Chilean forward Alex Sanchez returned to haunt his old club with the opening goal in Manchester United's 3-1 victory at Arsenal in a heavyweight FA Cup fourth-round clash on Friday.

In his first appearance back at the Emirates Stadium since swapping north London for Old Trafford a year ago, Sanchez silenced the inevitable boos to help continue Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's remarkable start as United's interim manager.

Sanchez and Jesse Lingard scored within two minutes of each other in the first half but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replied just before halftime to set up an engrossing second half.

Arsenal suffered injury blows, with defenders Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny both being forced off, although they pushed hard for an equaliser in the second period.

But United, who are second behind Arsenal in all-time FA Cup wins with 12, absorbed the pressure and sealed an eighth successive win for Solskjaer in the 82nd minute when substitute Anthony Martial tapped home after a counter-attack.

A feisty tie threatened to boil over late on with United substitute Marcus Rashford and Arsenal's Sead Kolasinac squaring up near the touchline to spark a melee in which a coin was thrown from the crowd towards Lingard.

Rashford and Kolasinac were both booked with six yellow cards handed out in total by referee Craig Pawson.

United's former Norwegian hitman Solskjaer arrived as a stop-gap with United at a low ebb after a rancorous few months under the sacked Jose Mourinho, but has transformed the mood at the club and appears to be unable to do any wrong.

"It's fantastic to go through in the cup. It's one of the hardest games you can get," Solskjaer, whose start has eclipsed that of the great Matt Busby, said.

"Today we looked more like a proper team. We looked more structured. Today was a big step forward.

"It's easy to get excited and talk about the future but we need to just keep working and think about the next game."

Confident United

United arrived brimming with confidence, especially after their Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago.

Solskjaer said Friday's display was a step up on that display at Wembley and his decision to start with two players who have struggled for form, proved inspirational.

Sanchez, who scored 60 league goals for Arsenal in 4-1/2 seasons, revelled in a rare start in front of the fans who used to sing his name, while Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku produced one of his best performances in a United shirt.

Arsenal began brightly and United back-up Sergio Romero was the busier of the two keepers.

But Unai Emery's side were rocked in the 31st minute when Lukaku's superb reverse pass put Sanchez in and he calmly rounded keeper Petr Cech before clipping in from a tight angle.

Two minutes later an Arsenal attack broke down, Luke Shaw set Lukaku away down the right and the Belgian rolled the ball across for the unmarked Lingard to sidefoot past Cech.

Arsenal got a lifeline just before the break when the excellent Aaron Ramsey's cut-back saw Alexandre Lacazette make a hash of his attempt but the ball arrived at the feet of Aubameyang who could not miss.

A hectic finish to an absorbing first half ended with Shkodran Mustafi heading just wide and straight after the interval Romero's reflex save stopped a Koscielny header.

Koscielny's involvement came to an abrupt end when the Arsenal skipper was accidentally caught in the face by Lukaku's trailing leg -- the Frenchman receiving lengthy treatment before groggily going off to be replaced by Matteo Guendouzi.

Out-of-favour Mesut Ozil also came off the bench, replacing Alex Iwobi, but Arsenal's hopes of rescuing the tie were over when Paul Pogba surged clear and his shot was parried by Cech into the path of Martial who sent the United fans wild.

In the night's other fourth-round clash Bristol City beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1.

FA Cup: Manchester United maintain perfect record under Solskjaer as they beat Arsenal 3-1

Arsenal face an injury crisis after a suspected broken jaw for captain Laurent Koscielny and ankle problem for Sokratis in Friday's FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Manchester United left them with only one fit recognised central defender.

Manager Unai Emery was already struggling for options at the back before Friday's 3-1 loss after cruciate knee ligament injuries ruled out two of his other defenders, Rob Holding in December and Hector Bellerin on Sunday, for the season.

Asked how bad the injuries were, Emery said: "I think this is not a big injury to Sokratis, it is his ankle, and Laurent Koscielny is going to the hospital to do the analysis."

"Maybe he has broken here," Emery added pointing to his jaw, "I hope not, but we have to wait."

