The findings of the study by Lancet Planetary Health highlighted that “lost output from deaths and diseases due to air pollution in 2019 led to a loss of 1.4 per cent&nbsp;of the GDP of the country” which adds up to 2.6 lakh crore. 
 
According to the paper, the economic loss due to air pollution as a percentage of the state GDP was higher in the northern and central Indian states. 
 
The findings in this analysis show that while 40&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of the disease burden due to air pollution is from lung diseases, the remaining 60&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;is from ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and neonatal deaths related to preterm birth, thus highlighting the broad-ranging impact of air pollution on human health. 
 
However, the paper noted that India has a good economic and development trajectory, which can improve further with the reduction of air pollution. 
 
The government schemes such as the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ and ‘Unnat Chulha Abhiyan’ have aided in reducing household air pollution in the country. 
 
Such success encourages to enhance efforts to reduce outdoor air pollution as well said ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava.

The air quality in Delhi improved from the 'poor' to 'moderate' category on Tuesday as the cold wave starts to grip the national capital.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature is forecasted to be at 7 degrees Celsius while the maximum would be around 19 degrees Celsius.

"Due to low-level cloud cover and cold north-northwesterly winds, cold day conditions is very likely to persist over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh &amp; Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and North Madhya Pradesh during next 24 hours," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather forecast report said.

The IMD also issued a warning of severe cold day conditions at, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh.

The SC also called Delhi worse than hell. It said that the Delhi government has no right to be in the chair.

"How many lakhs each person should be paid? How much do you value a person's life", the SC told Delhi government.&nbsp;

Dr Tarun, a cardiologist at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital said that there has been 10-15 per cent rise in the number of patients suffering from cardiovascular disease as pollution has eclipsed the city for the last few weeks.

"People should remain indoors and increase uptake of anti-oxidants which are found in abundance in fruits. Whenever one has to go out then the usage of N95 mask is mandatory because it is the only mask that protects from PM pollution. People should improve the environment at the homes by having some plants like money plant, snake plant, etc. Finally, if it is affordable then air purifiers should be used in the homes," the doctor added.

Every year, at the end of October, pollution levels spike to inhumane levels in Delhi owing to change in weather and the burning of stubble crop in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.

In Gurugram, the AQI showed improvement and clocked in at 301 in the Gwal Pahari area, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The air quality at this level falls under a 'very poor' category.

People residing in Gurugram complained of breathlessness and allergic reactions due to the toxic air.

"The pollution is increasing each day here. I am having irritation in my eyes. I use a handkerchief to cover my mouth while travelling," said Naresh Kumar Bhardwaj.

An old man named Dharam Singh Yadav, a resident of Om Nagar of Gurugram, told ANI that he feels suffocated while going for a walk in the morning. "Nowadays, I feel suffocated when I come for a walk at the park. But I have to maintain my fitness during this season also. Vehicles have increased on roads also which I believe is the major cause of pollution."

According to the India Meteorological Department, fog and mist cover is very likely over the region for the next three days.

Today, the minimum and maximum temperature in Gurugram is hovering around 15 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius. Apart from Gurugram, neighbouring Delhi is also blanketed with smog with the overall AQI in the severe category, crossing the 400-mark this morning.&nbsp;

As per the odd-even rules, cars with even and odd registration numbers are allowed to run in the streets of Delhi on alternate days. The Supreme Court had also ordered Centre to explore <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/supreme-court-directs-centre-to-explore-hydrogen-based-fuel-technology-to-combat-air-pollution-261858">Hydrogen-based fuel technology </a>to tackle air pollution. The apex court had also pulled up governments of northern Indian states for not doing enough to control pollution.&nbsp;

The practice of stubble burning where farmers set residue on fire after harvesting is one of the prime contributors to pollution. Various packages to farmers are also announced in order to stop stubble burning. The relief from farm fires is expected to come by the end of November as wheat sowing has already covered nearly 60 per cent.

