The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that the US State Department was behind the targeted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling party and attempts to "destabilise India".

PM Modi-Led BJP Says US State Department Targeting India

The United States on Saturday (Dec 7) firmly reacted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s claims which alleged that the US State Department is trying to "destabilise India", its "deep state" elements are targeting India’s PM.

The US said that it is "disappointing" that the BJP would make such accusations.

Sambit Patra, the spokesperson of the ruling BJP on Friday, alleged that the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)'s articles are "singularly focused" on the Adani group and its alleged proximity with the Indian government to undermine PM Modi, further linking it with the US, saying that the OCCRP was funded by the US Agency for International Department and "other deep state figures" like George Soros.

The US embassy spokesperson further reacted to the BJP's allegations, and told WION, "It’s disappointing that the ruling party in India would make these kinds of accusations."

"The US government works with independent organisations on programming that supports professional development and capacity-building training for journalists. This programming does not influence the editorial decisions or direction of these organizations," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson also said that the US has long been a champion of media freedom around the world. “A free and independent press is an essential component of any democracy, enabling informed and constructive debate and holding those in power accountable.”

What were BJP's allegations?

Yesterday (Dec 6), the spokesperson of the ruling BJP said that the US deep state has been involved with a group of journalists and with the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to pull down India's growth story with unsubstantiated allegations and malicious reports without a "shred of evidence".

He further stressed that all of this is in conjunction with the US State Department.

"It has always been the US State Department behind this agenda," Patra added.

The Election Commission (EC) has asked the Jharkhand BJP to remove a social media post that allegedly violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) on Sunday (Nov 17). In its notice, the EC said that the post contains a "communal, malicious, and misleading video" with the caption "poore Jharkhand ka the party" ("The party of the whole Jharkhand"). The EC emphasised that such content appears to breach the MCC.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jharkhand has been directed to take swift action against the objectionable post. This includes issuing a notice to the BJP for clarification and coordinating with the state’s designated authority under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act to have the content removed from social media.

The EC’s order to the CEO read, "On perusal of the complaint, it appears that the above referred social media post is prima facie violative of the MCC. It is therefore, directed to take immediate action as per existing laws and procedures and thereafter direct the concerned social media platfoms, through the authority designated in the State of Jharkhand under section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act to take down the referred posts immediately."

This action follows a complaint filed by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress on Sunday, objecting to what they described as a "misleading and divisive" video shared by the BJP.

The first phase of voting for the Jharkhand Assembly elections was held on November 13, with the second phase scheduled for November 20. The counting of votes is set to take place on November 23.

Former BJP leader Anil Jha officially joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday (Nov. 17) in the presence of the party's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.

Welcoming Jha to AAP, Kejriwal described him as a significant leader of the Purvanchali community in Delhi. “Anil Jha is considered one of the biggest leaders of the Purvanchali community in Delhi. People from UP and Bihar come to Delhi for education and employment. For years, both the BJP and Congress ignored their needs. Shortly after joining AAP, Jha criticised his former party, comparing BJP's Delhi leadership to "spoilt sons" and the central leadership to an "old father" unable to control them.

Meanwhile, Kailash Gahlot, a distinguished leader in AAP and MLA from Najafgarh announced his resignation from the party and the Delhi Council of Ministers.

In a letter addressed to AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal that he later shared on social media, Gahlot pointed to the recent controversies and unmet commitments as reasons for his exit. He sent his resignations as minister to CM Atishi and from the party’s primary membership to Kejriwal.

The chief of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday (Nov 9) vowed to ‘throw out’ Bangladeshi immigrants from the eastern state of Jharkhand if voted to power during a campaign event in Palamu. JP Nadda, who is also the union health minister, stressed the children born to the ‘infiltrators’ following their marriage with local women will not be given tribal status.

"Every Bangladeshi will be thrown out of Jharkhand and along with that the way they marry tribal sisters and want rights on their tribal land, the children born from them will not be given any tribal rights," said the BJP national president. He also alleged that Jharkhand’s ruling JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha)-Congress coalition was taking no action against the infiltrators.

