After Australia faced their first defeat in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, team's assistant coach Ricky Ponting admitted that it was their batting which was not up to the mark.

"Our batting was just a little bit off again. We seemed to find the field a lot in the first 10 overs," Cricket.com.au quoted Ponting as saying.

Chasing a mammoth<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-shikhar-dhawan-shines-as-india-beat-holders-australia-by-36-runs-225791"> target of 353 runs set by India</a>, Australia skipper Aaron Finch, who opened the inning with David Warner, got run out in the 14th over after scoring 36 runs.

Ponting feels that Finch's run out happened at a really crucial time as the team had just started to get momentum.

"The run out happened at a really crucial time (the 14th over). The momentum had just started to turn there, Finchy had started to find the boundary a bit more frequently," he said.

India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan hammered a ton while the skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-had-a-point-to-prove-against-australia-says-virat-kohli-225792">Virat Kohli</a> also added 82 runs on the board to help their side post a big target for Australia.

Ponting stated that they also needed a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-shikhar-dhawan-ruled-out-for-three-weeks-due-to-injury-226202">Dhawan</a>-like inning in their top-order and that would have had put them in the game.

"We just needed someone at the top to go on and make a big hundred like Dhawan did and we would have been right in the game," Ponting said.

Despite all this, Ponting still has full faith in both the openers as he said,&nbsp;"Finch and Warner are probably as good as openers in the world. Finchy has turned things around really well in the last five or six months, Davey coming back has made runs. By his own admission today, (Warner) probably wasn't at his absolute best. He hit the field too often early on and wasn't able to rotate as he would have liked."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-steve-smiths-reaction-when-virat-kohli-stopped-indian-fans-from-booing-him-225897">Steve Smith</a> came out to bat before Usman Khawaja and Ponting backed this decision by saying that they wanted a right-hand, left-hand combination during India's perilous spin attack.

"We wanted to have (favourable) left-hand, right-hand (match-ups) with those spinners and we thought Steven plays spin as well as anybody, so that was the only reason. It happens quite a lot in the modern game where you see that right-hand, left-hand combination, especially if they've got a lot of spin," he said.

World Cup: 'Our batting was little bit off', says Ricky Ponting after Australia's defeat against India

Steve Waugh, former Australia captain compared India's Hardik Pandya with 1999 World Cup's man of the tournament, South African Lance Klusener.

Pandya played a crucial role in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-14-india-vs-australia-225643">India's 36-run victory over Australia</a>.

Sent to bat at number four, Pandya hit 48 runs off 27 balls, helping India post a total of 352 for 5.

"...It's the innings of Hardik Pandya that will send shivers down opposition spines. This guy might just be the equivalent of Lance Klusener in the 1999 World Cup. He has the ability to begin his innings like most finish, with clean hitting that no opposing captain can protect," Waugh wrote in his column for the ICC's official website.

The damaging stroke play by Pandya, who hit four fours and three sixes, reminded Waugh of Klusener's fireworks in the 1999 World Cup.&nbsp;

Klusener was player of the tournament 20 years ago in England for his destructive lower-order hitting that netted 281 runs at a strike rate of 122.17, a phenomenal tally in the pre-T20 days of 1999.

"When they (India) get off to solid opening partnership, as they did against Australia, they then have the luxury of seeing Virat Kohli orchestrate the remainder of the innings," Waugh wrote.

Praising veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni who hit a 14-ball 27, Waugh said, "The cunning and sheer brilliance of MS Dhoni rarely fails to deliver and again he timed his assault on Australia to post a 350 plus target. ''

Steve Waugh also lauded Indian skipper Virat Kohli for "calming down" the crowd which booed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-steve-smiths-reaction-when-virat-kohli-stopped-indian-fans-from-booing-him-225897">Steve Smith</a> in their World Cup clash in London, calling the gesture a "class act".

Waugh, one of the toughest and most successful captains of all time, said he was impressed by Kohli's action of asking the crowd to not boo Smith, who is continuing to cope the fans' ire after returning from a one-year ban for ball-tampering.

"Leadership reveals itself in many forms but I thought <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/booing-smith-not-acceptable-i-said-sorry-to-him-on-behalf-of-the-crowd-kohli-225807">Virat Kohli's gesture</a> in calming down the rough reception given to Steve Smith from the Indian spectators was a class act that calmed a volatile situation," Waugh, who led Australia to World Cup title in 1999, wrote for the ICC.

During the clash with India, which Australia lost by 36 runs, the Indian fans booed Smith and chanted "cheater, cheater" when the defending champions were fielding.&nbsp;

Kohli urged them to calm down and instead cheer his batting.

