Tokyo Olympics: Hockey - Belgium claim first gold after shootout win over Australia

The drunken antics of Australian Olympians who vomited and disrupted passengers on their flight home from Tokyo had shamed the entire team, a top official said Wednesday.

As New Zealand athletes faced allegations of similar loutish behaviour on their returning flight, Australia's Olympic chef de mission labelled the conduct of his team members "completely unacceptable".

"I'm pretty upset about this because a few people are damaging the reputation of a very strong unit, a unit that is representing us over here very proudly," Ian Chesterman said.

Chesterman confirmed Japan Airlines wrote to the Australian Olympic Committee complaining about the behaviour of athletes on a flight that arrived in Sydney on Friday.

"JAL advised that team members had drunk excessively, failed to respond to requests of cabin crew and caused disruption to other passengers," he said.

"This behaviour is clearly unacceptable and does not meet the standards set by this team."

Chesterman said at least one athlete vomited in a toilet, rendering it unusable for the rest of the 10-hour flight, but could not confirm reports the Olympians raided the plane's alcohol cabinet after being refused further drinks.

He said there were 49 athletes from nine sports on the flight but the troublemakers all came from the men's rugby and football teams.

Chesterman said the sports' governing bodies would determine what punishments were imposed.

"They're taking it very seriously, which is important to us," he said, adding that athletes faced "unquestionable tension and stress" with tight coronavirus restrictions during the Games.

New Zealand's Olympians have also been accused of unruly behaviour on a flight from Tokyo to Christchurch, including drunkenness and breaching Covid-19 restrictions by throwing used facemasks at cabin crew.

New Zealand based website reported the athletes became so rowdy that one of the pilots came out from the cockpit and told them to settle down.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee defended its athletes.

"We can understand that following year of training and a very successful, and extended, Olympic campaign, some athletes wanted to celebrate with their teammates before entering two weeks of MIQ (quarantine)," NZOC spokeswoman Ashley Abbott said.

"We have not received any complaints from the airline."

Abbott did not respond when asked if the alleged coronavirus rule breaches were being investigated.

Australian home prices rose in July even as the Coronavirus lockdown curbed auctions in Sydney. A lockdown did nothing to stop Sydney gaining another 2.0% in the month, to be up 18.2% on a year ago. The red-hot market has provided a huge windfall to consumer wealth and confidence.

A blaze at a massive Tesla battery site in Australia that started three days ago was brought under control on Monday, firefighters said.

Emergency services were first called to the Victoria Big Battery project — built by French renewable energy firm Neoen using Tesla batteries — on Friday morning.

A 13-tonne lithium battery inside a shipping container had caught fire at the site near Geelong, about an hour's drive from Australia's second city Melbourne, the Country Fire Service (CFA) said.

"There was one battery pack on fire to start with, but it did spread to a second pack that was very close to it," incident controller Ian Beswicke said in a statement.
Images released by the CFA showed a cloud of smoke rising from one of the units at the site.

The fire service said the incident had been declared "under control" just after 3 pm on Monday.

"Firefighters have successfully completed the operation of opening all doors to the container of the battery, with no sign of fire," the CFA said in an update.
Fire authorities said the cause of the blaze was unknown.

"A smaller number of firefighters and fire trucks from CFA will remain on scene for the next 24 hours as a precaution in case of reignition, the update added.

"The will continue taking thermal temperature readings two-hourly to monitor damaged units."

The battery site — one of the largest in the world — is designed to store energy produced by renewables and send power to the grid.

Local residents were initially warned about the possibility of toxic smoke but the Environmental Protection Agency said monitoring had shown "good air quality" near homes.

Neoen Australia managing director Louis de Sambucy said no one was injured in the incident, and with the site disconnected from the grid, there had been no impact on electricity supply.

"Investigation preparations are underway and physical inspections will commence once the CFA have completed their procedures," he said.

GERMAN WIN

Australia will face Germany on Tuesday after the Germans secured an easy victory over Olympic champions Argentina.

Germany opened the score in the 19th minute when defender Lukas Windfeder shot a penalty corner low and hard at the left side of the goal, leaving Argentina goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi no chance to stop the ball.

Ten minutes into the second half, the German side added to their advantage after scoring through another penalty corner, which gave them little left to fear from the Argentineans.

"It's hot weather and hot-minded Argentina and we just want to keep it cool and play our German style and I think we did exactly that," said forward Christopher Ruhr.

Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane and other parts of Queensland state will enter a snap Covid-19 lockdown from Saturday as authorities race to contain an emerging outbreak of the Delta strain.

Millions of residents in the city and several other areas will be placed under stay-at-home orders from Saturday afternoon for three days, state Deputy Premier Steven Miles said.

"The only way to beat the Delta strain is to move quickly, to be fast and to be strong," Miles said.

Six new cases were reported Saturday in a cluster of the Delta variant initially linked to a school student, resulting in pupils and teachers at two schools being placed into isolation.

In the "strictest lockdown" the city has enforced, residents will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons, including buying groceries and exercising.

Brisbane's snap lockdown comes as Australia's largest city of Sydney and its surroundings completed a fifth week of lockdown, with authorities struggling to stop the spread of a Delta variant outbreak there.

"We cannot afford to be complacent just because we have done so well so far. We all we have to comply with these restrictions," Miles said.

Sydney recorded 210 new local cases on Saturday, slightly down from the record number reached earlier in the week.

Police were out in force around the city, attempting to prevent anti-lockdown protesters from gathering after thousands poured through the streets and sparked violent clashes with officers last week.

With close to just 14 percent of the population fully vaccinated, authorities around the country continue to rely on lockdowns to reduce people's movements and slow the spread of the virus.

On Friday, the country's Prime Minister Scott Morrison outlined a long road out of restrictions, setting a target of 80 percent of the population to be fully vaccinated before the government would reopen borders and end lockdowns.

Australia's military will help enforce a lockdown in Sydney after the city of 6 million posted a record daily rise in COVID-19 cases on Thursday and state authorities said the outbreak was likely to get worse.

The lockdown of Australia's biggest city has increased pressure on Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who is now trailing in opinion polls, and heightened concern that Australia's A$2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) economy could slide into recession.

Despite an extended lockdown in Sydney since an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant, 239 new locally acquired coronavirus cases were recorded in the city over a 24-hour period, the biggest daily rise since the pandemic began.

"We can only assume that things are likely to get worse before they get better given the quantity of people infectious in the community," said Gladys Berejiklian, the premier of New South Wales state, of which Sydney is the capital.

Berejiklian said one new death took the toll from the latest outbreak to 13 and the national total was now 921.

With little sign that of restrictions reducing infections, Berejiklian said new curbs would be imposed on the southwestern and western areas of Sydney where the majority of COVID-19 cases are being found.

Residents there will be forced to wear masks outdoors and to stay within five km (three miles) of their homes.

With even tighter restrictions set to begin on Friday, New South Wales Police said it had asked for 300 military personnel to help enforce lockdown orders.

The personnel will deploy on Friday, Defence Minister Peter Dutton said, and will begin assisting police with ensuring compliance with restrictions next week.

Lockdown Extended

Berejiklian extended the Sydney lockdown by another month on Wednesday.

New South Wales accounts for over a third of Australia's economy. Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said he expected the national economy to shrink in the September quarter but the ability to avoid a technical recession would depend on whether New South Wales can avoid a longer lockdown.

"With respect to the December quarter, that does depend to a large extent how successful New South Wales, our largest state economy, is in getting on top of this virus," Frydenberg told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Berejiklian has said restrictions need to remain as too few people in Sydney are vaccinated amid tight supplies of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, with which Australia had hoped to inoculate everyone under 60 years old.

All adults in Sydney have been urged to seek an AstraZeneca vaccine. Some, citing rare blood clots, are reluctant and would prefer to wait several months when Australia is expected to receive additional Pfizer supplies.

Australia's National Gallery said on Thursday that it will return 14 artworks to India at least six of which are believed to have been stolen of illegally exported.

The artworks include sculptures, photographs and a scroll. The gallery has identified the works as either looted, stolen or of unknown origin.

The collection is composed largely of "religious and cultural artefacts" worth a total of about US$2.2 million, including some dating back to the 12th century.

Gallery director Nick Mitzevich told AFP the works were set to be returned to the Indian government within months.

"It's a relief that they can be returned to the Indian people, and it's a resolution for the National Gallery to close a very difficult chapter of our history," he said.

Thirteen of the artworks are connected to alleged trafficker Subhash Kapoor, a former art dealer in Manhattan who was subject of a massive US federal investigation known as Operation Hidden Idol. Kapoor is awaiting trial and he denies all charges.

