The Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh is the last match in Delhi in the ODI World Cup before the action shifts to knockouts.

On Sunday (Oct 29), the national capital's overall air quality was recorded in the 'Very Poor' category, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)-India. In Delhi, the AQI was recorded at 309 on Sunday morning (Oct 29). 
 
According to the latest data collected by SAFAR-India, the air quality near Delhi University was in the 'Very Poor' category with AQI recorded at 341 in the early morning hours while in the area around IIT, it was recorded at 300.

Meanwhile, in the area around Lodhi Road, the AQI was recorded at 262 and the air was categorised in the 'Poor' category. In its bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on the air quality of the national capital forecasted that predominant surface wind is likely to blow from different directions in the city and the wind speed is estimated to be around 04-08 kmph, which will lead to mist and clear sky in the morning on October 29. 
 
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Friday (Oct 27) had stated that they have implemented a 15-point winter action plan for curbing the pollution.

According to the daily bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI of Delhi was 304 as of 4 pm local time on October 28. From October 29 to 31, the air quality will be in the 'Very Poor' category, as per the Air Quality and Weather Bulletin for Delhi.&nbsp;

<h2>Delhi AQI</h2>

Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) deteriorated on Thursday (Oct&nbsp;5). The 24-hour average was recorded at 177, which comes under the "moderate" category. The jump in the AQI level is not much and has gone up by just one unit as compared to the previous day's reading of 176 (moderate).&nbsp;

However, with the onset of winter and dropping temperatures, the AQI has been constantly deteriorating. Delhi’s AQI was 155 on Tuesday (Oct&nbsp;3) and 146 on Monday (Oct 2).

<h2>Early Warning System&nbsp;</h2>

Just like last year, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), reportedly said it will depend on the Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi to take pre-emptive action. Still, CAQM will have to wait for the AQI to get to the “poor” category to implement Stage 1. As per EWS’s forecast, the AQI is likely to be “moderate” on Friday (Oct 6) and could become “poor” on Saturday (Oct 7).&nbsp;

These are made using a technique known as the Corsi-Rosenthal method. All you need to make this is a box fan, four air filters and a whole lot of duct tape. The whole thing, as per a US News report, costs under $100.

One such video by a Seattle resident Angel Robertson has gained more than 600,000 views.&nbsp;

"It works extremely well and will save your life with really smoky days," says Robertson in the video.&nbsp;

"It does a lot better than the normal air filters," she adds.

<h2>Do these air filters actually work?</h2>

Public health experts say that these DIY air purifiers do work and that they are highly effective at removing particles from the air.

As per Petri Kalliomäki, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health, air filters made using the Corsi-Rosenthal method provide clean air at a high delivery rate. They can even be used to purify air against pollen and viruses.

"I was able to filter out all the particles in the air basically back down to what I saw last week within a matter of minutes," she added.

On top of purported vigilantism, some falsely theorize that the Canadian government is starting wildfires, either to advance its climate change policies or to force citizens into cities where it will be easier to impose "climate lockdowns."&nbsp;

Russill tied those fears to Canada's signing of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which raised alarm about the impending climate crisis.&nbsp;

As the Liberal government implemented stricter climate caps and taxes over the past decade, Russill said people in Canada's natural resource industries have grown defensive. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"This grievance isn't actually always about a global fear of shadowy UN elites or eco-vigilantes, even though that's how this gets taken up and incubated in this sort of narrative," he said. "It's expressing the fact that the relationship to the federal government and the provinces has become more insistent and more forceful."

Canada wildfires spark 'ecoterrorist' conspiracy theory

Millions of people across North America are facing high-risk air quality warnings due to ongoing wildfires in Canada. On Tuesday (June 6), with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 222 on the 0-500 scale, New York, as per IQAir, was officially the most polluted major city in the world. As per the Swiss air quality company at around 1:25 am, AQI in New York was higher than those in the Indian capital Delhi and Iraq's Baghdad.

Smoke from the Canada fires has covered major cities in Ontario and Quebec, including Toronto and its surrounding areas. The smoke has even reached as far as New York City and Connecticut, where the air quality has been classified as "unhealthy."&nbsp;

<h2>Where is the smoke coming from?</h2>

The majority of the smoke is originating from Quebec, where, as per Reuters, more than 150 wildfires are currently burning. Ottawa, the Canadian capital, received the strongest warning from Environment Canada, declaring the air quality as a "very high risk" to people's health.&nbsp;

BBC reports that Canada is experiencing a more active wildfire season than usual, with federal officials warning that this summer may see the country's largest fires yet due to the dry and hot conditions forecasted.&nbsp;

The fires across the country have already burned over 3.3 million hectares of land, which is 12 times the 10-year average for this time of year.&nbsp;

So far, in 2023, there have been 422 fires in the Quebec province. These fires have affected 226,084 hectares.

<h2>Health risks&nbsp;</h2>

Exposure to wildfire smoke can have various health effects, according to experts.

Speaking to BBC, professor Matthew Adams, the director of the Centre of Urban Environments at the University of Toronto, explained that the immediate effects of inhaling wildfire smoke include shortness of breath, elevated pulse, chest pain, and inflammation in the eyes, nose, and throat.&nbsp;

"On these elevated air pollution days, we'll see an increased number of visits to hospital," Adams told BBC, adding that this will be particularly true for individuals with pre-existing respiratory diseases.&nbsp;

Adams suggested that individuals in cities located far from the fires but under air advisories should limit outdoor exercise and stay indoors to reduce exposure. While&nbsp;those in areas closer to the fires should wear N95 masks outside to minimise inhalation of smoke particles. Additionally, he said installing HEPA filters and improving ventilation inside homes can also help.