Waugh said India's 36-run victory in the high-pressure World Cup clash will provide them with enormous confidence as they move forward in this tournament.

World Cup: Net bowler hospitalised after getting hit on head by David Warner's shot during practice

Australia assistant coach Ricky Ponting is impressed with all-rounder Marcus Stoinis'&nbsp;ability to bowl overs at the death and expressed his confidence that the all-rounder can have a big impact on this World Cup.

"I just like the overall package with him. He's probably our best outfielder, you saw what he can do with the ball at the death, he gives us another string to our bow as far as his death bowling is concerned. The boys love what he brings to the side. I'm working with him a lot on a daily basis and I think he can have a big impact on this World Cup," Cricket.com.au quoted Ponting as saying.

Stoinis has displayed a brilliant form with the ball so far, as he took two wickets in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-record-breaking-mitchell-starc-becomes-fastest-to-150-odi-wickets-225244">Australia's </a>opening match against Afghanistan while giving away just 37 runs from his seven overs.

He continued his form in the second match as well.

Despite not being able to clinch a wicket, Stoinis conceded just 18 runs from his four overs against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/umpiring-decisions-sent-ripples-through-the-dressing-room-brathwaite-after-australia-defeat-225114">West Indies</a>.

However, Stoinis has unable to leave a mark on the field with his batting skills.

He has batted just once in this tournament so far and scored 19 runs.

Therefore, Ponting said he is working with Stoinis to improve his batting.

"If there's been a knock on his batting, it's been that he's been a bit of a shaky nervous starter and takes a lot of balls to get moving. (Against the West Indies) he didn't (look nervous) ... he was nice and sharp. He hit the ball nicely down the ground, he hit a really good pull shot early on. I had a chat to him just after he got out and he was pretty disappointed to get out the way he did. We've been doing a lot of work on that sort of stuff with his batting," he said.

Key battles in India vs Australia Cricket World Cup clash

The credit for Australia's 15-run victory against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/umpiring-decisions-sent-ripples-through-the-dressing-room-brathwaite-after-australia-defeat-225114">West Indies</a>, during their World Cup clash on Thursday, goes to pacer Mitchell Starc's record-breaking performance as he became the fastest bowler to reach the 150-wicket mark.

Starc achieved this milestone in his 77th ODI match, one match quicker than Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq.

He displayed an impeccable performance during the match as he clinched five wickets in the match to touch the 150-wicket milestone.

"I felt really good today (Thursday). Rhythm is starting to feel really good, and the things I've been working on the last few months are really coming to fruition, so that's a huge positive for me," Cricket.com.au quoted Starc as saying.

Interestingly, Starc, in his last two overs, conceded just two runs.

Talking on the same, Starc said he enjoys bowling death overs.

"It's something I enjoy doing, bowling at the death. Having that experience of four years ago (at the 2015 World Cup) probably helps play a part, but we've got guys that can bowl throughout an innings and bowl at the death," Starc said.

However, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australia-beat-west-indies-by-15-runs-in-world-cup-225096">Starc </a>was not the only one who broke a record, Nathan Coulter-Nile also got a record to his name after he smashed 92 runs, the highest ever score by an Australian batting at no 8 or lower in an ODI.

No clear favourite has emerged to win the World Cup this year because the first few games have shown that all 10 teams are capable of beating each other at the tournament, former Australia skipper Allan Border has said.

Only New Zealand, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australia-beat-west-indies-by-15-runs-in-world-cup-225096">Australia </a>and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/dhonikeeptheglove-twitter-welcomes-indian-cricket-boards-stand-on-dhoni-glove-row-225187">India </a>have not been beaten yet, with the latter two set to meet at the Oval on Sunday.

"There's no obvious runaway-looking team at the moment. All the sides are basically showing they can beat each other. That's the main thing that's come out of these early games," Border wrote in a column for the International Cricket Council.

"I think that is how most of us expected it to be at this point, that there would be a lot of teams you expect to do well and then there would be a few surprise packages," he said.

Pakistan pulled off arguably the biggest upset so far when they beat hosts and tournament favourites England on Monday, a day after Bangladesh sprung a surprise by defeating <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/no-regrets-south-africa-on-turning-down-ab-de-villiers-approach-224972">South Africa.</a>

Defending champions Australia beat Afghanistan comfortably in their first match but were pushed considerably harder in Thursday's 15-run victory over West Indies.

Border, who captained Australia to World Cup glory in 1987, said the team had room for improvement and would have a clearer idea of their chances after facing 2011 champions India.

"<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-kohli-says-picking-two-spinners-was-masterstroke-in-win-against-south-africa-224854">India </a>next up will be a big stumbling block. "It's always been a great rivalry between West Indies and Australia," Holder told reporters on Wednesday.

