Brent crude futures were up 23 cents at $63.62 per barrel at 0922 GMT, equivalent to a weekly rise of around 1.8%. They fell 6% last week.

US West Texas Intermediate crude was 25 cents higher at $56.27 a barrel, a weekly gain of 1.1%. It fell to 7.5% last week.

Tensions remained high around the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil passageway, as Iran refused to release a British-flagged tanker it seized last week in the Gulf.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington had asked Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, Australia, and other nations to join a maritime security initiative in the Middle East so oil and other products can flow through the strait.

However, oil prices' reaction to the strains in the Gulf has been relatively muted. "It appears that the majority of market participants do not expect a military conflict that would hamper oil shipments," Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch said.

Prices also drew support from a crude inventory draw in the United States, but gains were limited as the fall appeared to have been largely anticipated. The US production in the Gulf of Mexico was still feeling the effects of Hurricane Barry.

"Several indicators pointing to a slowdown of global oil demand growth appear to have taken over market sentiment," Jefferies analyst Jason Gammel said.

Reuters polls taken July 1-24 showed the growth outlook for nearly 90% of the more than 45 economies surveyed was downgraded or left unchanged. That applied not just to this year but also in 2020.

"Growing challenges in the macroeconomic environment have kept bullish bets in check as risk appetites remain soft over potential weakness in global fuel demand," said Benjamin Lu, commodities analyst at Singapore-based Phillip Futures.

The slowdown in global manufacturing and trade, and the associated hit to oil consumption, largely stems from a US-China trade war that has rumbled on over the last year.

Trade talks between the two countries broke down in May after nearing an agreement. Next week, the top US and Chinese negotiators meet for the first time since then. Any positive outcome of the meeting is expected to boost oil prices.

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the $5 billion fine slapped on Facebook in the United States this month for privacy breaches showed regulators were now taking such issues extremely seriously.

"These companies are among the most powerful and valuable in the world," Frydenberg told reporters in Sydney after the release of a much-anticipated report on future regulation of the dominant digital platforms.

"They need to be held to account and their activities need to be more transparent."

Canberra would form a special branch of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the antitrust watchdog, to scrutinise how the companies used algorithms to match advertisements with viewers, giving them a stronghold on the main income generator of media operators.

The new office was one of 23 recommendations in the ACCC's report, including strengthening privacy laws, protections for the news media and a code of conduct requiring regulatory approval to govern how internet giants profit from users' content.

Frydenberg said the government intended to "lift the veil" on the closely guarded algorithms the firms use to collect and monetise users' data, and accepted the ACCC's "overriding conclusion that there is a need for reform".

The proposals would be subject to a 12-week public consultation process before the government acts on the report, he added.

Google and Facebook have opposed tighter regulation while traditional media owners, including Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, have backed reform.

News Corp's local executive chairman, Michael Miller, welcomed the "strength of the language and the identification of the problems", and said the publisher would work with the government to ensure "real change".

Facebook and Google said they would engage with the government during the consultation process, but had no comment on the specific recommendations.

The firms have previously rejected the need for tighter regulation and said the ACCC had underestimated the level of competition for online advertising.

ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said the regulator had five investigations of the two companies underway, and "I believe more will follow".

He said he was shocked at the amount of personal data the firms collected, often without users' knowledge.

"There needs to be a lot more transparency and oversight of Google and Facebook and their operations and practices," he said.

Among other recommendations in the report, the ACCC said it wanted privacy law updated to give people the right to erase personal data stored online, aligning Australia with some elements of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation.

"We cannot leave these issues to be dealt with by commercial entities with substantial reach and market power. It's really up to government and regulators to get up to date and stay up to date in relation to all these issues," Sims said.

While the regulator did not recommend breaking up the tech giants, Sims also did not rule it out.

"If it turns out that ... divestiture is a better approach, then that can always be recommended down the track," he said.

Veteran Sri Lankan star Lasith Malinga said Thursday he was "very happy" to make way for younger players as he calls time on his illustrious 15-year career in the 50-over format.

Malinga will play his final one-day international in Colombo Friday in the first of three ODIs against Bangladesh but hopes to continue playing in the shorter T20 format.

"I am very happy to leave at this time. This is an opportunity for new players to prove themselves and prepare for the next World Cup," Malinga, 35, told reporters Thursday at the team's final training session.

"We may have had some setbacks, but we have the capability to win another World Cup," he added, pointing to <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/india-news/sri-lanka-approves-visa-on-arrival-scheme-for-india-from-august-1-238312&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwit9dO878_jAhULHo8KHWkoDFUQFjAAegQIBBAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw3SU9HIyxcB8NKTaHNUm8NL">Sri Lanka</a>'s success at the 1996 World Cup and 2014 T20 World Cup.

