The night sky from California to Texas was lit up a little extraordinarily last week when a mysterious and slow-moving fireball traversed through it, leaving people puzzled about its identity.

In the camera footage, which has been obtained by NBC 7, the lit ball of fire was spotted slowly moving across the sky and leaving behind a trail through its bring trail outside of San Diego over the home of Rebecca Woods who lives in San Marco

“Our camera is facing south and the object flew from west to east,” said Woods, while speaking to NBC 7.

California's Park Fire has become the state's biggest wildfire in history in less than a week since igniting, prompting widespread evacuations. Watch in for more details!

California park fire now the biggest in the entire US

Thousands of firefighters battling a massive northern California wildfire were working in milder temperatures and higher humidity Monday, but the blaze that has destroyed more than 100 structures since it began five days ago continues to grow.

The Park Fire, which officials said was started by a man who pushed a flaming car into a gully, grew slightly overnight to 368,000 acres (148,924 hectares). The sixth largest wildfire in state history is rolling through a remote area some 180 miles (290 km) northeast of San Francisco, according to Cal Fire.

Crews were "still in for quite a firefight today, just because (of) the sheer magnitude and the sheer size of the fire," said Dan Collins, a Cal Fire captain, noting that temperatures were to be in the high 80s with 25% per cent humidity during the day.

Some 4,800 firefighters were building and strengthening control lines on Monday morning hoping to increase the 12% they had contained. The more favourable weather conditions compared to those they faced over the past several days were helping, Collins added.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said in a statement that the accused arson suspect, Ronnie Dean Stout II, was jailed without bond on a Butte County judge's warrant after he was identified as the person seen pushing a flaming car into a gully on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire rapidly grew, doubling in size from Friday to Sunday and destroying at least 114 structures in four counties.

The fire has also caused officials to issue evacuation warnings and orders to several communities, including Paradise, the town that was devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest in the state's history.

Cal Fire also reported on Monday that 33% of the SQF Lightning Complex was contained. That fire has raged for the past two weeks some 350 miles (563 km) to the south of the Park Fire. Part of that complex, dubbed the Borel Fire, swept through Havilah, torching much of that historic gold mining town on Friday.

The Park and Borel fires were just two of the 102 large active fires burning nationwide. A total of 25 had forced evacuations as of Monday morning, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

A cold front in the Pacific Northwest, where many of the fires burn, was forecast to bring rain and thunderstorms to the region on Monday. However, the system will carry strong wind gusts of up to 50 miles (80 km) per hour that could hamper firefighting efforts, the center said in a statement.

California Wildfire: Firefighters battle the wind-driven blaze with aerial support

Thousands of firefighters are battling a rapidly growing wildfire in northern California. Within 24 hours, the blaze more than doubled in size. The park fire has burned more than 350,000 acres north of Sacramento. The fire has destroyed 134 structures, and it is still merely 12% contained.

Northern California blaze burns over 350,000 acres, becomes largest in US

A fire raging out of control in northern California has rapidly become among the biggest ever in the western US state, authorities said Saturday.

The so-called Park Fire burned more than 350,000 acres (142,000 hectares) as of Saturday evening, making it the seventh-largest ever recorded in California history, the state agency Cal Fire said.

The fire, which prompted orders for more than 4,000 people to flee their homes, was burning through a largely rural, mountainous area near the city of Chico, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of state capital Sacramento.

"Extreme fire conditions continue to challenge firefighters," Cal Fire said in a post on X.

The fire was just 10 percent controlled, despite the efforts of more than 3,700 personnel with over a dozen helicopters and several planes, according to an agency update.

"Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the State are flying fire suppression missions as conditions allow," it said.

"Lower temperatures and higher humidity have reduced fire activity," the agency said, while adding that fire was still spreading.

The Park Fire started Wednesday near Chico, in Butte County, and within hours had devastated a wide area there and in neighboring Tehama County.

Cal Fire's latest update said 20 structures were confirmed destroyed by the fire, lowering an earlier estimate of 134.

The agency said the numbers were expected to fluctuate as officials assess the damage on the ground.

The blaze has generated an enormous column of dense gray smoke which has also been blown over nearby states.

On Thursday, police detained a 42-year-old man on suspicion of having started the fire by pushing a burning car into a ravine.