"I think everybody is expecting a really good contest. We're up for the challenge. I think they're up for the challenge as well. I'm not caught up with the rivalry. It's a matter for us to go into tomorrow's game looking to execute our plans and beat Australia," Holder said.

Both teams won their opening matches of the tournament, West Indies crushing Pakistan by seven wickets at Trent Bridge.

"We obviously had one game here before. We bowled 22 overs in the game. We didn't get a full allotment. But having said that, we've got a little bit of knowledge about the ground, how the wicket plays," Holder said.

Pakistan beat World Cup favourites and hosts England in their second match and Holder is not getting carried away.

"As I said, it's a wide-open tournament," he said. "All 10 teams are capable of lifting the World Cup. That's why we're here, they're the 10 best teams in the world.''

"So I wouldn't get into the games that have been played. I just want to keep moving forward. We've got Australia tomorrow, and that's our next hurdle, and that's what I want to focus on. It's just a matter of playing good cricket on any given day. We want to execute in all three departments. We just want to be as positive as we possibly can be. The intent is something that we spoke about in the dressing room," the Windies captain said.

"I think the beauty with both of those guys is they've played enough cricket," Holder said.

"We just tend to trust them, take their word and then make a final decision. Chris was at practice for the last couple of days, so Chris for me is all well and ready to go. Andre will be obviously assessed, and we're very, very hopeful that he'll be fit," Holder said.

World Cup: Windies captain jason Holder plays down Australia rivalry

Justin Langer has hailed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/steve-waugh-ranks-dangerous-windies-as-world-cups-most-watchable-side-224066">West Indies'</a> "Calypso cricket", admitting they were his heroes when he was growing up as he prepares Australia to face their current battery of fast bowlers.

The two teams, who have won seven out of the 11 World Cups so far between them, meet at Trent Bridge on Thursday after both cruised to comfortable opening victories.&nbsp;

Head coach Langer said defending champions Australia would need to adjust their mindset to take on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/i-am-a-fast-bowler-thunders-andre-russell-after-startling-pakistan-in-their-world-cup-opener-223332">West Indies quicks and other fast bowlers</a> at the tournament in England and Wales.

"We've probably spent four months thinking and playing against spin bowling," he said on Tuesday.

"We have to adapt to the West Indies no doubt, who have got a number of good, fast bowlers. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-south-african-pacer-dale-steyn-ruled-out-of-tournament-due-to-shoulder-injury-224247">South Africa</a> will be the same. England will be the same. Have to adapt our game plan and adapt pretty quickly.&nbsp;Obviously a very dangerous team the way they bat and aggressive bowling, but they've got weaknesses as well and we're playing pretty good cricket," said Langer.

West Indies, who won the first two World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, were the dominant force in the world game for two decades and boasted a succession of world-class fast bowlers and thrilling batsmen.

"When I was a kid it was Calypso cricket, and I think we're seeing plenty of signs of Calypso cricket," Langer said.&nbsp;

"Running and bowling fast. They're not necessarily going to be bowling the same spot every ball, but going to be exciting to watch. They all try to hit sixes most balls so Darren Bravo's probably a little bit more unorthodox.&nbsp;Always exciting playing the West Indies. When I was growing up they were my heroes," added Langer.

Langer described veteran opener Chris Gayle, who scored 50 in the West Indies' seven-wicket victory against Pakistan, as a "brilliant player".

"They got a number of dangerous players. With him&nbsp;on the team&nbsp;they seemed to grow a leg. They take confidence from him. Again, hopefully, don't take too much confidence on Thursday," he said.

Australia were on the end of a thumping last year when England posted a world record one-day international score of 481 for six at Trent Bridge and Langer described the experience as "brutal".

"Had some really good times here at Trent Bridge and last year was a down," he said.

Langer welcomed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2019-english-crowds-stupid-to-boo-david-warner-says-manager-224097">David Warner's</a> innings of 89 not out in Australia's win against Afghanistan, his first official international match since completing a one-year ban for ball tampering.

"You can see the look in his eyes. A lot of people are talking. Looks determined. For him to battle through 90 or 80, whatever it was, and to still be there at the end and get the job done for the team, that's a great sign for us," Langer said.

English crowds are "stupid" to jeer David Warner at the Cricket World Cup as it will only fire him up, the Australian batsman's manager James Erskine has said.

Warner, who has returned to the side following a 12-month ban for ball-tampering, was booed by the crowd during Australia's opening match against Afghanistan in Bristol but struck an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-david-warner-stars-in-australias-rout-of-afghanistan-223509">unbeaten 89 and was named man-of-the-match</a>.