Malinga - known for his trademark blond-highlighted mop and piercings - called on cricket administrators to be patient with up-and-coming stars and let them develop ahead of the next ODI World Cup.

"The young players need to believe that they can deliver. They need to be dedicated and develop to a level that they can decide for themselves when they go to the middle," Malinga said.

Two days ago, Malinga posted a video message on his wife's Facebook page saying he felt no ill will towards officials and players who may have tried to push him out of the ODI team.

He said he was sidelined by selectors two years ago but was able to prove his value at the recent World Cup, where he took four for 43 in Sri Lanka's group-stage win over eventual champions England.

Malinga has his sights on next year's T20 World Cup in Australia, and Sri Lanka's cricket board confirmed he would be available for selection for the T20 squad.

Malinga is leaving as Sri Lanka's third-highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket with 335 wickets in 219 innings so far since his first ODI against the United Arab Emirates in 2014.

Only Muttiah Muralitharan (523) and Chaminda Vaas (399) have taken more wickets than Malinga in ODIs for Sri Lanka.

Australia retained the women's Ashes after the only Test match in the series played across multiple formats ended in a draw at Taunton on Sunday.

After Australia had declared their first innings on 420-8, England avoided the follow-on and asked Australia to bat again, declaring at 275-9.

However, the visitors elected not to set a victory target and had reached 230-7 at the end of play.

Elysse Perry was again the pick of the Australian batters, following up her first innings 116 with an unbeaten 76 in the second.

The result means Ashes holders Australia, who lead England 8-2 on points having won all three of the One-Day Internationals, will retain the trophy.

England can only level the series if they win the three remaining Twenty20 international games, starting on Friday.

"It's certainly a good position to be in. We had a hard four-day battle and it was a good challenge. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a result here, but it was a great Test," Australia skipper Meg Lanning said.

"It's been a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests, and we're really looking forward to the T20s."

A points system to determine the winner of a series has been used in women's cricket since the 2013 Ashes. Teams are awarded two points for victory in limited-overs games and six in Tests.

Drawn limited-overs games result in one point being awarded to both teams and two each if a Test ends in a stalemate.

What happens when you are hailed to skies and then brought down to the earth? this is exactly what Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand went through in Australia.

Ardern's Australia visit: Hailed to skies, brought down to the earth!

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/new-zealand-pm-jacinda-ardern-utterly-disagrees-with-trump-tweets-on-congresswomen-236470">New Zealand Prime Minister&nbsp;Jacinda&nbsp;Ardern</a> was forced to fly home on a commercial flight on Friday after a technical snag hit her air force the plane, following a two-day trip to Australia, where she spoke of the need to boost regional cooperation.

New Zealand media said Ardern was returning on a commercial flight, and the country's defence force said her aircraft had suffered a failure of its air data computer during pre-flight checks, affecting the flight management system.

"A replacement part is being flown to Australia and it is expected the repair will be made tomorrow," the defence force added in Friday's statement to the Australian Associated Press.

New Zealand does not have a dedicated aircraft such as the US&nbsp;presidential Air Force One for its leaders, and the experience was not the first for one of its prime ministers.

In 2016, Prime Minister John Key had to delay a visit to India after his plane broke down on a refuelling stop in the north of Australia.

On her visit, Ardern raised the issue of Australia deporting criminals with a New Zealand background, particularly those brought up in Australia with no connection to New Zealand.

"He knows that I consider it to be corrosive to the relationship," she said, referring to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

"I just think we can't take our friendship for granted," she added.

There were no plans to change the policy, an Australian government spokesman told the agency, although Morrison did not directly address the topic.

Ardern also spoke about the need for both countries to together pay more attention to "issues" in the Pacific region, without elaborating.

Australia, in particular, has been vying for influence with China in sparsely populated Pacific island countries that control vast swathes of resource-rich oceans.

New Zealand does not have a dedicated aircraft such as the US presidential Air Force One for its leaders, and the experience was not the first for one of its prime ministers.

World Cup winner Joe Root thanks countrymen for unbelievable support

England's Cricket World Cup triumph can be the perfect launch pad to complete a memorable double by winning the Ashes series against Australia this year, test skipper Joe Root has said.

Hosts <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/england-mistakenly-awarded-extra-run-in-world-cup-final-ex-umpire-simon-taufel-236235">England </a>ended a 44-year wait to win the World Cup as they beat New Zealand side on boundary count after a tied Super Over in a dramatic final on Sunday.

Shifting focus to the five-match Ashes series, which begins on Aug. 1, the 28-year-old said England were full of confidence as they bid to reclaim the urn having already achieved one of their targets.