Emery also said the injury problems contributed to the defeat against a United side who have now won all eight matches under new manager and former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The visitors took a two-goal lead through former Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled a goal back ahead of the break.

"At 1-2 I think we were in this moment with the possibility to draw or to take the possibility to win today," said Emery, "but I think these injuries, above all the second injury with Koscielny, didn't help us.

"Two injuries change a lot our possibilities."

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech to retire at end of season

In pics: Talking points from the Premier League weekend

Declan Rice's first goal for West Ham United earned his side a deserved first home victory over Arsenal for 13 years on Saturday -- the youngster's 48th-minute strike securing a 1-0 win at the London Stadium.

Arsenal began brightly and then had a flurry of chances after falling behind but West Ham were good value for the three points as they put a dent in Arsenal's top-four hopes.

Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri, rebuilding his career at West Ham after a doping ban, was at the heart of much of their best work on his Premier League debut for the club.

It was the Frenchman's neat lay-off that allowed 19-year-old midfielder Rice the space to curl a superb shot past Bernd Leno.

The victory pushed West Ham into eighth place, before the rest of the weekend's fixtures, and after a difficult start manager Manuel Pellegrini appears to be turning West Ham into a side capable of challenging for the European places.

The Chilean, who steered Manchester City to the title, was happy with his former player Nasri who was given a resounding ovation when he was substituted midway through the second half.

"It was a good performance by Samir, he kept the pace for 65 minutes," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "I've spoken to him and told him I'm sure he can be the player he was."

Rice had already headed wide before halftime but the 19-year-old was lethal the next time an opportunity arrived.

Felipe Anderson's surge down the right and cross saw the ball land at the feet of Nasri who had the vision to shift it to Rice who finished like a top-class striker -- celebrating his big moment wildly with his teammates.

Special Moment

"I can't really put it into words," said Rice ahead of his birthday on Monday. "Usually I would pick a pass but I was in the box so I thought why not take it on? It went in the top corner and we beat Arsenal so it's a special moment for me."

Striker Alexandre Lacazette had a double chance for the visitors early on, forcing a save from former Arsenal keeper Łukasz Fabianski before firing the rebound over the bar.

West Ham then took control with Nasri dragging a shot wide and then setting up influential Brazilian midfielder Anderson to fire a daisy-cutter just past the post.

At the other end, Matteo Guendouzi's 25-metre effort flew just wide but Arsenal struggled to exert any sustained pressure.

After Rice's goal Arsenal did manage to raise the tempo with Alex Iwobi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang going close but West Ham weathered the storm and were worthy winners.

Fifth-placed Arsenal failed to score for the first time in 21 league matches and have now lost consecutive away games. They could find themselves six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea by the time they host their London rivals next weekend.

"We didn't impose ourselves on the game but we had enough (quality) players to win the game," manager Unai Emery said.

Declan Rice's first West Ham goal enough to sink Arsenal

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said that the team "lost a very great opportunity to take three points" after his side <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/declan-rices-first-west-ham-goal-enough-to-sink-arsenal-189930">lost 1-0 at West Ham</a> in the Premier League on Saturday.&nbsp;

Emery&nbsp;expressed discontent after the defeat saying&nbsp;Arsenal did not deserve to lose, saying: "I think maybe the result is not one result we deserved."&nbsp;

"But in the game plan, in the control, we like to improve our way there," he added.&nbsp;

Emery also defended Mesut Ozil's omission from the squad. Ozil, Arsenal's highest-paid player, has returned to full training over the last week following a knee injury.&nbsp;

He was in defiant mood when asked why Ozil had not featured at all on Saturday, saying: "I decided the idea of the players that I think are the best for this match.&nbsp;

"We continue working with every player because they are all important, but today the decision was to come with these players," he concluded.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Arsenal to face Man United in FA Cup fourth round

Arsenal's team bus was briefly delayed on the way to Blackpool's stadium for Saturday's FA Cup third round tie after a home fan climbed onto its roof in protest at the home club's owners.

The fan was photographed sitting on top of the coach at Arsenal's team hotel shortly before the London side were to depart for the 1730 GMT kickoff at Bloomfield Road.