The National Gallery of Australia has already returned several other works it acquired via Kapoor, including a US$5 million bronze statue of the Hindu god Shiva that had been stolen from a Tamil Nadu temple.

Mitzevich said it had introduced guidelines to assess any legal and ethical issues with works it holds, and was investigating three other sculptures from its Asia collection.

"It's very much a live issue with galleries around the world. And we want to make sure that we can resolve these issues in a timely manner," he said.

Many of the antiquities Kapoor dealt in dated back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when the Chola dynasty presided over a flourishing of Hindu art in Tamil Nadu.

Since his arrest in 2011, the United States has also returned hundreds of artefacts.

Mushfiqur Rahim's parents had contracted coronavirus and the Bangladesh cricketer has flown back home. Presently, Rahim has not been permitted reemergence into the air pocket.

Millions of Sydney residents will spend another month in lockdown, authorities announced Wednesday, citing a still-growing coronavirus outbreak and low vaccination rates.

Australia's biggest city had been due to exit lockdown on July 30 after five weeks but the restrictions will remain in place until August 28 as case numbers continued to climb.

"I appreciate personally what we're asking people do for the next four weeks but it is because we want to keep our community safe and want to make sure we can bounce back as quickly as possible," New South Wales state premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

Officials announced 177 new cases linked to the Sydney outbreak, which began mid-June when a driver for an international flight crew contracted the virus.

People living in hotspots have been urged not to leave their neighbourhoods, but those living alone will be allowed to create a "singles bubble" with another person.

Sydney lockdown extended by four weeks as virus outbreak grows

Much to the distress of the locals, Australia's New South Wales area might not lift restrictions to contain Covid infections anytime soon.

Residents have been under a strict lockdown for more than four weeks now, but the cases are still alarmingly increasing in the area. As per local reports, the lockdown might not be lifted until September.

"We know we've put in the hard yards for five weeks and we don't want to waste all the good work that we've done by opening too early and then having the virus spread again," state premier Gladys Berejiklian told a media conference.

Till now, the locals were hoping that the lockdown will be slightly relaxed by the start of the weekend. However, considering the increase of Covid cases and the low rate of vaccinated population, there is little chance of the lockdown curbs being relaxed.

As per local media reports, the local government will be announcing a four-week extension of the lockdown.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging locals to get vaccinated against coronavirus as soon as possible to help stop the spread of the virus, especially in the Delta variant.

Thousands took to the streets to protest against the lockdown in Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison condemned those involved in the anti-lockdown protest, saying the prospect of coming out of lockdown has been negatively impacted. 'It is selfish. It is self-defeating. It achieves no purpose,' he said. Premier Gladys Berejiklian also condemned the protests.

Meanwhile, Rio Olympic runner-up Chase Kalisz went one better to claim gold in the men's 400m individual medley for the United States. He led by a body length after 300 metres and came home strongly in 4mins 09.42secs ahead of second-placed compatriot Jay Litherland (4:10.28) and Australia's Brendon Smith (4:10.38) "It means the world. This is the last thing I really wanted to accomplish in my swimming career," said Kalisz, who made the most of defending champion Kosuke Hagino opting not to swim the event on home soil. "It was a dream of mine since as long as I can remember." Adam Peaty's drive to become the first British swimmer to successfully defend an Olympic title was ramped up a notch when he hit the wall in 57.63 to lead the men into the 100m breaststroke final on Monday. Dutchman Arno Kamminga was second quickest in 58.19.

The West Indies cruised to a four-wicket win with 12 overs remaining against Australia in Bridgetown on Saturday to claim the second one-day international (ODI) between the nations and level up the series.

Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder shared a 93-run partnership for the sixth wicket to effectively seal the win for the West Indies after the top of the order had struggled in the early chase of Australia's 187 total.

"It's pleasing to win," said West Indies captain Keiron Pollard.

"Obviously, when you start a cricket match you want to win, but to say I'm overall pleased with our performance throughout the entire game, I think we have some work to do."

Australia won the first ODI by 133 runs but set the West Indies a total of 188 to win after Australia's lower order batsman launched a salvage mission when the openers slumped.

Ben McDermott fell to the fourth ball of the day with one run on the scorecard and when Ashton Turner was bowled by Akeal Hosein the Australians had lost their sixth wicket for only 45 runs.

The lower order launched a comeback, however, with Matthew Wade and Adam Zampa hitting 36 runs each and No. 10 Wes Agar top scoring for the Australians with 41 from 36 balls.