"It's what we set out to do two or three years ago and we're halfway there," Root told reporters.

"This will give the guys confidence and we've talked about taking that forward into a series like that," Root said.

"The way we played against Australia in that semi-final... the guys who were involved relished it and will want a bit more,&nbsp;the feeling of euphoria we felt at that ground," Root added.

"To potentially be able to experience all that again is very exciting. Ashes cricket always has a different edge to it so that in itself will get everyone going.''

"The atmosphere, the way it builds up and the way the guys get excited about it, it's like no other series in test cricket," Root said.

However, England must ensure their ODI success does not affect preparations, all-rounder <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-final-jofra-archer-reveals-ben-stokes-pre-super-over-advice-236203">Ben Stokes</a> said.

"Everyone here deserves to feel like a champion because we've just won it, but when it comes to the Ashes it's going to be heads on again because it has to be," Stokes said.

"Whether you're winning or losing, you've just got to wipe the slate clean," added Stokes.

A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northwest Australia Sunday, shaking buildings over a wide area but causing no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The shallow quake hit early Sunday afternoon 10 kilometres under the Indian Ocean 203 kilometres (126 miles) west of the West Australian beach resort of Broome, the US Geological Survey said. No tsunami alert was issued.

Sergeant Neil Gordon of the Broome police department said the quake rattled the city for more than a minute.

"The building here was shaking for about a minute and a half ... a steady shaking for that period of time," he told AFP by telephone.

He added that there had been "no reports of any injuries or any damage throughout the district," following the tremor.

The national broadcaster ABC said there were some reports of minor damage from the quake, and no injuries.

Australian media said the tremor was felt across a long stretch of the northwestern coast of Australia, from the West Australian capital of Perth and the mining centres of Karatha and Port Hedland to the south and as far as Darwin to the north.&nbsp;

Sachin Tendulkar may have unwittingly provided New Zealand with extra motivation to cause a huge upset in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-overcast-clouds-rain-expected-at-manchester-ahead-of-india-vs-new-zealand-semi-final-234185">Tuesday's World Cup semi-final</a> against India when he wished <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/a-look-back-at-seven-match-winning-knocks-by-mahendra-singh-dhoni-233604">MS Dhoni</a> happy birthday and "all the very best for the next two games".

The implication of the retired batting great's remarks was that India wicketkeeper Dhoni, who turned 38 on Sunday, and his team-mates already have one foot in the July 14 final against England or Australia at Lord's.

India, whose group match against 2015 runners-up New Zealand was washed out, have suffered just one defeat at this World Cup so far, against England, and topped the 10-team group table.

Opener Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to score five centuries in a single World Cup when he made 103 in a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Saturday, while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been the spearhead of a well-balanced bowling attack.

India captain Virat Kohli said Monday the pressure of being overwhelming favourites was nothing new for a squad who have long shouldered the hopes of a nation of more than a billion.

And he suggested that might give them an edge over the Black Caps at Old Trafford.

"The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-semi-final-india-vs-new-zealand-head-to-head-records-234123">Indian team</a> always carries a lot of expectation and pressure whenever we play," Kohli told reporters.

"We are quite used to that over the years. We are better equipped to react in these situations because we know what these kind of games and our fan base and the expectations bring," added Kohli.

But if New Zealand, who could recall spinner Ish Sodhi to an attack featuring left-arm quick Trent Boult and fit-again fast bowler Lockie Ferguson - can find a way through India's top three, they could expose a long tail.

The Black Caps, who only qualified for the semi-finals in fourth place on the basis of net run-rate, have lost their last three games - against Pakistan, holders Australia and England.

They now have the additional incentive of proving to Tendulkar that his prediction of an India appearance in the final was premature.

Equal opportunity

"We definitely deserve to be here," New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said at his pre-match press conference.

"Although we've qualified fourth we've got as equal an opportunity as anybody else."

Batting first has become an increasingly successful tactic at the World Cup in general and at Old Trafford in particular. In all five previous games on the ground, the team batting first has won.&nbsp;

But <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/heres-the-fab-four-cricket-world-cup-2019-234111">Kohli </a>said,&nbsp;"It comes back to the same point -&nbsp;handling pressure. You make two bad decisions when you are chasing and the game goes too far away from you to pull it back.''

"We are not worried about the toss. You have to be prepared both ways. We can't say if we lose the toss we have no hope. We should believe enough in ourself as a side to overcome any situation."

Williamson has been in fine form, making match-winning hundreds against South Africa and the West Indies.

But his 481 tournament runs represent nearly 29 percent of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-know-what-will-happen-if-india-vs-new-zealand-match-gets-abandoned-234101">New Zealand</a>'s total.

