Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari&nbsp;said on Wednesday that the relations between Pakistan and the United States are no longer linked to India or Afghanistan. Bhutto is currently in the United States for discussions over enhanced trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.&nbsp;

“Not only I am pleasantly surprised, but I am absolutely impressed by the new foreign policy approach of the US towards Pakistan,” Bilawal said at Washington DC-based think-tank, Woodrow Wilson Centre.&nbsp;

“There is also an increased feeling in our [Pak-US] interaction that we are no longer hyphenated – Afghanistan-Pak or Pak-India. Only Pak-US that’s a good thing,” he added.&nbsp;

Bhutto also launched an attack on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he said that India has changed a lot since 2010. He said that Modi is not like his predecessors Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh and even talked about the 2002 riots in Gujarat.&nbsp;

He also said that the reaction from India in the aftermath of United States’ decision to give $450 million to upgrade Pakistan’s fleet of F-16 aircraft did not surprise&nbsp;him.&nbsp;

“Obviously, Indians are going to be upset, let them be,&nbsp;kiya karein&nbsp;(what do we do),”&nbsp;he said.&nbsp;

Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar had criticised the US decision regarding the F-16 fighter jets and said that the relationship between the US and Pakistan has not served both countries well.&nbsp;

Very honestly, it is a relationship that has ended up serving neither Pakistan nor serving American interests well... for the US to reflect what the merits of the relationship [are] and what they get by keeping it sort of continuing,” Jaishankar said at a community event in Washington.&nbsp;

United States was quick to respond as state department spokesperson Ned Price said that the White House doesn’t view its ties with New Delhi&nbsp;and Islamabad "in relation to one another”.&nbsp;

"We don't view our relationship with Pakistan... our relationship with India... in relation to one another... both partners of ours with different points of emphasis...," he said.

He was speaking to WION’s Anas Mallick in Tashkent after the conclusion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers Meeting. When asked about engagement with India, the Pakistani foreign minister said that “India is our neighbour, unfortunately, you can not change your neighbour. You can choose a lot of other things in life but not your neighbour.”&nbsp;The foreign minister&nbsp;also said that there were&nbsp;no plans at the moment for the Pakistani and Indian prime ministers to meet on&nbsp;the sidelines of the SCO Heads of States meeting that is due to be held in September this year in Uzbekistan.

WION: How would you like to sum up this visit? The engagement you have had?

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: I think it’s an incredibly important visit for us. You know we are part of SCO family. This is the first time we managed to meet in-person post-Covid pandemic. This is an incredibly productive experience, not only within the context of the SCO. We had countless agreements today, also our bilateral meeting. We are engaged with foreign ministers of Central Asian counties. This was the third bilateral meeting with foreign minister of China. Second in-person so far. I also got chance to briefly interact with the Russian counterpart on the sidelines. Overall, it was incredibly productive.

WION: Do you&nbsp;see that in September there is a potential for Pakistan and Indian PMs meeting through this platform?

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: No such plan exists at the moment.

WION: Have you met your Indian counterpart? This was an elephant in the room.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: We both are members of SCO family in that context we engage in the broader activities of SCO and council of foreign ministers but we didn’t have any bilateral engagement.

WION: Is there any level of engagement between the two countries? Even back-channel talks? As foreign minister, how do you see issues between India and Pakistan getting resolved?

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: India is our neighbour. You can choose a lot of things in your life but you&nbsp;can’t choose your neighbour. We have to live with one another. Unfortunately, the event of August 2019, the recent Islamophobic statements by officials of the ruling party obviously make it difficult for us to engage constructively.

WION: Former PM Imran Khan has been criticising the govt saying that it is lacking with respect to its foreign policy on America.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: I think there is no substance to those claims. Pakistan’s foreign policy is one of engagement. We engage with all countries. We are looking to find economic opportunities for our people, enhancing economic co-operation in West and East. Obviously, we engage with America as well. Mr Khan also attempted the same thing while he was in power. He tried to engage with all countries, including America, it’s not our fault&nbsp;that he was unsuccessful.

