Airlines around the world are introducing fuel surcharges as oil prices surge amid the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The sharp rise in crude oil and aviation turbine fuel prices has forced carriers to pass on higher operating costs to passengers through additional charges on flight tickets.

US-Iran War: Jet Fuel Spike Prompts Airlines to Add Surcharges

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, has revised air ticket refund rules. Under the new norms, standard cancellation charges will apply after 48 hours. The move updates existing refund guidelines and impacts how airlines process ticket cancellations.

Newark Liberty International Airport was briefly shut down on Wednesday evening following an “aircraft emergency," due to which other flights were also grounded for nearly an hour. Officials said that an aircraft had to make an emergency landing due to engine problems, causing major delays. The FAA said in a statement that the JetBlue plane was headed to Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, but experienced engine issues shortly after take-off. “The Airbus A320 was headed to Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, and the crew reported an engine issue shortly after departing," the agency said. After the plane landed at Newark airport and exited the runway, the crew saw smoke in the cockpit. All the passengers were evacuated via slides. Operations returned to normal by 7:07 pm.
Newark Airport emergency video

Earlier, the FAA said that the emergency would likely close down the New Jersey travel hub from 6 pm to 11 pm ET. However, the ground stop lasted from 5:42 pm to 7 pm. The JetBlue flight to Palm Beach returned to the airport after just 40 minutes into the journey, according to FlightAware. Passengers on the taxiway captured videos of the emergency showing a fleet of emergency response vehicles on the tarmac. Other videos show passengers sliding down the aeroplane. After operations returned to normal, flights continued to be delayed for over an hour, the FAA said. Flights leaving Newark were delayed by an average of 90 minutes, while the incoming flights were delayed more than two hours. JetBlue said it will investigate the issue to understand what led to the engine problem. In January 2025, an Army helicopter and a commercial airliner collided near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, killing 67 people. Families of the victims are urging lawmakers to mandate advanced aircraft locator systems on planes, since it could have avoided the accident.

Two American pilots have been thrown into jail after they landed in the Republic of Guinea to refuel their plane. They are due to spend six weeks for allegedly violating the country's airspace, the New York Post reported. Authorities say the duo did not take permission before landing, while on the other hand, the pilots say they were in constant contact with air traffic control. Fabio Nicolas Espinal Nunez and Bradley Scott Schlenker have been imprisoned since December 29. They are now appealing to President Donald Trump to intervene and help them. Nunez is a 33-year-old pilot from Ewing, New Jersey, while Schlenker is 63 and belongs to Chicago. A Brazilian family of five, including two children, was on their plane and was travelling from Suriname to Dubai on a Gulfstream GIV. They had to land at the Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport for refuelling and had been talking with air traffic controllers the entire time, the pilots said. However, Guinean government and military officials allege that they made an unauthorised landing and violated Guinean airspace, putting the country in danger.
Court ordered their release, but the pilots remain in custody
Their families have asked the US State Department to help them. Lauren Stevenson, Nunez’s fiancée, told The Post that she is in contact with him and the US Embassy in Guinea. However, there has been no progress. “It’s devastating. It’s very scary. Every day is a roller coaster,” she said. An emergency appeal was filed by their lawyers after which an appellate court ordered Nunez and Scott released from jail till the case is resolved. They had to stay in the country and report to a judicial office three days a week, The Post reported, citing court papers. However, they are still in jail. Also Read: “The prosecutor refused to sign off on their release because of pressure from the military,” Stevenson said. In July 2024, three opposition leaders disappeared, and two of them are still in custody. Human Rights Watch said authorities have "yet to acknowledge their detention or disclose their whereabouts, despite inquiries by lawyers representing the men."