Supporters of third-tier Blackpool have regularly protested against club owner Owen Oyston and many are boycotting home games with gates averaging only 4,129 at their 17,000-seater ground which hosted Premier League football in 2010-11.

The protest did not last long, according to the BBC, and the Arsenal team arrived in good time for kickoff.

Arsenal returned to winning ways on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over struggling Fulham at the Emirates Stadium that moves them within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

The Gunners had been shaken by a 5-1 thrashing from leaders Liverpool on Saturday that exposed their defensive frailty, and that weakness was evident again in the early stages.

Fulham's highly rated youngster Ryan Sessegnon twice missed opportunities to put Fulham ahead - bursting through the Arsenal defence but firing wide, and then completely mis-kicking when Andre Schurrle found him unmarked inside the box.

Arsenal's nerves were eased in the 25th minute when Granit Xhaka struck after collecting a chip into the box from Alex Iwobi on his chest, turning and slotting home.

Alexandre Lacazette made it 2-0 in the 55th minute, converting after Sead Kolasinac pulled the ball back from the byline after some excellent team passing.

Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back for Claudio Ranieri's Fulham in the 69th minute and the Cottagers could have drawn level when Aleksandar Mitrovic forced a good save out of Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

But Aaron Ramsey added a third for Arsenal, finding the target after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's effort came out off the post.

Aubameyang then wrapped up the win with a diagonal shot from the right which took a slight deflection.

The win was only the second in six games for Arsenal but, as Xhaka noted, it was a much-needed one after the torment of Saturday's loss.

"After a bad game against Liverpool, we want to show a good game and to improve. Fulham have a new coach and a good team. We were a bit nervous at 2-1, but 4-1 makes us happy," he said.

Fulham remain deep in relegation trouble in 19th place in the 20-team league, with just 14 points from 21 games.

Ranieri said his team had paid the price for failing to take their chances and for tiring later in the game.

"When you play against the big teams you have to make the calculations very fast. I will show this to the players, and we work better than we have been working," he said.

The Italian hinted he may look to strengthen his team in the January transfer window, which opened on Tuesday.

"Maybe it's something we have to do. I will speak to the owner.

"I'm very, very pleased with my players. If we have the chance to buy some good players then (that's) welcome," he said.

Arsenal bounce back with 4-1 win over Fulham

Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday.

Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.

David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.

For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.&nbsp;

Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.&nbsp;

But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.

Austin's first touch, however,&nbsp;was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.

Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.

The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.&nbsp;

Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.&nbsp;

And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.

But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.

Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.

City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.&nbsp;

Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.&nbsp;

And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.&nbsp;

Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.

And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.

In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.

Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.

Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Emery calls for video assistant referee (VAR) after Arsenal concede two penalties against the Reds.

While addressing the media, Emery said, "The two last goals, two penalties - I think it's a lot for us. I think VAR is important when it comes here next year.

"Not just to do justice but I think it's also going to help the referees to take further their decision."

Liverpool conceded an early goal but failed to build on the momentum as Roberto Firmino produced a hat trick to power Liverpool to a ninth straight Premier League triumph.&nbsp;

"After our goal, I think we started well. At the beginning we are good positioning, but after our goal they push it and when they push it here, they play with great determination and they have players to make the difference in all the pitch, but especially in our box.&nbsp;

Emery added, "They scored two, three quick goals and it's a difficult moment for us but we spoke in the dressing room, it's another experience for us. Bad experience, to learn."

With 38 points, Arsenal remain secure in fifth place for the moment despite losing their fourth match in a row.

Sports scientist Danny Deigan, who has played a crucial role behind raising the fitness levels of the Indian football team, says the methods followed are "very similar" to the ones in leading clubs such as Arsenal.&nbsp;

"After visiting a number of EPL clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City, I can say that the methods that we use in the Indian team are very similar to them," Deigan stated.&nbsp;

"It's important to take note of the output against the top teams in Asia so that we can replicate them, and even do better in the upcoming Asian Cup," he added said during India's ongoing preparatory camp for the forthcoming continental showpiece.&nbsp;

It was Stephen Constantine who had suggested that "we need our players in the best of their shapes to run for 90 minutes".&nbsp;

