Arsenal's Premier League title challenge got off to a winning start on Saturday but the big-spending Gunners were made to sweat in a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

First-half goals from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka&nbsp;had the home side cruising at the Emirates.

But they were made to suffer a nervy finale after Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to pull a goal back for Forest seven minutes from time.

The day got off to an embarrassing start for Arsenal as kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes due to issues with an e-ticketing scheme that left tens of thousands of fans unable to take their seats in time for the scheduled 1130GMT kick-off.

Once the action got underway, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber were handed their league debuts after joining for combined fees in excess of £200 million ($254 million).

However, three points for the home side was soured by an injury suffered by Timber as he pulled up early in the second half.

By that point the game should have been over as a contest as Arsenal sprang out of the blocks.

Mikel Arteta's men are looking to go one better after finishing second behind treble-winners Manchester City last season.

City cruised to a 3-0 win at Burnley to open the Premier League season on Friday night and Arsenal should have followed suit rather than holding on for the final whistle.

Forest have their home form to thank for staying in the English top flight last season on their return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.

Steve Cooper has targeted an improvement to their poor return on the road, but they barely laid a glove on the hosts until the introduction of Awoniyi and Anthony Elanga late on.

<h2>Martinelli magic</h2>

Forest's rearguard resistence lasted 26 minutes until the visitors were undone by a moment of magic from Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian's turn took him past two defenders before the ball broke for Nketiah to drill low beyond Forest debutant Matt Turner, on his return to the Emirates after leaving Arsenal this week.

Turner had no chance with the second six minutes later as Saka cut onto his favoured left foot and arrowed a trademark strike high into the far corner.

Timber had recovered from a knock at the end of the first period to take his place at the start of the second.

But the Dutch international then pulled up holding his hamstring and had to be replaced just four minutes into the second-half.

Awoniyi was surprisingly left out by Cooper despite scoring in Forest's final four games of last season, including the winner against Arsenal that secured his side's survival in May.

The Nigerian continued his scoring streak by turning home at the near post after former Manchester United winger Elanga sprinted the length of the field from an Arsenal corner.

Arsenal held on through seven minutes of added time, but it was a far from convincing start to their quest to become English champions for the first time in 20 years.

Football: West Ham manager David Moyes unable to 'plan anything' as Declan Rice's transfer drags on

Arsenal announced the signing of Dutch international defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax on Friday as the Gunners continue to strengthen for a Premier League title challenge.

The 22-year-old will cost an initial 40 million euros ($45 million, £34 million) with a further five million euros worth of add-ons, Ajax confirmed in a statement.

Timber won two Eredivisie titles in 121 appearances for Ajax and was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup.

He can operate at both centre-back and right-back and will bring added depth to an Arsenal defence that struggled to cope with injuries to William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu towards the end of last season.

"We’re really excited that Jurrien has joined us," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

"He is a versatile young defender, who will fit into our system and provide our squad with so much added quality."

Arsenal missed out on a first Premier League title for 19 years last season after finishing second behind treble winners Manchester City.

But Arteta has been strongly backed in Arsenal's quest to end a two-decade wait to win the English top flight.

Kai Havertz has already joined from Chelsea in a £65 million deal, while Declan Rice is expected to complete a move worth up to £105 million from West Ham in the coming hours.

"I'm excited to play for this beautiful club, and I can't wait to start, and to see the fans obviously in the stadium," said Timber.

"I just like the way Arsenal play, it's a bit similar to Ajax’s style and I like to play from the back. I can see a lot of similarities, especially in the way Arsenal and Ajax want to play."

<h2>Chelsea to fund Pochettino's transfer plans</h2>

As things stand, Chelsea will look to raise money in the transfer window before they look for incomings for new manager Mauricio Pochettino. With two years left on his contract, the club will be aware that this transfer window could see them coup a big transfer fee rather than selling next season or losing him for free in 2025. Havertz has played a key role for Chelsea in recent times and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final in 2021.

The West London club will lose a certain amount on Havertz having acquired his services for $89million in 2020. So far he has made 139 appearances for the West London club and scored 32 times having signed from Bayer Leverkusen. It reported that the deal will be guaranteed $70&nbsp;million which will see certain add-on clauses which Chelsea will receive when certain targets are reached by the player.