A crew member says that he stepped on a baby sleeping in the aisle on a late-night flight. No need to say, he was shocked that someone had put their baby on the floor in the dark. The flight attendant told View From The Wing that at around 11 pm, when the cabin was dark, he was moving in the aisle when he stepped on something in row 19. He tried to go over it and even kicked it. Immediately, he heard a baby crying and was shocked to see that it was right there in front of him. Horrified, he shouted, "There’s a baby in the aisle. Whose baby is this?" The mother reacted and picked up the baby. She told the attendant that there was no space for the baby to sleep, so she put him in the aisle. The woman later went up to the attendant and told him she wasn't angry about what had happened. They apparently got together at a hotel later and had cocktails, according to a post on social media. It is not clear which airline the incident happened on. However, according to the outlet, the attendant flies the Las Vegas-Miami route. The incident is weird and scary, as the baby could have gotten seriously hurt. A crazy incident happened on a Southwest Airlines flight when a man started throwing food at other passengers because his wife was talking to another man. A video of the incident shows the man arguing with the passengers as staff ask him to get off the plane. He throws a bag of French fries at a man filming him after he was asked to deplane. According to other passengers, the man was jealous of his wife talking to another man, which led to a heated argument. He had a meltdown when he saw her engaging with someone else. As the crew tried removing him from the plane, people started recording him and telling him to get off. He reacts angrily and throws his bag of fries at one of them. The man in the grey shirt and a white baseball cap tells them to stop filming him and gets even angrier as others laugh at him. At one point, it seems like he might hit the person sitting behind him. A flight attendant tries to control the situation and asks others to stop reacting. A ground employee positions himself between the passenger and others to prevent a physical altercation.
Netizens react to jealous husband
Netizens aren't happy to see a passenger air his dirty laundry out in the open, acting insecure and jealous. They are calling for him to be banned from flying forever. A terrifying incident happened at the Tenerife South Airport when an 80-year-old man tried to board a flight with his dead wife. As the man moved towards the plane, the staff grew suspicious of his wife's condition. When questioned, he said that his wife had died only hours before their flight. The woman was seated in a wheelchair, and the staff noticed that she was unresponsive. They checked her physically and observed that her body temperature was extremely low. The Daily Star reported, "The man was pushing the wheelchair in which his wife was. At first glance, they looked like an elderly couple about to embark. However, after passing through the portico, the guard realised that something was not right." An employee of the Tenerife Airport said, when the guard approached the woman and gave her the wheelchair, he took her hand and noticed that she had an abnormally low temperature and was not breathing. "The worker immediately notified the supervisor. In a few minutes, the emergency protocol was activated, and numerous security agents, members of the Civil Guard and forensic personnel went to the scene," he added. A man travelling in the Business Class of a Singapore Airlines flight has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for trying to steal another passenger's bag. Liu Ming took the flight from Dubai on August 7 and attempted to remove objects from an Azerbaijani man's and his wife's bags in the business class cabin. The Chinese national, identified as Liu, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft. He is said to have boarded the flight specifically for the purpose of stealing from business class passengers. The businessman and his wife were seated separately, and Liu was five rows in front of the 52-year-old man and one row in front of his victim’s wife. Liu acted upon his intentions after the dinner service since the light had been dimmed. Both the husband and wife had fallen asleep by then. Liu walked back towards the man's seat and took out his bag from the overhead cabin, and brought it to his seat. He assumed that no one was watching, but the man's wife had woken up by then. She saw Liu carry her husband's bag to his seat. She got up and confronted him. However, she failed to understand his language and called the crew. Liu understood he had been caught, and immediately put the bag back. He told the crew that he had taken it by mistake. The group staff was informed about the incident, and Liu was caught at the Changi Airport upon arrival.
Liu denied the theft
The bag contained items worth S$100,000, including a Huawei laptop worth about S$2,100, 56 cigars worth more than S$5,400, a Chopard watch worth more than S$35,000, and an Audemars Piguet watch worth more than S$51,000, The Independent reported. As the woman had confronted Liu soon after he took the bag, no items were found missing. The police said Liu continued to deny he had done anything, even though his bag was entirely different from the Azerbaijani businessman's bag. Deputy public prosecutor Cheah Wenjie said the incident on board Singapore’s national carrier "would tarnish its reputation, and that of Singapore’s tourist industry."