"Kane has stood up brilliantly for us," said Black Caps coach Gary Stead. "I don't think we'll be doing anything drastic, we just know we have to be better in that area than what we have been so far."

India may have the look of cricket thoroughbreds but Ferguson said of New Zealand,&nbsp;"As a team we definitely want to be the scrappers, guys that scrap for wins and not always do we win pretty."

And he suggested that might give them an edge over the Black Caps at Old Trafford. "The Indian team always carries a lot of expectation and pressure whenever we play," Kohli told reporters. Watch : Indian skipper Virat Kohli's press conference ahead of New Zealand clash × Equal opportunity "We definitely deserve to be here," New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said at his pre-match press conference. "Although we've qualified fourth we've got as equal an opportunity as anybody else." Batting first has become an increasingly successful tactic at the World Cup in general and at Old Trafford in particular. In all five previous games on the ground, the team batting first has won. But Kohli said, "It comes back to the same point - handling pressure. You make two bad decisions when you are chasing and the game goes too far away from you to pull it back.'' "We are not worried about the toss. You have to be prepared both ways. We can't say if we lose the toss we have no hope. We should believe enough in ourself as a side to overcome any situation." Williamson has been in fine form, making match-winning hundreds against South Africa and the West Indies. But his 481 tournament runs represent nearly 29 percent of New Zealand's total. "Kane has stood up brilliantly for us," said Black Caps coach Gary Stead. "I don't think we'll be doing anything drastic, we just know we have to be better in that area than what we have been so far." India may have the look of cricket thoroughbreds but Ferguson said of New Zealand, "As a team we definitely want to be the scrappers, guys that scrap for wins and not always do we win pretty."

A recent study has suggested that the process of reforestation around the world would be the most effective method to combat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/tornado-hits-northeast-china-as-more-extreme-weather-strikes-six-killed-190-injured-232916">climate change</a>.

Around 0.9 billion hectares of land worldwide would be suitable for reforestation, which could ultimately capture two-thirds of human-made carbon emissions.

Researchers investigated nature-based solutions to climate change. In the latest study published in the journal 'Science', researchers for the first time, showed where in the world new trees could grow and how much carbon they would store.

"One aspect was of particular importance to us as we did the calculations, we excluded cities or agricultural areas from the total restoration potential as these areas are needed for human life," study lead author Jean-Francois Bastin explained.

The researchers calculated that under the current climate conditions, Earth's land could support 4.4 billion hectares of continuous tree cover. That is 1.6 billion more than the currently existing 2.8 billion hectares.

Of these 1.6 billion hectares, 0.9 billion hectares fulfil the criterion of not being used by humans. This means that there is currently an area of the size of the US available for tree restoration.

Once mature, these new forests could store 205 billion tonnes of carbon,&nbsp;about two-thirds of the 300 billion tonnes of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity since the Industrial Revolution.

"We all knew that restoring forests could play a part in tackling climate change, but we didn't really know how big the impact would be. Our study shows clearly that forest restoration is the best climate change solution available today. But we must act quickly, as new forests will take decades to mature and achieve their full potential as a source of natural carbon storage," said co-author of the study, Prof. Thomas Crowther.

The study also shows which parts of the world are most suited to forest restoration.

The greatest potential can be found in just six countries:

Russia (151 million hectares)&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/why-china-is-afraid-of-us-abrams-tanks-to-be-delivered-to-taiwan-234260#us-army-infantry-battalions-m1-abrams-tanks-234232">US</a> (103 million hectares)

Canada (78.4 million hectares)

Australia (58 million hectares)

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/lionel-messi-slams-brazil-fix-after-copa-red-card-233729/amp">Brazil</a> (49.7 million hectares)

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/sale-of-weapons-to-taiwan-violates-one-china-policy-cancel-it-immediately-china-to-us-234236">China</a> (40.2 million hectares).

Many current climate models are wrong in expecting climate change to increase global tree cover, the study warns. It finds that there is likely to be an increase in the area of northern boreal forests in regions such as Siberia, but tree cover there averages only 30 to 40 per cent.&nbsp;

These gains would be outweighed by the losses suffered in dense tropical forests, which typically have 90 to 100 per cent tree cover.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/g20-to-tackle-ocean-plastic-waste-as-petrochemical-producers-expand-in-asia-226838">Indonesia</a> said Tuesday it would send more than <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/indonesia-returns-five-containers-of-waste-to-the-us-227333">210 tonnes of garbage</a> back to Australia, as Southeast Asian nations push back against serving as dumping grounds for foreign trash.