<h2>Arsenal’s interest in Declan Rice</h2>

Havertz, however, won’t be the only player that could make his switch across the town of London as Arsenal are also interested in signing West Ham United star Declan Rice. A reported deal worth $115 million is tabled by the Gunners as they look to sign the Hammers captain. Rice recently captained West Ham to their first trophy in 43 years as he helped the side win the UEFA Conference League at the start of the month.

A move to the North of the English capital will see him join a host of players who have made the switch across the divide. Players like Olivier Giroud, David Luiz, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Willian are recent examples of players who have played for both Chelsea and Arsenal.

High-ranking officers outnumber heavy artillery in British Army: Report

Football - List of teams with most Premier League Titles

Arsenal were worthy contenders in the title race but Manchester City upped their game when it mattered most to win their fifth Premier League trophy in six years, defender Kyle Walker said. Arsenal's eight-point lead at the top evaporated in the last two months amid a wretched run of form and Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest gave City an unassailable lead as they won the title with three games to spare after an incredible run.

Since Pep Guardiola's City lost 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur at the start of February, they won 13 of their 14 games and did not lose enroute to the title.

"Arsenal pushed us right to the limit, they've been fantastic, so all credit to them. We just went on an incredible run, they had a few hiccups, we capitalised on it and we've managed to end up where we have," Walker told City's website. "It's the players we've got. We're a bunch of lads who have achieved so much over the last number of years and we understand the standards we've set.

"As for inspiration, there's the captains, managers and so on but we drive ourselves. We achieved so much over the past five or six years, but we knew the bar wasn't high enough at the start of the season."\

City also had the psychological edge in the title race after they beat Arsenal twice in that run, scoring four in the second game -- a blow Arsenal briefly recovered from before they withered under pressure.

"We wanted to prove anyone doubting us wrong - it wasn't good enough," Walker added. "It was the first season where we kept on scoring late goals so until the end, we know we can do it.

"The standards of Premier League have gone up, but this is what this club is built for. Certainly that's how it's been for the six years I've been here, so fair play to everyone involved."

ALSO READ: Premier League: Arsenal's defeat to Nottingham Forest hands Man City third consecutive title "Arsenal pushed us right to the limit, they've been fantastic, so all credit to them. We achieved so much over the past five or six years, but we knew the bar wasn't high enough at the start of the season."\ City also had the psychological edge in the title race after they beat Arsenal twice in that run, scoring four in the second game -- a blow Arsenal briefly recovered from before they withered under pressure.

Manchester City won the Premier League for the fifth time in six seasons after second-placed Arsenal lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

A second consecutive defeat for the Gunners left Mikel Arteta's men still four points adrift of City with one game left for them to play.

Taiwo Awoniyi's winning goal also had huge ramifications at the bottom of the table as Forest are now safe from relegation in their first season back in the top flight for 23 years.

City's title triumph could be the start of a treble as Pep Guardiola's men face Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Inter Milan in the Champions League final next month.

Premier League: Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest hands Man City third consecutive title

China’s rapidly growing nuclear arsenal is a “concern to global and regional stability”, Group of Seven leaders said Friday after talks on nuclear disarmament in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

Arsenal's dwindling title hopes are all but over after the Gunners suffered a 0-3 loss against Brighton in the English Premier League. Mikel Arteta's side were by far the best team in the first half of the season but have struggled towards the business end of the season. They have guaranteed Champions League football for next season but will end the season trophyless.

Is Arsenal's season a failure?

Arsenal showed no sign of raising the white flag in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory at Newcastle United on Sunday to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to one point. Defeat would have left Arsenal's hopes of a first title since 2004 hanging by a thread but Martin Odegaard's brilliant strike and a Fabian Schar own goal sealed a vital victory.

Newcastle, bidding to cement third place and take a big step towards a top-four finish, dominated early on but Odegaard's sweet strike after 14 minutes gave the visitors the lead. Schar then inadvertently turned in Gabriel Martinelli's cross with 20 minutes remaining.

City, who have won 10 straight games to catch and then overhaul Arsenal, have 82 points from 34 games with the Gunners on 81 having played a game more.