Indian Union minister for environment Bhupender&nbsp;Yadav on Wednesday reported that in the northern state of Punjab there has been a 19 per cent rise in the cases of stubble burning, while Haryana has witnessed a significant drop of 30.6 per cent.

Taking to Twitter Yadav lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government of Punjab and its Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for not providing ample relief to the farmers, reports IANS.

"As of today, Punjab, a state run by the AAP government, has seen an over 19 per cent rise in farm fires over 2021. Haryana has seen a 30.6 per cent drop. Just today, Punjab saw 3,634 fires. There is no doubt over who has turned Delhi into a gas chamber," he wrote.

Earlier in the day, Mann questioned the central government and claimed that his recommendations on the issue of stubble burning were ignored by the centre.

This comes as reports of dismal AQI numbers are being reported. Air Quality in the national capital Delhi has been reported as "very poor" at 354 while in the adjoining area of Noida it is in the "severe" category at 406. Gurugram as per data from Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) stands at 346 in the "very poor" category.

As per him, the common issues reported include sore throat and eyes, irritation/burning in eyes, burning sensation in the throat and metallic taste on the lips etc.

Kumar further added that pollution has long-term effects on children's brains and even raises the risk of stroke.

"Long-term effects on the brain make the children hyper-irritable. I think it`s neuro-inflammation because of the toxins from the pollutants. In elderly people, it can increase the risk of stroke by 10 times."

The air quantity index (AQI) is a way to measure air pollution levels. It takes into account five chief pollutants, including PM10 and PM2.5. More than half of the Indian population gets exposed to PM2·5 greater than the annual limit recommended by the National Ambient Air Quality Standard. Lancet study estimates that 8.8 per cent of under-5 deaths in India could be attributed to air pollution in 2017.&nbsp;

According to the 2019 World Air Quality Report, India is home to 21 of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, where air quality can be as much as ten times over the safe limits of air pollution recommended by WHO.&nbsp;

Why are children at higher risk?

Children are more susceptible than adults to air pollution as their lungs, brains and immune systems are still developing and their respiratory tracks are more permeable. Children also breathe more air per kilogram of body weight, so their exposure to air pollution is much greater than adults. &nbsp;

What are the effects of air pollution on children’s health and development?

Air pollution is one of the leading threats to child health, accounting for almost one in 10 deaths in children under five years of age. Air pollution can also cause asthma, childhood cancers, chronic diseases, poor lung function, pneumonia and other types of acute lower respiratory infection.&nbsp;

Together, household air pollution from cooking and ambient (outside) air pollution cause more than 50 per cent of acute lower respiratory infections in children under 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries.&nbsp;

Every third child in Delhi has impaired lungs due to the high level of pollutants that are present in the city's air.&nbsp;

A study from Bangladesh found a pneumonia incidence among children under 5 increased by 3.2 per cent for every PM2.5 increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air -- a standard measure in air pollution analysis.&nbsp;

Pregnant women exposed to polluted air are more likely to give birth prematurely and have small, low birth-weight children.&nbsp;

Air pollution accounts for 20 per cent of newborn deaths worldwide, most related to complications of low birth weight and preterm birth. Of neonatal deaths attributable to air pollution, nearly two-thirds are related to household air pollution.&nbsp;

A recent study from India revealed a negative impact of exposure to air pollution during the first trimester of pregnancy on child growth indicators. Prolonged exposure to polluted air also negatively impacts neurodevelopment in children. Air pollution affects children's learning process by exacerbating respiratory illnesses, fatigue, school absenteeism and attention problems.

The relationship of air pollution and covid pandemic on child health is interesting. Lockdowns resulted in a temporary reduction in air pollution levels but the situation has become worse again after lifting of covid restrictions. There is also evidence that air pollution may increase the risk of covid infection by affecting the body’s immunity.

Government’s Response

Several factors have been identified for polluted air, namely- Industrial emissions, automobile emissions, stubble burning, construction and demolition activities, use of unsafe fuels for cooking etc.&nbsp;

India has taken several steps at the central and state level to control pollution and improve air quality—be it the use of CNG, the odd-even measures in Delhi, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for clean fuel, or the National Clean Air Programme.&nbsp;

National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is a long-term, time-bound, national-level strategy to tackle the air pollution problem across the country in a comprehensive manner.&nbsp;

In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, NACP implementation has faced a number of challenges. The program also focussed on 122 big cities only. A parliamentary committee too has acknowledged the lack of air pollution data from smaller cities and towns and the need for more transparency in the monitoring of NACP.&nbsp;

A large scale survey study from India found a homogenous effect of air pollution on child health in both NACP and non-NACP cities.&nbsp;

Save the Children’s Role

Save the Children advocates for the need for clean air, through participation in Multisectoral convergence meetings at the national and state levels on child health- where air pollution is also part of discussions.

The organisation advocates and works for ensuring a safe environment, especially in schools and anganwadis.

Save the Children with partners have supported the Ministry of Health &amp; Family Welfare, Government of India in drafting Childhood Pneumonia Management guidelines that include reduction of air pollution as a key preventive intervention.

Way Forward

With the recent announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that India aims to achieve net-zero carbon emission by 2070, the time to act is now.
