World number five Alexander Zverev said the newly expanded Masters tournaments that span 12 days give top players less opportunities to recharge their batteries as they spend more time away from home. Five of the nine Masters events, which are a level below the Grand Slams, are 12-day tournaments with 96-player draws. The ATP said in March that two more would go the same way from next year to enhance the experience for fans.

Both Madrid and Rome joined the list last year and Zverev, speaking ahead of the Italian Open, said it was not ideal playing back-to-back tournaments of that scale. "The two-week Masters 1000 events are great for players ranked between 50 and 100 in the world because they get a chance to play a main draw event," Zverev told reporters. "It's not great for top 10 players. It's as simple as that."

"Yes, you do get told you have a day in between, you don't have to play everyday. At the end of the day that's not resting. Resting is when you're spending time at home, sleeping in your own bed, maybe with your family, your dogs, your kids, right? "A day between matches, if you're at a different place, that's not resting. If you're going deep in events ... if you're trying to make the semi-finals or finals of every event, you're just away a lot longer and you have to work a lot more."

Both world number two Jannik Sinner and number three Carlos Alcaraz will be absent from Rome due to injuries that have hit their preparations for the French Open, which starts on May 26.

Zverev said reducing the length of the season could help players avoid injury. "If we have an 11-month season, like we have now ... it's just simply not enough time. It's not enough time to rest your body. It's also not enough time to physically prepare your body," he added.&nbsp; "Physical preparation isn't how much you practice on court, how much you play. It's how much work you put in the gym, on the track, outside the court, that you can't do during the season."

German star Alexander Zverev says expanded Masters events not great for top-ranked players

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov defeated Alexander Zverev 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4 in a thrilling contest on Friday to reach the Miami Open final, where he will face world number three Jannik Sinner.

Dimitrov, the 11th seed, utilised his forehand to devastating effect throughout the match, making just three unforced errors to take the first set.

Fourth seed Zverev, however, regained some control in a tight second set, serving with accuracy to deny Dimitrov any opportunities to break before clinching the tie-break to level the match.

Dimitrov took his tally of winners up to 44 in the decider as he defended a break point and then took the lead at 4-3, before confidently settling the match on serve for his first win over Zverev since 2014.

"It was like a dogfight on both ends, we really went after each other," said Dimitrov, whose victory will see him return to the top 10 for the first time since 2018. "He upped his game in the second set, in the third set he also had a chance but I served well."

In Sunday's final, Dimitrov will face Sinner, who powered past defending Miami Open champion Daniil Medvedev 6-1 6-2 to reach the final for the second year in a row.

<h2>SINNER'S HOT STREAK CONTINUES</h2>

When Medvedev beat Sinner to claim the Miami title 12 months ago, he extended his head-to-head record over the Italian to 6-0.

But since then, the second seed has enjoyed the upper hand as he has delivered the knockout blow on five successive contests, including a five-set thriller in the Australian Open final earlier this year.

There was no such drama on Hard Rock Stadium court as Sinner delivered a clinical performance to end Medvedev's challenge in 69 minutes.

"I felt great on court today, usually the more you go on in a tournament the more comfortable I feel and I'm very happy about today's performance," Sinner said after reaching the Miami final for a third time in four years. "I don't think Daniil felt too well today he made a lot of mistakes he usually doesn't make.

"For me it is an important tournament if I can get it good, if not I had another great chance."

Sinner, whose only loss this season was a semi-final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells two weeks ago, becomes the first player this season to reach three finals.

The Italian had Medvedev under pressure right from the gun with three break chances on the Russian's opening service game converting on a blistering forehand winner for a 2-0 lead.

The third seeded Russian would finally hold serve at 5-1 but only delayed the inevitable as Sinner bagged a high-quality opening set without committing a single unforced error.

Baffled and lost for ideas, Medvedev could do nothing to slow the rampaging Sinner who kept his foot firmly on the gas with another break to open the second set that left the world number four staring across the net with a stunned look.

Miami Open: Grigor Dimitrov continues purple patch, beats Zverev in semis to set up final's clash with Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz looked back at his best as he swatted aside a swarm of bees and world number six Alexander Zverev to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells on Thursday (March 14), setting up a clash with the in-form Jannik Sinner.

The world number two took the interruption to clear the bees from the court in his stride before racing past Zverev 6-3 6-1 in little more than 90 minutes to keep his title defense on track.

Zverev did not play badly but Alcaraz's all-court game was just too good, the 20-year-old Spaniard sealing the victory by breaking the German for the fourth time and taking his winning streak in the Californian desert to 10 matches.