The eight containers seized in Surabaya city should have contained only waste paper, but authorities also found hazardous material and household trash including plastic bottles and packaging, used diapers, electronic waste and cans, a spokesman for the East Java customs agency told AFP.

Following the inspection the Indonesian environment ministry recommended "the items be re-exported," the agency said in a separate statement Monday.&nbsp;

"This is done to protect the public and Indonesian environment, especially in East Java, from B3 waste," it added, referring to hazardous and toxic materials.

Australian company Oceanic Multitrading sent the waste to Indonesia with help from Indonesian firm PT. MDI, authorities said.

China's decision in 2018 to ban imports of foreign plastic waste threw global recycling into chaos, leaving developed nations struggling to find places to send their waste.

Huge quantities of rubbish have since been redirected to Southeast Asia, but opposition to handling exported trash is growing in the region.

Indonesia announced last week it was sending back 49 containers full of waste to France and other developed nations.

In May, neighbouring Malaysia announced it was shipping 450 tonnes of imported plastic waste back to its sources, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

The Philippines, meanwhile, returned about 69 containers of rubbish to Canada last month, putting an end to a diplomatic row between the two countries.

Global concern over plastic pollution has been spurred by shocking images of waste-clogged rivers in Southeast Asia and accounts of dead sea creatures found with kilos of refuse in their stomachs.

Around 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, according to the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), with much of it ending up in landfills or polluting the seas, in what has become a growing international crisis.

Indonesia to send 210 tonnes of waste back to Australia

Australia will play England in the World Cup semi-finals after the holders suffered a dramatic 10-run defeat against South Africa at Old Trafford on Saturday.&nbsp;

David Warner marked his first match against South Africa since a 12-month ball-tampering ban with his third hundred of the World Cup, but it was not enough to prevent Australia suffering their second loss of the 10-team group stage.&nbsp;

Defeat on the penultimate ball meant Australia, who had already qualified for the semi-finals, failed to clinch top spot as India leapfrogged them to take pole position after beating Sri Lanka earlier on Saturday.

Had Australia won, they would have faced fourth-placed New Zealand in the first semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

But instead they will play resurgent hosts England in the second semi-final at Edgbaston on Thursday.

The final is at Lord's a week on Sunday.&nbsp;

Warner (122) and Alex Carey (85) got Australia to within sight of a stiff target of 326 during a fifth-wicket partnership of 108.

But neither could see their side home to victory after South Africa captain Faf du Plessis made 100 and Rassie van der Dussen a career-best 95 in a total of 325-6.

Australia were struggling at 119 for four and Warner could only watch as wickets fell early against a Proteas side whose own semi-final hopes had long since disappeared.&nbsp;

Australia captain Aaron Finch, Warner's opening partner, went for three, when he chipped Imran Tahir to short cover, sparking a typically exuberant celebration from the bowler.

Steve Smith, who like Warner was given a 12-month ban for his part in the ball-tampering scandal during a Test in Cape Town last year, fell lbw for seven to Dwaine Pretorius.

Nail-biting

Warner held firm, going past 600 runs for the tournament, with his latest century coming up in 100 balls when he edged Chris Morris for his 12th four.

He was eventually out when a drive off Dwaine Pretorius was well caught by a diving Morris at mid-on.

Carey, however, launched Tahir for six during his career-best ODI knock before his 69-ball innings ended when he carved Morris to Aiden Markram at deep cover to leave Australia 275-7 in the 46th over.

Usman Khawaja returned after retiring hurt earlier in the innings and helped get the target down to 25 off 12 balls before he was bowled for 18, walking across his stumps, by Kagiso Rabada.

The target eventually became 18 off a nail-biting last over -- bowled by Andile Phehlukwayo -- with one wicket standing.&nbsp;

And with 11 needed off two balls, last man Nathan Lyon holed out to Markram in the deep.&nbsp;

Earlier, Mitchell Starc equalled Australia legend Glenn McGrath's World Cup tournament record of 26 wickets, set at the 2007 event in the Caribbean, with a return of 2-59.

Markram (33), opening after South Africa veteran Hashim Amla was ruled out with a knee injury playing football in a warm-up on Friday, and Quinton de Kock (52) set the tone in front of a sun-drenched crowd in a first-wicket stand of 79.

Du Plessis, who drove fast bowler Pat Cummins for a superb six, completed the first hundred by a South African at this World Cup in 93 balls.

But he was out to the next ball he faced, slicing Jason Behrendorff to third man.

Van der Dussen fell short of his maiden ODI hundred when, trying to hit the last ball of the innings for six, he holed out off Cummins.