Pollution continues to hurt Delhi as air quality nears 'emergency' mark

Delhi once again woke up with no respite from toxic air as the air quality continued to remain under the "severe" category in most parts and neared hitting&nbsp;the emergency mark in some regions.&nbsp;

As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, at 7 am, the air quality index (AQI) of Dwarka Sector 8, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, was&nbsp;496 and 492 respectively, which is very close to the "emergency'' category. It should be noted that an AQI of 500 or more falls under "severe" or "emergency" category. In many parts of Delhi and its adjoining areas, the air quality remained under "severe" category.&nbsp;

Air quality in Delhi 'severe', set to enter 'emergency' category today: SAFAR

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the Odd-Even traffic rationing scheme can be extended if required.

"Delhi`s air quality is deteriorating due to stubble burning. However, it has reduced a little due to rains in Punjab and Haryana. If required, we will extend the Odd-Even scheme," Kejriwal told media here. The Odd-Even vehicle rationing scheme was implemented on "non-transport four-wheeled vehicles", exempting two-wheelers and emergency vehicles.

The scheme has been implemented from November 4 to 15. It is applicable from 8 am to 8 pm, except on Sundays. The violation of the rules attracts a fine of Rs 4000. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired the 31st interaction through 'PRAGATI'&nbsp;and asked the Agriculture Ministry to distribute equipment to farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on a priority basis to tackle stubble burning.

He said that transport and agriculture ministries should come together to develop an e-model of logistics support for agricultural products. The prime minister also called for deploying young officers in aspirational districts and setting timelines to bring them up to national average.

According to an official release, prime minister gave explicit instructions for speedy completion of Katra-Banihal Railway Line by next year and said that Delhi-Meerut Expressway should be completed by the revised timeline of May 2020.

He said that long-delayed projects should be expedited by the respective state governments and directed that regular reports on the progress of such projects be sent to his office.

The release said that in the previous PRAGATI meetings, a total of 265 projects with a total investment of Rs 12.15 lakh crore, besides 47 schemes and grievances related to 17 sectors had been reviewed.

The PRAGATI meeting -- ICT based multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation -- witnessed a review of nine projects worth over Rs 61,000 crore related to 16 states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Grievances of Indian citizens working abroad along with subjects like National Agriculture Market and Aspirational District Programme were also discussed.

In the review of the progress of Aspirational District Programme, the prime minister was informed about dashboard based on 49 performance indicators.

"Even slow-moving indicators like the status of nutrition have shown tremendous progress. It was also noted that some districts of Uttar Pradesh have shown impressive growth," the release said.

Calling it an act of national service, the prime minister laid stress on the importance of focussing on education and healthcare of tribal children. "He emphasized the need to decide on timelines to bring the backward districts up to the national average. He also stressed that young officers must be deployed in Aspirational Districts," the release said.

The prime minister was informed about the progress in the National Agriculture Market platform, which has helped in better price discovery. "E-payments are now being made directly into the account of farmers. Progress in the development of two integrated e-mandis in Jammu and Kashmir was also reviewed," the release said.

"Prime minister directed that based on e-models of demand aggregation, Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways and Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers'&nbsp;Welfare should work together on a new start-up model of logistics support, particularly with regard to the transfer of agricultural products from one state to another," the release said.

It said that all the states must come together and use a common, integrated platform for smooth operation.

"On the issue of stubble burning, Prime Minister directed Agriculture Ministry to give priority to the farmers of the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana in the distribution of equipment to prevent such occurrences," the release said.

The Arvind Kejriwal led government in Delhi had announced the closure of schools till November 5 after pollution levels plunged to `severe plus` category on Friday.

After an extended bout of hazardous levels of pollution, the air quality in the national capital and its adjoining areas on Wednesday fell in the `poor category` due to positive influence of high-speed winds. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi at 8:30 in the morning today was 276; it was 381 (very poor) on Tuesday and 494 on November 4, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR). Despite the decrease in the pollutants in the air, a layer of thick smog continues to cover the sky near the major junction of Delhi. At India Gate, where the air quality remains in the `unhealthy` category this morning, the visibility was poor creating problems for the joggers and the commuters. Schools situated in Delhi also reopened today as air quality in the national capital improved significantly in the morning. The Arvind Kejriwal led government in Delhi had announced the closure of schools till November 5 after pollution levels plunged to `severe plus` category on Friday. A couple of students had worn anti-pollution masks while going to school to prevent themselves from falling prey to respiratory illness. \In a bid to tackle the national capital`s air pollution, the Delhi government has also re-introduced the Odd-Even scheme. Today is the third day of the programme and this scheme will run till November 15.
