California, US
A part of the Santa Cru Wharf in California collapsed in high surf on Monday (Dec 23), sending three people into the water, according to the authorities.
Meanwhile, a man died at a nearby beach after being trapped under debris by a wave.
The three people who were pulled from the water included two engineers and a project manager who were inspecting the structure. They were later taken to a hospital, according to city officials.
No one has been believed to be missing or is seriously injured, Mayor Fred Keeley of Santa Cruz said.
The wharf collapse is one of the several impacts of the weather-affected region, as flooding and high surf led to multiple road closures and evacuations.
According to the Santa Cruz officials, the collapse happened at around 12:45 pm.

"A portion of the Santa Cruz pier has collapsed, and is floating away," the National Weather Service Bay Area posted on X.
"Look at the ominous wave action on the horizon. You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water," they added.
The wharf has been closed now until further notice, officials said. Moreover, the public is asked to stay away from the area.
Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley said that the part of the pier that collapsed "was a portion of the municipal wharf that has already been determined to need to be taken down and repaired over time."
Keeley further said that it included the Dolphin restaurant and one of the public washrooms on the wharf.

California Confirms First Severe Human Case Of Bird Flu

First Severe Human Case Of Bird Flu In US Confirmed

A state of emergency was declared by California Governor Gavin Newsom in response to the widespread bird flu in the dairy cattle.

The declaration comes as California has become the outbreak's epicentre. In the last 30 days, California has tested positive more than 300 dairy herds.

"This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need," said Newsom, in the statement.

"While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus," he added.

The patient was a resident of Louisiana and was hospitalised in critical condition after getting infected most probably by a backyard flock.

The symptoms showed increased risks from the virus which had earlier caused conjunctivitis or eye redness in farm workers, who had got infected by the bird flu.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the general public is at less risk of getting infected by H5N1 bird flu.

Since April, the CDC confirmed 61 human cases, most of which were workers working on dairy farms which had cattle infected by the virus. The workers who culled the infected poultry also tested positive.

The Louisiana patient has been in critical condition and is suffering from severe respiratory illness, said the Louisiana Department of Health, in a statement.

Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security's senior scholar Amesh Adalja said, "The mild cases that we’ve seen in the United States largely reflect that many of the individuals are getting infected by dairy cows and that’s very different than getting infected with infected birds."

“If you look at the genotype of this patient in Louisiana, it wasn’t the cattle strain. It was a wild bird strain," he added.

Since March, 860 dairy herds in 16 states have been infected by the bird flu and 123 million poultry have been killed. The outbreak started in 2022.

On December 2, Los Angeles police declared Kobayashi a voluntary missing person.
At the time, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a news conference, "As the family is aware, late yesterday after travelling to the US-Mexico border, we reviewed video surveillance from US Customs and Border Protection, which clearly shows Kobayashi crossing the United States border on foot into Mexico."
“She was alone, with her luggage, and appeared unharmed," he further added.
From November 8 to 11, various surveillance footage showed her at multiple locations across LA. On November 11, Hannah was seen retrieving her luggage from the airport, and that was the last time she was seen.
Just after that, she stopped communicating with her family. Furthermore, her family members started receiving strange and unusual text messages from her number.

Missing Hawaii woman case: Was unaware of media frenzy, says Hannah Kobayashi after her return

Democratic party aides have been floating ideas for a Kamala Harris political comeback, looking forward to another run at the US's highest office even after Republican Donald Trump defeated Democratic Party nominee last month in the US Presidential elections.

Earlier also, Harris did not rule out a second run for the presidency and now has been reportedly considering a run for the California governorship, currently held by Gavin Newsom until 2027.

There were rumours that Newsom was also a presidential contender during this year's elections when Joe Biden stepped down from a rematch with Donald Trump.

Some Democratic party aides believe Trump has sufficiently overturned the norms of losing White House candidates' not attempting a second bite of the proverbial apple to give Harris the opportunity of a repeat bid in 2028, The Washington Post reported.

Donna Brazile, a Harris ally, Al Gore 2000 presidential campaign manager, and a political commentator, said, “Since Donald Trump has rewritten the rules—the norms—I don’t believe Kamala Harris or anyone should try to go with precedent, ever."

She added, "There are no rule books.”

“The rules potentially don’t apply this time, and she still absolutely could have a mulligan because of the unique circumstances of this race and the candidate switch," Molly Murphy, a pollster who worked on both the Biden and Harris campaigns said. “But I don’t think it will be a given.”

The Democratic Party has been shaping an argument, saying that her loss to Trump was not as comprehensive as has been popularly portrayed.

The man who opened fire at a school in the US state of California, injuring two children and later killing himself has been identified, said the police on Thursday (Dec 5).

