India: 25 boats engulfed by massive fire at Vishakhapatnam harbour, criminal angle suspected

A rubber boat washed ashore on an Israeli beach on Sunday (Oct 1) near the city of Netanya. Migrant boat, with personal items strewn across, washes ashore in Israel

Six people died and 55 others were rescued when a boat filled with migrants and moving towards Britain sank in the Channel early on Saturday, said French maritime officials, as a search and rescue operation continued to find those still missing. 
 
French coastal authority's spokeswoman Premar said that around five to 10 passengers are still missing and they have managed to rescue 55 people. The authorities said that four French ships and a helicopter along with two British vessels were taking part in a rescue effort off Sangatte in northern France, adding that the British vessels rescued few survivors. 
 
Mayor of Teteghem Franck Dhersin said a vast rescue operation started at around 6 am (5 am BST) as multiple boats tried to cross Channel at the same time.

“Dover RNLI lifeboat has been sent as part of that assistance with Folkestone and Langdon Bay coastguard rescue teams. South East Coast ambulance has also been sent. HM Coastguard will continue to work with search and rescue partners to respond to those in distress around the seas and coastal areas of the UK,” HM Coastguard said. 
 
Volunteer Anne Thorel, who was on one of the rescue boats, speaking to The Guardian said, “We saved 54 people, including one woman. There were too many of them on the boat.”

Six killed, 55 rescued after boat carrying migrants capsizes in Channel

A hundred kilometres east of Abidjan, the capital of ivory coast, the lagoon that winds between the villages of the commune of Assinee, isolates the residents, cutting them off from access to emergency care. The solution? An ambulance boat.

Diving teams from the Indian Navy and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continued their search operations at the Poorappuzha estuary in Kerala's Malappuram district, where an illegal ferry capsized and caused the death of 22 people.

So far,&nbsp; 22 bodies have been recovered, 10 people are hospitalised and five swam to safety after the accident that occurred around 7pm on Sunday night. Given that this was an illegal ferry, there are no clear records about the number of passengers that were on board during the ill-fated ride. Estimates suggest that 35 or 40 people were on board. Not having clear details on the passengers on-board poses a serious challenge to the agencies involved in a search operation.&nbsp;

A 15-member diving team from the Southern Naval Command has been on the site since Monday noon and has been conducting an underwater search using a sophisticated Diver Held Navigation System (DHNS), equipment that locates underwater objects using SONAR beams.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Monday, the Kerala government announced that a judicial probe would be conducted to bring to light the wrongdoings that led to the accident. As per preliminary reports, there have been flagrant violations in the conduct of this tourist ferry. It is said that the boat was originally a fishing vessel that was later modified to ferry passengers did not have licence&nbsp;and lacked adequate safety measures to ferry people, the vessel sailed out well after the permissible ride timings, the vessel was overcrowded and carried twice the number of passengers, life vests were not provided to passengers etc. In connection with this, Kerala Police managed to arrest the boat owner by Monday evening.&nbsp;

Around 7 pm on Sunday, 'Atlantic', an illegal tourist ferry that carried around 40 passengers, capsized few hundred meters from the estuary, where the Poorappuzha river meets the Arabian sea.

Initial reports indicate that the ferry had capsized owing to overcrowding. As the incident took place after sunset, rescue operations faced several hurdles in the night hours.&nbsp;The first responders to this accident were the local people and fishermen and they were soon joined in by state authorities including police, fire and rescue teams etc.&nbsp;

Heinz issued a separate statement to the Guardian on Tuesday that said the company and François “are working out the logistical details of [getting] him his new boat” but didn’t elaborate further.

Heinz representatives spoke with the sailor via a Zoom conference call two days ago, according to a brief Facebook post on Sunday by Emo News, a Dominican media source.

Later, François informed authorities that he tried to use his smartphone to call his friends and let them know where he was, but the signal wasn't strong enough for him to do so.

He lived off a bottle of Heinz ketchup, garlic salt, Maggi soup cubes, and rainwater that he gathered with a cloth. On the boat's deck, he also inscribed the word "help" in English.

After that, according to François, "there was nothing else to do but sit and wait".

François said he was at sea for a total of 24 days, draining water from the boat to keep it from sinking and making vain attempts to kindle fire as a distress signal.

François was picked up by a cargo ship and left his sailboat at sea. Heinz set out to find him and provide him with a new boat after realising that he had managed to survive because of three daily dosages from one of the ketchup bottles produced by the food manufacturer.

However, it took some time to locate him, so Heinz posted a request on Instagram asking others to aid in the search for François.

This appeal, made through the #FindtheKetchupBoatGuy campaign, was seen by approximately 5 million people and received a record number of likes for Heinz, according to the company's statement to the Guardian. François was introduced to the campaign by Dominica's Emo News, who also contacted him.