WION: The coalition government recently witnessed huge defeat in Punjab. The country’s economy has been on the downhill since the shocker of the defeat in Punjab. You hold a very important portfolio. How do you plan on connecting the&nbsp;economic policy with economic diplomacy and how do you plan on boosting the government following this defeat in Punjab?

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: As far as the situation in Punjab is concerned, the 20 seats where the&nbsp;by-election was held, all of them belonged to the opposition. The government&nbsp;ally still managed to secure 5 seats. The opposition lost 5 seats. But I understand there&nbsp;is political turbulence at home and everybody is aware of it. As far as the economic condition is concerned, every Pakistani knows the situation. The challenge which has developed has not developed in the last three months. It developed over the past 4 years (when) Mr Khan’s government increased the debt. In fact, between 2018-2022, the amount of debt Mr Khan’s government&nbsp;accumulated for Pakistan is equivalent to all debt in Pakistan’s history from 1947 to 2018. No one believes that economic catastrophe can be addressed in three months. As far as the foreign policy is concerned, I am trying my best. Our team members are trying their best to address the multifaceted challenges we are facing.

Exclusive: India is a neighbour, we cannot choose our neighbours: Pakistan FM Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to WION

Underlining that Pakistan's relations with India have not been 'moving forward' as one hoped for, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday said that is expecting day both the countries bury the hatchet and return to normal ties.

His comments came at the annual Pakistan Breakfast session in Davos, organised by Pathfinder Group and Martin Dow Group on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2022, reports PTI news agency.

“That day will have to come. That day we will unlock our full economic potential, and all will share the fruit of prosperity,” Zardari was quoted as saying.

His response came while talking about various steps required to unlock Pakistan’s economic and trade opportunities, including with its various neighbours.

“I hope that day will come in my lifetime, when we are able to resolve the conflicts in our region and that day, we will be able to unlock our full growth potential,” he said while talking about numerous conflicts in the neighbourhood of his country.

Bhutto batted for more robust trade relations will of its neighbours, including India.

“We have not been able to maximise our trade with China. Our relations with India have obviously been not moving forward, but one day we will get to the position where international institutions will come to ensure the international order.

“Definitely, there will be a day when we will be able to engage with our neighbour to the east, not just diplomatically but also economically,” he said.

‘Hopefully...one day’: Pak foreign minister Bhutto bats for normal ties between New Delhi and Islamabad

After talks with his Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in Guangzhou on Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the US Indo-Pacific strategy is one of inciting hostility and undermining peace.

"The United States' Indo-Pacific strategy creates severe anxiety around the world, particularly in Asia Pacific countries," he said, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.

The real goal of this plan, according to a Chinese top diplomat, is to confine China and make Asia-Pacific countries pawns in the face of US hegemony.

"Facts will prove that the so-called Indo-Pacific strategy is in essence a strategy to create division, to incite confrontation, and to undermine peace," Wang said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, ahead of his departure to Japan, that the Quad leaders' summit in Tokyo will evaluate the status of the bloc's projects and address developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

This was Bilawal’s maiden visit to China after he took over as foreign minister following the fall of the Imran Khan-led government last month.

The US "Indo-Pacific Strategy" is bound to be a failed strategy, Wang said in the comments posted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on its website.

China refers to the area as the Asia-Pacific region and is averse to the Indo-Pacific strategic concept, which has gained prominence during previous President Donald Trump’s tenure and is vigorously pursued by his successor, Biden.

The Asia-Pacific should become a plateau for peaceful development, rather than a geopolitical arena. Attempts to turn the Asia-Pacific into a bloc, like NATO or the Cold War, will never succeed, Wang said.

The Quad grouping of the US, Japan, India and Australia focussed on free and open Indo-Pacific while Beijing likens it to ‘Asian NATO’ aimed to contain its rise.

The US, India and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s rising military manoeuvring in the resource-rich region.

Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam all claim parts of the disputed South China Sea, while China claims practically all of it. In the South China Sea, Beijing has constructed artificial islands and military outposts. In the East China Sea, China has territorial disputes with Japan.