"It was strange, I've never seen something like that at a tennis match," twice major champion Alcaraz said of the invasion of the bees.

"I'm not going to lie, I'm a little bit afraid of the bees. Once the match started again, I managed to stay away from the bees and do the things I needed to do."

Italian Sinner earlier continued his perfect start to the season by cruising past Jiri Lehecka 6-3 6-3 to improve his win-loss record this year to 16-0.

A windy, cool day did little to slow down the hottest player on the men's tour as Sinner was in control throughout, facing a single break chance the entire contest while his opponent piled up unforced errors.

Local hope Tommy Paul also reached the semi-finals with a 6-2 1-6 6-3 win over Casper Ruud. He will play the winner of the remaining quarter-final between Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune.

The German then consolidated his early lead and stamped his authority on the match with another dominant set. Breaking his Spanish opponent twice in the second set, Zverev raced away with the second set 6-3 and had a foot in the semis.

Zverev dropped only one game in the opening set and set the agenda for the rest of the contest. The German then consolidated his early lead and stamped his authority on the match with another dominant set. Breaking his Spanish opponent twice in the second set, Zverev raced away with the second set 6-3 and had a foot in the semis. × The third set also saw the German on the front foot where he broke Alcaraz again to establish an early lead. Zverev would serve for the match at one point but was broken at the decisive stage which paved the way for Alcaraz to come back in the match. From 5-3 down he would take the set to tiebreak. Australian Open: Carlos Alcaraz ready for 'tough battle' against Alexander Zverev in quarterfinal

Sixth seed Alexander Zverev survived an almighty scare at the Australian Open on Thursday as the former semi-finalist dug deep to beat Slovakian qualifier Lukas Klein 7-5 3-6 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(7) and move into the third round. Rain forced the 4-1/2-hour contest to be completed under the roof on John Cain Arena and Zverev found himself in huge trouble as world number 163 Klein turned up the pressure after losing the opening set to take the next two.

"I would have much rather won in an hour-and-a-half but what can I do," Zverev said. "He played incredible, was hitting every ball as hard as he could from both sides. I didn't really know what to do a lot of the times. "To be honest, he probably deserved to win more than me. That's how tennis goes sometimes. I'm happy that I'm through but his ranking is no value to how he's playing."

The 25-year-old Klein, whose only previous Grand Slam main draw appearance was at Wimbledon in 2022, was inching towards his first career top-10 win but squandered the chance to break at 4-4 in the fourth set, much to Zverev's relief. "I was thinking there's a Qantas flight at 11 p.m. tonight straight to Dubai and then one to home," Zverev said, adding that he was just a spectator much of the time as Klein reeled off the winners, finishing with 80 in total. "I was playing but the match was his hands, he was playing winners or he was missing ... I'm extremely happy to be honest."

But Klein also made 83 unforced errors, compared to only 36 from Zverev, and that proved to be the difference. Zverev levelled the contest as Klein frittered away a 3-1 lead in the tie-break and the 26-year-old German swapped breaks with his opponent early in the decider before holding his nerve in a tie-break to prevail. "Now I'm in the third round," said Zverev, who will next face American Alex Michelsen. "It's about recovering and being out here on court because that's what I love to do."

In addition, even&nbsp;Norway's Casper Ruud struggled in a see-saw match against local hope Max Purcell, ultimately winning 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 3-6 7-6(7) in his second round in the men's draw.

WORLD NO. 1 SWIATEK ALSO SURVIVES A SCARE

World number one Iga Swiatek battled back from two breaks down in the final set to beat Danielle Collins 6-4 3-6 6-4 on Thursday (January 18) and reach the third round of the Australian Open for the fifth successive year. Collins might be ranked 62nd in the world but has a good record at Melbourne Park and beat Swiatek in the semi-finals two years ago before going on to lose to Ash Barty in the title-decider.

Four-times Grand Slam champion Swiatek has an excellent record against lower-ranked players but really had to dig deep into her reserves to overcome Collins in a dramatic but scrappy three-hour contest on Rod Laver Arena. The 30-year-old Collins faltered in her serve at key moments in the match and Swiatek found her best tennis late in the decisive set to move onto a third-round clash with Czech Linda Noskova.