Newcastle stay third on 65 but Manchester United could overtake them later on Sunday if they win at West Ham United.

If ever there was a test of the resolve of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team it was a trip to St James's Park to face a Newcastle side on a roll in their quest to return to the Champions League after an absence of two decades.

They were fortunate to survive an early onslaught with Newcastle's Jacob Murphy thumping a second-minute shot against the foot of the post and Alexander Isak forcing Aaron Ramsdale into an early save.

Newcastle were then awarded a penalty after Bruno Guimaraes was blocked by Jakub Kiwior and referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot for apparent handball, but after a VAR check the decision was overturned to the relief of the visitors.

Arsenal then took the lead with their first shot as Odegaard was allowed too much time and sent a skidding effort inside the post from outside the penalty area.

The visitors were devastatingly effective on the counter-attack and Odegaard was at the heart of all their best work, releasing Martinelli who forced Nick Pope into a smart save.

Pope came to Newcastle's rescue again in stoppage time at the end of a frenetic first half, keeping out Odegaard's shot.

The second half began in almost identical fashion to the first with Murphy's cross being headed against the post by Isak and Ramsdale somehow keeping out Schar's close-range header.

Martinelli then curled a shot against the crossbar and in the 71st minute carried the ball down the left before accelerating to the byline and fizzing in a low cross that deflected off the unfortunate Schar into the net.

PL: Arsenal overcome Newcastle challenge with a 2-0 win, stay alive in title race

Arsenal's recent success in the Premier League could provide the blueprint for Chelsea's bid to rebuild after a disappointing campaign, interim manager Frank Lampard said ahead of the sides' meeting on Tuesday.

Chelsea's 2-0 defeat by Brentford last week left them 12th in the standings, stumbling towards possibly their worst campaign since the 1993-94 season - when they finished 14th under Glenn Hoddle - despite their new U.S. owners' huge outlay.

On Tuesday, Chelsea face an Arsenal side that finished outside the top four for six straight seasons between 2016-2022, but currently find themselves locked in an intense title race after significant improvement under manager Mikel Arteta.

"There is a long process in terms of getting to where you want to get to. I remember going up against Mikel in that early stage," Lampard told reporters ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

"Sometimes they played five at the back, sometimes four; now they have a clear identity. There has been a lot of work through the team, Mikel, alignment and good recruitment. Do we have the possibility to do that? Yes. Will it take time and good decisions? Absolutely, yes. But you can get there.

"The manager was being questioned, the players and owners were and that process can take two or three years. They are a great example of that done well."
Lampard conceded that Chelsea's players are "low on confidence" due to their poor run of form, but challenged his side to counteract their lack of self belief with hard work.

"You can only work to get a level of performance to bring confidence back," Lampard said. "I've been here in moments where confidence has been low because nobody likes losing games. I had moments as a player where we dropped our standards as a collective and we had to lift it.

"Looking through history, we managed to get it back through hard work. We can only consider the future and work really hard to get the squad where we want it."
Lampard added that defender Kalidou Koulibaly could be "out for a while" after injuring his hamstring against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

PL: Arsenal's rebuilding process must inspire Chelsea, urges manager Frank Lampard

The biggest clash of the Premier League season is here. Champions Manchester City host Arsenal in what is being billed as the 'Premier League Final'. Who will win the battle of the top-two at the Etihad?

Arsenal or Man City – Who will win the 'Premier League Final'? | WION Sports Extra

Arsenal struck two late goals to escape with a point in a pulsating 3-3 home draw with bottom club Southampton but their Premier League title hopes suffered another setback on a Friday night of frazzled nerves in north London.

For much of a stomach-churning encounter it appeared Arsenal were self-destructing in their quest to hold off Manchester City and win the league for the first time since 2004. They gifted a goal to Carlos Alcaraz after 28 seconds and were 2-0 down inside 15 minutes as former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott fired home to stun the home crowd.

Gabriel Martinelli struck back for the Gunners after 20 minutes but Ruben Selles's Southampton refused to wilt and regained their two-goal lead in the 66th minute as substitute Duje Caleta-Car headed in at the back post. The visitors, seeking a first win in seven league games in their desperate battle to extend their 10-year stay in the top flight, appeared to be heading for a priceless victory.