"If you can't run, you can't fight on the pitch. The effect of the tests and the results have been great for us. The credit goes to Danny's effort in the past three years, and Joel Carter since earlier this year to raise the bar," the coach remarked.&nbsp;

"Moreover, Gigy (George), Pratik (Kamble) and Liaqat (Ali) have also put in their efforts to keep the players up and running," Constantine added.
On being asked about the regime which the team follows regularly, Deigan, who comes from Australia, informed the regular screenings are conducted every morning to assess the physical conditions.&nbsp;

"We run a screening every morning to assess the physical conditions of the players before the day's training. At the training, we start with a physical warm-up session that leads to the main training.&nbsp;

"After the training, we go on to analyse the physical condition of every player individually."&nbsp;

"During the screening, we look into their ankles, hamstrings, groins and also their ability to jump. It gives us an idea of their fatigue and readiness which helps us to plan the day's training," Deigan explained.&nbsp;

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.

The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.

Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.

Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.

Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says playmaker Mesut Ozil is needed at the club and would be part of their squad to face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-record 42 million pounds ($53 million), has been left out of the side regularly in the last two months, at first due to a back sprain and then - according to Emery - because of the physicality of some opponents.

The 30-year-old was not in the squad for the 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday when Emery repeatedly refused to say that he wanted to hold on to the German playmaker when questioned about his future.

The Spanish coach was more positive about Ozil in a news conference on Friday, however, with fifth-placed Arsenal looking to rebound from the Spurs loss and a 3-2 defeat by struggling Southampton in the league last weekend.

"I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality. We need Mesut Ozil," Emery said, before adding that the player has a future in the team.

"Every player wants to play and be okay to help the team when we need. The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn’t play in a match," he added.

"But I spoke with him and with the regularity in the season, I am telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us when the team needs his moments in the pitch in one game.

"Tomorrow he is in the 18 players, in the squad."

Ozil's contract is due to run until 2021, yet British media have reported the club may let him leave in January. The midfielder is one of the most expensive players on the payroll, earning a reported 350,000 pounds a week.

Arsenal have three matches before the transfer window opens as the packed festive schedule gets underway.

After their home match against Burnley, they visit Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Boxing Day before travelling to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool three days later.

Ozil could get his big chance to impress Emery against Burnley as the manager revealed Armenian attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not be fit for the clash. Left back Sead Kolasinac is available after he recovered from a thigh injury.

Arsenal said Thursday they have identified a man they suspect of throwing a plastic bottle at Tottenham's Dele Alli during Spurs' 2-0 League Cup quarter-final victory over their bitter North London rivals.

The England midfielder - who scored a delightful goal to put Spurs 2-0 up at the Emirates - was hit on the head as he took a throw-in in the second half.

Arsenal said in a statement that the club had been "embarrassed" by the incident, promising the individual concerned would face a lengthy ban.

The club statement said that the suspect left the stadium immediately after throwing the bottle at Alli in the 73rd minute of the match but an image of him has been found by analysing CCTV footage of the crowd.

"We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit," the club added.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised 22-year-old Alli for the control he showed during the incident.

"It was an amazing reaction," he told reporters on Thursday.

"In another country the player was going to be down on the pitch. Dele behaved really well. Arsenal should be grateful to him because the player could have gone down and created a massive problem."

And the Spurs boss said he did not think Arsenal should be punished.

Earlier this week a Tottenham fan was handed a four-year football banning order after throwing a banana skin towards Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when the teams met in an acrimonious clash at the Emirates on December 2.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players in that Premier League derby, which Arsenal won 4-2.

Both sets of players were involved in a fracas after Eric Dier celebrated his goal in front of Arsenal's substitutes.

Spurs have been fined £50,000 ($63,000), with Arsenal receiving a £45,000 ($57,000) sanction.

Tottenham Hotspur gained sweet revenge over <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/superb-stanislas-strike-helps-bournemouth-into-league-cup-quarters-174560">north London rivals Arsenal as </a>goals in each half by Son Heung-min and Dele Alli earned them a 2-0 win on Wednesday and a League Cup semi-final place.