Aus Open: Zverev avoids shock upset by qualifier Klein, Swiatek overcomes stiff challenge from Collins

Germany's Alexander Zverev battled past compatriot&nbsp;Dominic Koepfer in the opening round, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Zverev was pushed throughout the game but brought in his experience to go past the 29-year-old in his first-round clash at Melbourne Park. The sixth-ranked Zverev will now lock horns with Slovakian player&nbsp;Lukáš Klein in round two on Thursday (Jan 18).&nbsp;

Talking about the match, it was not the best of starts for Zverev as Koepfer was up for the challenge and won the opening set 6-4. Zverev, however, came back into the contest with an impressive show in the second set. Eventually, he won it 6-3 without dropping much sweat. The third set was the most competitive with the momentum shifting from one player to the other. It went into the tiebreaker where Zverev held his nerves to win his second successive set, edging past Koepfer 7-6 (7-3). The fourth and penultimate set saw him dominate once again and eventually close the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.&nbsp;

Zverev was particularly dominant with his aces (slamming 18 as opposed to Koepfer's eight) whereas he also committed a few double faults. He was also effective with his serves&nbsp;to go past his opposition to move ahead in the mega event Down Under.

Before his match versus Koepfer,&nbsp;news broke out that&nbsp;Zverev -- Germany's No. 1 tennis player -- will undergo a&nbsp;trial for physical abuse in May. The development was confirmed by the Berlin criminal court, as confirmed by media outlet DW.

It is to be noted that Zverev, the Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021, is accused of "physically abusing a woman and damaging her health during an argument." The woman, named by his lawyers, is said to be his ex-girlfriend, called Brenda Patea. However, the 26-year-old German star has rejected all such allegations levied upon him.&nbsp; In a statement to DW, Lisa Jani, a spokesperson for the court, wrote: "The main hearing in the case will begin in May 2024. Australian Open 2024: Germany’s Alexander Zverev battles past compatriot Dominic Koepfer in opening round

Alexander Zverev led Germany into the semi-finals of the United Cup on Friday after winning his singles rubber against Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas before partnering Laura Siegemund in the mixed doubles to clinch the decider. World number eight Maria Sakkari had given Greece a 1-0 lead with a 6-0 6-3 win over three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber, before Zverev defeated Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4.

With the team score tied at 1-1, Zverev returned to the court soon after to play the mixed doubles decider, where the Greek pair of Petros Tsitsipas and Sakkari were beaten 6-3 6-3. "I was taking a back seat (playing) with Laura. I think we deserve to be in the semi-finals," Zverev said.

Zverev was aggressive in the singles, doing damage with his first serve and although Australian Open runner-up Tsitsipas hit 16 winners, his 24 unforced errors allowed Zverev to cruise past the world number six. Zverev, who fell in the second round of last year's Australian Open following his comeback from an ankle injury, is hoping to progress further in the Grand Slam this year.

"Being healthy is the biggest thing for any athlete, the mindset this year is different," Zverev said. "I hope that I can stay in Australia a bit longer maybe a bit more successful, I've already won more matches this year than I did last year so I'm happy."

Earlier, Sakkari comfortably beat Kerber, who is playing her first tournament in 18 months after a maternity break. Sakkari got off to a flying start, speeding through the first nine games of the match to take the first set and rack up a 3-0 lead in the second before Kerber was finally able to hold serve.

The hold appeared to spark Kerber into action as she broke to bring the second set back on serve at 3-2, but her brief resurgence was quickly squashed by Sakkari, who claimed her third straight singles win of the tournament. "I was pretty clinical in the first set and through 3-0 in the second, I was very solid from the baseline doing what I had to do," Sakkari said. "I knew Angie was going to find a way to come back and that she wasn't going to give up. After the first set I said there was no way the match will go super easy."

Tennis: Alexander Zverev's heroics inspires Germany to United Cup semi-finals

Alexander&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;has been ordered by a Berlin&nbsp;court&nbsp;to&nbsp;pay&nbsp;an undisclosed&nbsp;fine&nbsp;for&nbsp; physically abusing the mother of his child, the&nbsp;German&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player's lawyers said, adding that he would contest the&nbsp;court&nbsp;order. The former world number two "rejects the accusation made against him" by his former girlfriend Brenda Patea that she was a victim of bodily harm during an argument in 2020, his lawyers said. The pair had a daughter in 2021, though by that time they were no longer together.