After facing massive backlash online, the Associated Press has cancelled its plans to sell a video showing "migrants drifting in an overcrowded boat in the Mediterranean” as an NFT.&nbsp;

On Thursday, the news agency made a tweet in an attempt to advertise the clip. As it came amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the agency was accused of seeking profit off people's suffering.&nbsp;

AP has now deleted the tweet and cancelled the planned sale. However, it had earlier mentioned that the video would be available the next day through its new marketplace selling NFTs.

Behavioral scientist Caroline Orr Bueno, on her Twitter handle wrote, "The Associated Press has deleted a tweet advertising an NFT that sure looked a whole lot like an attempt to make money off the plight of desperate migrants."

She told CNN about the moment of discovery - “It was kind of like 'Holy Smokes! We've got a message in a bottle here. Cool!’”.

Upon taking the bottle back to the surface, Dowker found that its cork had been damaged and that bottle was filled with water.

Soon after, she fished out the note with a small tool and unrolled it to reveal the message which said the following: "Will the person who finds this bottle return this paper to George Morrow Cheboygan, Michigan and tell where it was found?"

The note was dated November 1926. Soon after reading the message, Dowker posted the discovery’s images on her company’s Facebook page, hoping to find someone related to Morrows.

"A foreign tugboat was confiscated as well as 283,900 litres (75,000 gallons) of petrol worth 233.71 billion rials ($20.2 million)," ISNA said, citing the coast guard chief in the southern province of Hormozgan.

"Twelve Philippine nationals were arrested and the relevant judiciary officials are currently taking the required legal measures," Major Hossein Dehaki was quoted as saying.

Dehaki said the group was suspected of operating a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-seizes-foreign-vessel-smuggling-fuel-state-media-240586">fuel-smuggling</a> ring and the confiscated shipment had been intercepted close to Sirik county in the Strait of Hormuz.

The seizure comes amid tensions in the Gulf after the United States unilaterally withdrew from a nuclear deal putting curbs on Iran's nuclear programme in return for relief from sanctions.

The escalation has seen ships mysteriously attacked, drones downed and oil tankers seized in the Strait of Hormuz a chokepoint for a third of world's seaborne oil.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps detained a "foreign tanker" in Gulf waters on July 14 for allegedly smuggling contraband fuel.

"With a capacity of two million litres and 12 foreign crew on board, the vessel was en route to deliver contraband fuel received from Iranian boats to foreign ships," the Guards said at the time.

Maritime tracking service TankerTrackers reported the Panamanian-flagged MT Riah, used in the strait for fuelling other vessels, had crossed into Iranian waters, and at that point, its automatic identification system stopped sending signals.

In the most high-profile seizure, the Guards impounded the British-flagged Stena Impero tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on July 19 for breaking "international maritime rules".

Iran also seized another ship on July 31 with seven foreign crew onboard over fuel smuggling, but it has not revealed the vessel's identity or the nationality of its crew.

Malaysia intercepted a boat carrying 56 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar off its northern island of Langkawi on Tuesday and will allow them to enter on humanitarian grounds, with rights groups expecting further such perilous journeys by sea.

The boat had also halted for short period of time in Thailand on Sunday where it underwent some repair work and loaded it with food and other supplies.

As per reports, the passengers were safe but tired and hungry and would be handed over to the immigration authorities for humanitarian reasons, meaning, that they will be allowed to stay and not be sent back to sea. &nbsp;

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said in a statement that the boat was carrying 19 men, 17 women and 20 children. It had since been escorted to the peninsula and its occupants handed over to immigration authorities for processing.

The refugees are said to be fleeing from overcrowded camps for the stateless minority in southern Bangladesh.

Malaysia's standard policy has been to turn away refugee boats attempting to make landfall, unless weather conditions are bad, though thousands have managed to enter the country over the years.

Boat carrying Rohingya refugees intercepted off Malaysia

An Indian Navy ship today located a fishing boat with nine crew members, reportedly missing from this city for the last 15 days, off Lakshadweep, a Defence spokesman here said.

The boat, Island Queen, was located by INS Kolkata 132 nautical miles north of Kavaratti in Lakshadweep, he said.

They have been provided with food and water.

&quot;All of them are safe... They are coming on their own their boat to Kochi,&quot; he said.

The vessel was reportedly missing for last 15 days and a request was received from local administration to search for it, he added.

The spokesman further said the naval ship continued with them for some time before going for another rescue operation.&nbsp;

The coastguard said on Twitter that 107 people had been rescued from the stricken vessel and 10 bodies had been recovered. 
 
It was possible the final death toll could be higher as dinghies used by people smugglers often carry up to 140 people. 
 
A total of 116 people were safely picked up in a separate operation in waters between Sicily and Libya on Thursday, the coastguard said.