"I am English. Where the Poms are stupid is that it is actually going to encourage him. It will actually help him. The fact of the matter is, you concentrate, he won't want to fail, he got 89," Erskine said in comments published by Fairfax Media.

"They will learn very smartly that they are dealing with someone who has got the powers of concentration and his willpower, it's no different from a Steve Waugh or a Nick Faldo. That's exactly what will happen here," he added.

While former captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australian-coach-justin-langer-coach-requests-crowd-not-to-boo-steve-smith-david-warner-223096">Steve Smith</a> and test opener Cameron Bancroft -&nbsp;the other players punished for ball-tampering - have given media interviews about the Cape Town scandal, Warner has declined to comment publicly.

He has dodged media interviews at the World Cup, barring a mandatory comment on-field with the host broadcaster after claiming the man-of-the-match award.

Erskine defended Warner's silence.

"There is no point talking. What's he going to talk about? I think that policy will work ... if he (Warner) goes and gets a ton against England or somebody like that, people will want to a chat to him about his play,''&nbsp;Erskine said.

"As I have said before, these guys (Warner and Smith) have taken a hit for a lot of other people and they paid their fine. They now basically have got to go out and play well and it looks as if they are going to play well," he added.

World Cup 2019: English crowds 'stupid' to boo David Warner, says manager

Australian opening batsman David Warner's participation in the team's opening <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-outplayed-but-not-downbeat-says-faf-du-plessis-222986">World Cup</a> match hangs in the balance as the player suffered from a sore glute in Australia's warm-up match against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-jofra-archers-impact-makes-england-an-even-tougher-force-223067">England</a> on May 25.

The left-handed batsman needs to be cleared by the medical staff to take part in the team's opening match against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Australs head coach Justin Langer said that the fitness test of Warner would be conducted on Friday as they don't want to make a decision on the match day.

"We'll have a pretty good idea today. But what I have expressed to him is it's really important to be fair to the other players, we don't want to be getting to Saturday morning and making a call, when a couple of other guys are wondering if they are going to play or not going to play," cricket.com.au quoted Langer as saying on Friday.

"The earlier we can make the decision, the better. Hopefully, we can make it tonight where he says 'yep, I'm ready to go', or 'I'm not sure'&nbsp;if he pulls up sore in the morning," he added.

Warner would come out to bat as an opener if he is able to prove his fitness.

If he is not fit enough to take part in the match, one of Usman Khawaja or Shaun Marsh will open the batting alongside skipper Aaron Finch.

Langer said that Warner is, however, 'desperate to play'&nbsp;in the match, but the team does not want to rush him.

"He's obviously desperate to play. Like all 15 players would, he is jumping out of his skin, his energy is up and he's laughing a lot, which is a really good sign," Langer said.

"But we've just got to make sure he can move, particularly in the field.

Batting seems okay, running in a straight line seems okay, but going side to side - we've just got to make sure we don't aggravate it," he added.

Australia won both their warm-up matches against England and Sri Lanka ahead of the World Cup.

Stoinis has been a regular member of the one-day international (ODI) squad for the past two years.

Hussey backed the form of Stoinis and hopes that he will return to form in the World Cup.

On the current form of Stoinis, Hussey said every player has had a time when they struggled with their form and returned to form real quick.

Hussey stated that Stoinis is a vital player, provides balance to the squad and fills the slot of the fifth bowler for the skipper Aaron Finch.

Khawaja, who only returned to the one-day side earlier this year after a two-year absence, has prospered upon his recall and scored 655 runs in 10 innings as an opener, well above his career average of 44.21.

Warner's return from a 12-month ban for ball tampering and his scintillating form in the Indian Premier League, where he was the top run scorer, has complicated the equation but Khawaja does not care where he bats.

"I do love opening, that's where I've batted my whole life in one-day cricket," Khawaja told reporters.

"(But) I wasn't thinking about securing an opening berth," he said of Monday's innings where he rotated the strike and kept the scoreboard ticking over.&nbsp;

"It's about winning games and doing the best for the team," he added.&nbsp;

Khawaja's innings -&nbsp;he hit only three boundaries in his 105-ball knock -&nbsp;was impressive given he had sustained a painful blow to the inside of his knee while fielding.

"It's sore," said Khawaja, who also had retired hurt against West Indies last week after being struck in the head by an Andre Russell bouncer.

"I was told to stay down but I thought I wasn't going to do that, so I tried to get up and my knee just collapsed underneath me. I iced it for about 25 minutes and (there is) nothing structurally wrong," he said.

Whatever lineup Langer chooses to send out against Afghanistan, Khawaja said the side were confident they could go on and secure Australia's sixth World Cup title after they have turned the side's fortunes around in the last three months.