Chico is only about 15 miles from Paradise, a city devastated by a 2018 fire that ranked as California's most deadly ever, claiming 85 lives.

The explosive growth of the Park Fire has again placed Paradise under evacuation warning, unleashing painful memories for its residents.

California fire rages on to become one of state's biggest ever

The largest wildfire engulfed Northern California in the United States a wildfire that started on Wednesday sweeping through 500 Acres every hour forcing a massive evacuation and destroying infrastructure.

California Park Wildfire: 34,800 acres devoured in Park fire

The Park Fire in no time swelled into a massive wildfire in California and eventually became the state's largest blaze of this season as it burned down structures and more than 120,000 acres of land and led to the evacuation of thousands of people.

The authorities on Thursday (July 25) said that the wildland fire was allegedly started by a man who had pushed a torched car into a 60-foot embankment.

In an investigation, it was found that the vehicle was on fire when it was pushed near the Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park before 3 pm (local time) on Wednesday (July 24).

Some witnesses had reported seeing the suspect leaving the area calmly after throwing away the car while other people ran seeing the rapidly spreading fire.

The investigators quickly responded to the fire and secured the area as they started to search for clues about the unknown man who dumped the car which was on fire.

In the investigation, the officials found the identity of the man after which a warrant was issued by a local judge and he was finally arrested.

The suspect identified as 48-year-old Ronnie Dean Stout II was arrested and put behind prison without bail, as stated by Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

"The car went down an embankment approximately 60 feet and burned completely, spreading flames that caused the Park Fire," said Ramsey, in a statement.

As the skies of the West Coast remained filled with black smoke rising from the blaze, the Park Fire in Butte County and the Durkee Fire in Oregon, became the largest wildfire in the nation.

The Park Fire alone became the state's largest wildfire in 2024 as it burned more than 124,000 acres and also destroyed many structures.

The Butte County Sheriff's Department had to order evacuations in the area's rural foothill communities because of the wildfire.

More than 1,100 firefighters tried to douse the flames by cutting fire lines with bulldozers and using helicopters as they tried to stop the fire from reaching the homes of people living in the populated areas of north Chico, said the authorities.

"The fire is well established. Fire personnel are currently focusing on evacuations and structure defence while concurrently building direct containment lines utilizing bulldozers, fire crews and fire engines," said Cal Fire, in an updated statement.

"More resources have been ordered and are inbound from various areas throughout Northern California," it added.

Elon Musk on Tuesday said he will move the headquarters of SpaceX and X to Texas after a California law blocked schools from forcing teachers to notify parents about changes to a student's gender identity. "This is the final straw," Musk said on X.

"Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas," he added.

The multi-billionaire also said that he is transferring X from its art-deco headquarters in San Francisco to Austin, a threat he has made before but never saw to completion.
Musk has already moved Tesla's headquarters from Palo Alto in Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas.

"I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children," Musk wrote. Musk has expressed deep disdain about the use of preferred pronouns, often mocking the practice on social media and dismissing it as part of a "woke" agenda that was dangerous for society.

Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday signed the bill after a contentious legislative process that pitted a handful of school boards fighting for parental rights against LGBTQ activists concerned about the welfare of vulnerable students.

The law reversed decisions in conservative school districts that ordered teachers to notify parents if a student changed their name or pronouns or requested to use facilities or participate in programs that didn't match their official gender.