The Guardian reported that the Tiergarten District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;in Berlin&nbsp;fined&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;450,000 euros ($476,000). In January, the Association of&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Professionals (ATP) closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend,&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Olga Sharypova, accused&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;of domestic&nbsp;abuse. Alexander Zverev has been ordered by a Berlin court to pay an undisclosed fine for physically abusing the mother of his child, the German tennis player's lawyers said, adding that he would contest the court order. The former world number two "rejects the accusation made against him" by his former girlfriend Brenda Patea that she was a victim of bodily harm during an argument in 2020, his lawyers said. The pair had a daughter in 2021, though by that time they were no longer together. The Guardian reported that the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin fined Zverev 450,000 euros ($476,000). In January, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend, tennis player Olga Sharypova, accused Zverev of domestic abuse. The ATP cited insufficient evidence as its reason for dropping the case. Tennis: Berlin Court orders Alexander Zverev to pay fine in physical abuse case

Carlos Alcaraz slipped to a shock defeat on his return from injury on Tuesday at the Paris Masters while Alexander Zverev needed three sets to see off Marton Fucsovics.&nbsp;

Spanish world number two Alcaraz, who was making his return to the court following injuries to his lower back and left foot, had been given a bye in the first round but had no answer to Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin who eased through &nbsp;6-3, 6-4.

Safiullin, ranked 45 in the world, cancelled out an early Alcaraz break in the first set and then never looked back as he ran on to claim the opener 6-3.

The same scenario then played out in the second set, with Alcaraz breaking for an early lead only for his opponent to strike back immediately.

Having only announced he would play in the tournament last Wednesday, Alcaraz looked far from his sharpest.

However, much credit must go to Safiullin, who was relentless in getting over the line for a career-boosting win in what was his first meeting with the Spaniard.

The 26-year-old held his nerve under pressure from the Wimbledon champion to serve out for the win, despite facing several deuce points in the final game.

<h2>- Zverev eyes ATP Finals -</h2>

The German 10th seed Zverev also had his difficulties, having to come back from a set down to beat Hungarian Fucsovics 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 64 at Bercy Arena.

"It was just one or two points (that made the difference)," said Zverev.

"He was playing incredibly well and tactically I think he was unbelievable.

"His slice was effective as I did not know what to do on this surface here. It was a very difficult match and I am happy to be through. I found my level and I am happy with that."

Zverev is still seeking to secure his place among the top eight who will go on to the ATP Finals in Turin next month.&nbsp;

After this victory, the 2021 champion sits seventh just behind Stefanos Tsitsipas and 430 points ahead of ninth-placed Hubert Hurkacz.

<h2>- Fritz pulls out -</h2>

American Taylor Fritz's chances of qualifying for the tour's showpiece event took a hit when he was forced to retire with an abdominal injury.

On Monday, the ninth seed had comfortably beaten Argentine Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-4.

Hometown favourite Gael Monfils was knocked out in the first round by Argentinian world number 21 Francisco Cerundolo in three sets on Tuesday.

The battling 37-year-old looked tired after losing the second set in a tie-break but rolled back the years with a break of serve right at the start of the third.

However, it was not enough as Cerundolo struck back in the eighth game of the set, before breaking the Frenchman's serve again to take the decider 7-5.

The 11th-seeded Hurkacz saw off Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 to book his place in the second round alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime, who toppled Jan-Lennard Struff in two sets.

Alcaraz stunned by qualifier in Paris Masters defeat

Number three seed Alexander&nbsp;Zverev&nbsp;said he "played horrible" after crashing out in the first round of the Japan Open on Monday, losing to world number 60 Jordan Thompson. Germany's&nbsp;Zverev, ranked ninth in the world, lost 6-3, 6-4 in Tokyo, one week after falling at the first hurdle at the Shanghai Masters.

Zverev, who won the Chengdu Open in China last month, said there was "nothing that I did well" after having his serve broken three times by Thompson. "Today, I played horrible," said&nbsp;Zverev. "He played quite good, he served quite good but it's just a very, very bad match for me. I don't know what to say."

Zverev&nbsp;had said that illness contributed to his loss to Roman Safiullin in Shanghai, but Thompson had "made it tricky" for him. The Australian lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic at this year's Wimbledon but did not back down against&nbsp;Zverev.

"I haven't done anywhere near as much as he has but when I get on the court with these guys, I've got to believe that I can beat them," said the 29-year-old. "If you don't believe it, you may as well not be out here, so I'm just really enjoying the challenge."

Zverev&nbsp;was returning to Japan for the first time since winning Olympic gold two years ago at the Tokyo Games, which were held behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic. He said it was "nice to play in front of spectators but I only played one match". "I lost today so the feeling generally is not very great right now," he said.

Number five seed Tommy Paul and number eight Felix Auger-Aliassime both made it through to the next round. American Paul beat Germany's Daniel Altmaier 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Canada's Auger-Aliassime beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (2/7), 6-2.

American Marcos Giron ousted Japanese home favourite Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6 (16/14), 4-6, 6-1. Mackenzie McDonald of the United States beat Australian Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4, and Austrian Sebastian Ofner saw off Christopher O'Connell of Australia 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-5.