In the name of "freedom and openness," Wang claims that the US&nbsp;Indo-Pacific strategy is bent on building "cliques." China claims the alliance will "alter China's surrounding environment." Its goal, according to Wang, is to restrain China and turn Asia-Pacific countries into "pawns" of US hegemony.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday met Pakistan's Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the UN headquarters here and discussed strengthening their economic and commercial ties, as well as regional security situation, amid unprecedented deterioration in bilateral ties during the previous Imran Khan regime.

The two leaders also discussed Afghan stability, support for Ukraine, and democratic principles.

"BBhuttoZardari and I reaffirmed our shared desire for a strong and prosperous U.S.-Pakistani bilateral relationship. I look forward to expanding our cooperation on climate, trade and investment, and regional peace and security issues," Blinken tweeted.

Pakistan's relations with the US have been lukewarm, especially under the Biden administration.

Bilwal's US visit is taking place amid unprecedented deterioration in Pakistan-US ties, triggered by former prime minister Khan's claim that Washington conspired with Pakistan's Opposition leaders to topple his government. The Biden administration had rubbished Khan's repeated allegations.

State Department Spokesperson Ned Price, in a readout of the meeting, said that they discussed expanding partnership in climate, investment, trade, and health as well as people-to-people ties.

They underscored the importance of US-Pakistan cooperation on regional peace, counterterrorism, Afghan stability, support for Ukraine, and democratic principles, the readout said.

Blinken welcomed Pakistan's Chairmanship of the G77 and committed to advancing climate action and global food security.

Bilawal, who assumed charge as the foreign minister, is on a maiden visit to the US at the invitation of Blinken to attend the ministerial meeting on the "Global Food Security Call to Action" to be held at the United Nations later Wednesday. The US is President of the UN Security Council for the month of May and Blinken is in New York to convene meetings to mobilise action on global food security.

In his remarks before his meeting with Bilawal, the first face-to-face interaction between the two ministers, Blinken said Washington is "very pleased" to be working with the foreign minister and with a new government in Pakistan.

"We're both here, of course, first and foremost for the ministerial meeting we're having a little bit later today on food security. This is a challenge that we're seeing around the world. There was a pre-existing condition, as it were when it comes to food insecurity in many places. It's been exacerbated dramatically by Russia's aggression against Ukraine, adding another 40 million people to those who are food insecure," he said.

On May 19, Blinken will chair the first signature event of the United States' presidency of the UN Security Council: an open debate focusing on the critical links between conflict and food security.

Blinken also added that "this is an important opportunity" for the two countries to "talk about the many issues where we're working together."

Bilawal said Islamabad is aware that recent geopolitical events have aggravated the global food security situation "and countries like Pakistan have already been facing challenges in food security, water security, and energy insecurity because of a whole host of issues ranging from climate change to issues in our neighbourhood. So this particular initiative is most welcome and most important."

He said he looks forward to increasing engagement between Pakistan and the US, working with the Biden administration to "improvetrade relations between Pakistan and the US and create opportunities for American investors, and Pakistani investors, and Pakistani businessmen, and American entrepreneurs to work together."

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will meet Blinken on the heels of a furious anti-US narrative peddled and pushed by former prime minister Imran Khan.

The talks with Secretary Blinken would focus on enhancing bilateral trade ties, talks on Afghanistan. Discussions on overall situation in the region are likely to take place as well. Possible points of discussion may also include US role in India-Pakistan relations, the Kashmir issue as well as Pakistan's economic situation. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday asserted that the only way to remove Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government was to table a no-confidence motion.

Speaking at a press conference, Bilawal vowed to convince the members of the opposition`s 11-party alliance--Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)--on the strategy, although he called on Imran Khan to voluntarily step down because of his "failure at all fronts," Dawn reported.

"It is the only way out... We are not anarchists. We believe in democracy and legal process. This is the only way out, I think. We need to go through the parliament for every move," he said at the press conference.

The PPP chairman further accused Khan`s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government of pre-poll rigging ahead of Senate elections and asked political and democratic forces of the country to be vigilant.

"We see the government is already making efforts... And they would use their ATMs for this [Senate elections]. They are actually in a state of panic and in that state they are making absolutely illogical moves. For instance, they have moved the court on an issue [open vote for Senate elections] which absolutely has no sense. I hope the court would send it [the presidential reference] back to the parliament and issue orders that it was the prerogative of the parliamentarian to decide the matter," he said.