Many Arsenal fans were heading for the exits when captain Martin Odegaard curled a shot past Gavin Bazunu in the 88th minute to throw the hosts a lifeline. And when Bukayo Saka equalised in the 90th minute the stadium was rocking on its foundations.

With the home fans willing Arsenal to find a winner, just as they did a month ago when coming back from two goals down against Bournemouth, they laid siege to the Southampton goal.

In eight nailbiting minutes of stoppage time Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork, fellow substitute Reiss Nelson's shot was deflected agonisingly wide of the post and Gabriel Jesus was denied a spot kick after tumbling in a congested penalty area.

There was to be no final twist to the plot, however, and both sets of players looked spent at the final whistle, collapsing to the turf after a draw that did little to help either side in their very different objectives.

Arsenal increased their lead over reigning champions Manchester City to five points ahead of Wednesday's blockbuster clash of the top two at The Etihad, although City now have two games in hand and are clear favourites for the title.

Southampton belied their precarious position with some courageous football, but remain bottom with 24 points, three below the safety zone having played a game more than those above them.

Despite the setback, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained defiant. "It hasn't changed," he said.

"Obviously the task is even bigger but now we have to do the simple things better and cut out mistakes. We made it very difficult again for ourselves but the way we reacted I love my players more than ever."

PL: Arsenal draw 3-3 with bottom-placed Southampton as title hopes take a hit

Arsenal dropped points again in the Premier league, squandering a two-goal lead for the second straight game. The draw against London rivals West Ham once again exposed the Gunners' inexperience and raised more questions about their ability to seal the title. With the game against champions Manchester City coming up, have Mikel Arteta's side already lost the Premier League title?

Arsenal squander two-goal lead again | WION Sports Extra

Arsenal's bid to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004 is in danger of imploding, but Mikel Arteta remains adamant the leaders can cope with the pressure of the title race. Arteta's side blew a two-goal lead for a second successive game as West Ham hit back to snatch a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday.

After squandering the same advantage in last weekend's 2-2 draw at Liverpool, the Gunners once again paid the price for taking their foot off the gas. Although Arsenal are four points clear of second placed Manchester City, it is the champions who have all the momentum heading into the final weeks of a gripping title battle.

Mikel Arteta confident of Arsenal not losing track in title race after successive draw in Premier League

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has made "exceptional" progress at the London outfit after having suffered relegation with two clubs earlier, manager Mikel Arteta said. Before joining Arsenal in August 2021, Ramsdale was relegated from the top flight with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old has played an important role in Arsenal's title charge this season, most recently making a series of vital saves in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in the last game.

"He has been really, really good and probably against the odds," Arteta told reporters on Friday. "Because when you look at his past and where he was coming from, he got relegated twice, it was difficult to imagine it.

"But we saw he had that character, charisma and personality to play for our club and the potential qualities to feed into our way of playing. When you see the development, he had in the past two seasons I think he is exceptional."

Ramsdale, who has three caps for England, has made 12 saves in the league so far, behind only Manchester United's David de Gea and Newcastle United's Nick Pope, who are tied at 13.

Arteta said the club tried to protect Ramsdale when he faced abuse on social media after his arrival, adding that he was facing criticism even before he played his first game for Arsenal.

"It was tough, he needed some support and we had to protect him, but he was ready to handle that," Arteta said. "He knew that was going to happen, we discussed that before: 'You're coming from this situation, you're going to Arsenal and you're going to have a lot of question marks over your head.' And you have to do that."

Aaron Ramsdale has been very good and has made exceptional progress against odds, says Arsenal manager Arteta

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead against Liverpool at Anfield and failed to go eight points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League title race. The Gunners appeared to be cruising to a first league victory at Anfield since 2012 when goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus put them two in front inside 30 minutes. However a scuffle between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to galvanise the Reds. Mohamed Salah pulled one back for the hosts and Roberto Firmino grabbed the equaliser in the 87th Minute. It was only a few brilliant saves from Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale that kept the scores level. Champions Manchester City are six points behind Arsenal, but with a game in hand over Mikel Arteta's side. Arsenal have to travel to the Etihad Stadium and Pep Guardiola's side will be favourites to win that encounter. Many experts believe that City will make their experience count and once again come out on top.