Also Read: Musk planning to turn Trump into Iron Man? Musk has expressed deep disdain about the use of preferred pronouns, often mocking the practice on social media and dismissing it as part of a "woke" agenda that was dangerous for society. Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday signed the bill after a contentious legislative process that pitted a handful of school boards fighting for parental rights against LGBTQ activists concerned about the welfare of vulnerable students. The law reversed decisions in conservative school districts that ordered teachers to notify parents if a student changed their name or pronouns or requested to use facilities or participate in programs that didn't match their official gender. Wildfire season in the US state of California has already burned through five times the average amount of land for this time of year. Mid-July is usually considered fairly early in the state's wildfire season but according to data wildfires have scorched nearly 220,000 acres already. In the last two weeks, the Golden State has endured a record heat wave with temperatures nearing 51 degrees Celsius in Palm Springs and 43 degrees Celsius or upward in the Central Valley, Southern California, and parts of the Bay Area. Meanwhile, the entertainment hub of Las Vegas recorded its fifth straight day of temperatures sizzling at 46.1 degrees Celsius or greater. The authorities have had to evacuate parts of Santa Barbara County in southern California as the Lake Fire engulfed more than 34,000 acres over the last few days. California Governor Gavin Newsom has already warned the public to be alert as the state heads into what could be a worse-than-expected fire season. “Hots are getting a lot hotter; we’re experiencing unprecedented record heat. These heat domes over the entire western United States, over and over and over and over and over again. Record-breaking temperatures, record-breaking experiences. Not just in California, across this country and around the rest of the world," said Newsom. Our winds and the recent heat wave have exacerbated the issue, consuming thousands of acres. So we need to be extra cautious," said Tyler. Notably, an unprecedented wet winter has coated the Californian landscape with grasses that have quickly dried as the weather turned warmer - creating the perfect and abundant fuel for the brush fires. The wildfires started in early June and might increase in intensity as thunderstorms return to the region later this week, according to the forecasters. The United States has been reeling under an intense heatwave for the last few weeks now, with about 36 million people or 10 per cent of the country's population, living under excessive heat, as per the National Weather Service (NWS). California wildfires scorch five time the average area with peak season yet to come

A scorching heat wave has gripped most parts of the United States recently. According to authorities, the extreme weather conditions have also resulted in at least 27 deaths over the last week.

The West and East Coast cities of California, Oregon, and Arizona are experiencing record-breaking temperatures, and the death toll is expected to further rise. National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heatwave alerts for three consecutive days as the temperatures in the region remain high.

Over 135 million people after affected across the lower 48 region of the US due to the heat wave. The conditions are expected to remain the same until the weekend.

The majority of the deaths are reported in California from the cities including San Jose, Fresno and Oakland, where the mercury hit record-high numbers. The Chief Medical Examiner Michelle Jordan of Santa Clara County has said that they are investigating 14 cases which are likely caused by the heat.

Eight of the people who died were over 65 years of age, and most of them were found at their residences. Two individuals who lost their lives due to the heat wave were homeless, and one of them was residing in transitional housing - the temporary housing provided for certain homeless individuals - said Jordan.

In California's Death Valley National Park, the temperature rose to 53.3 degrees Celsius (128 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday (Jul 6), resulting in the death of a motorcyclist.

On the same day, a woman detained at the Central California Women’s Facility died due to extreme heat conditions inside the prison, according to her daughter. However, the authorities are still doubtful.

In Sacramento, a 58-year-old man was taken to hospital after he suffered a heat stroke as his home was not air-conditioned, but he did not survive.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed California's budget on Saturday, which covers an estimated $46.8 billion deficit with a mix of $16 billion worth of spending cuts and temporary tax increases on some businesses. This comes just days after lawmakers approved the budget Wednesday after very intense negotiations between the state's governor and legislative leaders. The strain brought about requirements for concessions on both sides and shelved some progressive policies for a second year in a row.

“This is a responsible budget that prepares for the future while investing in foundational programs that benefit millions of Californians every day,” Newsom said in a statement. “Thanks to careful stewardship of the budget over the past few years, we’re able to meet this moment while protecting our progress on housing, homelessness, education, health care and other priorities that matter deeply to Californians.”

The deficit, projected to be roughly $32 billion in 2023, has ballooned this year, with expectations of continuing shortfalls in the future for the country's most populous state. This budget signing comes just two years after Newsom and Democratic lawmakers heralded record surpluses topping more than $100 billion. Those surpluses were supercharged off billions of dollars in federal COVID-19 aid and a progressive tax code that generated major revenue from the state's wealthiest residents.

The economic landscape has changed radically. Inflation has slowed the economy, increasing unemployment and bringing reversals to the technology sector, one of the major drivers of growth for California. In addition, the Newsom administration miscalculated the state's revenue following a seven-month delay in the tax filing deadline.

The budget of California has swung wildly over the years, given its reliance on its wealthiest taxpayers. This current deficit is an inopportune challenge for Newsom as he raises his national profile for a potential presidential run and seeks to be a chief surrogate for President Joe Biden's campaign.