Describing the JMM-Congress government as "deceitful" and a "government of liars and thieves," Nadda said they failed to fulfil promises made to people, farmers and youth of the poll-bound state.

India: BJP chief vows to ‘throw out’ Bangladeshi immigrants during rally in poll-bound Jharkhand

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, alleged on Thursday (Nov. 7) that some "fair-playing businesses" were asked by a "senior minister" to publicly support Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. This claim followed Gandhi’s recent opinion piece, where he criticised the influence of "monopolists" over government institutions and argued that many fair-minded businesses were struggling under the government.

Gandhi posted on X, "After my article, many play-fair businesses are telling me that a senior Minister has been calling and forcing them to say good things on social media about PM Modi and the government's programmes. Proves my point exactly!" He did not specify which companies reportedly received these calls.

On Wednesday, Gandhi shared an opinion piece in which he discussed what he called a “match-fixing” arrangement between powerful businesses and the government. He claimed that the current administration is favouring monopolies, which stifle competition and restrict the growth of smaller businesses.

Gandhi wrote, "In contrast to the 'match-fixing' monopoly groups, there is a larger number of amazing 'play-fair' Indian businesses, from micro-enterprises to large corporations, but you are silent. You persevere in an oppressive system." He added that many of India's brilliant and dynamic business leaders were intimidated by these monopolists.

"The government cannot be allowed to support one business at the expense of all others, much less support benami equations in the business system. Government agencies are not weapons to be used to attack and intimidate businesses," he wrote.

In his article, Gandhi also addressed criticism from the BJP, saying, "I want to make something absolutely clear. I have been projected by my opponents in the BJP to be anti-business. I am not anti-business, in the least. I am anti-monopoly. I am anti-creating oligopolies. I am anti-domination by one or two or 3 or 5 people."

Sharing his article on X, Gandhi wrote, "Choose your India: Play-Fair or Monopoly? Jobs or Oligarchies? Competence or Connections? Innovation or Intimidation? Wealth for many or the few?"

India: LoP Rahul Gandhi claims 'senior minister' is pressuring 'play-fair businesses' to praise PM Modi

The BJP has accused the Congress party of distributing “blank copies of the Constitution” at Rahul Gandhi’s Samvidhan Samman Sammelan convention in Nagpur.

BJP said that this act by Congress insulted the Constitution and Dr. B R Ambedkar, revealing an anti-reservation and anti-Constitution stance. A video shared by the Maharashtra BJP on social media showed books labelled as the "Constitution of India" on the cover but containing blank pages, apart from the preamble on the first page.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala slammed Congress, saying, “Insulting the Constitution and BR Ambedkar is the true identity of Congress. At their so-called Samvidhan Samman Sammelan, Congress distributed copies of the Constitution. The cover was red, instead of the usual blue.”

He added, “Strangely, the inside of the copies was blank. This is an insult to the Constitution and a grave insult to Ambedkar. Congress has repeatedly insulted the Constitution and Ambedkar in this manner. They defeated Ambedkar in elections twice. Recently, Ambedkar’s picture was placed on the ground. Nehru spoke against reservations in 1961, and both Indira and Rajiv Gandhi opposed the Mandal Commission’s recommendations.”

In response, Congress accused the BJP of spreading a false narrative. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar clarified that attendees at the event were given a notebook and pen, not blank copies of the Constitution. Congress also posted on X, saying, “The whole of India knows that BJP and RSS are the enemies of the real Constitution, no matter how much they try to spread a false narrative by putting the cover of the Constitution on a blank book.”

The Congress further commented that the BJP aims to weaken the Constitution by making false allegations against its defenders, adding, “But under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the Constitution-loving people of the country will never allow this cunning plan of BJP to succeed.”