They have won their last eight official one-day international matches, which includes series victories in India and the UAE against Pakistan.&nbsp;

Prior to the start of that winning run at Ranchi in early March, the team had lost 15 of their previous 18 ODIs and Khawaja said he knew which result he preferred.

"I know what it feels like when you're losing and I know what it's like when winning, it`s obvious which one you want," he said.

"Winning is a habit, we say that a lot among the team. We want to keep that going, we might have lost that before, but we might have found that again heading into the World Cup," Khawaja added.

Carlos Brathwaite sees himself as a versatile all-rounder, saying he is ready to perform whatever role is required in the ICC Men`s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/winner-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-to-earn-highest-prize-money-in-history-of-tournament-219380">Cricket World Cup</a>.

"When chosen, my skillset suits bowling very tight in the middle, offering some support at the death and then with the bat picking up the slack. If I need to come in the last three or four overs to give us a boost to the total then fine... or the odd game where I can come in and play a longer knock, so I think it`s about working on all facets of my game so my versatility makes me an asset that can be chosen at any point during the tournament," Cricket West Indies (CWI) quoted Brathwaite, as saying.

The tall right-hander batted well last week when he scored 60 off 64 balls with five fours and three sixes against Australia in an unofficial pre-tournament fixture at the Nursery Ground.

"It`s another challenge and whatever situation presents itself is for me to use my versatility again and to adapt to it. We may need another knock like against Australia or we may need a knock where they only have three overs and I`m supporting one of the batters that are in, so it`s another good challenge for the team and puts us one step closer to the ultimate goal which is winning the tournament," he continued.

West Indies won the World Cup on two occasions under the leadership of Clive Lloyd - the first edition in 1975 when they beat Australia and again in 1979 when they beat England. The tournament will be played in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14. West Indies open their campaign on May 31 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Defending champions Australia rode on Steve Smith`s century to beat England by 12 runs in a closely-fought World Cup warm-up match in Southampton on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 298 to win, England were bowled out for 285 in the final over but the tournament hosts will be more concerned about injuries than the result.

With<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-captain-eoin-morgan-to-have-x-ray-in-pre-world-cup-scare-221392"> captain Eoin Morgan</a> not playing due to a fractured finger, England had another scare when fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer sustained injuries.

Wood was troubled by his left foot and bowled only three overs before leaving the field for treatment while Archer injured himself while sliding to save a boundary before returning 30 minutes later.

"Mark Wood is to have a precautionary scan," the England Cricket Board said in a statement, as reported by ESPN.

"England`s medical team want to ensure there is nothing serious in the build-up to the start of the World Cup."

Smith hit eight fours and three sixes in his 116 off 102 balls before he was caught and bowled by Tom Curran in the final over.

"To get 300 was superb," Australian skipper Aaron Finch said. "Steve played an unbelievable knock."

England`s Liam Plunkett conceded 69 runs in his nine overs but picked up four wickets -- including top-order batsmen David Warner (43) and Shaun Marsh (30).

"The pitch was slower than some of the pitches we`ve played on before," England`s acting captain Jos Buttler said. "It was still a good wicket, but didn`t have the pace it normally has."

England`s top scorer was James Vince, who hit a patient 64 off 76 deliveries before he was caught by Nathan Lyon attempting to cut a short ball. Buttler chipped in with a quick-fire 52 off 31 balls which included three sixes.

A volcano erupted on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali, causing some overnight flight cancellations to and from Australia as an ash cloud rose into the sky, officials said on Saturday.

Mount Agung volcano spewed out lava and showers of rocks over a distance of about 3 km (2 miles), with ash falling over dozens of villages, officials said. There were no reports of casualties.

Flights, run by Qantas Airways, Jetstar and Virgin Airlines, were operating normally on Saturday.

Authorities had 50,000 masks available as a precaution though the alert level on the volcano remained unchanged and there had been no evacuations.

Australia's Usman Khawaja given all clear after head knock in World Cup warm-up game against Windies

The bowling side of Glenn Maxwell's status as an all-rounder is often forgotten amid the fireworks of his power hitting but the mercurial Australian hopes his offspin can tie a few batsmen in knots at the World Cup.

Although used sparingly during Australia's 2015 triumph on the pace-friendly pitches of home, Maxwell chipped in with six handy wickets to go with his 324 runs in a fine all-round tournament.

Spin is expected to play a far bigger role in England, particularly with warm weather forecast for the early summer, so Maxwell can see himself playing a bigger role behind specialist spinners Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa.

At England's compact cricket grounds, that will mean avoiding getting "hit for six most of the time," Maxwell said at training in Southampton.