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead in a pulsating 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Sunday to give Manchester City fresh hope of retaining the Premier League title. Mikel Arteta's men edged six points ahead of City at the top of the table, but the defending champions now have the destiny of the title in their own hands. City have a game in hand and host the Gunners at the Etihad later this month.

Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus appeared to have Arsenal cruising towards an eighth consecutive league win. But Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back before half-time to spark a Liverpool fightback.

Salah missed a second-half penalty before Roberto Firmino headed in the equaliser three minutes from time. Jurgen Klopp's men then missed a series of chances to complete the comeback as Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale salvaged a point for his side.

Arsenal remain without an away league win to Liverpool since 2012 as they stumbled over one of the major hurdles between them and the title despite a perfect start.

It took just eight minutes for the visitors to make the breakthrough as Bukayo Saka surged through the Liverpool defence and the ball broke kindly for Martinelli to prod past his Brazilian international teammate Alisson Becker.

Only a glaring miss from Jesus and a fine save by Alisson to deny Oleksandr Zinchenko prevented Arsenal from being out of sight within 15 minutes.

Virgil van Dijk's slump in form has played a major role in Liverpool's collapse from the team that came close to an unprecedented quadruple last season to mid-table mediocrity.

The Dutch centre-back was caught on his heels as Arsenal doubled their lead when Jesus was left unmarked to head in Martinelli's cross on 28 minutes.

But signs of a youthful side going for their first title finally showed once Salah halved the arrears three minutes before half-time.

Liverpool could even have been level by the break as Jordan Henderson blazed another big chance over. But that was just the start of the drama as Robertson was elbowed by assistant referee Hatzidakis as the players left the field for half-time.

That incident fired Liverpool up as they came flying out the blocks in the second half and had a golden opportunity to level when Rob Holding brought down Diogo Jota, but Salah slotted the penalty wide.

Salah nearly made amends moments later as Ramsdale produced a stunning save to keep his side in front and the England goalkeeper was needed again nine minutes from time to save a one-on-one with Darwin Nunez.

Firmino finally made Liverpool's pressure count when he headed home Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross to set up a grandstand finish.

Salah blazed over a glorious chance before Ramsdale made remarkable saves from the Egyptian and Ibrahima Konate to ensure Arsenal escaped just with a point.

But Liverpool's rally may prove too little, too late both on the day and for their chances of Champions League football next season.

PL: Arsenal blow chance to win at Anfield as Liverpool score late to draw 2-2

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was undeterred by the club's poor record at Anfield, targeting a win against Liverpool on Sunday that would keep them on course to win the Premier League title.

Arteta's men lead Manchester City by eight points at the top of the table ahead of the weekend fixtures, with Pep Guardiola's team in action against bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday.

The Gunners have not won a league game at Anfield since Arteta played in a 2-0 win in 2012.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have won the past six league meetings between the sides at home by a combined score of 22-4.

But Liverpool are languishing in eighth place in the table, 29 points behind the Gunners, and Arsenal have already ended a long wait to win away at Tottenham this season.

"We have to enjoy it," Arteta said at his pre-match press conference. "We really need to embrace the moment and go for it.

"The team is really full of enthusiasm and positivity and we know we have a big challenge but a big opportunity to go to Anfield and do something we haven't done for many years. That is what is driving the team in the last few days.

"We know what we have to do. We've played in the toughest places."

Gabriel Jesus' double in a 4-1 win over Leeds last week -- his first league start since November -- has given Arteta options up front.

Bukayo Saka is set to return after missing the match due to illness, meaning only two of Jesus and the in-form Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are likely to start.

"It's much better to have that problem because at the moment they are all looking really good," added Arteta.

"It depends on the moment, what we want to do, the quality we are seeking and the relationships that we want on certain days.

"Then obviously you can make five changes (during the game), so you have the ability to change the game with those players, which is great for us."

Premier League: Mikel Arteta's Arsenal ready for final push in title race, look to end winless run at Anfield

For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta the return of Gabriel Jesus to his forward line must feel like the signing of a new player. The Brazilian was back in the starting line-up for the first time in the Premier League since November on Saturday and struck twice in a 4-1 defeat of Leeds United. The former Manchester City frontman, who suffered a knee injury at the World Cup, was substituted in the second half and left the pitch to a standing ovation.

