<p>“Across each of these engagements, we’ll continue pressing countries to help prevent the conflict from spreading, and to use their leverage with Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release the hostages,” Blinken told a news conference in Tel Aviv.</p>

Shuttle diplomacy: Blinken meets Jordanian King, Palestinian President Abbas in Amman

<p>US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on Sunday (Oct 8), stated that one of the intentions behind the unprecedented attack launched by Hamas may have been to derail the efforts that were being made to normalise ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.</p>

<p>"It wouldn't be a surprise that part of the motivation may have been to disrupt efforts to bring Saudi Arabia and Israel together, along with other countries that may be interested in normalising relations with Israel," Blinken told CNN in an interview on Sunday.</p>

<p>Blinken, in a separate interview with ABC, stated that in recent years, Hamas grew stronger because of the support it received from Iran.&nbsp;However, he also mentioned that for now, there wasn't any direct evidence linking Tehran's involvement to the assault.</p>

<p>"There's a long relationship between Iran and Hamas. In fact, Hamas wouldn't be Hamas without the support that it's gotten over many years from Iran. We haven't yet seen direct evidence that Iran was behind this particular attack is involved, but the - the support over many years is clear."</p>

<p>He added, "It's one of the reasons that over the last couple of years, we have been resolutely working against Iran's support for terrorism, for destabilising actions in other countries. We've sanctioned more than 400 Iranian individuals and entities precisely for the kind of support that they've offered Hamas in the past. And it's something that we remain extremely vigilant about." &nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is a massive terrorist attack that is gunning down Israeli civilians in their towns, in their homes, and as we've seen so graphically, literally dragging people across the - the border with Gaza, including a Holocaust survivor in a wheelchair, women and children. So, you can imagine the impact this is having throughout Israel. And the world should be revolted at what it's seen," he further added.</p>

<h2><strong>US working to verify reports of missing and dead Americans</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Blinken told US television that the administration was working to verify reports that US citizens were among the ones killed or held hostage&nbsp;in the Hamas assault.</p>

<p>Earlier, President Biden had said that fresh military aid was on its way to Israel with "more to follow over the coming days".</p>

<p>Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also "discussed ongoing efforts to ensure that no enemies of Israel believe they can or should seek advantage from the current situation,"&nbsp;the White House said in a statement.</p>

Hamas attack may have been designed to derail efforts to normalise Israel-Saudi Arabia ties, says Blinken

<p>US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday (Sep 28) that China was seeking to overtake the United States and become top power in the world. He also opined on the latest developments surrounding Taiwan.</p>

<p>A number of US presidents have described China as the top long-term challenge to the US. However, some analysts believe that China's ambitions are more focussed on reducing Washington's influence in Asia than being pre-eminent power in the world.</p>

<p>"I think that what it seeks is to be the dominant power in the world -- militarily, economically, diplomatically," said Blinken when asked at a forum about China's intentions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That's what Xi Jinping is seeking," he said.</p>

<p>"And in a sense, that's not a surprise. There's an extraordinary history in China," he added.</p>

<p>"I think if you look and listen to Chinese leaders, they are seeking to recover what they believe is their rightful place in the world."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Blinken was speaking at the event organized by The Atlantic magazine. In past, he has spoken in more indirect terms saying China was seeking to "reshape the international order."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tension are currently high between the US and China. President Joe Biden administration has maintained that it is clear-eyed on China and was stepping up pressure on the country. But it has also taken steps to maintain dialogue between the two nations. Blinken visited Beijing in June this year.</p>

<p>Taiwan is a major bone of contention between China and US. China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory and hasn't ruled out use of force to capture the self-governing, democratic island nation. China has held major military drills in the Taiwan Strait in past.</p>

<p>Taiwan is a hub for advanced semiconductors. Blinken said that Taiwan's role in global economy makes stakes over Taiwan issue "extraordinarily high"</p>

<p>"Were there to be a crisis over Taiwan precipitated by Chinese actions, you would have a global economic crisis," Blinken said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think the message that China is hearing increasingly from countries around the world is, don't stir the pot. &nbsp;</p>

He also opined on the latest developments surrounding Taiwan. A number of US presidents have described China as the top long-term challenge to the US. However, some analysts believe that China's ambitions are more focussed on reducing Washington's influence in Asia than being pre-eminent power in the world. "I think that what it seeks is to be the dominant power in the world -- militarily, economically, diplomatically," said Blinken when asked at a forum about China's intentions. "That's what Xi Jinping is seeking," he said. "And in a sense, that's not a surprise. There's an extraordinary history in China," he added. "I think if you look and listen to Chinese leaders, they are seeking to recover what they believe is their rightful place in the world." Blinken was speaking at the event organized by The Atlantic magazine. In past, he has spoken in more indirect terms saying China was seeking to "reshape the international order." Tension are currently high between the US and China. President Joe Biden administration has maintained that it is clear-eyed on China and was stepping up pressure on the country. But it has also taken steps to maintain dialogue between the two nations. Blinken visited Beijing in June this year. Taiwan is a major bone of contention between China and US. China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory and hasn't ruled out use of force to capture the self-governing, democratic island nation. China has held major military drills in the Taiwan Strait in past. Taiwan is a hub for advanced semiconductors. Blinken said that Taiwan's role in global economy makes stakes over Taiwan issue "extraordinarily high" "Were there to be a crisis over Taiwan precipitated by Chinese actions, you would have a global economic crisis," Blinken said. "I think the message that China is hearing increasingly from countries around the world is, don't stir the pot.  "We want -- everyone wants -- peace and stability and everyone wants the status quo to be preserved." <p>Blinken has raised the possibility of New Zealand and other partners engaging or joining this elite grouping. A pack which angered China that termed it 'destabilising' for the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The door's very much open for New Zealand and other partners to engage as they see appropriate going forward," Blinken said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We've long worked together on the most important national security issues. And so as we further develop AUKUS, as I said, the door is open to engagement," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Blinken's notable remark came a day after New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Wellington was "open to conversations" about a possible role in AUKUS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New Zealand has been nuclear-free since the mid-1980s and Hipkins said that they would consider it so long as it did not relate to the development of nuclear-powered submarines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead, officials appear to be eying cooperation on defence technologies such as cyber, artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons, which fall under the AUKUS agreement's so-called "pillar two".</p>

<p>Blinken was in New Zealand for just over a day. His arrival in the island nation was part of a three-country visit to the Pacific.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He met with New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta and will further travel to Australia on Thursday where the largest Australia-U.S. military exercise is due to begin.</p>

<p>Recently, accusations were made against New Zealand of giving importance to its trading relationship with China ahead of its friendships with fellow Five Eyes spy group members the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia.&nbsp;</p>