Seventeen days after losing 4-2 in a pulsating <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-to-face-chelsea-in-league-cup-third-round-162716">Premier League clash, in-form</a> Tottenham returned to the Emirates to claim a first away victory over Arsenal in eight years and set up a two-legged semi against Chelsea.

Son opened the scoring against the run of play with a stylish 20th-minute effort from Alli's pass and Alli doubled Tottenham's lead with a delightful dinked finish on the hour.

Shortly afterwards Alli appeared to be struck by a plastic bottle thrown from the Arsenal fans but it did not dampen Tottenham's night as they took a step towards a first trophy under Manchester United target Mauricio Pochettino.

"It's a big derby, last time we were here we didn't have a great result and this is a special night," Son said.

Arsenal had gone 22 matches unbeaten in all competitions under new manager Unai Emery until Sunday's league defeat at Southampton and a second loss in four days was a bitter pill to swallow.

The hosts played well in patches but were guilty of wasting several chances, especially before the break.

Tottenham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, in for rested Hugo Lloris, was also inspired when he needed to be, clawing an Aaron Ramsey volley on to the post just before halftime.

The Argentine was first Spurs goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet away at Arsenal in any competition since November, 1998.

Arsenal started brightly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan glanced a header across the face of goal before Ramsey flashed a shot wide. Mkhitaryan then wasted a gilt-edged opportunity when clean through on goal, shooting too close to Gazzaniga.

Tottenham took the lead in the 24th minute when a long punt forward was flicked on to Alli, who showed great vision to set Son racing clear and the South Korean calmly curled past Cech.

Moussa Sissoko should have extended Tottenham's lead but fired wastefully over and it was Arsenal who ended the half strong with Ramsey's volley forcing heroics from Gazzaniga.

Arsenal introduced French striker Alexandre Lacazette just before the hour mark but it was Harry Kane, who came off the bench at the same time for Spurs, who made an immediate impact.

Kane chested down a high ball and his lofted pass released Alli. His first touch was sublime and his second lifted the ball over the advancing Cech to double Tottenham's lead.

Lacazette hit the woodwork late on but Arsenal rarely looked like denying Tottenham victory.

"I think we worked like we want, like we prepared," Emery said.

"We created chances in the first half to score but our efficiency wasn’t good. We didn’t concede a lot for them, but they have quality and they scored."

Tottenham are hunting their first silverware since 2008 when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final while they lost to the Blues in the 2015 final in Pochettino's first season in charge.

"A very difficult draw, another London derby. We have already played Watford, West Ham and Arsenal," Pochettino said.

"We shall see, Chelsea are a great team but we are excited. To be in the semi-final is fantastic for us."

Tottenham Hotspur gained sweet revenge over north London rivals Arsenal as goals in each half by Son Heung-min and Dele Alli earned them a 2-0 win on Wednesday and a League Cup semi-final place.

Tottenham Hotspur gained sweet revenge over north London rivals Arsenal as goals in each half by Son Heung-min and Dele Alli earned them a 2-0 win on Wednesday and a League Cup semi-final place. Seventeen days after losing 4-2 in a pulsating Premier League clash, in-form Tottenham returned to the Emirates to claim a first away victory over Arsenal in eight years and set up a two-legged semi against Chelsea. Son opened the scoring against the run of play with a stylish 20th-minute effort from Alli's pass and Alli doubled Tottenham's lead with a delightful dinked finish on the hour. League Cup: Tottenham Hotspur's Son, Dele Alli overpower Arsenal

A late goal by substitute Charlie Austin gave relegation-threatened Southampton a thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday in new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl`s first home game.

It was the Londoners' first defeat in 23 games and meant they lost ground on fourth-placed Chelsea, while Southampton moved out of the bottom three.
Danny Ings, back after injury, headed two fine goals in the first half from equally good crosses by Matt Targett and Nathan Redmond.&nbsp;

In between, Mkhitaryan drew Arsenal level with a header of his own and early in the second half he scored via a big deflection.&nbsp;

Yet in the 85th minute Austin, who had come on for the tiring Ings, headed in a cross by Shane Long.