Glenn Litton, a 56-year-old man, opened fire at Seventh-Day Adventist school in Oroville, California, on Wednesday (Dec 6), wounding two kindergarteners and later committing suicide.

According to the police, Litton was a homeless man with a long history of criminal offences and mental health issues. He died on the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot. The gun used in the attack is believed to have been a ghost gun – a weapon assembled from untraceable parts.

Criminal background

Speaking about Litton’s identification, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said the gunman’s criminal record goes back to his childhood with charges of theft, fraud, and forgery. He also stole the personal identities of several people in Butte counties and started putting up credit card bills in 2002.

Litton was arrested for possessing several items that he planned to use for carrying out a mass attack which included but was not limited to a bulletproof vest, parts of a stun gun and search history related to explosives.

How did Litton enter the school?

Before the attack, Litton pretended to be looking to enrol a non-existent grandson in the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists. The authorities believe this to be a ruse to gain access to the campus.

After travelling from the office of the school's principal, Litton walked through the school grounds toward the playground, where the shooting began, leaving two boys – Roman Mendez, six, and Elias Wolford, five, in critical condition.

They are still being treated in hospital, with the six-year-old undergoing several surgeries. Their survival has been defined by the sheriff as a "miracle" in light of the grievous nature of their injuries.

A woman based in the US state of California alleged that US President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet pick for Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth blocked her from leaving a hotel room before sexually assaulting her, CNN reported citing a police report. She even "remebered saying 'no' a lot".

The woman was only identified as "Jane Doe" in the 22-page long report released by the city attorney’s office of Monterey, California on Wednesday (Nov 20).

The alleged assault took place after a Republican women's conference at the Hyatt Hotel in Monterey, California, on October 8, 2017.

The report further highlighted some alleged details of the incident, stating how Hegseth was "very intoxicated" and was "giving off a creeper vibe".

However, Hegseth had repeatedly said that their encounter was consensual and he made sure the woman "was comfortable with what was going on between the two of them.”

Seems like, seven years after the alleged incident, such questions about Hegseth could hinder his nomination.

His attorney has said that Hegseth later entered into a settlement agreement with his accuser in 2023, with an undisclosed monetary payment and a confidentiality clause.

Hagseth said that his encounter with the woman was consensual, however, the lawyer said he was doubtful that the woman was about to accuse him during the #MeToo movement which might have have taken his Fox News job away.

“This police report confirms what I’ve said all along, that the incident was fully investigated, and police found the allegations to be false, which is why no charges were filed,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, told CNN on Wednesday night.

However, the records did not include copies of the video footage or a memorandum from the Monterey County district attorney’s office that could prove why Hegseth was never charged.

The accuser later told a hospital nurse that she “was not sure, but believes that something may have been slipped into her drink, as she cannot remember most of the night’s events,” and the nurse passed that on to police, according to the report.

The report added that the accuser had been drinking “much more than normal” that day.

The officers reviewed surveillance video from the hotel, showing the accuser and Hegseth “walking together, with arms locked together” leaving the bar and heading toward the hotel pool, with her smiling.

The accused told police that she argued with Hegseth near the hotel pool, an account that is supported by a hotel staffer who was sent to handle the disturbance and spoke to police, according to the report.

According to the report, the accuser recalled Hegseth telling her that he was “a nice guy” during the exchange.

However, in Hegseth's statement to police, he had no memory of the altercation by the pool.

The next memory Doe had was being in an unknown room with Hegseth. "Doe remembered having her phone and Hegseth inquired to whom Doe was texting,” the report said. “Hegseth took her phone from her hands. Doe stated she got up and tried to leave the room, but Hegseth blocked the door with his body. Doe remembered saying ‘no’ a lot.”

As per the report, Doe’s next memory was getting back to her room where she got into bed with her husband.

Hegseth’s account said that Doe led him by the arm back to his hotel room, which surprised him because he initially had no intention of having sex with her, the report said, adding that he found it "odd" that Doe did not leave his room.

Hegseth, according to the report, “continuously asked Doe if she was okay because he did not want Doe to get in trouble.”

He further told police that Doe "showed early signs of regret" the next morning, but did not explain further.

Doe remembered saying ‘no’ a lot.” As per the report, Doe’s next memory was getting back to her room where she got into bed with her husband. Hegseth’s account said that Doe led him by the arm back to his hotel room, which surprised him because he initially had no intention of having sex with her, the report said, adding that he found it "odd" that Doe did not leave his room. Hegseth, according to the report, “continuously asked Doe if she was okay because he did not want Doe to get in trouble.” He further told police that Doe "showed early signs of regret" the next morning, but did not explain further.