"For me I suppose, a lot of the time that I bowl, I just try to limit the boundary balls," he added.

"As long as I'm doing that, if they hit some good shots off my bowling I'm not too fazed.

"If I'm limiting the boundary balls and giving myself the best chance to squeeze a few dot balls, bowl a couple of tight overs, it might create a bit of pressure at the other end."

Maxwell bowled plenty of overs in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan and away to India in recent months as Aaron Finch's side claimed confidence-building series victories.

He gave up the chance of a rich Indian Premier League deal to warm up for the World Cup with England county side Lancashire.

In six one-day matches with Lancashire, he managed a top score of only 35 with the bat but took wickets in every game bar one.

"To have that continue into my time at Lancashire, where I got plenty of time at the bowling crease, you get that rhythm, you get that feel of the ball coming out consistently," he said.

"You need that as a part-time bowler, to have that consistency of time at the crease and get a few of the cobwebs out, I suppose."

Australia's bowlers will have containment on their minds when they face West Indies and their master blasters in an unofficial warmup later on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl's Nursery ground, a field small even by English standards.

Maxwell likened the venue to Hurstville Oval, a club ground within a cycling track in Sydney's southern suburbs synonymous with big totals in domestic 50-over games.

"It's good to practice your skills under heightened pressure and what you're going to get later in the tournament," he said.

The bowling side of Glenn Maxwell's status as an all-rounder is often forgotten amid the fireworks of his power hitting but the mercurial Australian hopes his offspin can tie a few batsmen in knots at the World Cup.

"If I'm limiting the boundary balls and giving myself the best chance to squeeze a few dot balls, bowl a couple of tight overs, it might create a bit of pressure at the other end." Maxwell bowled plenty of overs in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan and away to India in recent months as Aaron Finch's side claimed confidence-building series victories. "You need that as a part-time bowler, to have that consistency of time at the crease and get a few of the cobwebs out, I suppose." <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/fear-of-change-negative-politics-wins-australia-election-219890">Australia's re-elected conservative government</a> might not meet a June deadline for tax breaks that policymakers had been counting on to give the slowing economy a much-needed boost, after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said parliament may be unable to convene in time.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in particular would have welcomed the fillip to consumer demand as it wrestles with whether to cut interest rates from already record lows.

If the tax breaks are delayed, maybe for months or even a full year, it would add to the case for at least one cut in the current 1.5% cash rate, perhaps as early as next month.

The tax rebates were a much-touted pledge from Morrison during the election campaign and may have played a part in his surprise defeat of the opposition Labor party.

Morrison's Liberal-National coalition had promised tax rebates to around 10 million middle- and low-income earners from July 1 worth up to A$1,080 per person.

It was to be paid once they lodged their tax returns for the financial year to the end of June.

However, to take effect the tax package has to be passed by lawmakers by the end of June and parliament cannot be recalled until the official writs from Saturday's election are returned.

That turns out to be an extensive process of vote checking which might not finish until late June, giving little time to pass the laws.

"We obviously have to wait for the writs to be returned and there's a formal process for that," Morrison told Sky News. "At the moment, that's not looking until very late into the back end of June."

"So, that really does make very narrow that opportunity to do it before 30 June," he added. "I think that's very unlikely, with the advice I've received."

Any delay to the rebates would be badly timed for the economy given that annual growth in the March quarter likely slowed to its lowest since the global financial crisis at under 2%.

The first-quarter growth numbers will be released on June 5, a day after the RBA holds its next policy meeting where a cut in rates is certain to be discussed.

Economists had estimated the tax breaks would inject about A$7.5 billion ($5.18 billion) into the economy over 2019/20, lessening the need for a reduction in interest rates.

News brief: Big stories of the day

Australia wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey stated that his team will focus on playing on their strengths rather than changing their game plans according to the oppositions in the upcoming International Cricket Council <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Cricket+World+Cup">(ICC) Men's Cricket World Cup.</a>

"We have got a certain game style which has been successful in the last eight games, against quality opposition. For us, it is playing to our strengths. Every team in the World Cup has got their strengths. We aren't too much about opposition's game style. That's where we get distracted from what we are really good at," ICC quoted Carey, as saying.

"So for us, it's building on our success in the last few months. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ex-coach-darren-lehmann-expects-steve-smith-and-david-warner-to-shine-for-australia-in-world-cup-218723">David (Warner)&nbsp;and Steve (Smith)</a>&nbsp;comes back in. Other than having 'exciting players', Carey feels confident going in the premier tournament along with the former World Cup winners, Ricky Ponting (Assistant coach) and Brad Haddin (fielding coach), who will be in their support staff.