His first goals in six months helped Arsenal restore their eight-point lead over Manchester City in the title race and with nine games remaining the Londoners are close to winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

There are several tough hurdles still to overcome and Arteta's squad is being stretched by injuries and illness, but Jesus being back is a massive tonic.

"Delighted for him. They all were. We were all clapping for him," Arteta told reporters. "He's been working so hard for the last four or five months with a lot of support from the team and the staff. Today he deserved the chance to start. He grabbed the opportunity with a lot of conviction and with two goals."

Sickness meant Arsenal's in-form Bukayo Saka was only on the bench on Saturday while Ben White, who scored their second goal, was also struggling but managed to start.

Centre back William Saliba was also ruled out through injury as was forward Eddie Nketiah who has played such a key role while Jesus was recovering from injury.

Yet despite being off the pace in the first half, Arsenal again showed the kind of togetherness and sprit that will be hugely important in the nervous weeks ahead.

"We are really looking forward to it," Arteta said of the challenge. "We go to the next target and we go for it."

On the depth of his squad, Arteta said: "First of all the players have to feel trust, that we trust them. They need to feel that confidence. The players have to have the chance, and they need to be preparing to perform in the right way to have the chance like Rob (Holding) did and to actually perform.

"I'm really happy. We need everybody. We've had long-term injuries and the team needs to somehow find a way to keep winning and keep performing."

City and Liverpool have finished as the top two in four of the past five Premier League seasons, but the Reds are struggling just to qualify for the Champions League after a dreadful campaign and were given another lesson in the gap they have to bridge be back challenging next season. A chastening defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's men still seven points adrift of the top four down in sixth.

A groin injury meant Haaland was watching on from the stands alongside his father and former City midfielder Alfie Haaland. Despite the absence of their 42-goal striker, Pep Guardiola's men made a positive start as Alisson Becker was forced into saves from Gundogan and Rodri before Riyad Mahrez fired a free-kick inches wide. But City were caught out on the counter-attack as Liverpool went in front on 17 minutes.

The home fans were screaming for offside as Diogo Jota broke in behind the City defence before teeing up Mohamed Salah to slot home his 23rd goal of the season. A VAR review showed Manuel Akanji had played the Portuguese forward onside.

Guardiola was on his knees when Mahrez blasted over another great chance inches over. But he did not have to wait long for his side to show their quality even shorn of Haaland. De Bruyne, Mahrez and Grealish combined to open up the Liverpool defence and Alvarez was left with the simple task of slotting in his 13th goal of the season despite spending most of the campaign as Haaland's deputy.

It took just 53 seconds of the second half for City to edge in front thanks to another scintillating team move. Alvarez was the creator this time as his cross-field pass freed Mahrez to race into acres of space behind the Liverpool defence. The Algerian's cross was perfectly weighted to cut out Alisson for De Bruyne to tap into an unguarded net.

If City's first two goals were the fruit of collective brilliance, Liverpool's defending for the third summed up a miserable season for Klopp's men. Alvarez was afforded an incredible amount of time inside the box by Fabinho to pick out a shot and, when his effort was blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gundogan also had the space to take a touch before firing into the top corner.

Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in nine games this season and the punishment did not end there for the visitors. Grealish was the standout individual on the day and rounded off arguably his best performance as a City player with the fourth goal.

City's movement off the ball was again too good for a cumbersome Liverpool defence as Grealish and De Bruyne exchanged a one-two before the Premier League's most expensive player of all time side-footed into the far corner.

Arsenal, who face Leeds later on Saturday, maintain the upper hand in the title race. But City could be coming to the boil at just the right time after scoring 17 goals in their last three games and with Arsenal still to visit the Etihad later this month.

Premier League: Manchester City romp Liverpool in statement 4-1 win; move within 5 points of Arsenal

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger have been inducted into the Premier League (PL) Hall of Fame for their services to the English game. While Ferguson won 13 PL titles during his time in charge at Old Trafford Wenger won the 2004 title having gone the entire season unbeaten and being the only manager to achieve the feat.