<h2>Alcaraz makes light work of Zverev</h2>

In a high-profile clash on Wednesday (Thursday in India), Alcaraz started on the front foot as he pocketed the first set with ease. The Spanish No.1 pounced on his only break point in the first set to earn an early advantage in the contest. The German star was then seen struggling with his serve in the second set where he committed two double faults while losing his serve twice. Interestingly, Alcaraz did not present a single break point opportunity to his opponent to assert his dominance in the contest.

Before the start of the third set, Zverev took a medical timeout as he was struggling with injury concerns. After an extended break, he returned to the court and gave&nbsp;a tough fight to the defending Wimbledon champion. The German failed to consolidate on three break point opportunities and suffered at the decisive stage of the match yet again.

Interestingly, Alcaraz won all four break points in the contest while Zverev lost all five opportunities to break his opponent's serve. It took 2 hours and 30 minutes for Alcaraz to book his semifinal berth where he will face 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

<h2>What is up for grabs?</h2>

The semifinal ties are all set for a mouth-watering clash as Alcaraz bids to defend his title while 2021 champion Medvedev looks to reclaim his throne. The clash will be the fourth meeting between the pair, having also met at the same stage of the Wimbledon Championships earlier this year. The pair’s only hard court meeting came at the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells earlier this year when Alcaraz was again at the top. Medvedev’s only win against Alcaraz came at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

The winner of the semifinal contest will face the winner of the three-time champion Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton clash in Sunday’s summit match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

WATCH | MS Dhoni attends US Open quarterfinal clash between Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev

A flawless Casper Ruud stormed into the French Open finals for a second year running by dismantling German 22nd seed Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4 6-0 in a battle of big-hitters on Friday (June 9) and&nbsp;set up a showdown with 22-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

Last year's runner-up Ruud swapped early breaks with Zverev before turning up the heat on a warm evening on Court Philippe Chatrier by pounding the German with some vicious, spin-heavy forehands to go up 5-2 and claiming the opening set.

Zverev, playing in a third straight Roland Garros semi-final at the scene of his season-ending ankle injury last year, wasted an early opening in the next set and found himself in trouble as fourth seed Ruud snatched another break in the seventh game.

Ruud extended his lead in the match and continued to control the rallies from behind the baseline to frustrate an error-prone Zverev in the next set, before storming into a third Grand Slam final in his last five events going back to Roland Garros 2022.

A flawless Casper Ruud stormed into the French Open finals for a second year running by dismantling German 22nd seed Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4 6-0 in a battle of big-hitters on Friday (June 9) and set up a showdown with 22-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Rampant Ruud stops Zverev to book French Open final clash with Novak Djokovic

Alexander Zverev made an emotional return to the French Open semi-finals on Wednesday, one year after a horror ankle injury that sent his career into a tailspin, as Iga Swiatek set up a last-four clash with Brazilian trailblazer Beatriz Haddad Maia.

German world number 27 Zverev claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina and will face Casper Ruud, the 2022 runner-up, for a place in Sunday's final. It will be Zverev's sixth Grand Slam semi-final and will be played on the same Philippe Chatrier Court where he suffered torn ankle ligaments against Rafael Nadal 12 months ago.

Ranked at three in the world at the time, the sobbing, screaming Zverev was taken off court in a wheelchair and was out of action until January this year.

"That was the most difficult year of my life," said 26-year-old Zverev. "I love playing tennis and the sport and competition were taken away from me. I am so happy to be back on this stage and happy to be able to have another chance to play for a place in the final."

On Wednesday, Olympic champion and 2020 US Open runner-up Zverev broke in the seventh game of the first set and saved two break points in the eighth before going on to pocket the opener.&nbsp;

Etcheverry, ranked 49 and in the quarter-final at the majors for the first time, levelled the tie and was quickly 2-0 up in the third set.&nbsp;

But Zverev reeled off five games in a row before clinching the third set and then grabbed the key break to edge ahead 4-3 in the fourth.

<h2>Rudd reaches last four</h2>

Casper Ruud will play Alexander Zverev in the French Open semi-finals after the Norwegian fourth seed beat Denmark's Holger Rune 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday.

Ruud, who lost last year's Roland Garros final to Rafael Nadal, defeated sixth-ranked Rune for the fifth time in six matches and avenged his loss in the semi-finals at Rome in May.

"I kind of looked at it as though he was the favourite — he won the last time we played and he's had a better year than me so far," said Ruud. "I was feeling like the underdog even though I was seeded number four and he was seeded number six."

Ruud fended off two break points in the opening game of the match and then consistently put pressure on Rune's serve, breaking him twice in a lopsided first set. He dominated the second in similar fashion before Rune threatened a comeback as he forced a fourth set.