The first win in 13 league games since Sept. 1 sent Southampton above Burnley into 17th place while Arsenal, who had last lost to Chelsea in the Premier League in August, remained fifth in the table.&nbsp;

Unai Emery's team had Laurent Koscielny starting in defence for the first time this season but they were uncertain at the back from the first to last minute against a side that at one stage this season went five league games without scoring.

Koscielny was at fault in failing to cut out Targett`s cross from the left and losing Ings, who scored his first headed goal for three years.

The visitors briefly looked more composed and drew level when Nacho Monreal cut back a cross for Mkhitaryan to head in, and a minute later Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was only denied by a late interception from Jan Bednarek.

Southampton went ahead again, however, before the interval. Redmond supplied the chance with a neat chip and once again Ings eluded his marker to score.&nbsp;

So Arsenal maintained their dismal record of never having been ahead at halftime in the Premier League this season.&nbsp;

As a consequence, Emery made one of his regular halftime substitutions in sending on Alexandre Lacazette for wing back Hector Bellerin, and Aubameyang almost equalised within a minute.&nbsp;

Mkhitaryan`s second goal was fortunate in the extreme, his shot taking a big deflection off Jannik Vestergaard to leave goalkeeper Alex McCarthy helpless.

Long, replacing Redmond, had a goal rightly disallowed for offside but then picked out Austin with a cross that goalkeeper Bernd Leno failed to deal with.&nbsp;

"As a club we know the position we`ve put ourselves, and with the squad we've got it's not good enough," said Ings.

"But if we keep showing resilience and hard work we can turn it round. It shows we're moving in the right direction already."

Arsenal's Alex Iwobi said his side had not concentrated sufficiently and not defended well enough as a team.

"We're frustrated the unbeaten run is over," he added.

"We had chances to win the game. But we should give ourselves some credit for going on the run."&nbsp;

Southampton end Arsenal's 22-match unbeaten run

Lucas Torreira scored with a bicycle kick in the 82nd minute to earn Arsenal a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town in a scrappy Premier League game on Saturday.

The Uruguayan leapt to volley the ball from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pass across the face of goal, securing all three points for the Gunners who otherwise only distinguished themselves by having three players booked for diving.

The first half was a comedy of errors for Arsenal, with strikers Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missing clear scoring opportunities and midfield lynchpin Granit Xhaka frequently passing the ball straight to the opposition.

Referee Paul Tierney dished out seven yellow cards in the half, and nine in the whole match. Arsenal's Xhaka, Shkodran Mustafi and Matteo Guendouzi were all booked for simulation.

Lacazette appeared to break the stalemate just before halftime, latching on to a sloppy backpass and sidestepping keeper Jonas Lossl to slot the ball into the net, only to be ruled offside. Lossl then tipped a Torreira shot from outside the area just over the bar.

Huddersfield, who have not beaten Arsenal since 1971, were unable to register a shot on goal.

In the end, it fell to a moment of acrobatics from the little Uruguayan to rob the visitors of a much-needed point.

Arsenal climbed to third in the table ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur's matches later on Saturday, while Huddersfield slipped back into the relegation zone, in 18th place.

Arsenal beat Huddersfield after Lucas Torreira's stunning goal

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Mesut+Ozil">Mesut Ozil</a> has missed Arsenal's last four matches and it is expected that he might be absent when the Gunners host Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery gave an update on the fitness of attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

While speaking to media, Emery said, "He had backache and now he is working with one physio. We are going to look when he can come with us."

Ozil is being treated for a back problem and manager Unai Emery has hinted that he could be passed fit on Friday if he comes through sessions with the club's physiotherapist unscathed.

He said, "Tomorrow is the training, the last training before (Saturday's match), today, this morning, he was working with a physio, but on the pitch, running and touching the ball. And tomorrow is the decision."

Ozil's absence mattered little as the Gunners' unbeaten run simply carried on without him.

Emery called on the club's supporters to get behind the team, to help finish off a series of three games in seven days with seven points following the 4-2 victory in the North London derby last Sunday and the 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Wednesday.