The hosts struggled in the opening stages of their innings with Evin Lewis and Darren Bravo both falling early before Pooran and Holder came together to push the West Indies towards the win.

Holder eventually fell to Mitchell Starc 23 runs short of victory to leave Alzarri Jospeh to thump Ashton Turner for four to earn the West Indies a four-wicket win with 12 overs to spare.

The One-day International series between the West Indies and Australia will resume on July 25 (IST) following the suspension of the second match minutes before the start on July 23 due to a Covid-19 case.

A non-playing member of the West Indie squad had tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, following which Cricket West Indies (CWI) had put the teams, umpires and TV crew in hotel isolation.

CWI said in a statement on Saturday that, "all 152 persons tested for Covid-19 returned negative results, following the suspension of the second CG Insurance One-Day International (ODI) before a ball was bowled at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

"All members of the West Indies and Australia teams and coaching staff, as well as match officials, event staff and TV production crew were tested back at the hotel with everyone being in room isolation since."

Following the negative tests, CWI discussed the developments with the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), the Government of Barbados medical officials and Cricket Australia (CA) and a decision was made to resume the series.

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0.

CWI president Ricky Skerritt said on Saturday that, "We are happy to be able to announce the restart of the CG Insurance ODI series at Kensington Oval tomorrow. We want to thank our counterparts at CA for their co-operation in this matter as we look to get the games going again. Special thanks to our CEO Johnny Grave, Chairman of Cricket Australia, Earl Eddings, his CEO Nick Hockley along with our respective medical and operations teams. I appreciate the crucial role of the BCA and the Government of Barbados for working closely with CWI to ensure everything is in place for resuming the series.

"It has been a challenging two days and we have worked very swiftly and safely, following all the established medical protocols, to make sure that all necessary precautions are in place to ensure that we can go-ahead to resume play safely, tomorrow. We will continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly," added Skerritt.

Cricket: Suspended West Indies-Australia ODI series set to resume

Thousands of people took out anti-lockdown protests in Sydney on Saturday afternoon demanding an end to the city’s lockdown, which is entering its fifth week. The protests turned violent as protesters threw potted plants and water bottles at police offices.

Thousands marched through Australia's two biggest cities in anti-lockdown protests Saturday, sparking violent clashes with police in Sydney.

Dozens of protesters were arrested after an unauthorised march flouted public health orders in Sydney, while several confrontations with police broke out during the hours-long rally.

Officers were pelted with pot plants and bottles of water as opponents of Sydney's month-long stay-at-home order took to the streets in numbers.

Thousands also crowded several streets in Melbourne after gathering outside the state parliament in the early afternoon.

The largely maskless protesters were flouting rules on non-essential travel and public gatherings, a day after authorities suggested the restrictions could remain in place until October.

"I am utterly disgusted by the illegal protesters in the city today whose selfish actions have compromised the safety of all of us," the premier of Sydney's state of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, said in a statement.

"The protesters have shown utter contempt for their fellow citizens who are currently doing it tough."

Hundreds of police responded to the Sydney protest, with several demonstrators pulled from the crowd in handcuffs by officers. Police said they issued nearly 100 fines and arrested 57 people.

Police in Melbourne said six people were arrested.

New South Wales Police Minister David Elliott said a team of detectives would be scouring footage to identify and charge as many people as possible in the coming days.

"What we saw today in Sydney is unfortunately something that we've seen in cities that we all shake our head at," Elliott told media after the protest.

"It's quite clear that you know, Sydney isn't immune from morons as well."

He also said he expected the gathering to drive a spike in Covid-19 cases and urged all those who attended to get tested and isolate.

Organisers had dubbed the protest a "freedom" rally and publicised it on social media pages frequently used to spread vaccine disinformation and conspiracy theories.

Attendees carried signs and banners reading "Wake up Australia" and "Drain the Swamp" -- echoing messages seen in similar demonstrations overseas.

Helicopters buzzed above the streets of Sydney, a city of over five million people that is struggling to contain an outbreak of the Delta variant.

The state of New South Wales reported 163 new infections Saturday to bring its total in the current outbreak to nearly 2,000.

After escaping much of the early pandemic unscathed, around half of Australia's 25 million people are now in lockdown across several cities.

There is growing anger at the restrictions and the conservative government's failure to provide adequate vaccine supplies.

Just 11 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.