Another point of criticism was the colour of the copy held by Rahul Gandhi. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticised Gandhi for holding a “red book,” which he claimed symbolised an inclination towards “urban Naxals and anarchists.”

He said, “My allegations made two days back against Rahul Gandhi have proved true about his inclination towards ‘urban Naxals’. He showed the red book and tried seeking help politically from urban Naxals and anarchists. Rahul Gandhi indulges in such drama regularly and daily disrespects the Constitution in some or other way.”

The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with the vote count set for November 23. In the previous elections, held in 2019, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, and Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP had secured 122 seats, Shiv Sena 63, and Congress 42.

Meet Sunil Sharma: BJP's first-ever leader of opposition in Jammu and Kashmir

India’s top election body on Tuesday (Oct 29) rubbished the Congress party’s allegations of irregularities in the recent polls in Haryana state. The Election Commission of India said the Congress party is raising smoke of ‘generic doubts,’ stressing that each step in the whole process was carried out flawlessly.

"After a thorough reverification by Returning officers of all the 26 Assembly Constituencies under question, ECI writes to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge that each step in electoral process in Haryana was flawless and done under the watch of Congress candidates or agents," the ECI said in a letter.

The election body also warned the political parties against making ‘baseless’ allegations which can cause issues in the country.

"It is needless to remind that such frivolous and unfounded doubts have the potential of creating turbulence when crucial steps like polling and counting are in live play, a time when both public and political parties’ anxiousness is peaking," the ECI warned.

The poll body also stressed that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the process are totally “un-hackable.”

The ECI had then responded that it was a technical feature to help electoral officers assess the power levels in each machine and that it had nothing to do with the poll results.

In India, the debate over EVM’s credibility is not new, despite victories by opposition parties in several states. The country’s Supreme Court had also rejected allegations of irregularities in the EVMs in the days leading up to general elections earlier this year.

"The Commission normally refrains from responding to grievances relating to constituency specific decentralised electoral processes, whether in case of electoral roll or candidates or deployment of man and material or conduct of poll or counting, officials like ERO/ RO/DEO being the fully empowered election authorities. However, ECI is duty bound to protect and defend the integrity of the core design of this statutory decentralized scheme, that is being sought to be eroded or duplicated, by 'generic' petitions/grievances setting out false narratives without any evidence whatsoever, raised in proximity to polling or counting day, which have serious potential to fuel the surcharged environment," the ECI said in its letter .

The poll body also stressed that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the process are totally “un-hackable.” Also read: Haryana Election result 2024 Full Winner List: BJP records historic hat-trick in Haryana Congress party, which suffered a shocking defeat in Haryana, earlier alleged that the EVMs which showed BJP winning were 99 per cent charged, whereas those showing Congress in lead were 60-70 per cent charged. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that the Constitution is "under attack" by the BJP as he accused the saffron party of controlling institutions such as the Election Commission, bureaucracy and central agencies. He also said no force can stop the caste census and removal of the 50 per cent cap on the reservation.

"The Constitution is under constant attack from all sides, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and it needs to be protected," Gandhi alleged while addressing 'Samvidhan Samman Sammelan' in Ranchi ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly polls.

In a no-hold-bar attack, he accused the BJP of "controlling the Election Commission, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), income tax department, bureaucracy and judiciary".

"The BJP also controls funds and institutions but we possess honesty. The Congress fought the Lok Sabha elections without money," he claimed. Gandhi said the caste census is a "medium for getting social X-ray but PM Modi is opposed to this".

"However, no force can stop caste census, institutional survey and removal of 50 per cent cap on reservation despite no media, judiciary support," he said. This was Gandhi's first visit to Jharkhand after the assembly poll schedule was announced.

The assembly polls will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20 and counting will take place on November 23. Earlier in the day, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that the INDIA bloc will contest the upcoming assembly polls together and the Congress and the JMM will field candidates in 70 of 81 seats.

Seat-sharing talks are on with alliance partners - the RJD and the Left parties - for the remaining 11 seats, he added.