Mesut Ozil to face fitness test

Manchester United remain distant spectators in a Premier League title race in which Liverpool continue to chase Manchester City but showed plenty of spirit as they twice equalised in a 2-2 draw with in-form Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Liverpool also fell behind but stormed back to beat Burnley 3-1 and cut the gap on leaders Manchester City to two points.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed to third with a 3-1 win over Southampton while Chelsea hung on to fourth spot, above Arsenal on goal difference, despite a 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers who ended a run of six games without a win.

Storm clouds have been gathering over Jose Mourinho's misfiring United side and on a wet night in the north west they again looked well short of being contenders for the top four.

It was the first United v Arsenal clash since 1986 not featuring either Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger in the dugout.

On this occasion it was Wenger's successor Unai Emery who would had more to be satisfied as his Arsenal side stretched their unbeaten run to 20 matches -- although United boss Jose Mourinho also took comfort from a result that left his side 18 points behind leaders Manchester City.

"This is a performance of big soul and heart," Mourinho said. "But even from our bench you could feel the little panic when the ball comes to our defensive third."

Mourinho, who left Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku out of his starting lineup, said his side "scored all four goals".

He could not have expected keeper David de Gea to suffer the sort of panic that keeps undermining his side.

De Gea should have comfortably held Shkodran Mustafi's 26th-minute downward header but merely juggled it over his head and over the line.

Anthony Martial levelled six minutes later from close range, Ander Herrera pulling the ball back after Marcos Rojo's free kick was well-saved by Bernd Leno.

Rojo forced Leno into a fine save but it was Arsenal who led again in the 68th minute when Alexandre Lacazette got the final touch but the advantage lasted less than a minute as Arsenal's defence allowed Jesse Lingard to steal in and slide a shot under Leno.

De Gea made crucial late saves to deny Arsenal a first league win at Old Trafford since 2006.

"I think we controlled the game, the second half better than the first," Emery said. "We could have won this match in certain moments, but they equalised very quickly after both our goals."

Best Start

After Manchester City beat Watford on Tuesday to go five points clear, Liverpool responded well as their best start to a top-flight season continued after falling behind at Turf Moor.

James Milner levelled for the Reds after Jack Cork's surprise opener and substitute Roberto Firmino set Liverpool on course for a 12th win in 15 league games with his first touch before Xherdan Shaqiri rounded things off.

"I was really happy we could just adjust a few tactical things (at halftime)," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said after his side's 12th in 15 games.

"I shouted a lot in the first half but I wasn't angry."

His only concern was a nasty-looking ankle injury sustained by Joe Gomez in the first half.

Tottenham Hotspur shook off their north London derby defeat by Arsenal with Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min all on target for Mauricio Pochettino's side at Wembley where new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl watched from the stands.

Tottenham have 33 points, six behind Liverpool, and two more than Chelsea and Arsenal.

Chelsea took the lead early through Ruben Loftus-Cheek but Wolves replied with quickfire goals by Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota as Chelsea lost for the second time in three games.

"We played very well for 55 minutes and then suddenly we were another team," Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said.

Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri welcomed his old club Leicester City to Craven Cottage and shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw while Everton were held 1-1 at home by Newcastle United.

Southampton, Burnley and Fulham occupy the three relegation spots with nine points each.

Manchester United battle to draw with Arsenal, Liverpool march on

Arsenal came out on top in the north London derby on Sunday, sinking rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in a scintillating match at the Emirates and leapfrogging them to go fourth in the Premier League table.

A brace from Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and strikes from Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira helped overhaul goals from Eric Dier and Harry Kane, who notched his eighth in eight derbies.

Aubameyang gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after a clumsy handball by Spurs` Jan Vertonghen, who flung his arm up to knock a corner kick off course and prevent Shkodran Mustafi from heading the ball goalward.

Arsenal come from behind to beat rivals Tottenham

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck had an operation on Friday, a day after <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/danny-welbeck-taken-to-hospital-with-serious-injury-176386">breaking his ankle</a> in his side's goalless draw against Sporting Lisbon, but it remains unclear how long his recovery will take, Gunners' manager Unai Emery said on Sunday.

Speaking after Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Emery confirmed the England international needed surgery after breaking his ankle in the midweek Europa League game.