Passengers on a domestic plane in the United States faced a troublesome trip when someone inside the aircraft kept farting for the entire duration of the flight. For the five hours that the passengers were on board, the stench did not dissipate. It got so bad that the crew had to regularly spray air fresheners and also distribute face masks. Aeroplanes have modern aircraft filtration systems, but even they failed to get rid of the smell. Aircraft have high-efficiency particulate filters to provide passengers with fresh air. However, flights have a mix of fresh and recirculated air, with approximately 50 per cent fresh outside air and 50 per cent recirculated air.
How does air move inside aeroplanes?
According to View From The Wing, the air inside planes is fully refreshed every two to three minutes, meaning around 20 to 30 changes every hour. The idea is to reduce airborne particles and pathogens, to let passengers remain comfortable and breathe in clear air. However, this does not include gases or any kind of smell. Air inside planes moves from the ceiling vents down toward the floor, and not from front to back. This reduces the area that the same air covers, but also means that any kind of smell remains near its source for a longer time. Also Read: Chinese airline slammed for hiring married women and mothers as 'air aunties'
What HEPA filters can and cannot do inside planes
Aeroplanes have HEPA filters which can effectively capture up to 99.97 per cent of dust, aerosols and bacteria, ensuring a clean space. A man in Lithuania became the captain of a plane and ferried hundreds of passengers across Europe after forging his documents. Reports suggest that he prepared fake certificates to become a captain on a Lithuanian airline. German outlet Aero Telegraph reported that he had only served as a co-pilot with Garuda Indonesia and was not qualified to be a captain on any plane. The duration for which he acted as captain on Avion Express has not been disclosed. Avion Express has confirmed that it employed the man as a captain. Notably, the airline is a “wet-lease” company that provides aircraft and full crews to other airlines. “The company recently became aware of unverified information regarding his professional experience. An internal investigation was immediately launched and is currently ongoing,” a company spokesperson told Aero Telegraph. It is assured that its hiring procedures are in line with industry standards and they strive for "safety and compliance". Since the airline provides services to other airlines, the man got to be the captain on flights operated by other airlines across Europe while working for Avion Express. Eurowings, a German-based airline that had the unnamed man pilot its aeroplane, has reached out to safety experts for a more detailed examination of the matter. Avion Express has been in operation since 2005. Qatar Airways is once again grabbing attention for all the wrong reasons. A North Carolina woman has sued the airline, claiming that the flight attendant gave her three-year-old daughter chocolate despite being told that she has a severe dairy allergy. Laptops can pose a safety hazard if placed in an airplane's luggage section. So when a man dropped his laptop from the cabin into the cargo of a United Airlines flight, it had to turn around after nearly one hour. The flight was going to Rome from Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. The pilot was notified about the incident, who reached out to Air Traffic Control (ATC), telling them that a passenger had "somehow dropped a laptop down the sidewall into the cargo pit area of the aeroplane." United Airlines Boeing 767-400ER had to make a U-turn off the coast of Boston nearly an hour into the flight on October 15, data from Flightradar shows. The turnaround became essential since the laptop had a lithium-ion battery, which was a safety hazard. “Unfortunately, we’re going to have to get clearance to return to Dulles,” the pilot added. Also Read: Dogs in Chernobyl have suddenly turned blue, and no, it is not because of radiation
Lithium batteries can overheat and explode
The laptop was switched on when it slipped into the cargo section. A passenger who boarded a SriLankan Airlines flight from Riyadh attacked the crew when they told him he could not use the lavatory during landing. The 28-year-old took Flight 266 from Riyadh to Colombo, which was about to land at around 6 am. At this time, the seat belt signs were on, and the use of the toilet was prohibited, as is standard practice. But the man still got up and went towards the facility. When told that he could not use it since the plane was landing, he turned violent. The man from Saudi Arabia attacked two flight attendants and hit them. The rest of the crew and some passengers quickly intervened and subdued him. He was handed over to the police after landing at 6:32 am. A passenger boarded a SriLankan Airlines flight from Riyadh to Colombo and was supposed to take another flight from there to Colombo. But he decided to attack the crew while landing because he was told not to use the lavatory.

The man was supposed to take a flight to Malaysia from Colombo, but his antics landed him in jail. An 85-year-old doctor from California was served a non-veg meal on a Qatar Airways flight, leading to his death. According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his son, Asoka Jayaweera was a strict vegetarian and had requested a vegetarian meal. However, he was told that the vegetarian options were over and he could "eat around the meat." This led to him choking to death, as per the lawsuit. The case could become a precedent for future claims over medical emergencies on flights and special meals. Jayaweera's son is seeking damages over and above the Montreal Convention, claiming the airline did not respond properly to the emergency situation, which led to Asoka's death. The lawsuit notes that Qatar and the United States are members of the international treaty that governs airline liability. For onboard death and injury, a claimant can claim roughly $175,000. However, Surya Jayaweera is seeking damages for negligence and wrongful death. The lawsuit claims that the pilot did not make an emergency landing after Asoka fell sick, allegedly lying about the flight's location. After Asoka Jayaweera fell sick on the flight from Los Angeles to Sri Lanka, the flight attendant told his travelling partner that the plane could not make an emergency landing since they were over the Arctic Circle/Ocean. However, his son claims that the plane was over the Midwest and could have landed somewhere. After the meal service started two-and-a-half hours into the 15-and-a-half-hour flight, Asoka was offered a regular meal with meat. “Mr Jayaweera was a strict vegetarian and requested a vegetarian meal,” the lawsuit states.
