A massive earthquake can drown several parts of America in the future, a new study has warned. Coupled with climate-change-driven sea-level rise, the quake will increase flooding across northern California, Oregon, and Washington. Not to mention, the quake will have effects of its own.
Researchers at Virginia Tech state in their paper that a powerful earthquake along the Cascadia subduction zone could cause coastal land to sink by as much as 6.5 feet, SciTech Daily reported.
The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences states that the most impacted would be southern Washington, northern Oregon, and northern California. These regions are densely populated, meaning people would lose their houses.
Tina Dura, lead author of the study and assistant professor of geosciences in the College of Science, and her team created thousands of earthquake models to estimate how much land would sink would be caused by a future Cascadia megaquake.

They also calculated how much the one per cent floodplain would expand across 24 estuaries and coastal communities along the fault zone.

Two earthquakes were studied - one today and another in 2100

Two timeline scenarios of the big one were taken into account - one that would hit today and the other in 2100. Scientists found that areas exposed to flooding would greatly increase when a quake hits today, helped by the rising sea water. 14,350 residents, 22,500 structures, and 777 miles of roadway would be in the post-earthquake floodplain.

In the year 2100 scenario, sea levels along the Cascadia subduction zone could be up to three feet higher than today. This means that the effects of future earthquake-driven subsidence would be three times greater.
Dura says the rise in sea levels and earthquake-driven subsidence will delay rescue and relief efforts for those affected by the quake itself. "Long-term effects could render many coastal communities uninhabitable,” Dura added.
The soil will become extremely saline, affecting cattle grazing and farming. Natural systems that act as a buffer against storm surges, like coastal estuaries, intertidal wetlands and protective dunes and beaches, will also be irreversibly eroded.
Dura and her team are studying ancient earthquakes. Their research suggests that over the last six to seven thousand years, 11 great earthquakes have hit approximately every 200 to 800 years in the Pacific Northwest. The last time this happened, 1.5 to 6.5 feet of land along the coastline sank.

California has waged a war against the Mediterranean fruit flies that are being dumped over the San Francisco Bay Area. The California Department of Food and Agriculture said in a press release that it is running an eradication campaign in the Alameda and Santa Clara counties.
As bizarre as it may sound, authorities are sterilising the male fruit flies who will then be transported in an airplane and released over the Bay Area. The intention is to disrupt the reproduction cycle. The sterilised male fruit flies will mate with wild female flies, but the mating cycle wouldn't unfold as expected.
The CDFA release explained that the process will lead to the birth of fruit flies that aren't viable. It added that the process is a " safe and environmentally friendly" method of extermination due to the absence of chemicals. The release added that millions of fruit flies are being released every week.

Hundreds of dolphins and four whales have washed ashore along the coast of California since March, puzzling scientists. What's causing the phenomenon? Who is responsible for these marine creatures ending up dead on the beaches? Experts collected the carcasses and decided to study them to reach the root cause.
They found that something had poisoned the whales and dolphins. A team from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration studied the 50 dead dolphins and four whales and concluded that they died from neurotoxins produced by a harmful algal bloom.
These toxins attack the nervous system and can even cause death. NOAA further said that several more of these marine animals had lost their lives. “Hundreds of additional dolphins and sea lions have also died in other areas of California since the first domoic acid impacts were detected near Los Angeles in February,” NOAA said in an update.

Scientists say that the ongoing harmful algal bloom has proved to be a death sentence for several creatures living along the coast of California. A type of algae called Pseudo-nitzschia australis releases Domoic acid, which gets collected in fish. When marine mammals eat them, it is passed on to them. The neurotoxin then attacks the brain and heart, causing seizures and permanent brain damage.

A newly proposed California ballot measure is making headlines not just for its content but for its provocative name. The "Luigi Mangione Access to Health Care Act," submitted by retired litigator Paul Eisner, aims to stop health insurance companies from refusing or delaying medical treatment recommended by doctors.
The initiative, filed with the state Attorney General’s office, would make it illegal for anyone other than a licensed physician to deny, delay, or alter a patient’s access to medical procedures or medications.
Eisner, who still holds an active law licence, said the proposal was inspired by his own experience battling cancer and fighting his insurance provider for care.

“People are tired of carriers, of insurance companies denying them health care,” Eisner told CBS 8.
Under the proposed law, patients would have the right to sue insurers and could be awarded legal fees and up to three times the amount in damages if they win.
The measure’s name has attracted criticism. Luigi Mangione is the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December. Bullet casings found at the scene were reportedly engraved with the words “delay” and “deny”, terms taken from the book Delay, Deny, Defend, which criticises the insurance industry's handling of claims.