"The dominance of Manchester United under Sir Alex remains unmatched after he guided them to an incredible 13 titles across 21 Premier League seasons," he said.

Premier League: Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger become first managerial inductees in Hall of Fame

Arsenal surged eight points clear at the top of the Premier League as Bukayo Saka's brace inspired a 4-1 rout of Crystal Palace on Sunday. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the first half at the Emirates Stadium to put the leaders on course for a sixth successive league victory. It was redemption for Martinelli, whose missed penalty condemned Arsenal to Europa League last 16 defeat in their shoot-out against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta's side needed just 45 minutes against struggling Palace to erase the bitter taste of that loss. Saka followed Martinelli's goal by doubling Arsenal's lead before half-time. Granit Xhaka netted the third after the interval and Jeff Schlupp's reply was no consolation as the influential Saka's second capped Arsenal's stylish display.

PL: Bukayo Saka scores a brace as Arsenal crush Crystal Palace 4-1 at home, move eight points clear at top

Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves scored an incredible equaliser and the Portuguese team went on to knock Arsenal out of the Europa League with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory in Thursday's last 16 second leg.

Sporting trailed when Granit Xhaka gave Premier League leaders Arsenal the lead in the first half at the Emirates Stadium.

But Portugal midfielder Goncalves forced extra-time when he beat Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale with a breathtaking strike from 46 yards out.

Goncalves's audacious goal was reminiscent of David Beckham's long-range chip for Manchester United against Wimbledon that launched him to superstardom in 1996.

With reality television star Kim Kardashian and her Arsenal fan son Saint watching from the stands, a pulsating encounter ended level at 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate, requiring penalties to settle the tie.

It was Sporting who emerged with a shock victory as Gabriel Martinelli's effort was saved by Antonio Adan and Nuno Santos dispatched the winning kick.

"A huge blow obviously. There were moments in the first 75 minutes where we weren't at our level. We gave every ball away and we didn't have the capacity to take the game," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

"We had big chances to finish the game. We have to look at ourselves and why we were not good enough to go through,” he added.

Adding to Arsenal's problems, defenders William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu limped off injured in the first half after Arteta tried to protect his key players by making five changes.

Arsenal haven't won a European trophy since lifting the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1994 and their wait will go on for another year.

But the Gunners would gladly swap Europa League success for a long-awaited Premier League title.

Arsenal sit five points clear of second placed Manchester City in the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2004.

"We have 11 games left. Our next game with Palace is a final. All the work we do right now has to be towards Palace. We have to be better than this game," Arteta said.

Arteta had fielded a strong side in the first leg in Lisbon, but was more cautious ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, resting Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Ben White and Thomas Party.

Bewildered Ramsdale&nbsp;

Arteta's one concession to Arsenal's attempt to reach the last eight was including Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus for his first start since undergoing knee surgery following his injury at the World Cup last year.

Jesus, who came off the bench against Fulham on Sunday for his first appearance since the injury, nearly marked his return with a goal as he stretched to reach Reiss Nelson's cross, forcing Adan to save at full stretch.

Arsenal moved ahead in the 19th minute when Gabriel Martinelli got behind the Sporting defence for a shot that was parried out by Adan, with Xhaka lashing in the rebound from 12 yards.

The sight of Saliba limping off moments later dampened the celebrations of Xhaka's fifth goal this season.

Arteta had seen enough of Arsenal's injury problems and took off Jesus at the interval to preserve his star striker.

But Sporting mounted a strong showing in the second half and their pressure was rewarded in stunning style in the 62nd minute.

When Jorginho lost possession in the centre circle, Goncalves seized his chance, looking up to see Ramsdale off his line before unfurling an incredible lofted strike from just inside the Gunners half that arrowed over the Arsenal keeper and dipped in under the bar.

Ramsdale sat bewildered in the back of his own net and shell-shocked Arsenal almost conceded again when Paulinho headed just over.

Sporting's Marcus Edwards and Arsenal substitute Trossard both spurned glorious chances to win it before Lisbon's Manuel Ugarte was sent off for a second bookable offence when he clattered into Bukayo Saka in the 118th minute.&nbsp;