Emery at first appeared to suggest that Welbeck could be back with the club before too long but he also made it clear that he had no idea how long the player's recovery from the "big injury" might take.

"We spoke with him yesterday and today... I think he's going to come with us in not a long time. He did the operation Friday," Emery said.

Asked if Welbeck could be back on the pitch before the end of the season next May, however, Emery said that he simply did not know.

"I think it's better the doctor say to you. It's a big injury. The doctor can say better than me," he said.

Danny Welbeck has surgery on ankle but recovery time is unclear

Arsenal and Chelsea were among seven teams to reach the Europa League knockout stage on Thursday, while last year's runners-up Olympique de Marseille were eliminated at the group phase.

The two Premier League teams were joined by Eintracht Frankfurt, Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Zurich and Dinamo Zagreb in the last 32 with two games still to play before the draw for the next round in Nyon, Switzerland on Dec. 17.

Arsenal qualified with a 0-0 draw against Sporting at The Emirates, although striker Danny Welbeck was carried off on a stretcher in the first half with a serious ankle injury, while Chelsea won 1-0 at BATE Borisov in one of the early kickoffs.

A heavily changed Arsenal side were unable to break down a dogged Sporting team, who were reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute when defender Jeremy Mathieu fouled striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he raced towards the area.

However, the point was enough to guarantee the north London side a place in the last 32 atop Group E on 10 points, with Sporting behind them on seven. Vorskla Poltava lost 1-0 to FK Qarabag, with both teams on three points.

Arsenal forward Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen in the 25th minute after landing awkwardly when jumping for a header only hours after being named in the England squad for their next internationals.

Earlier, Chelsea's France striker Giroud got his first goal this season in the second half to secure a win at BATE, meaning Maurizio Sarri's side have qualified from Group L.

"I think the first target in this competition was to qualify and now the second target is to win our group so I think we need one more point," the Italian coach said.

"It's very important because then we can talk again about this competition in February when we will have another target."

Chelsea have yet to lose under Sarri so far this season.

MARSEILLE MISERY

Marseille were dumped out when they lost 2-1 at Lazio in Group H. Goals from Marco Parolo and Joaquin Correa were enough to extend a miserable run for the French side, who have now lost four games in a row in all competitions.

Lazio, meanwhile, went through along with Eintracht who eliminated Apollon Limassol with a 3-2 victory in the other game in the section.

Leverkusen joined both teams in the next stage after beating FC Zurich 1-0 at home in Group A but thanks to Ludogorets 0-0 draw with AEK Larnaca the Swiss side also progressed.

"It's very important because then we can talk again about this competition in February when we will have another target." Chelsea have yet to lose under Sarri so far this season. MARSEILLE MISERY Marseille were dumped out when they lost 2-1 at Lazio in Group H. Dinamo Zagreb beat Spartak Trnava 3-1 to qualify from Group D while Anderlecht, UEFA Cup winners in 1983, were eliminated after their 2-0 defeat by Fenerbahce in the same group. Sevilla, the most successful team in the history of the competition with five titles, went down to 10-men at Akhisarspor but came away with a 3-2 win in Group J thanks to a late Ever Banega penalty that ended the Turkish side's qualifying hopes. Diwali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu).

It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana.

The showdown between rivals Arsenal and Liverpool ended in a draw on Saturday after the Unai Emery's side showed they are capable of going toe to toe with the top four after years of underachievement.

Emery's side fell behind to James Milner's clinical finish after Bernd Leno pushed out Sadio Mane's cross in the 61st minute.

However, the fifth-placed Arsenal extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 games as French striker Alexandre Lacazette&nbsp;smashed home from a tight angle in the 82nd minute.

"I am only 50 per cent happy because we wanted to win. The balance was good in our speed and intensity. Maybe we deserve a little more," Emery said.

Liverpool, unbeaten in their 11 league games this season, move one point above Manchester City, who would reclaim top spot if they avoid defeat against Southampton on Sunday.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp added: "They had a few chances for sure. They are in a good moment.&nbsp;"We deserved a point and we could have had more. We had clear chances."

Emery further admitted that Arsenal are far from the finished article.