The newly signed budget incorporates a provision in which it is agreed that Gov. Newsom and lawmakers will lobby to amend the state's constitution to reserve more money for savings to cushion future fiscal shortfalls. This call is, therefore, for a more stable financial base for the state moving into the future.

The Republicans have complained of being left out of the negotiations. They attacked a temporary increase in tax on businesses, affecting those with at least $1 million in revenue. That increase is scheduled to last three years and would produce more than an added $5 billion for the state next year. Republicans also criticised reductions in social safety net programs that they said would harm vulnerable populations.

The budget illustrates how tough it is going to be to strike a balance between addressing immediate financial problems and trying to cope with long-term fiscal health. As California navigates these economic uncertainties, the decisions made in this budget will have significant implications for the state's future.

California's budget tightrope: balancing cuts, taxes, and future stability amid economic shifts

Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, announced $5 billion joint venture with American electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian. The secretive collaboration hatched last year. It involved shipping camouflaged Audi vehicles to Rivian's California facility, where they underwent intensive testing.

A team of 30 Rivian engineers examined German car's electronics. They integrated them with Rivian's software and harnesses to assess compatibility.

This covert operation's goal, according to sources close to the deal was to determine if Volkswagen's future EVs could benefit from Rivian's advanced technology.

The success of these tests led to the joint venture announcement. "I think it's quite an accomplishment this all remained under wraps. Especially considering the work involved and number of people across both teams" said Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe to Reuters.

This deal is critical for both companies. Rivian struggling with a slowdown in EV demand, would receive a much-needed financial boost to continue production. It could potentially achieve profitability.

The partnership could also lead to better deals from suppliers for Rivian. They will benefit from increased buying power of Volkswagen and its subsidiaries like Audi and Porsche.

For Volkswagen, the deal offers access to Rivian's high-performance. It provides cost-effective EV technology.

Traditional automakers have been grappling with this hurdle. Volkswagen's software division Cariad was established to compete with Tesla.

However, it has been plagued by delays. Financial losses have also been an issue, partly due to sluggish decision-making.

The partnership discussions reportedly began with a private meeting. Scaringe met Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume at the Porsche facility in Atlanta last August. "We had deep conversation comparing notes on our products" said Scaringe. "We quickly realized we shared similar interests. Especially in certain vehicles." This led to serious discussions about collaboration.

Following the initial meeting teams from both companies visited each other's facilities. Rivian engineers travelled to Germany in fall.

Testing phase in California involved camouflaged Audis. This was described as a "scrimmage" by Scaringe. To overcome potential cultural clashes often seen in such collaborations, Volkswagen's leadership acknowledged the need to embrace Rivian's agility.

This is particularly true in software development according to Volkswagen software chief Wassym Bensaid.

While the future holds promise. Some hurdles remain. Full-fledged testing needs to be conducted. This ensures seamless functionality of Volkswagen vehicles equipped with Rivian's software. This is according to a source close to Volkswagen.

"This partnership has been a long time in making not a sudden decision," Scaringe reassured. The prospect of Rivian technology powering future Porsches is particularly exciting for Scaringe. He is a self-proclaimed Porsche enthusiast. "I can't wait to see Porsche on road with our technology in it," he concluded.

Lucas McClish, a California hiker who went missing on June 11, was found by a rescue team in the mountains after 10 days, the Santa Cruz County’s Office said.

McClish embarked on his brief three-hour hike into the mountains but somehow failed to navigate the route when he could not find the familiar landmarks due to previous wildfires in the area.

His family filed a missing report on June 16 when he did not show up for a Father's Day gathering.

This triggered a search effort that went on for several days before McClish was finally tracked.

David DePape, the man who attacked US Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was found guilty on five charges in a court in California on Friday (Jun 21). He was also convicted of aggravated kidnapping which mandates life in prison without the possibility of parole.

About the recent verdict

The verdict on Friday comes weeks after DePape, 44, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a federal judge after being convicted for the violent attack in October 2022.

A San Francisco jury, on Friday, found the 44-year-old guilty of first-degree burglary, false imprisonment, threatening a family member of a public official, aggravated kidnapping and preventing or dissuading a witness by force or threat.

DePape reportedly had no visible reaction as the verdict was being read in court and his lawyer, public defender Adam Lipson, later said that he plans to appeal it.