Eisner defended his naming choice, saying, “For a very simple reason: it is getting the attention it needs, because sometimes things require publicity.”
The decision, however, has been condemned by health industry groups. The California Association of Health Plans, representing insurers across the state, said, “The lawyer behind this measure is trying to use a murder and act of terrorism to market his political agenda. It is a repugnant action by anyone, but especially someone sworn to uphold the Constitution and law.”

Eisner insisted he does not condone Mangione’s alleged actions. “I agree with what he was arguing, but I don't support his method. What I am doing is the right way to do it,” he said.
The public comment period for the initiative ends on 25 April. The Attorney General's office will then issue an official title and summary, which may exclude Mangione’s name. To qualify for the November 2026 ballot, the measure must receive over 546,000 valid signatures from registered California voters.

Luigi Mangione law? Proposed health bill lets patients sue insurers, draws fire over ‘murderer-inspired’ name

Sea lions living off the coast of California have been acting strangely for some time. Some of them are displaying aggressive behaviour, while others appear lethargic. Marine researchers suspect that this is the impact of a toxic algae bloom in the area. The algae is believed to be releasing domoic acid, a neurotoxin which is entering the sea lions' bodies through the fish they consume.
The toxins released by the algae can kill not only fish but also other mammals and birds. They can also prove harmful to humans, causing serious illness or death, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
According to the Marine Mammal Care Center, domoic acid can cause amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans and marine mammals. Jeni Smith, rescue supervisor at SeaWorld San Diego, told ABC San Diego affiliate KGTV that the sea lions appeared to be behaving in a strange manner.

He added that the algae bloom this year is expected to be worse than the one seen in 2023. Californians reported seeing a streak of light in the sky on Monday night that many believe to either be an asteroid or meteorite. The celestial occurrence was seen by people in the Bay Area at around 9 pm. Videos captured from Bethel Island in Contra Costa County and other places in Northern California show the strange light shooting in the sky.
The American Meteor Society also gathered several videos of the fireball and posted them online. However, according to the New York-based nonprofit scientific organisation, what people saw was not a visitor from space but merely debris from a rocket or satellite. Reports suggest that the debris belonged to a satellite mission launched by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral on September 28 last year.

Fireball in California - Meteorite or space debris?

Experts say that the satellite is named Dragon Freedom 2 Deb, and debris from it was expected to enter Earth's atmosphere the same night since it was in a decaying orbit. But it wasn't clear where it would fall.

A rare sight has returned to California's Lake Berryessa for the first time since 2019. The famous Glory Hole Spillway is in full flow. This massive circular drain at Monticello Dam funnels excess water into Putah Creek when the lake level rises about 440 feet. Located just east of Napa Valley, Lake Berryessa is a crucial reservoir providing water for about 500,000 people and supporting agriculture in Solano County. It is also a popular spot for boating, fishing, and camping. The spillway, 72 feet wide, is a design necessity built in 1957 because the narrow valley couldn't support a traditional channel. A week after deadly wildfires engulfed Los Angeles, more than six million people are still under critical fire threat across several counties in California as high winds are again expected to kick up on Wednesday (Jan 15).
The forecasters have again identified an area of "extreme fire danger", stressing the high-risk level in an area northwest to the city centre.
As per the forecast, in some mountainous areas, the winds can possibly reach speeds of 70 mph (113kmph), which would be nearly hurricane-force if they are sustained.

Further, the anticipated rise in speeds threatens to spread the remaining four fires, which firefighters have made progress in tackling the blaze.
However, on Wednesday morning, wind speeds began a slow and steady climb in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
They are expected to get intense during the day on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS further cautioned that the winds are "weaker but still strong" as compared to last week's conditions.
Currently, over 93,000 people are without electricity in California.
Earlier on Tuesday, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said, "The anticipated winds combined with low humidities and low fuel moistures will keep the fire threat in the LA region critical."

Moreover, areas of the northwest of Los Angeles, including Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, have been deemed to be particularly dangerous.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the scenes as "unimaginable", and vowed to exercise her executive powers to trigger rapid rebuilding efforts.
According to a report by The Washington Post, the Palisades and Eaton Fires are expected to be the most destructive in Los Angeles County's history.
Reportedly, California might also encounter a rare, deadly fire tornado phenomenon amid the ongoing wildfires.
The NWS on Tuesday warned that the combination of high winds and severely dry conditions has created a “particularly dangerous situation” in which any new fire could explode in size.