Australia captain Aaron Finch says it will be up to Glenn Maxwell whether he plays in Saturday's Cricket World Cup clash with South Africa after the all-rounder was struck on the forearm during a horror net session for the side.

Shaun Marsh was put out of the tournament on Thursday by a short delivery from teammate Pat Cummins which hit him on the wrist, and shortly afterwards Maxwell was sent to hospital by a blow from seamer Mitchell Starc.

"He (Maxwell) seems pretty good. He said he's been able to hold the bat no problem, it will just be a case of how he feels," Finch told reporters.

"At the end of the day, I think we will leave that call up to him, if he feels confident enough to get out there and do the job.

"All in all, he's a lot better than Shaun, obviously."

Finch says the team have rallied around to support Marsh, who has been replaced in the squad by batsman Peter Handscomb.

He was unfortunate to miss out on the World Cup after hitting a purple patch of form in the lead-up to the tournament.

"Shaun was obviously very disappointed. He is still in surgery at the moment, so we just wish him a speedy recovery. I think it hit the boys pretty hard," Finch said.

If Maxwell is not fit to face South Africa, Handscomb is likely to be drafted straight into the team.

"He will be 100 per cent ready to go," Finch said. "He was really stiff to miss out in the first place on the World Cup squad and every opportunity he's had recently with bat in hand, in the field, he's nailed."

Victory for Australia would mean they topped the table and set up a semi-final against New Zealand, avoiding two of the pre-tournament favourites in India and England.

It is a stunning reversal in fortunes for a side who had lost 20 of their previous 24 one-day international matches up to March this year.

"I think what's changed for us is our ability to win the key moments in games," Finch said. "The ability for somebody under any circumstances to put their hand up and play a key role to help win a game for Australia.

"That's not saying that wasn't happening. It was probably just guys would get the team into a position to win a game and then we wouldn't grab that key opportunity.

"So I think for me it's been about having a bit more experience around the group and guys who have been in World Cups, in tight series, in high-pressure environments, where they have got the job done before."

Australia's hopes of winning an Ashes series in England for the first time in 18 years have been boosted by former Test captain Steve Waugh agreeing to mentor the side.

Waugh, considered the embodiment of Australian grit, was enlisted by coach Justin Langer who has made a point of bringing in former greats to help rebuild the team's image after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year.

Ricky Ponting, Australia's record run-scorer, is currently assisting him at the World Cup in <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-jonny-bairstow-picks-world-cup-glory-over-ashes-win-217217&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjH9tOB7prjAhVGnY8KHV3nCRoQFjACegQIDhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw0VWfUrx9AWJqT_Za1_XXhj">England </a>ahead of the Ashes starting next month.

Test captain Tim Paine confirmed that Waugh -&nbsp;the last Australian skipper to win the Ashes in England in 2001 - would be with the team for the six-week campaign.

"I know it is something that 'JL' and myself have been quite big on, that is to try and get some of our past legends in and around the team," Paine said on the Cricket Australia website late Wednesday.

"During the World Cup as well, we have had Ricky (Ponting), and now with the Test series, we are very fortunate to have Steve Waugh who is, obviously, a legend and is going to be great service for myself as a leader and captain.

"I think to have someone like him around during a Test series is going to be great for our whole group," he added.

Ricky Ponting, Australia's record run-scorer, is currently assisting him at the World Cup in England ahead of the Ashes starting next month. Test captain Tim Paine confirmed that Waugh - the last Australian skipper to win the Ashes in England in 2001 - would be with the team for the six-week campaign. Renowned for his mental strength, Waugh played 168 Tests, including 46 against England, scoring 32 centuries. The first Ashes Test starts at Edgbaston in Birmingham on August 1.

West Indies great Clive Lloyd believes Australia and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/rohit-sharmas-twin-gems-equalling-kumar-sangakkaras-record-breaking-ms-dhonis-232420">India </a>are the "standout" teams at the World Cup but has urged Virat Kohli's side to boost their batting if they are to dethrone the reigning champions.

Australia, whose only loss at the tournament so far has come against India, are already through to the semi-finals.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-40-india-vs-bangladesh-232302">India </a>will be assured of joining them if they beat Bangladesh on Tuesday and the two-time former champions are likely to get through to the knockout stage in any event.

Lloyd, the West Indies' captain when they won the first two men's World Cups in 1975 and 1979, has been impressed by Australia and India.

"They have been the two standout teams for me at this World Cup," said Lloyd in an ICC column published on Tuesday.

"They have understood the conditions better than any of the others," he said.

But Lloyd said India's 31-run defeat by England at Edgbaston on Sunday had exposed a weakness in Kohli's team.

"England played the right kind of game against them by attacking the spinners and they need to strengthen their batting lower down the order," said Lloyd.