Ahead of the trial, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Harry Dorfman dismissed three charges that the 44-year-old was facing – attempted murder, assault of an elder and assault with a deadly weapon.

This was after DePape’s lawyers argued that the state trial represented double jeopardy following the federal conviction.

The attack in October 2022 on Paul Pelosi, who was 83 years old at the time, left him with multiple injuries including a fractured skull for which he was hospitalised for nearly a week.

Paul Pelosi’s attacker was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of assault and attempted kidnapping of a federal official, by the San Francisco federal court, in May.

DePape, a Canadian citizen who has lived in the US for around two decades was found guilty of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was in Washington DC at the time, instead confronted her husband who was eventually able to call the police.

What now?

Lipson said he was disappointed with the verdict and called the prosecutors’ decision to file a kidnapping for ransom charge “vindictive.”

However, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said all charges her office filed against the 44-year-old were based on evidence and since the jury was “able to find that he was guilty” there was “no need for any accusations of vindictive prosecution.”

The public defender said the verdict means that DePape will serve 30 years in federal prison after which he will be transferred to California “to spend the rest of his life in a California prison.”

Aaron Bennett, a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, on Friday, said that her family is grateful for the “kind thoughts and prayers they continue to receive,” but that they will “refrain from further substantive comment until sentencing is complete.”

DePape’s ex-wife removed from court

During the trial, the judge also removed DePape’s ex-wife, Gypsy Taub from the courtroom. The judge also barred her from the courtroom and the second floor of the courthouse for the rest of the trial after Dorfman said she attempted to tamper with members of the jury.

David DePape, the man who attacked US Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was found guilty on five charges in a court in California on Friday (Jun 21). He was also convicted of aggravated kidnapping which mandates life in prison without the possibility of parole. About the recent verdict The verdict on Friday comes weeks after DePape, 44, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a federal judge after being convicted for the violent attack in October 2022. Also Read | David DePape, who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband, sentenced to 30 years in prison Ahead of the trial, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Harry Dorfman dismissed three charges that the 44-year-old was facing – attempted murder, assault of an elder and assault with a deadly weapon. What now? Lipson said he was disappointed with the verdict and called the prosecutors’ decision to file a kidnapping for ransom charge “vindictive.” However, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said all charges her office filed against the 44-year-old were based on evidence and since the jury was “able to find that he was guilty” there was “no need for any accusations of vindictive prosecution.” The public defender said the verdict means that DePape will serve 30 years in federal prison after which he will be transferred to California “to spend the rest of his life in a California prison.” Also Read | Three killed, 10 injured in shooting outside grocery store in Arkansas, US Aaron Bennett, a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, on Friday, said that her family is grateful for the “kind thoughts and prayers they continue to receive,” but that they will “refrain from further substantive comment until sentencing is complete.” DePape’s ex-wife removed from court During the trial, the judge also removed DePape’s ex-wife, Gypsy Taub from the courtroom. A recent study from the University of Southern California suggests that the rapid expansion of internet satellite networks, exemplified by Elon Musk's Starlink, could pose a significant threat to the Earth's ozone layer.

The research, published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal, highlighted concerns over the potential environmental impact of the growing number of low-earth orbit satellites.

According to the study, which examined data from 2016 to 2022, the presence of aluminum oxide in the atmosphere has increased dramatically due to the re-entry of satellites like those in the Starlink constellation.

These satellites, designed with a short lifespan of about five years, contain significant amounts of aluminum that, upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, produce aluminum oxide.

This compound, the scientists warned, triggers chemical reactions that can lead to ozone depletion. Study said that the oxides could last for decades as the particles drift down.

“Only in recent years have people started to think this might become a problem,” one of the study’s authors Joseph Wang said. “We were one of the first teams to look at what the implication of these facts might be."

Nearly 18.7 tons of aluminum oxide nanoparticles, , in 2022 alone, were released into the atmosphere through satellite burn-up.

With plans to launch thousands more satellites annually, this number could skyrocket to 397 tonnes per year posing a serious risk of "significant ozone depletion."

While earlier satellites operated at higher altitudes, sacrificing speed for longevity, the new approach is to meet the soaring demand for global internet connectivity.