"We've got a lot of knowledge. Brad Haddin played in the last World Cup, we've got Ricky Ponting coming in, we've got a number of players who played in that last World Cup," he said.

"We've got lots of knowledge around the group of guys to access. When we get into it, that's when the high-pressure (experience)&nbsp;comes into it," Carey added.

Austria's coalition government teetered on the brink of collapse on Saturday after video footage published by German newspapers apparently showed Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache discussing state contracts with a potential Russian backer in return for political support.

Senior figures in the government - a coalition of Sebastian Kurz's conservatives and Strache's far-right Freedom Party - held a crisis meeting on Friday night.

Kurz, who has distanced himself from the far right to protect his image when lesser scandals have emerged, was due to make a statement later on Saturday. The opposition called for Strache to resign.

Even for a party used to controversy, this one appeared too big for it or the government to sit out.

"This is huge. This has to be the end of Heinz-Christian Strache," political analyst Thomas Hofer said, adding that it was unclear whether Strache's stepping down or a snap election was more likely.

The video was reported on Friday evening by two of neighbouring Germany's leading media - weekly Der Spiegel and newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung - purportedly showing a meeting in Ibiza between Strache, another party official and a woman purporting to be the niece of a Russian oligarch.

The newspaper reports also said the video appeared to be a sting operation.

The footage, recorded in July 2017 - months before the election that brought this government to power - showed Strache talking to the woman.

In it, he appeared to offer to direct inflated construction contracts to a company in exchange for support for his party, though he also said he wanted everything to be done legally.

Strache did not reply to a request for comment. Reuters was not able to verify the authenticity of the footage independently, and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/german-police-start-autopsies-in-mystery-crossbow-deaths-218353">German</a> newspapers did not say how they obtained it.

Strache has headed the party since 2005, bringing it back to mainstream electoral success not seen since it was led by the charismatic Joerg Haider. It secured 26 per cent of the vote in 2017's parliamentary election.

The video is also a headache for Kurz, whose party is still leading in opinion polls but far short of a majority. The only other party with enough seats for a majority is the Social Democrats, with which Kurz, an immigration hard-liner, has difficult relations.

The Freedom Party (FPO) co-chairman, Christian Hafenecker, said the party's lawyers were evaluating the material.

Neither Strache nor the FPO ever received or granted any benefits from the persons concerned, Hafenecker said in a statement.

"Since the video was obviously recorded illegally, we are also preparing appropriate legal steps."

Vienna prosecutors said they would study the reports and decide whether there was sufficient cause to open an investigation, a spokeswoman for the prosecutors said.

"The FPO is finished," ran the headline in the tabloid Kronen Zeitung, which featured in the video since the woman said the oligarch wanted to buy a stake.

It remains unclear who was behind the recording.

Austrian government teeters after video of far-right leader

Australians go to the polls on Saturday in a contest to determine whether conservative<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/australias-pm-launches-official-campaign-six-days-out-from-election-218014"> Prime Minister Scott Morrison</a> can maintain his shaky grip on power or whether the centre-left Labor party will return to office after six years in opposition.

Opinion polls show Morrison trailing Labor as voters turn on his coalition government after six years of tumultuous rule that has seen two leaders ousted while in office, although polls narrowed during the campaign.

The winner will need to claim at least 76 seats in the 151-seat lower House of Representatives.

Below are several prominent contests.

FORMER PM BATTLES MODERATE REVOLT

Former prime minister Tony Abbott is struggling to retain the affluent seat in Sydney he has held for 25 years. Polls show Abbott is in a close battle with independent Zali Steggall, a former Olympian turned lawyer who has won support with her calls for more action on climate change.

Abbott, who previously called on Australia to abandon its pledge to reduce greenhouse emissions, is widely seen as instrumental in the ousting of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull last year.

He is one of a handful of prominent conservatives under pressure in traditional blue-ribbon seats. Analysts say a Labor victory is likely at a national level should he lose his seat.

VICTORIAN WOES

Conservative lawmakers are not the only ones under pressure. Socially moderate Treasurer Josh Frydenberg faces a stiff challenge from an independent, while Health Minister Greg Hunt also faces an uphill battle in southern Victoria state.

Both are struggling amid a wave of frustration in Victoria, home to Australia`s second-largest city, Melbourne.

The opposition Liberal party suffered a heavy defeat to the Labor government in state elections in November, a result seen as a rejection of conservative policies.

RURAL DISCONTENT

Climate change is also pressuring the Nationals, the rural-focused junior partner in the federal Liberal-National coalition government. With a drought wilting crops across Australia`s east, the Nationals have come under pressure over their support of Australia`s coal industry, a major contributor to greenhouse emissions.