But Ruud surged 4-1 ahead and eventually put Rune away on his fifth match point as there was no repeat of the bad blood from last year's quarter-final.

"Luckily for me, the first two sets, he wasn't probably feeling it too well, he made a lot of errors and I got a lot of points for free," said Ruud.

"That helped settle the nerves but he fought back and third set he came out playing better. Then in the fourth set I was lucky to get that one break and keep it all the way out."

French Open 2023: Alexander Zverev sets up blockbuster semis clash with Casper Ruud

World number two and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday set up a Madrid Open last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev, the German rival who handed him a heartbreaking, reality-check defeat at Roland Garros last year.

Alcaraz defeated Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-2, 7-5 in the Madrid third round as he continues his bid to win a 10th tour title before his 20th birthday.

The Spanish crowd-pleaser was briefly troubled when 31-year-old Dimitrov broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set.

However, that merely delayed the inevitable as Alcaraz wrapped up victory in 90 minutes, making just four unforced errors. It was his 25th win of 2023 against just two losses and a 15th victory on clay.

The 19-year-old swept past Zverev in the Madrid final in 2022 for the loss of just four games.

However, just weeks later, the German claimed a four-set victory in the French Open quarter-finals. That was Zverev's third win in the pair's four meetings.

"I really want to play that match. We played a few times, head-to-head he is up," said Alcaraz.

"I really want to show my great level here in front of my home crowd. I have great memories from last year in the final but obviously I have to be really focussed in that match.&nbsp;

He added: "I know that Sascha is a really good player, a really aggressive one with good serves. I have to show all my skills."

Two-time Madrid champion Zverev needed just 56 minutes earlier Sunday to dispose of France's Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 on the back of six breaks of serve and 26 winners.

"With Carlos it will be a match-up people will look forward to," said 16th-ranked Zverev.

"We played in the final here last year, played a massive match at Roland Garros before I got injured (in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal)."

Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina toppled world number seven Holger Rune 7-6 (7/1), 5-7, 7-6 (7/5).

Rune, who turned 20 on Saturday, had saved a match point in the previous round against Alexander Bublik.

But it was Davidovich Fokina who came through the tight encounter to line up a clash with Borna Coric for a place in the last eight.

World number one Iga Swiatek claimed she had endured a "tricky" afternoon despite easing to a straight-sets win over American left-hander Bernarda Pera to reach the last 16 of the women's tournament in the Spanish capital.

Swiatek, warming up for the defence of her French Open title, claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win for a sixth consecutive victory on clay this season.

<h2>'Tricky'</h2>

"I wouldn't say it was easy. Every match is tricky here," Swiatek said after her 75-minute outing.

"I'm happy that I'm getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy... but I'm pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused."

Swiatek next faces 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova who came from a set down to see off Zheng Qinwen of China.

Also progressing to the fourth round was world number three Jessica Pegula, who clinched a gruelling 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Pegula, 29, made the final in Madrid in 2022 where she lost to Ons Jabeur. She will now tackle Italy's Martina Trevisan on Monday for a quarter-final spot.

Tennis: Alcaraz beats Dimitrov to set up last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev at Madrid Open

Daniil Medvedev shook off a second-set fall to beat Alexander Zverev 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 on Tuesday, the "crazy" victory pushing him into the Indian Wells quarter-finals for the first time.

Medvedev notched his 17th straight ATP victory. But for awhile it seemed the red-hot form that saw him lift trophies in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai wouldn't be enough in the combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 event in the California desert.

The world number six, frustrated as ever by the slow courts at Indian Wells, rolled his right ankle in the sixth game of the second set, crying out in pain and lying on the court for several minutes before limping to his chair.

Zverev, who suffered three torn ankle ligaments at last year's French Open, looked on in concern, but after the injury was examined and taped by medical staff Medvedev continued and turned the match around.

He saved all 10 break points he faced in the second set -- eight of them before he fell.

He grabbed a 4-1 lead on the way to victory in the tiebreaker and went up an early break in the third.

He was untroubled on his serve until he squandered a match point as he was broken in the 10th game.

Zverev couldn't build on that, however, clutching his head in disbelief as he double-faulted on break point in the next game.

Medvedev seized the opening, holding at love to clinch the win after three hours and 17 minutes.

"Even without talking about the ankle, the match itself was crazy," Medvedev said. "When you have 10 break points you're much closer to winning it and maybe you even deserve it, but that's tennis sometimes."

