushed toward them carrying a garden tool. Gainer raised the "bladed end of the tool and ran toward" one deputy who retreated with the boy chasing him in an attempt to "assault" the officer.

In a statement, the sheriff's department said, "The deputy retreated and Gainer chased the deputy in an attempt to assault him with the bladed end of the tool. A lethal force encounter occurred, and Gainer was struck by gunfire. "

"Deputies quickly rendered medical aid to Gainer and continued until paramedics arrived. Gainer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries," the statement added.

Lacy, while speaking to Reuters said, a medical professional who had examined Gainer told the family he had asphyxiated on vomit in his throat - an indication, the lawyer said, that prompt medical aid could have saved the boy's life.

The lawyer noted that the sheriff's department had not yet released full, unedited bodycam footage to the family, nor any audio from radio communications between the dispatcher and the deputies.

Lacy further told the news agency that the police knew about Gainer and his special needs, as officers were called to the house earlier in response to outbursts reported by the family.

Paul Edmonds, a man from the US state of California has been free of both cancer and HIV since one particular treatment five years ago known as a stem cell transplant. In 2021, he also became one of five people in the world who had been cured of HIV.

About Edmonds’ journey

Sharing his story with the National Cancer Institute, City of Hope, Edmonds said that he had been living with HIV-1 for 31 years before the transplant. “People were dying within a few years of finding out they were positive,” said Edmonds recalling reading the obituaries of many friends back in the early 1980s.

“A dark cloud was over the city,” he said, describing the city of San Francisco. At the time, people didn’t know what his friends were dying from but many called it AIDS. However, it was not until 1984 that HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS.

Edmonds was diagnosed in 1988 with not just HIV, but full-blown AIDS. He told the City of Hope, that he felt he had been given a death sentence. In 1997, he began HIV antiretroviral therapy which effectively suppressed the virus to undetectable levels, but it is not a cure.

In 2018, Edmonds was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, which eventually developed into acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Since people with HIV have weaker immune systems, they are likely to develop leukaemia and other blood cancers.

About the treatment

Edmonds has been free of both cancer and HIV since one particular treatment and is now considered in remission from AML and in another two years, he will be considered “cured” of HIV, since it would mark five years from his last treatment.

He is not only the fifth person in the world in remission of HIV, but also the eldest and had HIV the longest. Edmonds, 67, and his husband, Arnie House, were both HIV-positive when they were first diagnosed over three decades ago.

“I wasn’t ready to die,” he told ABC News, speaking about his miraculous treatment at City of Hope. The medical team behind his case published his stunning recovery in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The treatment behind the remission is known as a stem cell transplant and is typically used in the final part of treatment for blood cancers, including leukaemia.

As a part of the treatment, blood-forming stem cells in a patient’s bone marrow are destroyed using radiation or chemotherapy and the patient is then injected with healthy blood-forming stem cells.

The stem cells are taken from a donor who has similar – but not the same – genes and are transplanted into the patient. These cells then produce cancer-free blood. However, in Edmonds’ case, the donated stem cells had a genetic mutation associated with resistance to HIV-1, said the doctors.

“It’s a very rare mutation. It exists in roughly 1% of the population,” said Dr Jana Dickter, Edmond’s physician at City of Hope, as quoted by the New York Post. “It’s not something we find very commonly.”

The transplant replaced Edmonds’ bone marrow and blood stem cells with the donors’ and since then he has shown no signs of either AML or HIV.