This is expected to play out most acutely in Victoria and the western regions of New South Wales state.

Mallee in rural Victoria has long been considered one of the safest coalition seats but several independents are pushing the Nationals after incumbent Andrew Broad was forced to resign over a scandal.

QUEENSLAND APPEAL

While Morrison`s conservative politics may not be popular in some metropolitan areas of Australia, they are expected to resonate in the northeastern state of Queensland.

Rural voters in Queensland are a critical bloc in several marginal seats. Morrison`s coalition will need to carry seats such as Herbert in Queensland`s north if it is to retain power.

Labor`s Cathy O`Toole won Herbert in 2016 by just 37 votes and, with the coal industry a major employer in the electorate, Morrison`s candidate could win a seat away from the opposition.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE RIGHT?

Whoever wins power faces an anxious few weeks to determine the composition of the upper house Senate, where 76 seats will be contested.

Morrison`s legislative agenda was hampered throughout his short tenure by a hostile Senate, where independents held the balance of power.

Several right-wing candidates are trying to win Senate seats. The nationalist One Nation Party was once the dominant player in a crowded field but its standing has fallen amid a series of scandals.

However, voter frustration with the major parties remains and other right-wing parties are scrambling to step in.

Australia's election: Key themes and contests

Australia`s political parties are in the final stages of campaigning ahead of a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/australias-election-key-themes-and-contests-219317">general election on Saturday</a>.

Polls indicate a close result following a campaign centred around tax cuts, climate change and social programmes, with the opposition Labor party likely to win office from the conservative Liberal-National coalition.&nbsp;

Below are party major policies taken mainly from campaign programmes and pre-election announcements:

TAXATION

Liberal-National coalition

- Proposed total tax cuts of A$158 billion ($109 billion)over the period to 2029/30, in addition to A$144 billion in tax cuts passed by parliament last year. Most of the new tax cuts would take effect after 2022 when the next election is due.

- Most of the early personal income tax cuts would benefit low and middle-income earners. Tax rebate for middle-income earners to double in the current financial year. Subsequent tax concessions would benefit wealthier Australians.&nbsp;

- Top threshold for the 19 per cent tax bracket rises to A$45,000 in 2022/23 from A$41,000 currently. From 2024/25, the 32.5 per cent marginal tax rate would be reduced to 30 per cent, and apply to income between A$45,000 and A$200,000.

Labor

- Will match the coalition`s planned tax cuts for workers earning between A$48,000-A$126,000 a year, but also pledged a bigger rebate for people earning less than A$45,000.

- No changes to current tax brackets. Unspecified tax cuts when tax receipts hit 24.3 per cent of GDP.

- To remove concessions used primarily by older Australians to obtain tax rebates for dividends paid out from after-tax corporate profit.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Liberal-National coalition

- Committed to the Paris Accord that requires member states to reduce emissions by 26% from 2005 levels, but some in the coalition question the need for that and many remain staunchly in favour of coal-fired power.&nbsp;

- No specific target for how much electricity must be generated by renewables.

Labor

- Plans to go further than the Paris agreement, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero pollution by 2050.&nbsp;

- Aims for 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

HEALTHCARE AND WELFARE

Liberal-National coalition

- Proposed to spend more than A$80 billion on the public healthcare system in 2019/20.

- Access to cheaper medicines for cancer patients.&nbsp;

- Proposed A$725 million investment in residential care for elderly Australians.

Labor

- Promises to outspend coalition on healthcare, including more than A$2 billion to expand free cancer treatment.

- Increase financial rebate given to Australians when they pay to see a doctor. Promises A$1,000 of free dental work over a two year period for pensioners.

- To increase the minimum wage, but has not given specific details. Also pledges to raise pay for people who work on weekends and public holidays.

HOUSING

Liberal-National coalition

- Proposes A$500 million to underwrite home loan deposits for 10,000 first-home buyers, who do not have a 20% deposit that most banks require.

Labor

- Promised to match the coalition`s first-home buyer policy.

- To remove tax concessions that allow investors to offset financial losses from investment properties against their incomes.

FOREIGN AID

Liberal-National coalition

- The coalition in April trimmed foreign aid from its 2019/20 budget to be worth A$4.04 billion.

- It will remain largely unchanged until 2023.

- Promises to direct much of the aid budget to the Pacific amid rising competition for influence from China.

Labor

- Plans to spend A$1.6 billion more than the coalition over the next four years.

REFUGEES

Liberal-National coalition

- Plans to reverse a law that allows doctors to approve transfers of refugees held on remote Pacific island detention centres to Australia if they need medical care.

- Controversial indefinite detention of refugees who arrive in Australia by boat to remain.&nbsp;