<h2>Norrie into quarter-finals</h2>

Ankle allowing, Medvedev is scheduled to face 28th-ranked Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin.

The Stadium Court drama launched a jam-packed day that featured all men's and women's round of 16 matches.

Men's top seed Carlos Alcaraz, the US Open champion who is chasing a third Masters 1000 title that would see him return to number one in the world, took on 21-year-old Briton Jack Draper -- who is coming off a third-round victory over childhood hero Andy Murray.

Women's world number one Iga Swiatek, trying to become just the second woman after Martina Navratilova in 1990-91 to win back-to-back Indian Wells titles, faced 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu.

In other early matches, defending champion Taylor Fritz defeated Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-3.

Britain's 2021 champion Cameron Norrie eased past seventh-ranked Russian Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4, lining up a meeting with American Frances Tiafoe, who beat Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-4.

Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Barbora Krejcikova.

Sabalenka fired 11 aces to avenge a loss to the Czech at Dubai last month -- the Belarusian's only lone defeat of the year.

Sabalenka next faces 19-year-old American Coco Gauff, who squeezed past Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Gauff, the fourth seed, has won three of their prior four meetings.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, a former world number two now ranked 15th, saved four match points in a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (13/11) victory over third-ranked Jessica Pegula.

The Czech next faces last year's runner-up Maria Sakkari, the seventh seed who beat Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

‘I’m going to try’- Alexander Zverev hopes to recover in time to compete at US Open 2022

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic will head into next week`s tournament as the men`s top seed with Russian world number one Daniil Medvedev banned from taking part while Germany`s second-ranked Alexander Zverev is out injured. Organisers of the grasscourt Grand Slam have banned players from Russia and Belarus from playing at this year`s Wimbledon following Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine, which Russia calls a `special operation`.

Zverev had surgery on torn ligaments in his right ankle this month after he was forced to retire from his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal. Djokovic, who was unable to defend his 2021 Australian Open title and the 2,000 ranking points he earned due to his non-vaccinated status against COVID-19, recently lost his world number one spot to Medvedev.

The Serbian, who has won the last three editions of the grasscourt major, will slip further down the rankings after Wimbledon as he will lose another 2,000 points with the ATP and WTA stripping the tournament of points. The absence of Medvedev and Zverev means Nadal, who is halfway through a possible calendar year Slam after winning the Australian and French Open titles, to be seeded second.

It also results in Djokovic and Nadal finding themselves in different halves of the draw and they cannot face each other until the men`s final on July 10. The duo met in this year`s Roland Garros quarter-final where the Spaniard triumphed.

Britain has two players in the top 10 seeds at their home major with Cameron Norrie ninth while U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu is 10th in the absence of Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka.

Novak Djokovic top men's seed for Wimbledon 2022 in World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev's absence

Daniil Medvedev returned to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday, ahead of Alexander Zverev, with Novak Djokovic slipping out of the top two for the first time in nearly four years. The 26-year-old Russian, who was surprisingly beaten by Tim van Rijthoven in the final at 's-Hertogenbosch on Sunday, briefly occupied the number one spot for two weeks at the end of February and the beginning of March.

But with Djokovic losing in the quarter-finals at the French Open, where he was defending champion, the door opened for Medvedev to rise again to top spot. Medvedev is unable to compete at Wimbledon as Russian and Belarusian players have been barred following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Rankings points, however, will not be awarded.

Zverev climbs to number two for the first time having spent a total of 56 weeks since November 2017 at number three. The German, however, is facing a spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his right ankle during his French Open semi-final with Nadal.

Djokovic's grip on the number one ranking had already been weakened by his exclusion earlier in the year, because of Covid regulations, from the Australian Open where he was also the defending champion.

It is the first time since October 2018 that Djokovic is not in the top two. Rafael Nadal, who beat the Serb at Roland Garros and went on to take the title for the 14th time, stays at number four, now only 245 points behind his great rival.

World No. 3 Alexander Zverev undergoes surgery on torn ligaments in ankle after French Open exit

German tennis player Alexander Zverev, who suffered a semifinal heartbreak at Roland Garros as he was forced to pull out of the clash against Rafael Nadal midway due to injury, has revealed that he has several torn ligaments in his right foot.

Under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier, one of the biggest matches of the season was cut short at 7-6(8), 6-6, when Zverev had to leave the court on a wheelchair after he badly rolled his right ankle, moving to his right when tracking down a Nadal forehand deep behind the baseline.

Zverev cried in pain following the fall and had to be assisted into a wheelchair by the physio and Nadal, who quickly made his way round the net to help support the 25-year-old.