Lloyd, now 74, was one of the original powerful shotmakers, which are now commonplace in one-day cricket.

The former West Indies skipper has tipped <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australias-pat-cummins-issues-warning-to-world-cup-rivals-232269">Australia </a>left-hander Alex Carey, who scored 71 in the win against New Zealand, as a potential star of the tournament.

"Carey was a relative unknown beforehand but he bats with such maturity," he said. "He has the freedom to attack but also the technical skills needed to find the boundary,'' Lloyd said.

"He is a bolter and I have loved watching him play," he added.

The West Indies only have pride left to play for in their final group match against Afghanistan, with Jason Holder's men out of the running for a place in the semi-finals.

But Lloyd said it was "far from doom or gloom" for his old side, citing Nicholas Pooran's maiden ODI century in Monday's narrow <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-39-sri-lanka-vs-west-indies-231990">defeat by Sri Lanka</a> as a cause for optimism.&nbsp;

"He has done very well in this tournament and is someone we can really build around going forward," said Lloyd.

"He has a lot of things to learn but the raw ingredients are there for him to go on and become a fine player for the West Indies over the next few years," Lloyd added.

World Cup: India and Australia are 'standout' teams, says Clive Lloyd

Australian counter-terror police said they arrested three men in raids across Sydney on Tuesday, foiling a plot inspired by militant group Islamic State for attacks targeting a range of public buildings and embassies.

Australia, a staunch US ally, has been on heightened alert for attacks by home-grown radicals since 2014 and authorities say they have thwarted 16 major plots since.

Two of the arrested men, aged 20 and 23, are charged with being members of Islamic State, a crime under Australian laws, with the younger man accused of plotting the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/australia-man-accused-of-helping-islamic-state-build-missile-tech-held-12884">Sydney attack</a>, which police said was in the early stages of planning.

"We will say that they had a number of targets, including police stations, defence establishments, embassies and councils, courts and churches," Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney told reporters in Sydney.

"There are still those people within the community who wish to do us harm," he said. "I want to say they don't represent the Islamic faith. Their actions are criminal and they represent hatred and terror."

Police made the arrests because they had compiled sufficient evidence for charges, McCarthy said, but offered few details.

A third man, aged 30, is charged with welfare fraud.

The police did not name those charged, who are expected to appear in court later in the day or on Wednesday.

The so-called Islamic State caliphate was established in 2014 and although it has been driven in the past year from all territory it once held in Syria and Iraq, authorities say it remains a threat, as an underground movement.

McCarthy said the man charged with plotting had been tracked by Australian authorities since mid-2018 when he drew their attention by travelling to Lebanon.

He now faces life imprisonment, if convicted. The others face sentences as long as 10 years.

Australian counter-terror police say they foiled Sydney attack plot

Australia paceman Pat Cummins has fired a warning at the nation's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup</a> rivals, saying the champions may have "clicked" but are yet to put in a complete performance at the global showpiece.

Aaron Finch's Australia booked their place in the semi-finals early with a comprehensive win over England and carried on the form with another convincing victory over New Zealand at Lord's on Saturday.

A relaxed Australia will head into their final round-robin match against already-eliminated South Africa in Manchester on Saturday with the benefit of a week's rest before bigger tests await.

"I think just everything's clicked, the batting, the bowling, our game plan is the way we've wanted to play," Cummins told reporters.

"Even just everyone being comfortable in their roles and comfortable around each other. I think it takes time but everyone's in a really good place.

"The thing we have spoken about, we have managed to scrape home wins without really putting through a complete performance," Cummins added.

"With each game, we have got a little bit better."

Led by pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, Australia's quicks have bowled superbly throughout the tournament but have gone up a level in recent matches, skittling England's vaunted batting lineup for 221 before routing New Zealand for 157.

Jason Behrendorff's promotion to open the bowling with Starc, with Cummins switched to first change bowler, has been key to the improvement.

Cummins has only nabbed one wicket from the last two matches but has proved highly effective at keeping the batsmen pinned down during the middle overs.

He captured veteran Ross Taylor's wicket and conceded a miserly 14 runs from his six overs' work against New Zealand.

"I think it's a massive change," he said of the shift from new ball to first change bowler. "I think it's a lot different to say red ball cricket where the ball kind of stays hard and there might be some swing on offer.

"I think it's kind of outside of those first eight to 10 overs, there is no swing, the ball is not as hard, normally the batters are set.

"Jason and Starcy have been brilliant up front. My role is to just try and hold them a little bit and hopefully they take a risk. It (feels) like I have done that job pretty well."