According to The Express Tribune, the government through Attorney General for Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan has sought an interpretation of Article 226 of the Constitution through the presidential reference. The article states that all elections, other than those of the prime minister and chief ministers, shall be held through secret ballot.

The government believes that open ballots in the Senate elections can be introduced by amending the Election Act 2017, instead of amending the Constitution, The Express Tribune further reported.

However, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday opposed holding Senate elections through open ballot without amending the Constitution.

The opposition parties contend that a constitutional amendment is required to change the voting mode.

The ECP, through its counsel Sajeel Sheryar Swati, submitted a concise statement in the presidential reference case in the Supreme Court, which is being heard by a five-judge larger bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed.

Pakistan`s federal government has decided to hold Senate elections in February instead of March 2021. The polls are expected to result in the loss of seats for PDM, which currently controls the Upper House.

According to Dawn, witnesses said Wazir was arrested after he attended a ceremony held at Shuhada APS Public Library in connection with the sixth anniversary of the Army Public School attack, where 147 people were killed.

Several leaders of the PTM, who have also been charged in the case, were also present but were not arrested. Apart from Wazir, others named in the FIR include PTM chief Manzoor Pashteen and MNA Mohsin Dawar among others.

The complainant in the case claimed that when he reached the venue of the public meeting he saw the suspects addressing around 2,000 participants and trying to create hatred towards different groups and to create law and order problems, Dawn reported.

Musharraf,76, was sentenced to death for abrogating the Pakistan constitution and imposing emergency in 2007 in a case which began in 2013. Musharraf currently lives in self-imposed exile in Dubai.

"The due legal process seems to have been ignored including constitution of the special court, denial of fundamental right of self defence, undertaking individual specific proceedings and concluding the case in haste," the Army asserted.

"Armed forces of Pakistan expect that justice will be dispensed in line with the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," it added.

Musharraf had resigned in 2008 over the threat of impeachment proceedings and had gone into exile in Dubai, however, he returned in 2013 to contest the polls in Pakistan but was barred from leaving the country.

Wazir and Dawar are accused of inciting local people to attack the Kharqamar military check post in North Waziristan district on Sunday which resulted in the killing of at least three civilians.

Bilawal, the chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), stood up to record protest against Khan's remarks. But several lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Tehreeki-i-Insaf (PTI) went near his seat and raised slogans.

It brought rival members of the House face to face, creating a tense situation. The opposition also surrounded Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri who chaired the session and continued protest until the proceedings were adjourned.

The enraged Opposition later demanded a probe by Parliament into the Kharqamar incident. It also demanded that both Wazir and Dawar should be allowed to attend the session.&nbsp;

"All Opposition parties are standing together today. What we saw in the Assembly a little while ago was anything but a display of democracy; the deputy speaker violated House rules by not letting Opposition members speak on these sensitive issues," said Bilawal.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken a swipe at opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for addressing Parliament in English, saying this was an insult to the country's "90 per cent population" which cannot speak the western language.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken a swipe at opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for addressing Parliament in English, saying this was an insult to the country's "90 per cent population" which cannot speak the western language. Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Hyderabad University here on Thursday, Khan said that despite Urdu being the national language, public speakers choose to speak in English. ''Bilawal delivers his speeches in English when addressing the parliament. This is patronising and insulting to the more than 90 per cent of Pakistanis who can't speak English,'' he was quoted as saying by the Express Tribune. The 30-year-old Oxford educated chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), on Thursday delivered a speech in English while addressing party supporters at an event to commemorate the death anniversary of PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the paper reported. We know the majority don't understand the language. Why do we then speak in English on public forums in the country despite knowing Urdu? Imran Khan asked. Khan said there was an overriding sense of inferiority among such people who believe they won't be considered educated unless they speak in English. "The trend dated back to the era of Pervez Musharraf as part of his enlightened moderation' policy. In that period, we picked up certain western values and habits that are an aberration for our society. We need to change this trend, Khan said.