Clearly in agony, the world No. 3 returned to court on crutches several minutes later to shake the hand of the umpire. He received a standing ovation from fans and a hug from Nadal, who is now one win away from capturing a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam trophy.

Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot. I will be flying to Germany on Monday (June 6) to make further examinations and to determine the best and quickest way for me to recover.

It's human to feel sorry for Alexander Zverev, says Rafael Nadal after injury ends German's French Open bid

Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev locked horns with each other in the men's singles semi-finals on Friday evening (June 03) at the 2022 French Open in Paris. In what was a riveting clash till the opening two sets, it came to an abrupt end as the German player Zverev suffered a major injury in the fag end of the second set to give a walkover to the Spaniard.&nbsp;

Talking about the opening set, it was Zverev who took the lead. Nadal was playing the catch-up game, however, he edged past the opposition in the tie-breaker to win the opening set 7-6 (10-8). Having already been stretched a lot by the 25-year-old Zverev, it seemed that things would get difficult for the senior player, who turned 36 on Friday. Zverev once again took the lead in the second set and both the players were matching each other in every shot before an early climax came with Zverev's massive injury.&nbsp;

During a rally, Zverev covered some distance to his left for a return shot when his right leg twisted on the clay court. As a result, he succumbed to the ground and was in complete disdain. Soon, the play was halted for a bit and Nadal also came to his aid. The two hugged as Zverev walked off, conceding the semi-final which was promising to go down to the wire. Here's the video of the youngster's&nbsp;injury:

Rafael&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;looks to celebrate his 36th birthday on Friday by reaching a 14th French Open final which by his own admission could be the last of his record-breaking career. Nadal, the 13-time champion, faces Germany's Alexander Zverev but is clear his chronic, long-term foot injury has put him on borrowed time.

"The last three months and a half for me, the only thing that I can say is haven't been easy," said the Spaniard after his epic four-set win over old rival Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. "But I have to keep going." Nadal, chasing a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title to move two in front of Djokovic and Roger Federer, is working constantly to find a cure for the foot issue.

"If we are not able to find an improvement or a small solution, then it's becoming super difficult for me. I am just enjoying every day that I have the chance to be here, and without thinking much about what can happen in the future.

- Find solution -

"I'm going to keep fighting to find a solution, but for the moment, we haven't." Nadal's win over defending champion and world number one Djokovic was the 110th of his 17-year Roland Garros career.

He has had to dig deep into his resources to reach his 15th semi-final in the French capital. It took him four hours and 21 minutes to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round in a tie which saw him stretched to five sets for only the third time at the tournament.

Against Djokovic, he needed four hours and 12 minutes, saving two set points in the fourth set to avoid another five-setter.

Djokovic is the man responsible for two of&nbsp;Nadal's three losses at the French Open. With his career-long rival out of the way, and world number two Daniil Medvedev and fourth-ranked 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas eliminated,&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;remains favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday.

Against Zverev, he boasts a 6-3 winning record, capturing four of the pair's five clay court meetings. Zverev, 11 years younger than&nbsp;Nadal, is still searching for a maiden Slam title. He is into a second successive French Open semi-final.

He defeated teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals but had to save a match point in a five-set win over Argentina's Sebastian Baez in the second round.

He has also never defeated&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;or Djokovic at the majors. "I'm not 20 or 21 years old anymore; I'm 25. I am at the stage where I want to win, I'm at the stage where I'm supposed to win," admitted the third seed.

In Friday's other semi-final, Marin Cilic takes on Casper Ruud with both men having made the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time.

Cilic, 33, and the 2014 US Open champion, is only the fifth active player along with&nbsp;Nadal, Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray to have reached the semi-finals of all four Slams.

Cilic, ranked 23 in the world, is in his first semi-final at the majors since 2018 when he was runner-up to Federer at the Australian Open. Ruud is the first Norwegian man ever to make the last four of a Slam with the eighth-ranked 23-year-old one of the form players on clay.

His testy quarter-final win over 19-year-old Holger Rune was his 65th on clay since the 2020 season. Seven of his eight titles have come on clay. Ruud has a 2-0 edge over Cilic, including their only meeting on the surface in Rome.

Former world number three Cilic knocked out Medvedev in straight sets in the fourth round, without facing a break point, and seventh-ranked Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals on the back of 33 aces and 88 winners.

Only two of his 20 career titles have come on clay courts, the most recent of which was at Istanbul in 2017.

Despite his surprise run to the last-four, where he is comfortably the lowest seed left, Cilic is content to maintain a low profile.

"I really don't mind being under the highlights. I'm just trying to use my opportunities as much as I can during my career every day, every match to give my best," he said.