The match against South Africa will be a dead rubber but also the first that opener David Warner and former skipper Steve Smith have had against Faf du Plessis's side since they were suspended for ball-tampering during the Cape Town test in March, 2018.

Warner and Smith, whose one-year ban expired at the end of March, have been jeered at stadiums throughout the tournament but have not let it affect them, with the former leading the tournament's runs list with 516 and the latter chipping in 287.

Cummins did not feel the ball-tampering history would add much significance to the Proteas game.

"I know Dave and Smithy have played quite a bit with (South Africa's players) in IPL and played heaps of times before so I wouldn't have thought so," he said.

Australia's Pat Cummins issues warning to World Cup rivals

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/francis-pope-discusses-ethics-of-artificial-intelligence-with-microsoft-chief-brad-smith-197242">The Vatican</a> on Monday reaffirmed Catholic teaching that priests cannot reveal what they learn in confession, in an apparent response to moves in Australia and elsewhere to force them to do so in cases of sexual abuse.

A document from the Vatican's Apostolic Penitentiary, which deals with issues of the sacrament of confession, said no government or law could force clergy to violate the seal "because this duty comes directly from God."

The document, which did not mention any countries or the sexual abuse crisis, complained of a "worrying negative prejudice against the Catholic Church".

Most countries' legal systems respect the religious right of a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/catholic-priests-burn-harry-potter-books-in-poland-207284">Catholic priest</a> not to reveal what he has learned in confession, similar to attorney-client privilege.

But the sexual abuse crisis that has embroiled the Catholic Church around the world has seen this right challenged more frequently.

In Australia, an inquiry into child abuse recommended that the country introduce a law forcing religious leaders to report child abuse, including priests told of it during confession.

So far, two of Australia's eight states have introduced laws making it a crime for priests to withhold information about abuse heard in confession. Others are still considering their response.

In May, the California state Senate passed a bill to require the seal of confession to be broken if priests learn of or suspect sexual abuse while hearing the confession of a fellow priest or a colleague such as a Church worker.

Church leaders in both the United States and Australia have opposed such laws and the document backed them up unequivocally.

"Any political action or legislative initiative aimed at breaking the inviolability of the sacramental seal would constitute an unacceptable offence against the (freedom of the Church)," the document said.

"(The Church) does not receive its legitimacy from individual States, but from God; it (breaking the seal) would also constitute a violation of religious freedom, legally fundamental to all other freedoms, including the freedom of conscience of individual citizens, both penitents and confessors," it said.

The document said a priest could not demand that a penitent turn himself or herself into authorities as a condition for receiving absolution from their sins.

The penitent also cannot free a priest from his obligation to respect the seal of confession, it said.

The Facebook page of an Australian man missing in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/americas/north-koreas-missile-tests-not-breach-of-trust-us-president-donald-trump-217629">North Korea</a> reappeared then disappeared again on Saturday hours before Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia is still trying to find out what has happened to him.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/australian-student-feared-detained-in-north-korea-230713">Alek Sigley</a>, one of only a handful of Western students in the secretive country, has been missing for several days.

His family had taken down his social media accounts to prevent unnecessary speculation online.

Sigley's Facebook page reappeared overnight, but it is not known who reinstated it, or why.

It had disappeared again on Saturday by 2 p.m. Sydney time (0400 GMT) and remained down on Sunday morning.

Sigley's Twitter account has remained online and members of the public have posted messages of support there.

The missing man's last posts on his Twitter and Facebook profiles are from Monday, June 24, and his family has not heard from him since Tuesday.

Speaking from the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, Prime Minister Morrison said he had spoken to Sigley's family and said Australia was still trying to find out what happened to him.

"I will just be measured in what I say because that is all about using the best opportunities we have right now too, to inform ourselves about where Alek is and what his safety is and where he is being held, in what conditions," he told reporters on Saturday evening.

Morrison said numerous world leaders had offered help to find Sigley and bring him home.

When asked if US President Donald Trump's visit to the Korean demilitarized zone (DMZ) presented an opportunity for the Americans to make representations, Mr Morrison said he would not allow the issue to be taken up with other agendas.

"We're going to work with everybody to secure Alek's safety and the best way we can do that is doing it quietly, effectively, working with our partners," he said.

"This is, not allowing this to be taken up into other agendas, it’s not about that, it’s simple for me, about Alek's safety. Sorry."

The 29-year-old Australian moved to North Korea to study for a master's degree in Korean literature at Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang, and also ran a small tour company specialising in educational trips to North Korea.

Sigley has been an unusually active social media user for someone living in North Korea, updating his social media accounts with photos and blog posts about benign subjects such as food and fashion.

The treatment of foreign citizens by the secretive North has long been a contentious issue.
