Meet Sunil Sharma: BJP's first-ever leader of opposition in Jammu & Kashmir

Sunil Sharma was appointed as the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir BJP legislature party on Sunday (Nov 3), marking a historic moment as he became the first Leader of Opposition from the BJP in the Union Territory.

A spokesman of the BJP announced, “Sunil Sharma has been elected as the BJP legislature party leader. He will be the leader of the opposition in the Assembly,” following a meeting held in Srinagar.

Sharma was elected for a second term, securing victory in the newly formed Padder Nagseni constituency, which emerged from the 2022 delimitation process. He faced stiff competition from Pooja Thakur of the National Conference, the current chairperson of the District Development Council (DDC) Kishtwar.

After his election, Sunil Sharma expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him. He stated, “With the help, experience and blessings of my MLA colleagues, I will discharge my duties. Keeping in mind the party policies and aspirations of the people, we will be the voice of the people in the assembly and outside as well.”

Background of Sunil Sharma

Sunil Sharma has completed his education up to Class 12 and is currently pursuing his graduation at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar. His financial disclosures show assets worth ₹3 crore ($356574.60) and liabilities totalling ₹3 lakh ($3565.75). Previously, he represented the Kishtwar constituency in the 2014 assembly elections and served as minister of state for science and technology and transport, with independent charge.
