A new regulation that prohibits the majority of foreign homebuyers from purchasing houses for investment purposes for two years took effect in Canada on 1&nbsp;January 2023. This was done to enable those who live in the country to afford homes.

However, there are a number of&nbsp;exceptions to the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by the Non-Canadians Act. It enables non-Canadian citizens who are immigrants or permanent residents to buy property. Students and migrants are also not covered by it.

As reported by The New York Times, the ban&nbsp;does not cover vacation houses in "recreational zones" and only to "census metropolitan areas" and "census agglomerations," which are essentially cities that fulfill specific demographic requirements. Additionally, the law does not apply to home buyers with Canadian spouses or partners and foreigners buying multifamily dwellings with more than three units.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the Taliban announced the decision to ban female education in a letter sent by the higher education ministry to the universities, which was widely condemned by the United Nations and foreign governments.

According to the reports, armed forces were deployed in huge numbers outside the educational institutes across the nation and the girl students were asked to leave.

Meanwhile, a small group of women in Afghanistan staged a protest against the ban imposed by the Taliban on female education in Kabul, said an activist, adding that few women were arrested.&nbsp; 
"They expelled women from universities. Oh, the respected people, support, support. Rights for everyone or no one!," the protesters chanted as they protested in Kabul.

In the rally, a protester said that few girls were arrested, however, two were released and few remain in custody. Almost two dozen women veiled in hijabs were seen raising hands and shouting slogans as they protested through the streets.

People were in disbelief after the ban was announced as it came less than three months after many female students were permitted to appear for university entrance exams.

The Indian government may soon ban sale of loose cigarettes in order to curb use and sale of tobacco products, said reports. A Standing Committee of the Indian parliament has recommended such a ban. The committee has also recommended doing away with smoking zones from all airports in the country.

It is being reported that the government may announce the ban ahead of Union Budget 2023-24.

While making recommendations, the Standing Committee has observed that even after implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, there hasn't been increase in the tax on tobacco products. The committee has also highlighted the risk for cancer in those who smoke or chew tobacco.

As per current tax slabs, 53 per cent tax is levied on cigarettes while smokless tobacco attracts 64 per cent tax. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended Government of India that a 75 per cent tax must be imposed on tobacco in the country.

Around 350,000 people die every year in India due to smoking cigarettes. India's National Council of Applied Economic Research conducted a survey in 2018 that showed 46 per cent of the people who smoke were illiterate while 16 per cent were college going students.

Smoking in public places is already banned in India.

Taiwan has been thinking about banning TikTok, as the government authorities believe that the social media site is being used by China to wipe out the confidence of the country's citizens in the government.&nbsp;

The Chinese-invested social media platform has been already banned from devices of the public sector by Taiwan over security concerns and the fear of a “cognitive warfare” campaign, the South China Morning Post reported.&nbsp;

However, the authorities have been hesitant to ban TikTok on personal devices and in the private sector, considering the implication it may have on freedom of speech and information.&nbsp;

The National Security Bureau of Taiwan alleged that TikTok is being increasingly used by Beijing to influence the public on the island and break their confidence and faith in the government.

In May, Bureau director Chen Ming-tong stated that Taiwanese are being trained and paid by Beijing to influence the young audience present on social media platforms like TikTok, Xiaohongshu (Instagram's Chinese version) and YouTube, as part of China's “cognitive warfare” against Taiwan.

The Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice said that they are investigating the reports which claim that videos alleging corruption within Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's government and ridiculing the defences of the country have been circulated on TikTok.&nbsp;

China, which considers Taiwan its territory, has stated that it will use force to bring the island under its control. Ho stated that the government must devise “plans to regulate” TikTok's use in Taiwan.
